Sonterra Security Thwarts Thief During the overnight hours of 7/31/17, two unlocked vehicles parked in the driveway of residences in The Oaks at Sonterra were entered into. Items stolen included a laptop, laptop bag, glasses and a handgun. A female was apprehended by Sonterra Security who then called SAPD. The female had most of the stolen items in her possession.

The male suspect ran away but was identified by the female as her boyfriend and was later arrested by SAPD. The female was also arrested by SAPD. Sonterra Security was very instrumental in the arrest of these two individuals and did an outstanding job!

THE 4-1-1 ON THE 210 Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing Coming September 23, 2017 The new area code 726 will overlay the 210 area code region of San Antonio, Texas. This will require 10-digit dialing within the region.

You won’t have to change your present telephone number. The new 726 area code will be assigned only for new telephone numbers within this area code region. The only change will be the way you dial within the 210 area code region. Effective September 23, 2017, 10-digit dialing – area code 210 + the seven-digit telephone number will be necessary to complete all outgoing calls within your area. Special services that use three-digit numbers, such as 911 and 411, remain unchanged. Other three-digit numbers that are currently available in your community, such as 211, 311, 511, 611, 711 or 811, will not change. Start early using 10-digit dialing so it will be second nature by the time it is required on September 23, 2017. Beginning October 23, 2017, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers using the new 726 area code. All calls made within and between area codes 210 and 726 must be placed using the 10-digit telephone number (210 or 726 plus the seven-digit telephone number).

Summer is a Good Time to Prune Oaks

By David Abrego The really hot weather of July and August is a good opportunity to give our oak trees a little trim. While it’s always a good idea to paint fresh wounds with an oil or latex paint, the heat at this time of year actually helps protect against oak wilt.

The form of fungus that spreads the disease and the beetle that transports the spores of that fungus are nearly nonexistent at this time of year.

When pruning, follow these rules to ensure proper pruning and prevent oak wilt: •

Large branches (greater than 1 inch) should be undercut to minimize additional damage and help the wound heal faster. Follow the three-step cutting method.

•

To promote healthy wood and minimize damage, aim to remove dead, damaged, diseased and rubbing branches.

•

If early training has not been possible, crown reduction prevents conflicts with traffic, power lines or other structures. Never cut off more than 25 percent of a tree in a single year, and keep in mind that young trees compartmentalize, or seal against decay better than old trees. In many cases, the only alternative for a tree that has outgrown its site is to replace it with a smallergrowing variety.

•

Make sure your websites, stationery, advertising materials and checks include your area code. Since your area code remains the same, there is no need to reprint if these items already contain your area code.

•

Update all stored telephone numbers, to include the area code for services such as call forwarding, call blocking, and voicemail.

•

You may need to reprogram or upgrade equipment such as fax machines, Internet connections, or any equipment with automatic dialing features.

•

Customers who have security systems, life safety systems, or monitored medical devices need to contact their vendor to determine if reprogramming is needed for 10-digit dialing.

ONLY oaks require paint on fresh wounds. Any oil or latex based paint is appropriate. Be creative! Use different colors. Mix and match with the house.

•

Always keep yours tools sharp and clean it with some type of fungicide. I suggest Lysol, either original or lemon scent is fine.

•

Just keep in mind that if you lost the opportunity this summer, winter also affords the opportunity for more pruning. In fact, winter is the best time to prune all trees, except spring blooming trees.

Consult with a Certified or Licensed Arborist before do any major pruning. Certified arborists may be found at the International Society of Arboriculture. Licensed arborists can be located by calling the City of San Antonio Department of Development Services, City Arborist.

The only regulation about oaks is that the pruning wounds must be painted within 30 minutes. It is suggested to not prune February 1st to June 15th. So yes, prune to your hearts delight. ©Neighborhood News, Inc. PAGE 5

Drought Got You Brown?

Don’t Double Down

Let’s talk about doubling your water bill. Sound like a good idea?

For many homeowners it’s the norm to use more water on their landscapes in July and August. Although the reason seems obvious — hot and dry July and August take a visual toll on grass — that’s not why customers double their water use in the summer.

The reason for the high bill comes down to sprinkler programming: adding a second start time to the existing program so the entire system runs both morning and evening.

As long as it’s on your permitted day, this is perfectly legal.

But it has the effect of automatically doubling your water consumption, with a similar effect on your bill.

Instead of running the entire system twice, run only the zones that actually need it. Remember, some sprinklers can run 20 gallons per minute. Before you turn them up, determine which zones actually need more water.

Which are your critical zones? Hint: it’s not all of them.

Typically, it’s just the grass in full afternoon sun that’s under the most stress, especially if it’s St. Augustine. This might be a single sprinkler station; an extra 10 minutes here may solve the entire problem by targeting the extra water exactly where it’s needed.

Here’s a few places in the landscape that don’t typically need extra water, even in August: • • • • • •

Landscape beds The grass sprinklers in the shade under live oaks The garbage cans and the AC condensers The sides of the house The backyard Drip lines (Remember, drip delivers a week’s worth of water directly to the roots in a single cycle; no need to run these more than once per week.)

With the scorching heat, little to no rain and continuing decline of water levels across the Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District’s (TGR) monitoring well network, TGR declared STAGE 1 water restrictions in compliance with the District’s drought contingency plan effective Tuesday, July 18th.

According to the current US Drought Monitor, northern Bexar County is categorized as experiencing “abnormally dry” and “moderate drought” conditions. The Drought Monitor is one measure used to determine the need to move from one drought stage to another. Additionally, the District may choose to initiate drought stages corresponding with the major public water systems serving residents within the District boundaries.

Stage 1 conservation measures include: • Non-exempt users shall reduce water usage by 5% over prior year.

• Non-public swimming pools covered a minimum of 25% by evaporation screens.

• Water wasting, including washing impervious cover (ex. driveways), prohibited.

• Hand watering with hose or bucket on non-designated watering days is allowed.

• Reduce landscape watering to once per week on designated watering day which is determined by the last digit of your address: *Monday - 0,1 *Tuesday - 2,3 *Wednesday - 4,5 *Thursday - 6,7 *Friday - 8,9 “We can help slow that drop of Trinity Aquifer levels and protect the aquifer by imposing drought conservation measures, of which the main feature is limiting irrigation by sprinkler systems to one day per week based on address,” said TGR General Manager George Wissmann. “The best thing about a drought management program based on lawn irrigation is that it significantly reduces water use, but it does not reduce water availability for beneficial use.”

While one day per week sprinkling limits watering flexibility, in most cases lawn appearance and health is not greatly affected.

Most lawns prosper on once per week irrigation. The only exception would be lawns planted on less than six inches of soil. They will live with the once a week watering but do better on more frequent irrigation. In fact, even St Augustine grass will survive with once every two week irrigation. Bermuda, zoysia, and buffalo grass will turn brown with no irrigation but will quickly recover when the rains resume.

Research conducted in San Antonio in the early 2000’s showed that lawn grass can prosper with once a week irrigation. The response to the restrictions since has verified those conclusions. Every lawn is different, however, and the (Continued on page 7)

drought management rules recognize that by allowing the use of hand watering any time.

That means if you have an area that is especially prone to dry out because of a slope, sun reflection or shallow soil you can supplement the regular sprinkler irrigation with handwatering as needed.

In the short term, compliance with drought management rules will help protect aquifer levels. Supplement the once/ week rule with hand-watering as necessary. In the long term, convert high water demanding lawns to more drought tolerant ground covers, perennials, shrubs, mulch and hardscape.

Normally we recommend perennial shrubs and trees as drought tolerant, low maintenance plants rather than annuals, which as a rule use more water and are only seasonal. However, I have found these selected annuals to be as drought tolerant and carefree as most perennials and have, on occasion, returned the following year. Do you want to plant an annual in the spring, water a couple of times, and then basically forget? Of course you do!

Periwinkles Periwinkle, aka Vinca, have been a recommended annual flower for decades but has recently fallen to an air borne fungus known as aerial Phytophthora. The ‘Cora’ series is resistant to almost all fungi and is so drought tolerant that I have seen it growing in sidewalk cracks. The only way to kill it is to water it or wait for winter Zinnias There are a host of varieties derived from the hybridization of Zinnia augustifolia and Zinnia elegans , ranging in a veritable profusion of heights and in colors. In fact, one such hybrid is called ‘Profusion’. Another is ‘Dreamland’. I am not talking about those, however. The really tough, no-pest, no-water annual flower is Zinnia augustifolia var linearis. It comes a variety of colors: white, yellow, orange and gold. After establishment, water once to twice a month.

Petunias Science has dramatically improve the heat and drought tolerance of petunias. Look for V.I.P. or ‘Laura Bush’ selections.

These are the small deep purple flower mounding varieties.

Additional benefit: it’s a reseeding annual.

Moss Rose/Purslane/Portulaca Does anyone remember which is which? I don’t. Fortunately, they are all the genus Portulaca spp but some are single flowers and some are doubles. The easiest way to identify Purslane and Portulaca is by leaf length, width and thickness.

Purslane, on the left, and moss rose have thick, rounded leaves. Portulaca, on the right, has thinner, pointed leaves Both are succulents, so watering weekly is optional but recommended, but if used in a hanging basket, then bi-weekly is mandatory.

Cosmos Some folks think of cosmos as a perennial but it is actually a re-seeding annual. Cosmos sulphureus or yellow cosmos is native to Mexico and South America but is just as adaptable to South Texas. Many improved varieties to choose from but all have the same features: full sun, limited water, fertilizer discouraged, pests unknown, and blooms for an entire summer. No time, no problem with cosmos!

These annuals will help you to beautify your home, reduce your water bill, and increase your time for the really important stuff this summer – tubing on the river and watching the Astros win a pennant.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS Riding the Bus School bus transportation is safe.

In fact, buses are safer than cars!

On average, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported, about 134 people die in school-vehicle-related crashes each year. Of those, 8% are riding in the buses. Pedestrians, bicyclists and others outside the bus account for 21% of fatalities. More often than not, these deaths or injuries didn't occur in a crash, but as the pupils were entering and exiting the bus. Remember these safety tips: • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street.

• Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter.

• When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are backed away from the bus.

• Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus.

• Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it's okay to approach.

• Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!

Even if you don't ride in a motor vehicle, you still have to protect yourself. Because of minimal supervision, young pedestrians face a wide variety of decisions making situations and dangers while walking to and from school.

Here are a few basic safety tips to follow: • Mind all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard -never cross the street against a light, even if you don't see any traffic coming.

• Walk your bike through intersections.

• Walk with a buddy.

• Wear reflective material...it makes you more visible to street traffic.

Riding in a Car • You might have heard before that most traffic crashes occur close to home ... they do.

• Safety belts are the best form of protection passengers have in the event of a crash. They can lower your risk of injury by 45%.

• You are four times more likely to be seriously injured or killed if ejected from the vehicle in a crash.

• Everyone needs to be buckled up properly. That means older kids in seat belts, younger kids in booster seats and little kids in child safety seats.

NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Directorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly. If you do not see a representative listed below for your neighborhood, please consider volunteering. (A neighborhood is welcome to have two representatives and alternate attendance.)
