The Rio Grande Valley Builders Association, Inc. (RGVBA, Inc.) is a non-profit 501 (c) (6) corporation formed exclusively as a trade for charitable and educational purposes. The RGVBA, Inc. operates for the benefit of home builders and those engaged in allied industries in the Rio Grande Valley area and is an affiliated member of the National Association of Home Builders, Washington, D.C., and the Texas Association of Builders, Austin, Texas. RGVBA membership is open to any person, firm, or corporation related to the building industry; is in good character and business reputation; agrees to abide by the provisions of the By-Laws of the Association; subscribes to the purposes of the Association; and meets with the approval of the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is elected annually and governs the local Association. Board members hold quarterly meetings to set guidelines, plan group activities, and appoint committees to carry out the goals and objectives of the organization. A monthly general membership luncheon meeting is held to allow members the opportunity to increase business contacts in a relaxed social atmosphere. One of the top concerns of the RGVBA, Inc. is its image in the community because it knows that it is the community who turns to the home-building industry for shelter and lifestyle and enables the builders to have businesses. As the only Builders Association in the Rio Grande Valley, the RGVBA, Inc. services Hidalgo, Starr, Cameron and Willacy counties. RGVBA, Inc. members are concerned, caring professionals who believe their involvement makes their community a better place. For years, these RGVBA, Inc. members have shown they care about their communities by contributing time, money, and in-kind services.

2014 Parade of Homes Leadership Long hours of hard work and dedication go into the planning of a successful Parade of Homes. One of the reasons the Rio Grande Valley Builders Association, Inc. Annual Parade of Homes has been very successful is due to the hard work of those behind the scenes. Due to his long-term involvement with the Association and the Parade of Homes committee, Mike Duffey (Zarsky Lumber Company) was asked to head the committee. Working alongside with Mike were Paco Vielma (EPP Marketing) and Jose R. Vielma (RGV New Homes Guide). Is the Color of Satisfaction, Survey Says

Are green home buyers happy home buyers? A new survey shows that they are. It’s National Designation Month when the Rio Grande Valley Builders Association, Inc. and the National Association of Home Builders shine the spotlight on those industry professionals who go the extra mile by seeking the education and training they need to attain professional designations that signify their specialized knowledge. It’s especially important with green -high-performance -- building. More and more consumers are looking for homes designed to save energy and water and that incorporate locally sourced materials. Choosing a builder or remodeler who holds the NAHB Certified Green Professional (CGP) or Master Certified Green Professional designations is one way to find someone with the latest knowledge of these high-performance practices. These industry professionals have studied the interplay between energy efficiency and indoor air quality, understand the principles of environmentally sensitive lot design, and are trained to help their buyers make decisions to result in a home that is as green as they want it to be.

Many of these professionals also turn to certification programs such as the ENERGY STAR® and whole-house certification programs such as those based on the ICC National Green Building Standard (NGBS), a nationally accredited rating system that forms the foundation of their training. The result: Measurable customer satisfaction. Released in February, the survey conducted by the firm GuildQuality showed that home owners who purchased a home certified to the NGBS are overwhelmingly likely to be glad they did. Here’s what the study found: • 94% would recommend a green home to a friend. • 92% would purchase another green home. • 71% of respondents believe that green homes are, overall, of higher quality. • 55% knew their home may have cost more than a non-green home, but believed the benefits outweighed the cost. • 90% were satisfied knowing they did the right thing in buying a green home.

These consumers were looking for a home built to provide lower utility bills, simpler maintenance, and better energy efficiency – and their green homes delivered. In fact, when asked what green related aspects of their home they were least satisfied with, the overwhelming majority listed “none.” What does it mean when a home is certified to the National Green Building Standard? It means that the builder has met – and then exceeded – requirements that incorporate energy, resource and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and less intrusive site development practices into the construction of the home (see page 34). Certified homes also come with a green “owner’s manual” to help you maintain your home’s high-efficiency features.
