f you have just arrived in the Wimberley Valley and want to make the most of your visit, then a trip to the Visitors Bureau is in order. Cathy Moreman and John Palumbo are co-directors of the Wimberley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, along with a dedicated staff of volunteers, stand ready to make your visit to Wimberley one you will treasure for the rest of your life. The Visitors Bureau is the perfect place to discover the lay of the land. It offers printed materials to help guide visitors to the unique locations found in and around Wimberley. From shopping venues to some of the finest restaurants found anywhere, it can guide even the most discriminating pallet in the right direction. “We stand ready to welcome and assist all visitors and newcomers to our community,” Moreman said. “Our amazing staff of volunteers are extremely knowledgeable and can answer any question about our wonderful valley.” Wimberley is full of unique shops that offer traditional and notso-traditional art and wares. Although the primary shopping areas are clustered around the “Square” and “Olde Towne Plaza”, there are also shops sprinkled throughout other areas. The building that houses the Visitors Bureau has recently undergone renovations, thanks to Mike and Patti Morgan, and now reflects the Wimberley Valley in a very important way — by featuring works by some of the community’s best known artists. “The valley is home to some of the most gifted artists anywhere,” Moreman said. “Not only are we displaying these works of art, they are also available for purchase.” While the Visitors Bureau offers the keys to the facets of the valley, the chamber’s overall mission is to assist its business members, as well as residents and visitors alike to find specific information that can best assist their specific needs. “There are always events happening that folks need to know about,” Palumbo said. “It is truly a wonderful place to live or visit.” The Visitors Bureau is centrally located at 14100 Ranch Road 12 next door to Brookshire Brothers’ Grocery Store and is open MondaySaturday from 9 a.m-4 p.m., and on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. For more information about the Visitor’s Center and Chamber of Commerce, surf its website at www.wimberley.org or call (512) 847-2201.

hen Henry David Thoreau declared that “we need the tonic of wildness” in reference to Walden’s Pond, he could have just as easily been speaking of Wimberley’s Cypress Creek Nature Trail.

Charles McClure i Spring-Summer Guide to Wimberley

Get away from it all with a walk on the Cypress Creek Nature Trail. Its entrance is located on the Wimberley Square. Trails lead along picturesque Cypress Creek and join up with Blue Hole Regional Park.

“It is an escape,” says Wimberley City Administrator Don Ferguson.” It is a very unique place where you can forget the worries of this world — the pressures of life. You have the creek on one side of you and the unspoiled fauna of the area on the other.” Located just off the Wimberley

Square on Old Kyle Road, the trail is accessible for any visitor to the downtown business district and includes picnic tables, a public restroom and playscape where tourists can take a break from shopping. The trail was preserved by the City of Wimberley with the help of private donations from citi-

zens, civic groups and a grant from the Texas Department of Wildlife. It is a popular destination for bird watchers who keep an eagle eye out for owls, hawks and purple martins when in season. The trail plays a critical role in preserving some of the most ecologically sensitive watershed in the Lone Star State.

imberley has long been both a refuge, as well as a melting pot for Hill Country musicians. The community has served as an incubator for up and coming artists like Grammy nominee Sarah Jarosz, who was mentored by local bluegrass musicians. It is home to original outlaws like Ray Wylie Hubbard. So it only stands to reason that live music is an essential way of life in the Wimberley Valley. While live music echoes across the hills, Cypress Creek Cafe [CCC] stands as a dedicated bastion to live music. Three nights a week — Thursday, Friday and Saturday — rain or shine — CCC offers the superior live music that will rival anything found in Austin. The first Thursday of the month is reserved for local musicians during CCC’s “open mic” night. Owners Randy and Trish Uselton, along with booking agent Temple Ray, keep CCC’s “Buzzard Bar” rocking with the best talent found in Central Texas. “Some musicians — the Bobby Mac’s and the W.C. Clark’s — have been playing here for years,” Ray explains. “But we try to get everything from every scope of music. We have country acts and rock bands. We have alternative and Americana. We have jazzy stuff from time to time and even great soul bands.” Live music at CCC has been a tradition dating back more than a

quarter century. Folks in the Texas Hill Country take their live music seriously. “There’s something in the water,” Ray says with a sly grin. “We have a lot of musicians who live in this area,” Trish adds. “There are even more people who love live music.”

CCC’s Buzzard Bar does a brisk business. While many patrons love to dance, others like sitting on the back porch enjoying the restaurant’s celebrated cuisine with the tunes piped in on state of the art speakers. Flat screen TVs broadcast sporting events overhead. Best of all, there is never a cover charge at CCC. The venue also has an outdoor stage facility and hosts numerous events like the Crawfish Boil, slated for Saturday, May 17, benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. The fun starts at noon. There is more live music found across the street at Ino’z Brew and Chew during the warm weather months on the restaurant’s outdoor stage. Again, expect great live bands spanning a myriad of musical disciplines. Live music is also always featured at every Market Day, held the first Saturday each month at Lions Field on FM 2325 [see related article, page 10].

eople love Wimberley Market Day. In 1964, a group of local Lions banded together to hold an outdoor market, selling all kinds of goods — and that included pigs, goats and chickens back in the days when Wimberley was an agricultural community. Originally conducted on the town square, the event quickly gained popularity. While the livestock is long gone, today it is the oldest and largest outdoor market in the Texas Hill Country held the first Saturday of each month, March through December from 7 a.m.-4 p.m.

It is a potpourri of goods featured in 475 booths. Tree-shaded paths line the easy walkways and live music floats through the air. Concession stands offer a variety of foods for breakfast and lunch. Admission is always free and parking is a bargain at $5. Ironically, this current president of the Wimberley Lions is a living homonym — local

pharmacist John Lyon. “I guess it’s true, I was a Lyon my entire life,” Lyon deadpans. “But in all seriousness, Market Day is truly a Wimberley institution. The booths are all different. I have seen some outdoor markets were everything is the same. That’s not the case here. Each booth is individually made and one is typically a polar opposite from the other. That is true of the merchandise they offer as well. “And there are so many offerings,” Lyons continues. “There is everything from furniture to Christmas ornaments, it is wide open. But I think the main attraction is that it really is a lot of

fun for our patrons.” True, but it is a lot of work for local Lions. Members are expected to volunteer their time to help make the event successful. It is, by any estimation, a huge task. “This is a working club,” Lyon admits. “There are some people who work these like a full time job. We have to order and cook food, there is maintenance of the grounds, which is an ongoing process. There is a lot of work that goes on there that people don’t know about. But we are working hard for good reasons.” Indeed. The funds raised by local Lions have had a wide and

deep impact on the Wimberley Valley. Without the hard work of local Lions and the subsequent donations facilitated in part by the funds raised through Market Day, Wimberley was able to secure the Cypress Creek Nature Trail and Blue Hole Regional Park. And there are a host of local non-profit organizations, as well as graduating seniors, that benefit from the generosity of local Lions, as well as the patronage of Market Day shoppers. “During our last meeting, we allocated about $116,000 for donations,” Lyon observes. “Suffice it to say the kids who are graduating in this town do

fairly well thanks to the work of the Wimberley Lions Club.” Market Day is also an economic shot-in-the-arm for local businesses and restaurants. “I think the restaurants do extremely well on Market Day,” Lyon says. “And I think our local businesses appreciate the influx of visitors. Wimberley is a destination for a lot of day tripping tourists.” There is plenty of good food to be had for shoppers. Barbecue brisket, hot dogs, sausage wraps, hamburgers and fried chicken are available to please the pallet. For full information, visit www.shopmarketdays.com.

Shopping is cool, eclectic

T

he shopping in Wimberley is quaint and unique.

It has an architectural flair that is funky and eclectic. The offerings from the shops are wide and varied. You can find just about anything else your heart desires. Yet it is the care and love that local business owners put into their endeavors that truly sets Wimberley apart. “As a small community Wimberley is proud and fortunate to have a shopping district which is home to a diverse selection of locally owned shops, galleries and restaurants,” said Robin McCullough, president of the Wimberley Merchants Association [WMA]. “With mer-

chandise ranging from the fanciful to the fine, local residents and visitors alike may explore a wide offering of original art, home essentials, furniture, antiques,

clothing, jewelry gift items and more.” And there’s plenty of good food from Italian, barbecue and all points in between.

“Culinary treats from home style cooking to the gourmet are available to fortify and delight,” McCullough noted. As President of the WMA, I am proud to represent such a fun and diverse group of merchant owners.” It is also easier — and safer — to peruse these days. The square now features turn lanes on Ranch Road 12 and realigned intersections, along with sidewalks, improved parking, traffic islands, landscaping and the decorative wall. A new portable restroom facility, complete with air conditioning and heating, is also available to visitors. Visit the WMA website at www.wimberleymerchants.com or the Wimberley Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau at www.wimberley.org for more information, as well as links to area businesses and restaurants.

ake a trip you will never forget to Jacob’s Well Natural Area. The artesian spring is the headwaters to Cypress Creek, which feeds Blue Hole. “It’s a great way to spend a day,” says Brooke Leftwich, Natural Resources Manager for Hays County, which manages the park. “We have hiking trails and a nature center available.” Jacob’s Well is truly a labor of love. Years ago, citizen groups began to spring up in an effort to protect the sight as development began to surface in the area. Environmental groups became concerned that the amazing natural resource that was literally the very spring that gives life to Cypress Creek could be endangered by urban sprawl. While it took more than a decade, the community, as well as the sur14 Page • Spring & Summer Guide to Wimberley

rounding area, was educated on the importance of Jacob’s Well and what it truly meant to the overall ecological health of the Wimberley Valley. An effort gave way to a movement, and the movement spawned action. In time, Hays County, with the backing of voters, purchased Jacob’s Well, along with surrounding properties, converting the area into a preserve. Now, a reclamation process is underway that will return areas that once had structural alterations back to its original state. That takes time. An old trailer park is slowly being erased. What was once a clubhouse for a condominium development is disappearing. The park now encompasses 88 acres. The vast majority of it is actually in its natural state. Still, there is some work left to be done. “So far, we have removed old tennis courts, condos, an old swimming pool, even a clubhouse,” Leftwich says. That means there are the outlines of some old buildings that still exist and crews are still removing some minor pre-existing construction. But as fast as anyone makes their way to the well itself, they quickly realize that this is a battle that is not only worth waging, but will now be won, thanks to the efforts of

Today, EmilyAnn stands as a testament to life and a celebration of all things artistic. It is a Wimberley treasure that all who visit the val-

It is a place that is full of life and beauty, even if you are only visiting to walk along its winding trails that are flanked by tranquil sculptured gardens, that should not be missed. EmilyAnn has a busy calendar. On April 26, the 16th annual Butterfly Day returns between 10 a.m.-4p.m. The festival features the live release of 3,000 butterflies throughout the day that are raised from caterpillars by school children and local businesses. “We had to move it this year because Easter falls on our regular weekend,” Rolling says. “This year we will have a flight house which will feature 20 native Texas butterflies that can be enjoyed by those coming to the festival.” The fun starts with opening ceremonies at the Veteran’s Plaza, sitting atop Edna and surrounded by commemorative flags, that will include a Commemorative Air Force flyover (weather permitting). “From morning until afternoon, you can be entertained on the grounds of the EmilyAnn,” says Rolling. EmilyAnn is also home of an amphitheater, black box theater and the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza. The amphitheater hosts children’s shows. There is “Hansel and Gretel” Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., and a 10 a.m. performance on May 6 and 8. Also, “Goldilocks & The Three Bears” is slated Sept. 6-28 on

pring-fed waters are what makes the Wimberley Valley special, and no place embodies the magic that makes this community special quite like Blue Hole Regional Park. “It is one of the most beautiful spots in Texas,” Park Manager Lauren Shrum says. “It is a swimmer’s paradise. The park is open 8 a.m. to dusk throughout the year, only closing on Christmas day. The swimming season starts the first week in May, with swimming allowed Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Sundays, it is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. “It is cool, clear water,” Shrum says. “It is always that way because it is spring-fed. And we have these amazing rope swings. They aren’t found in other parks anymore, but they are here because it is an essential part of the tradition. There are two rope swings.” It is an easy place for families to relax. Around the swimming hole, there are picnic tables and a large lawn perfect for picnicking and sunbathing. “There are plenty of places with sun or in the shade where you can kick back,” Shrum says. “You can bring your lawn chairs out, or enjoy what is provided at the park.”

Blue Hole Regional Park is famous for its rope swings that allow children and adults alike the joy of swinging and jumping into the springfed swimming hole.

While Shrum knows that Blue Hole is among the most iconic swimming holes in Texas; however, the park is much, much more. “We have amazing trails here,” Shrum says. “We have 3.5 miles of trails. Some are made for hiking and some for biking. Those activities go on at

the park year-round.” One trail features repurposed cedar trees turned upside down for hikers to pass under. The park also features a Community Pavilion, the Johnson Family Soccer Field, the Berman Wildflower Gardens, children’s playscape, a volleyball court, Chris’s Basketball Court, a rec-

reational bathhouse, picnic and parking areas, and more. “The playscape is wonderful for families with young children,” Shrum says. “It is very popular and a great spot for children’s birthday parties.” Blue Hole Regional Park is also becoming a favorite wedding venue. It’s amphitheater is

the perfect place to tie the knot. Every Friday in April, the park also hosts a series of concerts featuring some of the best musicians in the Austin area beginning at 6 p.m. Learn more at www.friendsofbluehole.org or by visiting www.vil.wimberley.tx.us.

isiting Pioneer Town and Jack Glover’s Cowboy Museum is about as authentic an experience as you can have in our modern world. Pioneer Town is truly a Texas original. Construction on the period recreation of a western town was a labor of love for the late Raymond Czichos, who began building the monument to the past in the late 1940s behind the iconic 7A Resort Ranch. Since his passing, Pioneer Town has been lovingly preserved by his family. “It has been a part of so many people’s lives for 67 years,” Trish Czichos explains. “We have fourth generation people coming back who remember this as part of their family’s experience.” Pioneer Town is far more than mere recreation, it is historical destination that even features the Schlameus House, a period

“dog-run” log cabin dating to the 1830s. In addition to the amazing collection of buildings on site, it is also home to Jack Glover’s Cowboy Museum and Emporium,

which features what is arguably the finest collection of old west memorabilia in private hands. How good is the collection? Even Judge Roy Bean’s original “Law West of the Pecos” sign resides here. That place in West Texas is a reconstructed echo of the past. But its curator, a descendent of Will Rogers, is the central most fascinating artifact. Glover opened his first Trading Post just outside of Bowie, Texas in 1949, where he stayed until he moved his entire collection, lock, stock, and barrel to its current home. His interest in the wild frontier was partially sparked by his Cherokee roots on one side of his family, as well as an old story about a family friendship with famed train robber Sam Bass, who met his end just down the road from Austin in Round Rock in July of 1878. “I have the only known photograph of Sam Bass,” Glover proclaims. “My great uncle Bill said Sam Bass was a gentleman.” Call 512-722-3699, or e-mail the museum at cowboymusuem@earthlink.net. here’s nothing quite like a homemade pie that truly brings a person’s soul back to the essential meaning of “home.”

The Wimberley Pie Company has been keeping that memory alive for generations. Owner Neal Mallard delights residents and tourists alike with his culinary treats. His efforts have made the pie company a must stop. “I had been living on the Texas Gulf Coast and wanted to move back to the Austin area,” Mallard recalls. “I bought a copy of the Austin American-Stateman and

looked in the classified ads.” There he discovered a baking company that was for sale in some wee hamlet dubbed

“Wimberley.” Since the days of yore when the world was void and without form, Mallard has become

something of a pie wizard. Even Harry Potter himself couldn’t whip up a creation that would rival any of his custard and fruit masterpieces. “It all starts with attention to detail and great ingredients,” Mallard says. “Everything is made from scratch.” The same is true with his seasonal luncheons. On the day we visited, manicotti and chicken pot pie were on the menu, but sometimes one might find handcrafted sandwiches that can double as works of art. Yet it is the sweet pie that keeps ‘em coming by the baker’s dozens. The Wimberley Pie Company is located at 13619 Ranch Road 12. It gets hot under the Texas sun, and whether you drop into its main location beside Brookshire Brothers Grocery Store, or visit its booth at Lions Trade Day, Wimberley Shave Ice is the best way to beat the heat.

Take the heat off at Wimberley Shave Ice

T

his just in... it gets really hot in Texas and Wimberley is no exception to the rule.

The best place to beat the heat in the valley is Wimberley Shave Ice. This cool little venue is located next to Brookshire Brothers Grocery Store, just behind King Feed. It has been an institution in this neck of the woods since 1989, thanks to owner Scott Owens. “I really like being around people,” Owens said. “We make a really good product and like seeing people enjoying what we do. We’ve been seeing folks like shave ice for several generations now.” He wound up in Wimberley while a student at Texas State University. Owens discovered that shave ice was the perfect distraction under the blazing Hill Country sun. Wimberley Shave Ice is also available in “Booth 8” during Wimberley Trade Day. Now, don’t confuse shave ice with a sno cone. “The difference is good, sharp blades,” Owens says. “And you have to care enough to take it slow. You can’t push it. The ice really helps bring out the flavor.” As for flavors, there are more that 100.
