Crystal Cove Tide Pools

This state park is one of Southern California’s most treasured gems. The park offers around 3.2 miles of beach, where explorers will find tide pools with a fascinating array of marine life. The park also offers volunteer-led tide pool walks on certain days. Crystal Cove is a great place to visit because the beach is absolutely pristine and reminiscent of California beaches of yesteryear. Plus, there is a delicious beach-themed restaurant on the sand called Beachcomber and a Ruby’s Shake Shack up at the top of the hill on Pacific Coast Hwy. Beach Access: E. Little Corona Beach Tide Pools

Not commonly known by tourists, Little Corona Beach boasts the best tide pools in the region – perfect for the kids to explore in a beautiful secluded area and observe some of the local wildlife. Commonly spotted here are numerous small fish, crabs, starfish, sea urchins and more. Don’t forget to bring sturdy beach sandals for exploring, as the tide pools can be quite rough.

Over thirty-eight million vacationers come to Orange County each year. They are drawn to the forty-two miles of captivating scenic coastline filled with some of America’s most famous beaches.

Newport Beach

Beach Access: At West Jetty View Park, tip of Balboa Peninsula, end of Channel Road | Newport Beach

Corona del Mar State Beach Located down steps or a path from Ocean Boulevard, Big Corona as its known by locals offers stunning views of the Newport Beach jetties and bay at Inspiration Point Park. This entire beach area was once known for its powerful waves that surfers enjoyed but now is docile to child’s play because of the break created by the jetties. The beach looks across the bay to Newport Beach’s peninsula and famous surfing spot The Wedge. The powerful waves that roll into The Wedge are the same waves that would have impacted Corona del Mar beaches, had the jetty not been built in the early 1900’s. The beaches allow dogs after 5:00 PM and early morning.

Newport Pier One of OC’s beach meccas, the Newport Pier area, which roughly runs from about 18th Street up to 21st Street and beyond, is a whirlwind of activity and is definitely the place to be, especially during the summer. There is so much going on in this dynamic coastal city, it is hard to know where to start. Swimming, boogie boarding, skim boarding, surfing and fishing, not to mention jetty climbing, are considered great recreation around here and make any person feel like he/she is on a holiday.

The Wedge The Wedge is one of the most famous bodysurfing and body boarding spots in the world.

Known for its immense waves, this place has earned its reputation as a dare devil’s haven.

In some stretches of the Wedge, it is recommended to just watch the action unless you’re an expert. The waves slightly farther north are tamer and more suitable for surfers and swimmers of all experience levels.

If you dive around the reef on the eastern side of the cove, you can exit the water at Fisherman’s Cove. Shaw’s Cove is monitored by the Laguna Beach life guards so make sure you have a buddy and a snorkel - they check.

Laguna Beach

Main Beach is a busy, urban beach nestled in the middle of downtown Laguna. This small beach attracts a lot of visitors, especially in summer. A boardwalk runs the length of the beach where artists and street musicians set up along the coast. The park and plaza that abut the beach include basketball and volleyball courts, a playground and picnic tables. This is a terrific place to walk on the bluff and walk down to several coves along the way. At night, Main Beach’s waterfront walk is popular with strolling sweethearts.

Crystal Cove State Park A secluded beach stretching some 3.5 miles, an official “underwater park” teeming with reefs and 2,000-plus wooded acres for exploring make Crystal Cove State Park a remarkable escape from the crowds and bustle of Newport Harbor. Tide pools and coves delight visitors to the beach year-round, though rangers advise exploration of these during winter, when lower tides present clearer views of the aquatic life. Carved into the park’s ridges and canyons are more than 23 miles of mountain-biking, horsebackriding and hiking trails, many of which feature steep, rocky climbs.

Shaw’s Cove This picturesque cove has tide-pools and has become a popular diving destination. The

Aliso County Beach Aliso Beach Park features sandy beaches, rocky promontories and scenic coastal foothills. These geological features combine to form one of the most recreationally appealing areas along the entire California coast.

The park consists of two sections, the beach itself and an inland area surrounded by native coastal chaparral. Aliso is also the site for championship skim board contest.

Thalia Street Beach This beach is almost exclusively used by locals of all ages who surf and skim. Thalia is one of those neighborhood gems offering many opportunities to soak up the local culture. This is a surfing beach and is not for use by swimmers or body boarders. Swimming is permitted south of the beach (past the surf flag) at the northern end of Anita Street beach.

Beach Access: Just look for the surf shop on the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Thalia Street in Laguna Beach that calls itself Thalia Street Surf Shop. The beach is located at the bottom of the street down a set of stairs | Laguna Beach

Thousand Steps Beach Two hundred nineteen concrete steps lead to a small beach at the base of a Laguna cliff near the Montage Resort. As you descend the stairs you will get glimpses of the ocean and the beach. The stairs are covered with trees and vines in a thick canopy, so take your time; the stairs are very steep. This beach is great for surfing, body surfing, volleyball and some good ol’ sunbathing. When the surf is up, you will get to see some spectacular waves crashing against the rock outcroppings.

Huntington State Beach & Pier The crown jewel of the recreation system is the wide expanse of beautiful and pristine beaches, where large crowds gather to watch professional sporting events as the U.S. Open of Surfing, AV P Pro Beach Volleyball and the Surf City USA Marathon. From the serious water sports competitor to the amateur just out for fun, the Huntington Beach Pier offers something for everyone.

Huntington Beach

For moms, Baby Beach can be an ideal place to let toddlers blow off steam by splashing around and digging in sand. It’s nestled in Dana Point Harbor, so waves are nonexistent. Nearby are rentals for water sports plus Pilgrim tours and the Ocean Institute.

Doheny State Beach truly is one of the favorite beaches for barbecues and family picnics.

Its beautiful grass lawns, tables and grills, volleyball courts and clean sand beach are all close to the parking lot, so you don’t have far to walk. This Dana Point favorite has a fiveacre lawn with private picnic facility rentals plus a sand beach and plenty of restrooms, food concessions, showers, etc. Doheny State Beach is the readers’ choice as the County’s “Best Camping Site” in the Orange County Register’s 14th Annual Best of Orange County survey.

Victoria Beach is located south of main beach and is known for its white sandy beach, beautiful blue-green waters and unique residences. The main attraction is the tower that stands tall at the north end of the beach.

The 16th century looking Victorian turret or lighthouse type structure, built as a spiral staircase access to the beach from the towering residence above, was built in 1926. Victoria Beach is one of Laguna’s most private public beaches mainly because it is not easy to find and provides very limited parking.

Dana Point

Huntington Dog Beach The Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach is a non-profit organization that works to preserve access to the beach for dogs and to keep the beach clean and safe. Huntington Dog Beach is considered doggy-heaven by most visitors. Dogs come from all over the world to play in the sand and splash in the surf.

Salt Creek Beach The long, sandy beach is a popular surfing spot. Both upland and beach facilities can be reached from Ritz Carlton Drive off Pacific Coast Highway. From the west side of the lot, a paved path leads to the beach and to the grassy, seven-acre Bluff Park, which has benches, barbecue grills and picnic tables.

Off The Grid

SCOTCHMAN’S

COVE

Hidden off the grid between Newport Coast and Laguna Beach within the Crystal Cove State Park, you will find Scotchsman’s Cove, a secret surf haven.

It consists of a zigzag of wooden steps to a hidden beach, grouping of reefs and tide pools. This place is a favorite among locals and considered sacred. With the right swell and tide - this place goes off.

Beach Access: Scotchman’s Cove is located off Pacific Coast Highway between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach. Access the cove at Reef Point.

Nestled in Orange County’s canyons, slopes, beaches and mountains you will find meticulously kept paths of varying difficulty that show a naturally breathtaking side of SoCal. These carved routes will most certainly allow you to get in touch with OC in a unique, refreshingly rustic way.

Crystal Cove State Park This park is undeveloped with wooded ravines, open coastal bluffs and a small significant stretch of Pacific coastline. Eighteen miles of trails may be found in 2400 acres of wilderness, with three separate trails including easy, moderate or difficult. Docent led, backcountry hikes are scheduled most Saturdays and Sundays. Hikes are three to five miles, and last about two hours.

Hike Access: • El Moro Visitor Center – from Coast Highway, turn inland at the School/State Park light and follow park signs.

Laguna Coast Wilderness Park Laguna Coast Wilderness Park’s 6500 acres lie within some of the last remaining coastal canyons in Southern California. The park ecosystem is primarily Coastal Sage Scrub, with Maritime Chaparral, Oak Woodlands, Riparian habitats, and the ONLY natural lakes in Orange County. The James and Rosemary Nix Nature Center, full of interesting displays and with amenities in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park’s Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area, is approximately five miles south of the I-5/405 and approximately two miles north of El Toro Road. There are several trails from this point for all levels of fitness. Docent led hikes, such as Elder Trek to learn about the outdoors and diverse plant life, Cultural Resource Hike to learn how Native Americans used various plants and a

Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve and Ecological Reserve Every year, more than one million people visit the Upper Newport Bay. Birders, joggers, bicyclists, hikers, kayakers, horseback riders, educators, outdoor enthusiasts, and others enjoy the Back Bay’s natural beauty and variety of activities. It is one of only a few remaining estuaries in Southern California and is the home of nearly two hundred species of birds, including several endangered species, as well as numerous species of mammals, fish, other critters and native plants. The ten-mile trail has multiple entry points along the loop, with opportunities for scenic stops and visits to local educational facilities along the way.

The Environmental Nature Center at the Upper Newport Bay inspires all generations to protect the natural world by serving as our community’s foremost authority on ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental education.

The Salt Creek Greenway Trail The Salt Creek Trail provides a nice midweek alternative. It follows Salt Creek from near Golden Lantern in Laguna Niguel all the way down to Salt Creek beach and back, all on a paved path that makes it an excellent choice even in rainy weather. It’s a moderate hike that takes about two hours and has gently rolling inclines. The trail begins at the end of the sports park parking lot on Chapparosa.

You follow the paved trail as it parallels Salt Creek. Keep your eyes open for rabbits and the occasional snake, and listen for the croaking frogs. Once you reach the beach, you can stop and enjoy the views, or extend your hike with a beach walk.

Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park Set out for the Top of the World hike along a scenic crest in the mountains backing Laguna Beach. This is a 2.5-mile (round-trip) “reverse hike” in the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. You’ll start by hiking downhill and finish with 700 feet of cardio climbing on the return journey. All in all, it’s an efficient workout on Canyon Acres Trail, crossing the steep slope between the bottom of Laguna Canyon and the round 1000-foot summit, Top of the World. Start by taking a short dirt road from the trailhead at Alta Laguna Park up to the Top of the World. On a clear day, the views blast out in all directions.

Descend Canyon Acres Trail, relishing big views up and down Laguna Canyon. Keep an eye to your right, and spot a pair of small arches in the sandstone along the trail. As you near the canyon bottom, a loop in the trail will take you back up the canyon wall on the steep climb to Top of the World.

he popularity of yoga has continued to increase over the years. Orange County has seen an immense growth in the number of yoga studios as locals and visitors are eager to hop on the yoga train. And it’s no surprise why.

Take a few days off – not to mention a few weeks or months – and you may find your hands aren’t able to touch the ground anymore. Fear not yogis! The OC yoga scene has you covered. Ra Yoga is a local favorite and for good reason. They offer multiple class levels as well as a yogalates class – heated yoga with pilates. A longtime favorite that has been around since 2005 is Yoga Shakti, which offers yoga, meditation courses and Ayurveda. ROAD TRIPS Palm Desert

ear-round travelers flock to Palm Springs in California’s Coachella Valley. This resort town draws both the country club goers and design aficionados for its vintage shops and mid-century modern architecture, which inspired a design aesthetic now called Desert Modernism. What has been Hollywood’s desert playground since the 1920s now attracts travelers from all over who come here to escape from the hustle and bustle and relax poolside.

It’s an easy drive from Orange County to Palm Springs, despite the fact that traffic is almost inevitable along the CA-91. Rather than shooting straight out to the desert, stop at places that most drivers whiz past. In Riverside, military buffs will not want to miss the March Field Air Museum that houses an extensive collection of military aircrafts dating back to the 1930s.

What has been Hollywood’s desert playground since the 1920s now attracts travelers from all over who come here to escape from the hustle and bustle and relax poolside.

For those who love great fashion at discount prices, the Desert Hills Premium Outlets, located just off the I-10 in Cabazon, is a shopper’s paradise. Here you will find topname designers such as Gucci, Valentino, Fendi and Versace.

Once back on the road, you will see the Windmill Farms begin to appear on the horizon. Actually called wind turbine generators, they are a type of windmill that produces electricity by harnessing the wind at speeds of at least thirteen mph. The largest of these windmills stands one hudred fifty feet tall with blades half the length of a football field.

To reach Palm Springs from the I-10 take Highway 111, which links virtually every desert resort city in the valley. Driving down Highway 111, the stars from the mid-century still have their mark on the area with several streets named after them, such as Frank Sinatra Drive, Dinah Shore Drive and Bob Hope Drive.

Be sure to take a detour outside of PalmSprings to visit the iconic Joshua Tree National Park, which is about tirty-five miles off the I-10 via the CA-62. Palm Springs is also filled with plenty of hiking at sites like Indian Canyons, Tahquitz Canyon and the Coachella Valley Preserve. End the day at one of the mineralrich hot spring pools in Desert Hot Springs, where the tradition of these therapeutic dips in the local mineral springs dates back decades.

The weekly changing menu serves seasonal, locally grown and usually organic food. Serving handcrafted cocktails with food like tuna melts, lobster sliders, tacos and wings, this unpretentious watering hole has a laid-back vibe yet ironically has a pretty lively dancing crowd.

ention Bali and images of sculpted rice terraces, gorgeous sunsets, turquoise waters and hundredyear-old temples come to mind. Or some may think of Elizabeth Gilbert’s 2006 book Eat, Pray, Love, which inspired hordes of spiritual tourists to visit the island.

Visiting this layered place enhances preconceptions and the Bali that you experience embellishes the Bali that you’ve imagined.

With its gorgeous scenery and unique culture, Bali is unlike anywhere else in the world. Despite terrorist attacks in 2002 and again in 2005, both taking place in Kuta, Bali still remains a popular tourist destination and the Balinese are a warm and welcoming people.

In the South, travelers avoiding the party scene of Kuta, where drunken tourists dominate the beaches, will find tranquility in the Seminyak, which is known for its upscale and luxurious hotels, restaurants and shopping. The Legian Bali (Jalan Kayu Aya, Seminyak; +62 361 730622) is a beachfront, all-suite resort with a contemporary

approach to traditional Indonesian design. Relax at the two-tier pool overlooking the ocean before indulging in a massage at the world-class spa. In the late afternoon have the hotel arrange a driver to take you forty-five minutes northwest of Seminyak to the village of Tabanan in time for sunset. Here you will find the iconic Tanah Lot, a rock formation that shoots out into the ocean. It is the site of a pilgrimage temple, Pura Tanah Lot, which was built around the 16th century and is only accessible during low tide. As the sun sinks behind the horizon, the skies turn a brilliant, golden-red creating the perfect backdrop for the site.

With so many restaurants to choose from you cannot go wrong with MÉTIS Restaurant and Gallery (6 Jalan Petitenget, Kerobokan; +62 361 4737888), a French-Mediterranean restaurant that has an entire section of the menu dedicated to foie gras.

The restaurant also features a gallery boutique with Bali’s traditional and contemporary art and fashion.

Seminyak also boasts an ultrachic, trendy nightlife. The classic KU DE TA (Jalan Hotel The Oberoi Kuta, Bali) has been around since 2000 and

remains at the forefront of the Seminyak party scene. For cocktails with impeccable sunset views, head to Rock Bar (AYANA RESORT, Jl Karang Mas Sejahtera, Jimbaran; +62 361 702222; ayanaresort.com) which sits 14 meters above the ocean at the base of the cliffs.

After you’ve soaked up enough rays at the beach, head North to the Bali’s cultural center Ubud, the islands preeminent center for fine arts, dance and music. Once predominantly visited by muddled backpackers, cosmic seekers, artists and bohemians, Ubud is now a hotspot for everyone from the literati and glitterati to the yogis and art collectors. Surrounded by terraced rice fields, art and craft communities, ancient temples and rivers, Ubud is arguably the best place for culture, comfort, nature and inspiration.

To immerse yourself in the surrounding beauty of Ubud, take a bike tour with Banyan Tree Bike Tours (Br Baung, Desa Sayan, Ubud; +62 361 971 088; banyantreebiketours.com), which is a local-run tour operator that takes you through the amazing highlands on bicycle. At night, experience a traditional Balinese fire dance such as the Kecak Fire & Trance Dance (Jl. Sriwedari, Taman Kaja Community, Ubud; +62 361 970508; kecakdance. com) on every Wednesday and Saturday. Other fire dances take place on other nights, be sure to check with your hotel. One of the most famous attractions in Ubud is the Sacred Monkey Forest (Jalan Wenara Wana, Ubud; +62 361 971304; monkeyforestubud. com) a nature reserve and temple complex in the village center. The forest is home to over 600 macaques that swing from branches and chase any visitor carrying food. Unless you want to have monkeys crawling all over you, enter the forest with very few items. These cute kleptomaniacs will take whatever they can get their hands on!

Once you’ve explored everything around Ubud, hire a driver to take you to some of the sites outside the village.

Goa Gajah, or more commonly known as Elephant Cave, is an incredible complex at Bedulu village just two kilometers southeast of Ubud. The centerpiece here is a cave dating back to the 11th century with an ornately carved demon’s mouth as the entrance. Further north of Ubud is the temple complex of Tirta Empul, one of the holiest temples in all of Bali. The site was built around hot springs that still bubble in the central courtyard. Located on the western shore of Lake Bratan is Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, which is devoted to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake. The illusion that it is floating on the water is one of the reasons it is the most iconic site in all of Bali.
