ere’s something that could really put things in perspective. At the London Olympics held in 2012, India had its best ever haul of, wait for it, six medals; the US, which was at the forefront of the medal tally, had a haul of 104. And the Winter Olympics in 2010 were a different matter altogether, with three athletes representing the billionstrong nation. With the 2014 edition of the Winter Olympics coming up, we’re mired in issues, and the US? The US is looking at ways to build an Olympian athlete. From creating a customized wind tunnel for jumpers to a bobsled built like a race-car, we bring you the five technologies that can give the US an edge over its competitors. Medicine, at the other end of the spectrum, looks to science to improve lives, provide hope and cure debilitating diseases such as cancer. PopSci takes a look at whether we’re asking the right questions in our approach to tackling cancer. There is, indeed, hope for the future. This issue, Bollyshowtime showcases the best of bollywood with indepth look at IIFA awards 2014 held in Tampa bay, FL. Monkey Business

F

or Pakistanis who raise and train them, monkeys are an important source of income in an impoverished country, and they form a strong bond with the animals. The monkeys are usually captured in the wild when they are babies and then trained. A trained monkey can fetch 20,000 to 30,000 rupees ($190 to $285). One such trainer Ataullah Niazi, 46, owns three monkeys that he says he loves like they are his own children. His monkey can make around 500 rupees (about $5) a day, which helps him feed his family of eight. He’s been doing this type of work since he was 11 years old. It takes at least three months to train a monkey to dance, salute, shake hands and perform the other tricks needed, Niazi said. Usually the owners go to the northwestern Swat Valley or the town of Murree, outside of Islamabad, to find the babies. But animal rights activists criticize the practice of training monkeys to perform. ‘’This is a sheer violation of wildlife laws,’’ said Atif Yaqub, an official at the Pakistan Wildlife Foundation. He said the monkeys are often abused by trainers who beat them with a stick during their training and put a rope around their neck so they don’t run away.

wo Indian-origin men, Abraham Verghese and Sanjeev Arora are among the five recipients of the prestigious Heinz Awards this year. They will receive the award in US on 3rd April. The award includes a medallion inscribed with an image of late US senator John Heinz on one side and a rendering of a globe passing between two hands on the other; and a cash award of $250,000 to be given to each of the award recipient. Born in Ethiopia, Abraham Verghese is a professor at Stanford University Medical School. Verghese’s parents belong to Kerala. Sanjeev Arora is a San Francisco-based entrepreneur who was born in Kota, Rajasthan. He has contributed to community healthcare using video conferencing technology which has brought a revolution worth recognizing. Instituted in 1993, Heinz Awards are presented every year by the Heinz Family Foundation to honor the contribution made by outstanding individuals in the fields of arts, humanities, environment, human condition, public policy, technology, economy and employment. Teresa Heinz, Chairman of the Heinz Family Foundation said, “This year’s Heinz Awards recipients show that the antidote for the uncertainties and fears of our times lies where it always has – in the imagination, determination, brilliance and creativity of the people among us who see possibility where others see only barriers.” She believes the recipients of the award are “changing our world for the better.”

Sanjeev Arora

Has dedicated his work to increasing access to life-saving health care for people living in rural and medically underserved areas.

“But that is not what makes them so inspiring for the rest of us. The secret to their special alchemy is available to any of us if we, too, are willing to challenge the status quo, to be passionate in the pursuit of bettering the world we live in and to apply whatever strengths we have to the hard work of transformation” she added. Heinz is also honoring Salman Khan’s ‘Khan Academy’ which is a nonprofit educational organization for its revolutionizing contribution that has changed how millions of children and students of all ages across the globe are learning various diverse subjects such as mathematics, biology, economics, art history and astronomy.

Quick Thinking Dad Delivers Baby After Doctor, Nurse Flee

aheer Ali says he and his laboring wife, Indira, were abandoned by hospital staff when another patient needed a C-section. (Image credit: Zaheer Ali) A Boynton Beach, Fla., hospital is staying mum after a maternity ward mix-up that left a dad to deliver his own daughter. Zaheer Ali says he and his laboring wife, Indira, were abandoned by hospital staff when another patient needed an emergency C-section. “My wife was screaming,” Zaheer Ali told the Palm Beach Post. “The nurse says, ‘You have to wait.’” The Alis arrived to Bethesda Hospital

East Saturday night and were given an induction drug to speed up the delivery, according to the Post. Indira Ali’s labor was moving along quickly. When a patient down the hall needed the C-section, her doctor stopped the induction drip to stall the birth until she could return, the Post reported. But baby Aaliyah couldn’t wait. She was born weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces, with just her mom and dad in the room “It must have happened very rapidly, because I was only in the C-section for 30 minutes,” obstetrician Dr. Elana Deutsch told the Post, adding that a nurse should have stayed with the couple but was likely “nervous” about

being there alone. “By the time she [the nurse] was back in the room, the baby was in the bed,” Deutsch said. Deutsch returned to the room just in time to cut the umbilical cord, the Post reported. “The patient was obviously very upset,” she said. “I was very upset.” Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Kronhaus declined to comment on the ordeal, citing patient privacy rules, but stressed that mom and baby are “doing very well.” She also confirmed to ABC News that the family was offered “special accommodations” at the hospital but said she couldn’t say whether they were still there.

I

ndian-Americans crossed another milestone Dec. 19 when a Hyderabad-born attorney was appointed Secretary of State for Texas, the first such position to be held by a person of Indian origin. Governor Rick Perry announced the appointment of Nandita Venkateswaran Berry, 45, as his Secretary of State, calling the Houston-based attorney one of the most accomplished in the state. She steps into the office Jan.7. Born in Hyderabad in 1968, Berry is married to controversial radio talk-show host and former Houston city councilman Michael Berry, a conservative with Tea Party links boasting close to 85,000 Facebook followers. They have been married for 21 years and have an adopted son from Ethiopia, according to the website of news radio AM740 KTRH of Houston which hosts the Michael Berry Show. “Very proud that my wife, Nandita (Venkateswaran) Berry is the 109th Secretary of State for the great state of Texas,” Michael Berry said on Facebook. “She is smart, beautiful, accomplished, and kind. Anyone who doesn’t like me should know that she is her own

person, and she’ll do a great job.” Nandita Berry is no stranger to Gov. Perry, who appointed her to the University Of Houston System Board Of Regents in 2009. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mt. Carmel College, Bangalore. After coming to the U.S. at the age of 21, she got another bachelors degree, this time in political science, from the University of Houston. She got her law degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 1995, and was admitted to the Texas bar the same year. Currently, she is a senior counsel with the law firm of Locke Lord LLP, where she practices corporate and securities law as inhouse counsel for El Paso Corporation, one of North America’s largest independent natural gas producers. As the 109th Texas Secretary of State, Nandita Berry becomes the first IndianAmerican to fill this state-level post anywhere in the country. Come Jan. 7, she becomes the state’s chief elections officer; the governor’s liaison on border and Mexican affair; and Texas’ chief protocol officer for state and international matters. Her office also serves as the formal repository for official and business records; publishes government rules and regulations; keeps the state seal and attests to the governor’s signature on official documents. Calls to Berry’s office were not returned.

“Nandita Berry personifies what is possible through hard work and dedication in the State of Texas,” Gov. Perry is quoted saying in a release. “Arriving from India at the age of 21 with nothing but $200 to her name, she worked diligently to earn her law degree and has since become one of the most accomplished attorneys in the state. Her work ethic, intelligence and wide array of experiences will serve her capably in her new duties as Secretary of State, and I look forward to working with her to keep Texas the best place in the country to live, work and raise a family.” “I am truly humbled to follow in the footsteps of Stephen F. Austin, Texas’ first Secretary of State,” Berry is quoted saying in the release. “Like him, I came to Texas in search of a better life and the limitless opportunities to be found across our great state. Every day, I see Austin’s pioneering spirit alive in Texas, and this great honor proves once again Texas is the land of opportunity, both in the private sector and public service.” Berry has been on the board of several institutions including the Houston Zoo, the South Asian Chamber of Commerce, the Houston Area Women’s Center, and the Community Family Center of Houston.

I

n less than half a second, Google pulled up 544 million results for Satya Nadella, 46, the day after he was appointed the new Microsoft CEO Feb. 4. The Hyderabad-born Nadella becomes only the third CEO of the technology multinational, and is being feted in India as well as in the U.S. Veteran Silicon Valley entrepreneurs say he stands on the shoulders of those who built a foundation for IndianAmericans to succeed and the community should not be surprised any more when one of its own is elevated to the top. Close family friends describe Nadella as a “listener” but also a doer, whose partnership with his high school sweetheart Anupama Priyadarshini Nadella, is strong, stable, warm and loving

Boy from Begumpet The boy who studied in Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet, where teachers described him”as a soft-spoken and intelligent student, keen to listen and go deep into the subjects,” is now the Microsoft CEO who seemingly impressed the board with his loyalty, his knowledge of a complex company, and his vision of next generation technology. In his first webcast after taking over as CEO Feb. 4, Nadella’s mantra for Microsoft was the vision

of a “Mobile First Cloud First” company. The board saw a man who joined Microsoft in 1992, had the staying power, the insider knowledge and the multidisciplinary background to pull it off. Nadella got his bachelor’s degree in electronics and communication engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) when it was under Mangalore University.

His parents are B. N. Yugandhar and Prabhavati Nadella. His father was a member of India’s Planning Commission under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2004-2009, and also served as secretary to the prime minister, secretary of rural development, and director of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration.

He says he “always wanted to build things,” and wanted to go into computer science. That brought him to the U.S. to do his masters in computer science from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Anupama Nadella is the daughter of retired IAS officer K.R. Venugopal, best known for developing former Andhra Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao’s “Rupees 2 per kilogram” rice scheme. The Nadellas visit ndia every year without fail, according to family friend Vijay Vashee.

He also picked up an MBA from University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

Where he Came From From his various interviews and pronouncements, it is apparent Nadella sees himself first and foremost as a family man. He and his wife Anupama Priyadarshini Nadella whom he knew since high school, come from well-known families that rose to prominence in the Indian Administrative Service. Born Bukkapuram Nadella Satyanarayana, his family hails from Bukkapuram village in Rayalaseema district, Andhra Pradesh.

“It’s very important for him to have his children meet the grandparents and in-laws,” said Vashee who was employee number 160 at Microsoft in 1982, retired in 2001, and is credited with developing PowerPoint into a $900 million enterprise.

Family Man Nadella’s three children, two girls Tara and Divya, and a boy Zain, are his main occupation after work. One of the girls and the boy are special needs children, about whom Vashee refuses to talk except to say, “Whenever I go March 2014

25

Notable People there, the two girls run out and give me a big hug. They’ll come and leap into my arms.” In a September interview with New Zealand’s Paymark, Nadella was asked how he balances work and family. “At home, raising kids or maintaining a loving relationship, realizing that you have achieved something fantastic is much harder to see,” Nadella said. “For example: making sure you are at home, reading to your kids every night, just trying hard to be a great parent with just hope that it may make your children great people and parents themselves, but that for most people you won’t know the result of your efforts for 20 years and nothing is certain.” Nadella reads a lot, Vashee says. “I read 1,000 pages a week, but mostly business stuff. But Satya reads like my wife Sita does – four times more than I do. And the two of them often exchange notes on the books they read – a lot of historical books, lineages of royalty in Europe, Russia, or the Mughals in India.” Nadella admitted in an email to employees, “I buy more books than I can finish. I sign up for more online courses than I can complete.” The one thing he promises to do however, is tweet more often. “first commitment as CEO … I won’t wait 4 years between tweets,” he says on his Twitter account that shows 89,000 followers. It also shows his last tweet was July 11, 2010. Nadella begins his letter to employees saying he is humbled. Then he introduces himself as a father, and a husband of 22 years. “And like anyone else, a lot of what I do and how I think has been shaped by my family and my overall life experiences. Many who know me say I am also defined by my curiosity and thirst for learning. …. I fundamentally believe that if you are not learning new things, you stop doing great and useful things. So family, curiosity and hunger for knowledge all define me.”Anupama Nadella’s name seldom if ever surfaces anywhere. But she is more than an integral part of his existence. “In a relationship, when one person is facing a very demanding time, the person who is with them has to have a very strong heart and mind,” says Vashee. “Anupama is very clear about what she wants, what to get, and she exudes a warmth that I cannot put into words. When I look at them, I see a very strong bond, very

stable bond, a warm and loving bond.” Anupama Nadella is able to free up Satya Nadella for the long hours he may need at work. “But come Saturday and Sunday and Satya switches gears,” Vashee says. “When I watch him around the kids, he is very different from how he behaves with his employees.” As for the interaction with his wife, Vashee says, “I see communication – with a warmth and clarity. Not that there may not be any hot buttons. But clarity stands out.”

Leadership Style “During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” Microsoft founder Bill Gates says in the release announcing Nadella’s appointment. “Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together,” Gates adds. Nadella asked Gates to be his Technology Advisor as he took office. Vashee has experienced Gates’ management style and he also saw Vashee operating in the company’s Seattle offices. Gates matured over time, Vashee says – every fifth word stopped beginning with the letter “F,” and Friday-night beer bashes came to an end. Nadella showed glimpses of his management style way back in the early 1990s. “He (Nadella) is a great listener. He absorbs information; is quick to decide what information to absorb and what to put aside and focus on; and he is quick to act,” Vashee said. Once Vashee had a very creative but highly disruptive employee and he sought Nadella’s help. “Satya and I talked about it. Then Satya handled it, talked to the person and ended the disruption without shutting down his (the employee’s) creative aspect,” Vashee recalls. Techie prima donnas pushing and shoving their ideas can sometimes be a deterrent. “One has to know how far to let them go ahead and when to come down on them, because we have to function as a team,” Vashee says, and Nadella has that down pat. News accounts contrast Nadella’s style with that of his showy and sometimes boisterous predecessor Steve Ballmer. If Nadella exemplifies that cool, calm, unhurried, wellconsidered, seemingly cooperative demeanor

that depends on building partnerships, it cannot be taken as a sign of weakness say those who know him well. “Soft spoken does not mean indecisive. He is very decisive, and pretty aggressive about timing of things that have to be delivered,” says Vashee. Nadella has worked on services such as search engine Bing, and the cloud platform Azure, both areas where Microsoft was a nonplayer. “Now they are double-digits in market share and are at least being talked about,” Vashee says to prove his point about Nadella’s ability to drive product delivery and achieve results. And if Nadella ever raises his voice, “it’s to be stern, not angry. It’s to be emphatic.”

Standing on Strong Shoulders Kanwal Rekhi, co-founder of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a mentoring organization established in 1992, to help aspiring Indian techies build businesses, says nobody, least of all Indian- Americans, should be surprised with Nadella’s appointment. “It would have been unimaginable when I arrived 46 years ago.” But things started changing in the 1980s when Indians, who were generally seen as techies at best, began to emerge as entrepreneurs. Nevertheless, to become the head of Microsoft, the General Motors of technology, “shows Indians have arrived,” Rekhi said. According to Vivek Wadhwa, a tech entrepreneur and fellow at Stanford University’s Rock Center for Corporate Governance, Indian-Americans were not seen as good managers before. But their prowess at running companies has been proved both in Silicon Valley and corporate America for many years now as they built an infrastructure to support each other. Suren Dutta, former CEO of TiE Global says the choice of Nadella “is a wonderful testimonial to why United States attracts, identifies and rewards talented immigrants based on the culture of meritocracy.” “Microsoft finally decided that the company was complex and only an insider could understand it, but a younger person who can take Microsoft through the time warp,” Rekhi said. Vashee wants the West to see Nadella not as an Indian who made it big, but as the right

Notable People guy to take over Microsoft.

morale boost and motivation to “aspire beyond and target higher levels of success.”

Basking in Glory

On Nadella’s Facebook account, Deep Shanker says, “proud moment for the entire nation n specially for an mitian,” referring to Manipal Institute of Technology. “Those guys are great,” Nadella responds.

Back in Manipal and elsewhere, Indians were proud of Nadella’s appointment. His Begumpet high school held a special assembly where students and alumnus gathered to celebrate. One classmate, Phani Kondepudi, told The Hindu newspaper, “In academics, he (Nadella) was always among the top 20, but never first or second,” as if surprised that Nadella was now the top-dog. In a press release Manipal University reminded everyone where he got his first degree. Nadella’s teacher at Manipal, Dr. Vinod (no last name) says he was a “sincere, quiet student” at college who passed with distinction; Narasimha Bhat, a Manipal alumnus, says Nadella has put the university on the map; In the same release, Pallavi Reddy, a student at Manipal who got a job with Microsoft after interning there, says it’s a

The Poetry of Code and Cricket Like most boys growing up in India, Nadella is a fan of cricket and played on his school team. He calls cricket his “passion” and says he learnt a lot from it. “I think playing cricket taught me more about working in teams and leadership that has stayed with me throughout my career,” he says on his company biography. The website merepix.com carries a note from Nadella reflecting on an incident that had a lifelong influence on him. During a cricket match in school Nadella was

doing less than a stellar job of bowling and admires how the captain handled it. “He (team captain) took over the next over himself, got our team the much-needed breakthrough and then threw the ball back to me in the next over! I will never forget that. What made him do that? Is this what they call leadership?” Nadella asks himself. “These are the kind of questions I have since reflected on as I approach many of the things I do today leading teams.” He enjoys watching Test cricket, which he notes, “is the longest form of any sport in the world” where games can go on for days. “I love it,” he says. “There’s so many subplots in it, it’s like reading a Russian novel.” Nadella finds reading poetry, both Indian and American, relaxes him. Distilling something to its intrinsic value is what poetry does and what software coding does, he says. For him poetry, “It’s like code,” where large prose in compressed into its essence. And according to Nadella, the best code is poetry.

Reflection

FoB No More By: Homayra Shaikh

“K

now yourself. Never forget where you came from, and reach back to help someone else come forward too.” The significance behind these words from Alpha Alexander is one that first and second generation South Asian youth in North America can learn much from, myself included. While growing up in North America, obtaining all the comforts and rights that our parents and grandparents hoped for us when they immigrated here, we have also gained an unexpected trait. The trait of arrogance, an undeserved sense of superiority which we express each time we say “He’s such a FOB” or jokingly jest with our friends “Dude, what’s up with your hair, you look like a FOB”. The term probably does not need any explanation, but for the few that may be wondering, FOB is an acronym for Fresh Off the Boat, and it is an offensive term. A Google search of the term will give you this definition: Noun, informal, offensive, a recent immigrant especially regarded as being unassimilated. I am guilty of using the term myself, many times. FOB is often used to jokingly tease friends, to describe someone who actually is a recent South Asian immigrant, and in some cases to refer to someone showing what is deemed to be an attribute of a recent immigrant. These attributes could range from hair slicked back with coconut oil, the strong smell of curry emitting from one’s clothes, the tendency to continuously

30

Bollywood Showtime

stare at other South Asians, the accent that replaces every W with a V, and phrases such as “Oh she is looking smart” or “The food is just too good”. The difference in behavior, words and fashion choices of an individual living within North America for a lengthy period of time compared to a recent immigrant cannot be denied. Yes, we speak, dress and view the world differently…as do all individuals who have grown up in different countries. How does this make us better than recent immigrants though? How does it justify our making fun of them using labels such as FOB? By a chance fluke or a series of predestined events, our families happened to immigrate to Canada or USA before theirs. No thanks to us. Our grandparents or parents struggled and gave us the means to live this life. Again, no thanks to us. Then why the pride, why the judgmental outlook, and why the unkindness to our own people? Our grandparents or parents once passed through similar circumstances as those whom we deem inferior to us and laugh at. Often, we will hear our elders’ stories of struggle. Even after the passing of decades they will remember and mention those rare individuals who lent them a helping hand in a strange country and a word of advice or encouragement when they were on the verge of giving up and going back. We should strive to be those individuals. We should strive to remove the term FOB from our vocabulary and instead fill it with kind

words, words of support and hope. We are fortunate to be in a position where we can understand the challenges new immigrants from the Indian Subcontinent face. We see the remnants of these challenges in the callused hands of our university educated fathers who spent their life working in factories, and in the enduring patience of our mothers who never let their children catch on to the loneliness they were feeling. Most importantly, we see what our fellow immigrant South Asians and their children can accomplish when we look at the numerous achievements of first and second generation South Asians like ourselves. Let us take advantage of this opportunity. And so, I leave you with the inspiring words I began with:

“Know yourself. Never forget where you came from, and reach back to help someone else come forward too.” – Alpha Alexander

Immigration Changes

Legal status to undocumented relatives of US military

I

mmigration reform may be stalled in Congress, but a new Obama administration policy is extending legal status and military benefits to thousands of illegal immigrants who are the spouses, parents and children of American military members. Supporters say the policy -- which applies to active-duty military, reservists and veterans -- is long overdue. “Those veterans and those men and women who serve in the National Guard certainly deserve the peace of mind that their family members will not be deported,” immigration attorney Faye Kolly said. But critics say the policy is tantamount to backdoor amnesty. “A whole class of aliens with no right to be in the United States are suddenly going to be allowed to live and work here on the basis of their relationship with military and veterans,” said Dan Cadman, with the Center for Immigration Studies. The exemption, called parole in place, came in the form of a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services “policy memorandum.” It was not submitted to or approved by Congress, and the regulations were not

published in the Federal Register, which allows for public comment prior to a rule taking effect. “I don’t want to overstate it, but it sounds very similar to imperial decree if you ask me,” Cadman said. “The public had no chance to comment on this new policy. I believe the way this was done was illegal.” Obama administration officials say the new rules do not require congressional action because they’re based on existing statutes. “It’s clearly within the president’s authority to enforce the law and choose which immigrants he thinks are the priority,” said Brent Wilkes of the League of United Latin American Citizens. “These folks aren’t threats. They’ve got a relative that’s serving our nation.” One face of this new policy is Christian Gonzalez, a retired Marine who has been recommended for a Purple Heart. He was attacked five days in a row by improvised explosive devices (IED’s) in Afghanistan. The last one nearly claimed his life. “For a brief period, I was paralyzed from the

waist down. I suffered a pretty traumatic brain injury from that,” said the San Antonio resident, sitting alongside his wife Laura, who was brought to the U.S. illegally as a child. “Without her, you know, I’d be lost with my disabilities. Critics only look at her as an illegal alien. They’re not looking at her as the spouse of a veteran,” he said. Christian and Laura met in middle school. He enlisted in the Marines during high school. They got married when he returned from multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Under the new policy, tens of thousands of illegal aliens like Laura will be offered a green card and legal residency. As the wife of a veteran, she would be entitled to his health care, education and survivor benefits, as well as simple things like a Social Security number and driver’s license. “I’m covered, my kids are covered, but the woman that runs the house, she’s not covered. So that’s probably the hardest part,” Gonzalez said. “Now she’ll be able to get a job, go to school. It would make her feel like she contributes more to the family.” March 2014

Entertainment Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Vidya Balan, Vir Das, Ram Kapoor, Purab Kohli Direction: Saket Chaudhary Genre: Romantic Comedy Duration: 2 hours 23 minutes Story: Sid & Trisha have moved beyond dating days. They’ve survived multiple lovers’ tiffs and overcome PMS (read: pre-marriage syndrome). Bravo! Now they are a happily married couple. Wait! Only until a ‘pregnant’ pause changes it all.

Review: He says it. She disagrees. He reacts. She overacts. He makes mistakes, he says sorry. She makes mistakes, 'he' says sorry. So there! Even geniuses like Socrates and Einstein couldn't crack a fool-proof plan to a 'happy marriage'. Even novel cosmic concepts like Men are from Mars and Women are from all over the place (lol!) can't explain this 'heavenly' intervention. So then? Let's take a look at Saket Chaudhary's insightful story of shaadi and its shocking effects. Sid’s (Farhan) married life seems to be rocking with his adventurous wife Trisha (Vidya), until a chance ‘unprotected’ moment of pleasure lands them with a ‘bundle’ of unwanted problems. He puts his musical ambitions to rest, from composing jingles to singing lullabies for his little girl (even breaking into ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ - Wake up, Guns ‘n’ Roses! Hilarious!). Trisha turns into an idiosyncratic, full-time mommy and Sid is left missing their lovely ‘twosome’ life. Pillow talk turns to potty talk and spousal spasms crawl into their shaadi, leading Sid to seek advice from broin-law (Ram Kapoor, lending good support). Does the quick-fix save-the-shaadi solution create more cracks, or stoke the chemistry? The best part is that Sid and Trisha don’t ‘fake’ it. Ever! They are believable characters living real life situations. Yet, their quirkiness leaves you with delightful guffaws. Saket’s story (sequel to ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’) pulls everything together skillfully, with conversations that turn into epigrams and chemistry that exudes wit and lovability. There’s nothing schmaltzy or superficial about it.

di Ke

The director strikes a fine balance between humour and emotion in this sliceof-marriage story. The first half takes a while to catch up, but the dialogues (Arshad Sayed) provide ample laughs, while giving wisdom for wedded bliss. Vir Das in his funky avatar is a riot. Vidya is brilliant and hits a high note in the emotional scenes. The film belongs to Farhan who stuns you with his straight-faced witticisms and plethora of expressions that amuse and move dramatically. Single or married, this film will have more of a ‘special effect’ than ‘side effect’ on you.

OMG! ACTRESS’S PRIVATE VIDEO RECORDED BY A CREW MEMBER

Scandal hits Bollywood Again

She’s a very popular face down south, and now, she’s slowly but surely gaining popularity in Bollywood as well. She’s just a film old in the Hindi industry and is busy working on her second project, which also features big names. If latest buzz is to be believed, this newbie is being harassed by a crew member (to be specific, a light boy), who is said to have recorded a private video of her and the film’s director without their knowledge. Apparently, the guy is blackmailing the actress and the filmmaker for cash. He’s been sending a string of mails continuously demanding for big bucks. This has been going on for quite sometime now. He has threatened to put up the video on web if they did not meet to his demands. It is also heard that the actress is extremely stressed with all that is happening around her and hence she hasn’t been shooting regularly. While we cannot reveal the name, you might as well take a guess who she is.

WHATS COOKING BETWEEN THESE TWO?

VARUN DHAWAN JUST CAN’T KEEP HIS HANDS OFF NARGIS FAKHRI

O

kay, so before your imaginations run wild, what we meant to say was, Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur look awesome together in their upcoming film, Daawat E Ishq, as they shake a leg to the tunes of a number from the same. For the first time they’ve been paired opposite each other and we must say, we’re loving them together. Can’t wait for the film’s trailer to hit screens, already. Actually, we wouldn’t mind if they paired up together in real life too, *just saying*.

Looks like Varun Dhawan is completely mesmerized by model turned actress Nargis Fakhri. At least that’s what is visible while the duo are on a promotional spree for their upcoming film Main Tera Hero. The duo’s latest outing was on an open double-decker bus amid the crowd of thousands on the streets of Mumbai.

Just a few stills are doing rounds on the web, and their chemistry is already visible. Moreover, both are super talented actors, so they are bound to create magic on screen. While Pari looks like a breath of fresh air – her usual bubbly and chirpy self, Adi is oozing sex appeal. He can wear all the crazy clothes he wants, but you will always be smokin’ hot!

The SOTY actor was seemed to have been in high spirits around Nargis. His hands were all over her. He held her by her waist, carried her to the stage, pulled her cheeks… basically he just couldn’t resist her. Varun was in complete awe the American babe.

Daawat E Ishq has struck the right cords with it’s audience, already. Can’s wait for it’s release. The movie directed by Habib Faisal and produced by Aditya Chopra is set to release on May 9.

Varun Dhawan will romance Nargis Fakhri and Ileana D’Cruz in Main Tera Hero, which is set to hit the theatres on April 4.

Well, we’ve picked a variety of casual wear for you, haven’t we? But one can’t forget that summer is the shaadi season in our country. And wearing the heavy embroidered desi clothes during summertime might be a good enough reason to miss these occasions. But when we looked at our favourite divas like Kangana Ranaut and Sonam Kapoor, wethinks that Indian wear can be summer-friendly too. Here’s how!

KANGANA RANAUT During the promotions of Queen, Kangs was spotted in a Pankaj and Nidhi suit, which was classy and simple and yet so shaadi-material. Sonam too was spotted in a cotton Payal Pratap outfit during the promotions of one of her films. While these designers could burn a huge hole in your pocket, there’s no doubt the outfits are droolworthy. However, if you want these looks, you should check the Indian wear at Diya stores or then Westside store, they offer you some beautiful designs and fits and affordable rates.

Q: Your secret of success? A: I don’t think success or winning has a particular formula. Success comes from believing in yourself and not being someone you are expected to be. Being a sportsman has taught me to be independent. I have become a lot fearless after my films have succeeded and have given me the power to do different kinds of films. My next film is an English film, Finding Fanny Fernandes. It is set in Goa and is a different kind of film.

Q: Are you ruled by your heart? A: Completely. Every decision I make, including relationships, come straight from the heart. Sometimes people might question my choices, but it comes from the heart.

Q: What is the place for a man in your life? A: For me, being in a relationship is very, very important. Women feel complete when you are in a relationship. But it has fill to you up, make you a better person. If it pulls you down, or you become someone you are not, I am not sure you with the right person. I had both.

Q: Status with Ranveer? A: I’m at a stage when I don’t want to rush into anything. For a young girl, I should have the option of knowing a person and to be sure about the person you land up with. I understand the scrutiny of people, wanting to know about us.

Q: How will you react if you see your boyfriend in bed with your archrival? A: Oh no! I can’t go through that again.

Around the World

GLOBALNEWS India to set record spending for elections NEW DELHI: Indian politicians are expected to spend around $5 billion on campaigning for elections next month — a sum second only to the most expensive US presidential campaign of all time — in a splurge that could give India’s floundering economy a temporary boost. India’s campaign spend, which can include cash stuffed in envelopes as well as multi-million-dollar ad campaigns, has been estimated at 300 billion rupees by the Centre for Media Studies, which tracks spending. That is triple the expenditure the centre said was spent on electioneering in the last national poll in 2009 — partly a reflection of a high-octane campaign by probusiness opposition candidate for prime minister, Narendra Modi, who started nationwide rallies and advertising last year. “They started much before, and they are also focusing on states where they are traditionally not strong. They are leaving no area untouched,” said N Bhaskara Rao, chairman of the Centre for Media Studies. The campaign spending for this election could give a boost to the economy, which has been heading for its longest slump since the 1980s. Economists have forecast a second year of growth below 5 percent in the financial year ending this month. Candidate and party funding in India is opaque and the source of much of the spending is hard to ascertain, but the Centre for Media Studies and other transparency advocates say the main contenders

have built up large war chests. “This election spending largesse will help to boost Indian consumption expenditure over the second quarter of 2014, but this will be a temporary spike,” said Rajiv Biswas, the Asia-Pacific chief economist at IHS Global Insight. India’s projected campaign spending is only rivalled by the $7 billion spent by candidates, parties and support groups in the 2012 U.S. presidential race, the world’s most expensive, according to data provided by the U.S. election commission. Spending on previous Indian elections have benefited a wide range of businesses, from media groups and advertisers that rake in campaign-ad revenues to consumerbased firms that capitalise indirectly on the overall jump in spending, such as motor-bike manufacturers and brewers like United Spirits (UNSP. NS). India’s advertising industry expects to see an $800 million injection during the election season, according to an outlook by the country’s largest local agency, Madison Media. That should benefit media firms, such as DB Corp (DBCL. NS), which owns the high-circulation Hindi language daily Dainik Bhaskar.

Cash hidden in newspapers Much of India’s campaign spend will remain in its thriving black economy. Rules allow candidates to spend 7 million rupees on campaigns for a parliament seat but the real cost of winning is about 10 times that, thanks to spending on rallies, fuel and media campaigns that often include payments for coverage. Indian politicians regularly bribe voters with cash payouts or alcohol to secure their support. Recent state elections have seen innovations such as getting money to voters via mobile phone credit and envelopes of cash delivered in morning papers. In the last three years, election authorities seized from politicians

a total of about $32.65 million in the form of concealed cash, some if it stashed in helicopters, milk trucks and even funeral vans, a former election commissioner said. The dates for the monthlong election starting on April 7 were announced last week, with polls staggered in nine stages to help security forces prevent polling booth fraud.Despite evidence of vote-buying, India’s elections are now largely seen as free and fair on polling day. However, chief election commissioner VS Sampath said on Wednesday he was worried about “money power” - heavy spending and the use of illegal funds to influence the outcome. The Centre for Media Studies’ spending projections are based on analyzes of rising costs in local and state elections in the past five years. It also surveys voters on prevalence of bribes.

Modi fund raising Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, got off to an early start in campaigning, pushing into the south where the BJP is weak and has avoided spending money in the past. Modi’s BJP-led coalition has a strong lead over the ruling Congress party in opinion polls, but it is unlikely to win an outright majority. Some of Modi’s fundraising is led by a seven-member team, including Deepak Kanth, a former investment banker previously with Citibank in London. This team has organized an online fund-raising drive in India and is also targeting donations from wealthy Indians living in Hong Kong and Singapore. This team has only raised $4 million, a party source said, but shows how far Modi is casting his net for campaign funds.

News

India to block U.S. trade probes, ready for fight at WTO India has decided to block investigations by the United States into its trade policies and patent laws, and prepare for a battle at the World Trade Organization (WTO), a move that could escalate already-strained tension between the two countries. New Delhi is furious about a threat of trade sanctions made by the U.S. Trade Representative’s (USTR) office over its protection of intellectual property rights (IPR), preference for domestic producers and non-trade barriers. Ahead of a general election, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government does not want to be seen as bowing to U.S. pressure, amid lingering tension over the recent arrest and strip search of a female diplomat in New York suspected of visa fraud. On Wednesday, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) - which represents about 50 U.S. business groups - asked the USTR to designate India a Priority Foreign Country in its 2014 report. “This designation appropriately would rank India among the very worst violators of intellectual property rights and establish a process leading to concrete solutions,”

NAM said in a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman. The USTR is holding public hearings for its annual report due in April. The report will provide details on nations denying protection of IP rights or fair market access to U.S. firms. India is widely perceived in Washington as a serial trade offender, with U.S. firms unhappy about imports of everything from shrimp to steel pipes they say threaten jobs, as well as a lack of fair access to the Indian market for its goods.

WTO Cases This month, Washington said it was filing its second case at the WTO over domestic content requirements in India’s solar programme, which aims to ease energy shortages in Asia’s third-largest economy. There are 14 past or current WTO cases between India and the United States, whose bilateral trade in goods measured $63.7 billion last year, not including the latest case. India has since hardened its stance, instructing officials not

to entertain any request from the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) - a quasi-judicial federal agency - to examine its trade practices. India’s trade ministry has also “advised” U.S Deputy Trade Representative Wendy Cutler to put off a visit to India that had been scheduled for late March due to the parliamentary election due in April or May, a senior official told Reuters. The official said India had asked for alternative dates for the visit, possibly after the elections, adding that the decision was not linked with the trade tension. WORST OFFENDERS The USTR listed in a February 12 report markets in Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad as being among the worst offenders globally for the sale of pirated software and counterfeit goods. A visit by the USITC delegation to meet officials from the Indian commerce, industry, health, telecom and finance ministries has also been put on hold. A USITC spokeswoman confirmed the delay, saying they were looking for “other windows” for a visit, but declined to comment on

the reasons for the delay. Newly appointed Trade Secretary Rajeev Kher, who pushed India’s stand on food security issues at a WTO meeting in Bali, as chief WTO negotiator, has told his officials to tackle bilateral trade disputes preferably through multi-lateral forums. India has also urged President Barack Obama’s administration not to fall prey to special interest groups and consider trade issues in the context of the wider economic and strategic relationship between the two countries. Officials say any move towards putting India on a priority foreign countries list would hurt bilateral relations. “There are clear stresses in the India-US trade, economic relations,” said another government official who, like others who spoke to Reuters, declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. “If it is a strategic relationship, they should be looking at the larger picture.” (Additional reporting by Krista Hughes in Washington, Frank Jack Daniel in New Delhi; Editing by Douglas Busvine and Robert Birsel) March 2014

MALAYSIAN F370

Missing Malaysia plane T

he most dangerous parts of a flight are takeoff and landing. Rarely do incidents happen when a plane is cruising seven miles above the earth. So the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet well into its flight Saturday morning over the South China Sea has led aviation experts to assume that whatever happened was quick and left the pilots no time to place a distress call. It could take investigators months, if not years, to determine what happened to the Boeing 777 flying from Malaysia’s largest city of Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. “At this early stage, we’re focusing on the facts that we don’t know,” said Todd Curtis, a former safety engineer with Boeing who worked on its 777 wide-body jets and is now director of the Airsafe.com Foundation. Military radar indicates that the missing Boeing 777 jet may have turned back before vanishing, Malaysia’s air force chief said Sunday as authorities were investigating up to four passengers with suspicious identifications. The revelations add to the mystery surrounding the final minutes of the flight. Air force chief Rodzali Daud didn’t say which direction the plane veered when it apparently went off course, or how long it flew in that direction, Some of the information it had was also corroborated by civilian radar, he said. If the information about the U-turn is accurate, that lessens the probability that the plane suffered a catastrophic explosion but raises further questions about why

74

the pilots didn’t signal for help. If there was a minor mechanical failure - or even something more serious like the shutdown of both of the plane’s engines - the pilots likely would have had time to radio for help. The lack of a call “suggests something very sudden and very violent happened,” said William Waldock, who teaches accident investigation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz. It’s possible that there was either an abrupt breakup of the plane or something that led it into a quick, steep dive. Some experts even suggested an act of terrorism or a pilot purposely crashing the jet. “Either you had a catastrophic event that tore the airplane apart, or you had a criminal act,” said Scott Hamilton, managing director of aviation consultancy Leeham Co. “It was so quick and they didn’t radio.” No matter how unlikely a scenario, it’s too early to rule out any possibilities, experts warn. The best clues will come with the recovery of the flight data and voice recorders and an examination of the wreckage. U.S. investigators from the FBI, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration and experts from Boeing are heading to Asia to assist in the investigation. Airplane crashes typically occur during takeoff and the climb away from an airport, or while coming in for a landing, as in last year’s fatal crash of an Asiana Airlines jet in San Francisco. Just 9 percent of fatal accidents happen when a plane is at cruising

Dissapeared after takeoff

altitude, according to a statistical summary of commercial jet airplane accidents done by Boeing. Capt. John M. Cox, who spent 25 years flying for US Airways and is now CEO of Safety Operating Systems, said that whatever happened to the Malaysia Airlines jet, it occurred quickly. The problem had to be big enough, he said, to stop the plane’s transponder from broadcasting its location, although the transponder can be purposely shut off from the cockpit. One of the first indicators of what happened will be the size of the debris field. If it is large and spread out over tens of miles, then the plane likely broke apart at a high elevation. That could signal a bomb or a massive airframe failure. If it is a smaller field, the plane probably fell from 35,000 feet intact, breaking up upon contact with the water. “We know the airplane is down. Beyond that, we don’t know a whole lot,” Cox said. The Boeing 777 has one of the best safety records in aviation history. It first carried passengers in June 1995 and went 18 years without a fatal accident. That streak came to an end with the July 2013 Asiana crash. Three of the 307 people aboard that flight died. Saturday’s Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 239 passengers and crew would only be the second fatal incident for the aircraft type. “It’s one of the most reliable airplanes ever built,” said John Goglia, a former member of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

01 STRUCTURAL FAILURE

02 PILOT DISORIENTATION

Most aircraft are made of aluminum which is susceptible to corrosion over time, especially in areas of high humidity. But given the plane’s long history and impressive safety record, experts suggest that a failure of the airframe, or the plane’s Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines, is unlikely.

Curtis said that the pilots could have taken the plane off autopilot and somehow went off course and didn’t realize it until it was too late. The plane could have flown for another five or six hours from its point of last contact, putting it up to 3,000 miles away. This is unlikely given that the plane probably would have been picked up by radar somewhere. But it’s too early to eliminate it as a possibility.

04 ACCIDENTAL SHOOT-DOWN There have been incidents when a country’s military unintentionally shot down civilian aircraft. In July 1988, the United States Navy missile cruiser USS Vincennes accidently shot down an Iran Air flight, killing all 290 passengers and crew. In September 1983, a Korean Air Lines flight was shot down by a Russian fighter jet.

A traditional hijacking seems unlikely given that a plane’s captors typically land at an airport and have some type of demand. But a 9/11-like hijacking is possible, with terrorists forcing the plane into the ocean

In January 2008, a British Airways 777 crashed about 1,000 feet short of the runway at London’s Heathrow Airport. As the plane was coming in to land, the engines lost thrust because of ice buildup in the fuel system. There were no fatalities.

What could have

happened?

05 BAD WEATHER In the case of Saturday’s Malaysia Airlines flight, all indications show that there were clear skies.

07 PILOT SUICIDE 06 HIJACKING

03 FAILURE OF BOTH ENGINES

There were two large jet crashes in the late 1990s - a SilkAir flight and an EgyptAir flightthat are believed to have been caused by pilots deliberately crashing the planes. Government crash investigators never formally declared the crashes suicides but both are widely acknowledged by crash experts to have been caused by deliberate pilot actions.

08 A BOMB Several planes have been brought down including Pan Am Flight 103 between London and New York in December 1988. There was also an Air India flight in June 1985 between Montreal and London and a plane in September 1989 flown by French airline Union des Transports Aériens which blew up over the Sahara. Toronto wins first North American Cricket Championship (NACC)

T

he North American Cricket Championship (NACC) was contested In Phoenix, Arizona, over the weekend between the Midwest Cricket Conference and the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club. Toronto swept the series despite a determined effort by MCC, who are the reigning ACF champions. The tournament was hosted by Arizona Cricket Association, which is led by President Rod Gohil, and received praise from participants.

winning the toss and lived up to the promise by making 259-9 in its 40 overs. Abhijit Joshi top-scored with 66, including six boundaries, while Ashhar Mehdi chipped in with 37 and Mannan Patel added 29. Toronto once again impressed, this time with a century opening wicket partnership between skipper Shaheed Keshvani (48) and Rustam Bhatti (80). That was followed by a blistering 50-ball 73 by Raza Ur Rehman. Arsalan

Afterwards, Toronto received its wellearned reward as captain Keshvani accepted the NACC Cup, and the squad erupted into a wild, champagnesoaked celebration. Ur Rehman was presented with a Hammer Cricket bat as the NACC’s top run scorer, and both captains were given autographed copies of the recently published ‘Flannels on the Sward,’ a history of cricket in the Americas penned by author Jayesh Patel.

In the first 40-over match, Toronto won the toss and sent Midwest in to bat. The track favored spin and, as expected, MCC was spun out for 110 in the 29th over. Toronto was wobbly in its chase as wickets fell in quick succession. But from 47 for 5 in the 10th over, Toronto staged a recovery thanks to opener Ali Nabeel (46) and teammate Hassan Choghtai (18). In the end, it was their unbeaten 64-run partnership, which assured their side a five-wicket victory. Naeem Hasham and Ragunath Soogoor each took three wickets in the Canadian victory, while Raza Ur Rehman contributed two. For Midwest, N. Bakshi took three wickets. On day two, the wicket had much more in it for the batsmen. Midwest opted to bat first after

Rehman, who finished on an unbeaten 116, the NACC’s only century. Soogoor chipped in with a handy half-century himself, as Toronto built a splendid innings of 243-7, despite the solid performance of Donieke Perrin, who nabbed four Canadian wickets. In their chase, Midwest batted determinedly, but found itself no match for the inspired Toronto bowling attack, finishing at 168 in the 36th over.

Qadir nabbed two wickets in Toronto’s cupclinching win, while Midwest’s Mannan Patel also had two scalps. The Americans looked to avoid a whitewash in the third game while Canadians set out to prove their dominance. Batting first, Toronto quickly found itself in trouble, being reduced to 61-5 in the 14th over, but they battled back largely on the shoulders of Ur

“I would like to thank the American Cricket Federation and the Arizona Cricket Association, in particular Mike Thomas and Rod Gohil,” said Keshvani. “We played the tournament like gentlemen and would like to thank the Midwest team for doing the same. Cricket in America is extremely lucky to have the ACF, and we wish you all the success in the future.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Water, taken in moderation , cannot hurt anybody.

Six Free Doctors for a Healthy Lifestyle Ever heard of “six free doctors,” whose advice is crucial to a healthy lifestyle? We do not pay any heed to them as there are no visiting fees, so we don’t realize their importance!

01 Sunlight

The sun says, “Spend a little time with me while reading, exercising, listening to music, meditating, even chatting up with friends — do it with me! Just you and me because I am your best friend.” Physically and metaphorically, sunlight is beneficial to all, regardless of caste or creed.

02

WATER

Six to eight glasses of water a day replenishes all the liquids of the body. And H2O is oxygen to every cell in the body. Our bodies thrive on fresh water. It is the greatest detoxifying agent ever produced. And it is free!

Air

03 Your “prana shakti” — life breath! Just being aware of your

breathing for a little while invigorates every cell in the body.

“Pranayam” (deep breathing) is a must to exhale carbon and take in all the oxygen in a clean and open environment. It is a luxury today to breathe fresh air. Do not neglect this. Holding one’s breath and then releasing it clears all the diseases in the body.

04

REST Last but not the least, the sixth doctor is rest. None of the above is possible without enough sleep, relaxation and rest from meeting a deadline. Rest is the most important factor which gives impetus to all the other five, so do not neglect it.

06

Resting with beautiful, positive and creative thoughts is, of course, always recommended. If you have negative thoughts, keep slogging so that you do not have the time to nurture them. When resting, have positive thoughts, nourishing thoughts, the foremost being gratitude to the Almighty, followed by love and compassion towards all the relationships you encounter — choicelessness in love. You are love incarnate. You cannot help but love. There are no likes or dislikes in love. “Samta Bhav” — equilibrium, equanimity, equipoise!

05 DIET

After consuming three of nature’s five elements (ether, water, air, earth and fire), next comes nature’s produce — fruits and vegetables. It is not necessary to be vegan, but the amount of cleansing fruits and vegetables provide to the system is amazing! The enzymes produced protect every cell in the body. Proteins are present in lentils and yogurt, too. Eating too much meat takes up 70 percent of the body’s energy to digest it, so be moderate. We are basically herbivores and not carnivorous by nature. Which Yoga Style is Right for You?

I

f you’ve never tried yoga (what are you doing here?), odds are that you will at some point. But whether or not you’ll keep at it after the first couple of sessions depends a lot on whether you’ve stumbled into the ‘right’ class. For any other health or fitness activity, things are usually pretty simple: you can basically walk into any gym and be confident that there will be a treadmill and some weight training equipment – by and large a gym is a gym. But yoga is not like that. Yogis (and yoginis) are very particular about the kind of yoga they enjoy – not just any will do. It’s not surprising, considering what differences there are not only between all the different yoga styles, but the levels, the instructors, the facilities, the amount of chanting, music… you get the idea. You wouldn’t go to a cinema and blindly buy a ticket to watch any movie, would you? Probably not. Yoga can look and feel very different, depending on what style of yoga we’re talking about. A lot of new and interesting yoga styles have popped up just in the last few years! And you, the yoga community, are a highly diverse crowd, with a broad range of interests, likes and dislikes, goals and priorities. So, the word ‘yoga’ can mean totally different things to different people. For some, it can mean grueling, sweaty contortions in sauna-like temperatures, to others yoga suggests quietly sitting cross-legged in front of a candle for an hour. The practice of yoga, in whatever shape or form, is a wonderful thing, and it brings with it tons of benefits for the body and mind. If you’re new to yoga, you should definitely try it out, find your style, and then practice it regularly. But, with so many different yoga variants out there, it’s important to find a style that you are comfortable with and one that suits you. Although the flow chart at the top of this article is to be taken less than seriously, it actually does suggest some yoga styles that you might find fun, if you follow the chart faithfully (go on, give it a try). In the following, I’ll try to provide some descriptions of some more common yoga styles. Note that there are many, many more, and also remember that I’m no expert. Please don’t get upset if I’ve left out your favorite yoga style, or written something that’s not right (but say something in the comments). Here then are some yoga styles to consider:

What about you? What’s your yoga style? How did you end up finding it? March 2014

HOROSCOPE

ARIES 21 March - 20 April

AJAY DEVGAN April 2, 1969

The early part of March comes in softly. Mercury had been retrograde in February, so you will have time to get organized and begin making decisions again. Even so, I would like you to take a slow, watch-and-wait approach. April is due to be a very difficult month, for two angry eclipses are coming by, April 15 and 29. Until those eclipses have spoken, you won’t quite know where you stand or which way events are going. You will be focused mainly on a relationship, in love or business, or else you will have to tend to your health.

LIBRA 23 September - 23 October

AMITABHBACHCHAN Oct 11, 1942

SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November

TAURUS 21 April - 21 May

ANUSHKA SHARMA May 1, 1988

You had a lot going on in your career in February, and you were concentrating hard on all you had to do, but March promises to brim with social activity and be lots more fun. The Sun and Neptune are standing ready to welcome the new moon on February 28/March 1 (depending on time zone), 11 degrees Pisces, in your eleventh house of hopes and wishes, friends, and social events, so you have lots of enjoyable events shaping up that you will want to attend.

MALLIKA SHERAWAT Oct 24, 1981

This will be a big month for career progress, dear Gemini. Last month you were plagued with delays, because the planet that is in charge of your welfare, Mercury, was going retrograde. Say goodbye to those frustrations - Mercury went direct on February 28, so you can sign contracts again, and resume shopping, especially for electronic items. If you can wait a little longer to sign papers, until later this month, that would be an even better idea, for Mercury will be moving at a faster clip after March 20.

SALMAN KHAN Dec 27, 1965

Most of March will be bright and happy for you. The Sun is now in Pisces, a fellow water sign like yours, so you are truly in your element. Best of all, the new moon of February 28/ March 1 (depending on your time zone) is in Pisces, 11 degrees, that will fall in your broadening, adventurous ninth house of foreign travel, higher learning, philosophy, religion, legal matters, publishing, and broadcasting.

LEO 23 July - 23 August

SUNIL SHETTY Aug 11, 1961

March will bring your attention to money, but this time, instead of the topic being stressful for you, the news seems to be very upbeat. An unusually sweet new moon that arrived February 28 (or soon will on March 1, depending on your particular time zone) will energize your eighth house of other people’s money. No matter what, it seems you will be pleased with the flow of events. This new moon will be in Pisces, 11 degrees, and imaginative Neptune will be conjunct this new moon.

VIRGO 24 August - 22 September

AKSHAY KUMAR Sep 9, 1967

You tend to work hard, Virgo, but this month may prove to you that you need not do everything yourself. March will underscore the value of teamwork, cooperation, and partnership. March may also show you that romance can take on grand proportions if you are in love by talking about and making plans for the future. You may not have been ready before this, but now the timing seems right. If you are already married, it’s time to make more of your union by finding exciting new goals to draw up and as your life unfolds, you will see those goals met.

Bollywood Showtime

March will be the ideal month to tackle all your homerelated plans. If you were thinking of moving, start looking for a new space the moment March arrives. The new moon appeared on February 28 at one minute to midnight on the United States West Coast, and on March 1 for most others in different time zones. That means this month will start off with lots of fresh energy and will provide you with opportunities, many of them perfect to solve your home-related dilemma.

CANCER 22 June - 22 July

KATRINA KAIF Jul 16, 1984

You have just come to the most romantic moment of 2014, dear Scorpio. At the very start of the month, you have one of the most lyrical, graceful, and affectionate new moons of the year that will encourage you to find true love or to nurture and celebrate the love you have found. That new moon either came February 28, or will on March 1 (depending on your time zone), and will be your very best friend.

SAGITARIUS 23 November - 23 December

GEMINI 22 May - 21 June

SONAKSHI SINHA June 2, 1987

This is a good month to be productive. Mercury is no longer retrograde as of February 28, so you won’t experience the cancellations, postponements, mix-ups, confusion, indecisiveness, and forgetfulness that you did in yourself and others in February. The first part of March should be quite special, and you will feel very accomplished if you stick to your plan. Let’s look at the month in detail.

HRITHIK ROSHAN Jan 10, 1974

24 December - 20 January This is the month you can break free from routine and enjoy delicious travel, dear Capricorn. The month starts with a new moon in Pisces, at 11 degrees on March 1 (or February 28 depending on your time zone), lighting your house of short distance travel, and exerting a strong influence in the first ten days, from March 1 to approximately March 10. This new moon is sweet in every way, and it will give you an opportunity to plan a romantic trip with your one-and-only to a beautiful spot near water.

ACQUARIUS 21 January - 18 February

Abhishek Bachchan Feb 5 1976

You may like March very much, for you will see a big emphasis on money but instead of getting you tense, you’ll be surprised and happy at how easily it may be for you to raise your income. This lovely trend will start with the new moon, March 1 (or on February 28 if you live on the West Coast of the US). That new moon is to light your second house of earned income, and it will receive sensational aspects from both Neptune and Jupiter, two heavy-duty planets that have a lot of influence in our solar system’s lineup.

PISCES 19 February - 20 March

It’s birthday time, and Neptune, your governing planet, and Jupiter, giver of gifts and luck, are coming to give you their warmest greetings. This will be a vital month for you, for these two planets will support the new moon in Pisces, 10 degrees, due February 28 / March 1 (depending on your time zone). This new moon will be a wonderful game changer, for it will help you in so many wonderful ways.

Your Guide to the Nitty-Gritty of the Bitcoin World The widespread use of cold, hard cash has been on the decline for years as credit cards have experienced an uptick in popularity. Now, cash faces another formidable challenge from Bitcoin. This digital currency exists only online and has grown from obscurity to popularity since its introduction in 2009. If the idea of this kind of payment is new to you, keep reading for background, an explanation of how it works, and why its value is on the rise.

In the Beginning Bitcoin began operating in 2009, and was created by a group of mathematicians. However, the idea of currency based on cryptography

90

goes back to mailing list discussions in the late ’90s. The group of people who took the concept and developed Bitcoin includes Satoshi Nakamoto (widely regarded to be a pseudonym), Gavin Andresen, and Pieter Wuille, among others.

How it Works This online currency gets handed out initially as a reward for successful mining. The process of mining involves a decentralized network of computers competing to solve cryptographic puzzles. These highly sophisticated puzzles support the functionality of a mechanism that’s known as the block chain, a public ledger of all bitcoin transactions. The owners of computers that are first to solve

the puzzles receive new bitcoins. To protect the identity of those who acquire, trade, and spend bitcoins, users interact with each other behind the anonymity of digital signatures that match an address for an account. Wallets, which are smartphone apps and software, make it easy for users to assess their bitcoin accounts, as well as spend and receive the currency.

PROS/CONS Bitcoins protect your identity and money very low cost never have to pay a foreign transaction or exchange fee

Why it Works Perhaps you’re skeptical, and may wonder if the types of scams that target online transactions includes digital currency. There are mechanisms in place to prevent fraud and abuse of the bitcoin currency system.

transactions are irreversible volatility

Individuals and businesses commit computer resources to processing the puzzles that are the backbone of the public ledger. The integrity of the ledger is important because it tracks every single transaction involving bitcoins. The ledger is designed to be unchangeable once a transaction gets recorded. All computers in the Bitcoin network agree on the same version of the ledger, and the integrity of the ledger brings confidence to this currency system. Each of these transactions is called a

“You can’t stop things like Bitcoin. It will be everywhere and the world will have to readjust. World governments will have to readjust” - John McAfee, Founder of McAfee block. These blocks make up the ledger, which is why it’s called the block chain. It’s a complete chronological history (chain of events, if you will) of every instance where bitcoins have changed hands. Remember the concept of mining? That’s where computers compete to solve a puzzle first in exchange for bitcoins. Essentially, computers are trying to be first to finish a block, i.e. process a transaction. These puzzles that computers must solve to complete a block are math problems that computers answer only by trial and error. Miners run software programs that create, test, and recreate possible answers constantly and quickly. Running this software is resource intensive, meaning it requires a lot of a computer’s resources. At this time, each correct answer merits 25 bitcoins. Every four years, the bitcoin reward gets cut in half. This reduction in reward is set to continue until there are 21 million bitcoins in circulation.

Bitcoins in the Real World In terms of U.S. dollars, bitcoins have seen increases in value in 2013. That increase happened despite a high-profile take-down of the Silk Road website in October. U.S. officials allege this site was an online market for illegal drugs, and bitcoins was the currency of choice. The Silk Road scandal prompted Congress to hold hearings on bitcoin and the future of digital currency. The chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, has said the Fed monitors virtual currencies but does not seem to have regulatory authority over these systems. As Bitcoin gains more worldwide media attention, its value is expected to continue to increase. Types of scams involving bitcoins are on the rise as well, which is why it’s more important now than ever to protect yourself from identity theft. In the meantime, it’s getting more difficult for small-time miners to “win” bitcoins. For that reason, more individuals are pooling their resources to increase their capacity to mine by getting high-end hardware and faster internet connections. They’re then splitting the rewards as though they were running a joint business venture. The world is watching as this high-profile digital currency moves forward.

SXSW 2014: Austin,TX Top Apps and Gadgets

A full gamut of exciting tech was on display at this year’s South By Southwest (SXSW) festival, from an iPhone case that can measure your heart rate to an Oculus Rift game that lets you sock a (virtual) shark right in the face. Hundreds of exhibitors took to the event, held annually in Austin, Texas, to show off some hotly anticipated apps, games and gadgets to the roughly 70,000 attendees. Here are our top picks for the very best the show had to offer.

1

Wello There are plenty of fitness bands that sync with your smartphone, but Wello cuts out the middleman by tracking your vital signs from the surface of a phone case. Simply press your fingers against Wello for about 20 seconds, and you’ll get a detailed report of your heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen and body temperature via the free Wello app. The iPhone case even ships with a special attachment for measuring your lung capacity.

FaceShift Avatar Creator

PPLConnect

FaceShift is an animation tool that makes 3D avatars out of the most accessible hardware around: your face. Combined with a depth camera like the one on Microsoft’s Kinect, this $1,500 studio software can make a 3D image of your face after about 15 minutes of capturing facial gestures, allowing you to digitize your mug without any fancy markers. You can then turn yourself into fun characters, like a menacing ogre and muchless-menacing puppy.

Wouldn’t it be nice to answer your smartphone’s texts right from your desktop while at work? That’s precisely what PPLConnect allows you to do. Currently in beta on Google Play, this app turns your smartphone into a cloud-based system that can be used anywhere, whether you want to make a phone call from your tablet or answer an important text when your cellphone isn’t nearby.

Shark Punch

Virtuix Omni

Contour RollerMouse

The name says it all. “Shark Punch” is a proof-of-concept game that combines the Oculus Rift virtual-reality headset and the Leap Motion controller to, well, let you punch sharks in the face. Even if “Shark Punch” never sees a commercial release, the game does an excellent job of demonstrating the type of immersion that can be achieved with Oculus Rift’s virtual-reality headset and Leap Motion’s movement tracking

Want to feel like you’re truly living inside your favorite first-person shooter? If you have the right hardware and $499 to spare, you can make it happen with Virtuix’s Omni interface. Omni is a walking platform that translates your actual footsteps into in-game movement for PC titles, so you can feel the physical sensation of running down a corridor while blasting away baddies.

It looks nothing like a mouse, but it works quite well as one. Contour’s RollerMouse is a long plastic bar with a movable rubber center that you use to navigate around the screen. This productivity-minded reinvention of the mouse sports six buttons, allowing you to perform functions like copying and pasting without the need for shortcuts. The accessory is designed to let you scroll across three full displays in less than a second, so power users should take note.
