Although Dripping Springs is 161 years old, we’re a thriving, young and vibrant community. We have nearly

2,000 residents in our city limits but over 30,000 in the close vicinity that call Dripping Springs their hometown.

We pride ourselves on being a closeknit community— a town where everyone says “hello” as they pass you on the street. We are also located in one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. Despite this tremendous growth, the core of what makes our town special has only strengthened.

If you’ve never visited Dripping Springs I encourage you to visit the historic Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead, a two-bedroom log cabin built in 1847 that started it all. It is also the inspiration for our annual fall event, Pioneer Day. You should also explore our many natural wonders. For instance, Hamilton Pool Preserve, an historic watering hole with one of the most beautiful waterfalls and Golden-

Cheeked Warbler habitats, is a must.

Other local favorites are the City’s Founders Memorial Park and Charro Ranch Park.

Of course, what’s the Hill Country without an annual fair and rodeo?

And we’ve got one of the best! Our state-of-the-art events center at Dripping Springs Ranch Park was just completed last year.

Finally, I encourage you to shop locally in one of Dripping Springs’ oldest and most historic areas, Mercer Street. The famous town center is being revitalized with a number of pedestrian-friendly amenities. With a great coffee shop, brew pub and dance hall, it’s a great place to start or end your day.

with taste There’s no place to be except Dripping Springs in early September each year. That’s because the annual Dripping with Taste Wine, Food and Arts Festival brings together not only the entire community but also visitors from hundreds of miles away.

The festival is a showcase of Texas artisans, chefs, restaurants, wineries, local breweries and musicians, held at the new Dripping Springs Ranch Park Event Center, encompassing almost 100 acres.

This years event, the seventh annual DWT, takes place on Sept. 13 from noon to 7 p.m.

For many, part of the fun is joining one of the many volunteer committees whose dedication and hard work make this a premier event in Central Texas.

Volunteers work a three hour shift and are given free admission to the event including tasting ticket and a t-shirt.

Pioneer Day is an educational experience of pioneer times held on the grounds of the museum the third Saturday in the month of September each year.

This one-day event boasts more than 40 demonstrators of pioneer crafts and skills, such as butter churning, blacksmithing and quilting.

Children of all ages will delight in the tremendous children's area where they can be enlightened in a one-room schoolhouse, create cornhusk dolls and pet chickens and goats. In addition, attendees can enjoy a covered wagon pulled by majestic horses, on a beautiful ride around the

The Annual Founders Day Festival is Dripping Springs’ biggest community event each year and celebrates the founding of the city back in 1850 by the Moss, Wallace and Pound families.

Held over three days, the jubilee is designed to promote cooperation and volunteerism in the community through fun, fellowship and recreation.

The Dripping Springs Lion's Club never fails to outdo themselves when bringing the carnival to town, and this year is no exception! The fun begins on

Friday evening on the west end of Mercer Street in the City Hall's parking lot.

The carnival provides entertainment for all ages, including games and cotton candy.

And of course, there is a parade!

The 2014 Grand Parade theme is “Revitalizing for the Future, Embracing our Past” and travels down Mercer Street in downtown Dripping Springs to

kick off the festival at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25. More than 75 entries are expected this year.

Entertainment takes places on two stages, the Home Depot Stage and The Party Stage. Besides the variety of musical entertainment, one highlight is the annual Chicken Clucking Contest hosted by the Mayor!

Written by David Haffelder As I start preparing for the Brent Thurman Professional Bull Riding, on June 28, 2014, my mind is flooded with memories from the past. This event means so much to so many and it seems like yesterday when we had our first show, not 15 years ago. We did not know then where it would take us. It is humbling to think that we went from an "Open Pro" bull riding to a sanctioned PBR event. The expression that not one of us is as strong as all of us holds true for this event. People from all walks of life have stepped up at the right time and made it what it is. But what IS this event really? What does it mean?

Anything that survives the test of time starts with a solid foundation. Brent Cullen Thurman is our foundation and his legacy is the rock that this event is built on.

Little did any of us know that Brent was laying the groundwork for this event years before he left us. Brent led by example; through his actions he showed us who he was. He could have been World Champion Bull Rider 10 times over, but his legacy outside the arena is what made him a Champion in my eyes. He began volunteering at Covington Middle School in a program for special needs children when he was not on the road. He developed a special bond with the students and the

instructor at the time, Candy Jones. In honor of that, an Exceptional Rodeo for Challenged Athletes is held every year before the PBR. The participants ride horses, take a ride on “Mighty Bucky”, rope steer dummies, along with other activities. The smiles, laughter and joy seen in the challenged athlete’s faces are priceless.

Proceeds from the event have allowed us to contribute yearly to Marbridge Foundation, Special Olympics Area #13, and, more recently, a group of Challenged athletes from the Jason Walford Foundation in Kerrville. But more importantly it has allowed us to build relationships and friendships with the Challenged Athletes, chaperones and families that return year after year.

What a blessing!

Having the event in Dripping Springs is something we have dreamed of for many years. Professional Bull Riders from all over the world, ranked in the top 45, will be competing in the event.

We will honor one of bull riding’s greatest cowboys to ever strap spurs on his boots. When the stands are full, the bulls are all loaded, and the excitement permeates the air, I will know in my heart of hearts that there is a man, a cowboy, my friend, grinning from ear to ear for what we do to honor him. My heroes have always been cowboys, but my hero will always be Brent Thurman.

Dripping Springs Ranch Park and Event Center are welcomed additions to the City of Dripping Springs. The Center has hosted the Dripping with Taste Wine Festival, Dripping Springs Fair and Rodeo, Arts and Crafts shows and the Hays County Livestock Showand the K9 Express Agility Dog Show with many more events scheduled throughout the year. While most wouldn’t think of Dripping Springs as a place to start, that’s only because they haven’t been looking.

The beautiful Texas Hill Country makes for an ideal backdrop for some of the best venues around. The rolling and plush, blue-green hills have already begun turning the heads of soon-to-be newly weds, bringing many wonderful venues to the Dripping Springs area.

Some choose to hold a wedding at one of the local wineries, a scene many say is straight out of Tuscany, but there are plenty of other options around to make the moment memorable. One such venue, the Memory Lane Event Center just outside of town, is aptly named for just that reason. On 18 acres of rustic Hill Country property, the venue was been named one of the The Knot’s “Best of Weddings” for 2013 and 2014.

There is also Pecan Springs Ranch, which has been kept as natural as

possible, with an 1800s era cabin touched up with reclaimed pine from the Bastrop fires to go along with the incredible Pecan trees on property.

And if the hill country isn’t enough, the city isn’t named Dripping Springs for nothing.

There are venues on along the water like Camp Lucy along Onion Creek.

It’s easy to tell who has been to Hamilton Pool before and who hasn’t when you are standing in front of the 50-foot-tall concaved rock grotto with a waterfall flowing over the limestone overhang into a jaded green pool.

It’s the blank stare.

Those who have been to Hamilton Pool are still amazed by the site, but those who haven’t are generally left with the aweinspired, dropped jaw.

There are few places on this earth, and even fewer in Texas, as beautiful as Hamilton Pool.

If you’ve ever been in a large underground cavern, you might be able to picture what Hamilton Pool looks like. The only difference is the ceiling collapsed, allowing the spring to drop to the floor and fill it into a natural pool with one heck of a skylight.

When you first feel the gravity of what’s in front of you, National Geographic photos start coming to mind. This site should be in the middle of some never-before-

seen jungle on another continent.

Not just down the road from Dripping Springs.

It is simply hard to comprehend that a place of such stark beauty is right at your fingertips.

It’s been called the “Most Majestic Swimmin’ Hole” and a “breath-taking natural oasis.”

This unbelievable site was created when the dome of an underground river collapsed due to erosion.

The Hamilton Pool Preserve sits on 232 acres of natural habitat with hiking trails woven through the trees.

At certain times throughout the year, swimming is allowed in Hamilton Pool, but call ahead.

Also, realize that the water is often in the 50 or 60 degree range. Picnicking and hiking are allowed with guided tours given October through April.

There are many different types of relationships, but very few encompass the love that people have for The Salt Lick.

For decades the restaurant was known as some of the best barbecue you could find anywhere. Kansas City or South Carolina, it didn’t matter. When you came to the Salt Lick, it was love at first taste.

After opening in the 60s as a part-time, ‘we’re-open-hereand-there’ type of joint, the locals needed more of the open-pit cooking and sweet BBQ sauce — a lot more.

The Salt Lick quickly became an everyday restaurant, and more than just a local legend. It wasn’t until the 1990s or early 2000s that the mainstream-barbecue lovers started to catch on, but once word got it, it seemed as if the Salt Lick went nationwide overnight.

From 1999 through 2009 The Salt Lick was named as the Best BBQ in Austin in some form or fashion, even though The Salt Lick is based in the little town of Driftwood just a few short miles down the road from Dripping Springs.

In 2009, the restaurant was featured on NBC’s Today Show in a head-to-head taste test against one of Kansas City’s finest. After The Salt Lick received all three votes as the best BBQ, the legend was off and running nationwide.

It was featured in Man v. Food, The Food Network, Texas Monthly, the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and Forbes magazine.

built himself 47 years ago from rock quarried on the property. The pit is still used today.

In the end, you’ve just got to try it for yourself, because it’s hard to put how much people love The Salt Lick into perspective. Here’s a try. In one year, they smoke over twomillion-pounds of meat — and every single bite is loved.

Written by Chris Pike With the trend of micro breweries, wineries and distilleries booming, San Luis Spirits in Dripping Springs has made a name for itself as one of the most unique family owned micro distilleries in the country.

Since its first batch hit counters across the Texas Hill Country in April 2007, the company has grown steadily by crafting quality, award-winning spirits. Their most notable product, Dripping Springs Vodka, won the 2008 gold for “Best in Class” as well as the Vodka Purity Trophy at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition.

Each batch is micro-distilled in hand-made copper pot stills more than 20 times in 50-gallon batches, using Midwestern GMO-free corn and pure, mineral rich Hill Country artesian spring water. Every drop is then slow filtered through activated carbon imported from Sweden. In these small batches, crafters are able to put quality over quantity and focus on the fine details of their product.

Written by Chris Pike When John Gambini, a native Texan of Italian decent, returned to his home state, he was determined to found a family winery somewhere in the rolling Texas Hill Country.

Much to his dismay he discovered that this unique part of the state was already home to nearly 40 other wineries. So, instead, Gambini, along with brother-in-law, Rick Mensik, purchased 17 acres of land just north of Dripping Springs to start an olive orchard, the only certified organic one in the state. Now, five years after it’s beginning, the Texas Hill Country Olive Co. provides some of the best, most awarded, olive oil products in the country.

Rated in the top five olive oil producers in the United States by The Wall Street Journal, the Texas Hill Country Olive Co. blends the olives from two varieties of trees, the Arbequina and the Mission, to create their Miller’s Blend Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which won the Gold Medal in this years International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition in Los Angeles. These particular trees are perfect for growing in the Texas Hill Country, as it’s climate is similar to that of Spain, the worlds largest olive producer, and Italy, the second largest.

Written by Chris Pike After driving their daughter, Shelby, to countless dancehalls around the Texas Hill Country, Nick Dotin and his wife Gay finally decided to open one closer to home, much to Shelby and her friends’ delight.

Located in Dripping Springs, the Mercer Street Dancehall occupies a remodeled barn formally owned by H.C. Carter, an old cowboy/developer in the area. The walls are covered in authentic decorations.

“There’s a story behind every one,” says Dotin, most notably an enormous longhorn skull that hangs above the bar. The skull is said to have belonged to a psychotic female longhorn named Nicole.

The Hall also boasts a 1400-squarefoot dance floor. Two old home plates

still lie near the center of the floor as a reminder of the buildings former use as an indoor baseball academy.

What makes this place so special according to Dotin, is that it is owned and operated by the family.

“My 89-year-old, soon to be 90year-old, mother-in-law runs the door, my 17- soon to be 18-year-old daughter teaches dance lessons and of course my wife, Gay, works here too,” he said. Dotin hopes that one day his daughter will take over running the hall.

The stage at Mercer Street Dancehall is favorite among musicians and guests alike. Nick, who is a musician himself as well as an expert builder, built the stage to his exact specifications. It is tuned and insulated to keep low frequency waves from accumulating, preventing that

The Hall is a perfect venue for wedding receptions, parties, benefits, etc. Gay Dotin has many years experience in the hotel industry and is happy to help plan and coordinate any event.

Nick and the family will be hosting the Brent Thurman Memorial Benefit at the Mercer Street Dancehall this June.

This is a Pro Bull Riders Association event honoring Brent Thurman, a world-class champion bull rider who lost his life doing what he loved. More than 40 professional bull riders will be attending and Dripping Springs’ own country music star, Michael Myers, will be headlining.

The dance hall is a safe and clean place allowing all ages.

“We want mothers to teach their sons how to be gentlemen, how to dance, and how to socialize. We want fathers to teach their daughters how to dance,” explains Dotin.

The Dotin family expects to have their full mixed beverage license by the second anniversary of the Hall, but for now they offer 31 different beers (all kept at an icy 34 degrees), eight types of wine as well as six types of wine coolers. Sodas and water can also be purchased. They will soon feature the new Mercer Street Food truck to offer hill country favorites to guests.

The Mercer Street Dance Hall is open ThursdaySaturday 4 p.m. to midnight, with happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m.

Mercer Street was the home of some of the first businesses Dripping Springs ever had. Most were built from the 1870s to the 1940s, and many of the storefronts have remained unchanged for decades or even a century.

Thus, Mercer Street is considered one of the oldest and most historic areas in Dripping Springs.

In late 2013, the city began the Mercer Street Improvement Project to improve connectivity, mobility, safety and security, which is in the process of completion.

Two thousand, six hundred and fifty feet of sidewalk was added, a pedestrian bridge to cross the dripping springs, crosswalks, bicycle racks, benches, streetlights and historic district monument signs.

Next, landscaping, trees and historic markers will be added.

“We could not be more excited about what this project means for our community,” said Dripping Springs’ Mayor Todd Purcell. “The revitalization of this historic area will have a significant impact on residents and businesses alike.”

The new improvements are already having an effect.

“What is happening is that Mercer Street is turning into a town center,” Dripping Springs Visitors Bureau Director Pam Owens said. “There are businesses that people can go to in the day or the night. It’s turning into an entertainment district that is family oriented and fun for adults.”

One of the more unique buildings on Mercer Street is the Barber Shop, which is not a barber shop at all.

“It’s unusual to have a bar called the Barber Shop,” Owens said. “We have to explain to people all the time that

you don’t have to get your hair cut when you go.”

There are restaurants and coffee shops, a candy shop and a dance hall among the many businesses on Mercer Street.

One business, Garnett’s Propane, has some of the most direct history in the town. The Garnett’s have owned the building since the family ran a blacksmith shop on Mercer Street.

Almost every building on the street has been retrofitted, so the history is truly right in front of your eyes.

The Dripping Springs Visitors Bureau has a brochure you can pickup on Mercer Street that will give you a walking tour of the history while you walk, eat, shop and, maybe, have a quick stop at the Barber Shop, so make a trip to the Mercer Street Historical District to experience the history yourself.
