Building Activity in Stone Oak We are in the heat of the summer, but construction crews have been hard at work on several projects within the Stone Oak area. As a reminder, all new construction plans are required to be submitted to the Stone Oak POA Architectural Review Committee (SOARC) for review prior to building. The SOARC ensures projects are within Stone Oak Master Plan dictated guidelines and restrictions. Near the intersection of Stone Oak Parkway and Evans, you will see construction underway for a new car wash facility. In this same area, construction is moving along for a new dental office building called 7 to 7 Dental. Several new office buildings are under construction as well. One is on Stone Oak Parkway, past Canyon Ridge Elementary, closer to US281, and three more office buildings are underway on Market Ridge, behind Stone Ridge Market shopping center at Evans and US281. We are always happy when new businesses choose Stone Oak as their home. We hope you will help welcome them to the community, and patronize all our wonderful Stone Oak shops, restaurants, and other establishments.

provide direct routes to downtown, thus cutting down on some of the heavy US281 traffic. Riders will be able to ride a bus equipped with WiFi, and forego the daily stress of rush hour traffic congestion. We would like to make you aware we have been informed by the City of San Antonio and VIA that a new stoplight on Stone Oak Parkway is part of this project. It will be located at the entrance to iHeartMedia/back entrance to the Chase complex, Olive Garden, and Longhorn Steakhouse. Work is scheduled to begin in September, and be completed around Thanksgiving. In 2016, the POA worked with the City of San Antonio to replace stop signs at Arrow Hill and Stone Oak Parkway with a stoplight. Please be advised, the Stone Oak POA is in NO WAY affiliated with this new stoplight being built in conjunction with the VIA Park ‘N Ride. We absolutely had no part in its determination of placement, or its funding. If you have any questions regarding the new stoplight for the VIA project, we encourage you to contact VIA, or the City of San Antonio at 3-1-1.

Stage 1 Watering Restrictions are Back! By Donna Fossum (Editor’s Note: At deadline, we were projected to go into Stage 1 watering restrictions mid-July, therefore, we thought the following information helpful to residents.) Because the hot, dry South Texas summer weather has returned and the Edwards Aquifer level continues to drop, San Antonio has returned to Stage 1 drought restrictions.

and safety exceptions to this rule may be requested from SAWS.

4. Water waste is prohibited at all times. Allowing water to run off into a gutter, ditch or drain or failing to repair a controllable leak is considered water waste. 5. Residential car washing is allowed on Saturday or Sunday as long as there is no water waste. 6. Residential and indoor commercial fountains are permitted. Outdoor commercial fountains must have a variance in order to operate.

It’s been a while since we’ve been in Stage 1 drought restrictions so here’s a little refresher.

7. Variances will be needed for new landscape installations.

1. Landscape watering with an irrigation system, sprinkler or soaker hose is permitted only on your designated watering day before 11 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Watering days begin and end at midnight; overnight watering is not allowed.

These rules will continue until there is an announcement in the newspaper that Stage 2 or year-round rules are in effect. As always, you can visit GardenStyleSA. com for watering recommendations and other timely tips- and you can contact us for a free irrigation system consultation. You just might qualify for a cash rebate for making changes to your irrigation system by participating in our Irrigation Design Rebate!

2. Hand watering with a hose, drip irrigation, or bucket is permitted any day, at any time. 3. Washing impervious cover such as parking lots, driveways, streets or sidewalks is prohibited. Health

Summer Heat is Back

Watering Advice From The Trinity Glen Rose District Wow! It is hot. If you’ve spent just a few summers in South Texas, you knew things would heat up in July. And typically when it’s hot, it is also dry and water use can increase 50-60 percent due to landscape watering. Part of the Trinity Glen Rose District’s outreach efforts are focused on helping people maintain a great-looking landscape while reducing water use. Here are a few hints you can follow this summer to help reduce your water use. Check your Sprinkler System Homes with in-ground sprinkler systems can use about 35% more water than those without. Sprinkler heads can spray water in the street or on your driveway and waste a ton of water. You should inspect your system to ensure it is covering your landscape efficiently. Set automatic sprinkler systems to water thoroughly but infrequently. Rain sensor shut-off devices can help prevent watering in the rain. Also, make sure your sprinkler heads are producing water drops and not a fine mist. A mist will evaporate more quickly and not absorb deeply into the soil where roots can get to it. Also, water in the morning when it is cooler, and always water by hand when you can. Xeriscape! Improve your Landscape Design and Water Use Efficiency If you have a lot of turf grass in your yard, you should begin to think about xeriscaping. This is the process of choosing plants, grasses, shrubs and trees that are compatible with the weather patterns in South Texas. Xeriscaping not only cuts down on water usage, but allows you to still enjoy a beautiful, low-maintenance yard and garden. Some landscape designers show that a xeriscape requires less maintenance and up to 40-50 percent less water. The good news about xeriscaping is that you can accomplish your goals over time rather than all at once. Need Help? - Contact the Trinity Glen Rose District If you think a landscape water audit might be helpful to you, we can help. Email us at: info@TrinityGlenRose. com. Also, take a look at SAWS landscape rebate programs to help you save water and money (www. saws.org/conservation/outdoor). Stone Oak - July 2017 - Vol 22 No 7

Much Mulch is Much Better by Calvin Finch

We have had several years of above average rainfall but so far this summer it looks like we might revert to a hot dry summer. If you have gotten used to reasonable water use and want to continue the situation without major changes, here are a few tactics to consider. Use mulch in every situation where it will reduce evaporation from the soil. The soil is drying but it is still reasonably moist. Adding 2 to 6 inches of mulch to bare soil in the shrub border and in the flower and vegetable gardens will conserve the moisture in the soil to make it available to your plants rather than have it evaporate into the air. In addition to reducing evaporation, the mulch will reduce the soil temperature and reduce weed growth. A moderate soil temperature means that roots can function even close to the soil surface. The whole depth of the soil is available as a reservoir for the plant. An extra 2 inches may not mean much to plants growing in 3 feet of organic soil in Minnesota but it makes a big difference to plants trying to prosper in 4 inches of our alkaline, mineral soils. Similarly, reducing weed growth means that more of the limited water reserves in the soil are available for the use of your flowers, shrubs and vegetables. Another place to use mulch this summer is over the root system around the trunk of young trees. In addition to reducing evaporation loss, the mulch reduces the growth of weeds, especially Bermuda grass to compete with the young tree. Based on research that elimination of the Bermuda grass may translate to a 30% greater growth rate for the tree! Do you need more encouragement? The elimination of the weeds near the trunk of the tree means that you or any lawn worker that helps you care for the landscape won’t be encouraged to operate the string mower near the trunk of the tree. A young shade tree wounded by the string mower or other equipment can suffer a permanent inability to grow at a reasonable rate. Compare the wounded tree over 5 years to an unwounded tree of the same species receiving the same water and the growth rate can easily be reduced by one-half. My favorite mulch for flowers and vegetable gardens is live oak leaves. The leaves insulate well even at 2 inches deep, are easy to move with a rake, and make excellent paths. For deeper mulched areas double- cut cedar is attractive and effective. Shredded brush, pecan shells, and pine bark also work well. Use the mulch that is attractive to you and is available at no or a low cost. It is available in bags or you can buy mulch in bulk delivered from horticultural supply firms such as Quality Organic, Keller Material and New Earth Supply. ©Neighborhood News, Inc. PAGE 4

Protect Your Plants While On Vacation By Donna Fossum

The kids have been out of school awhile and you’re planning that much needed summer vacation — maybe for a week or longer. But what will you do about your plants and lawn while you’re away? Just like you would for your pets, it’s important to plan ahead to help your plants survive the separation.

Here are Institute a few tips get seeing you started: edic Performance aretonow patients for the following: • If it hasn’t rained in the past 10-14 days, water your lawn deeply before you leave. “Deeply” is watering two consecutive days or using a “skip” day. For example, a Monday and Tuesday or a Monday and Wednesday. • Vegetable gardens and container plants will need watering every third day or so — enlist the help of a friendly neighbor. • Mow the lawn one day before you leave, but don’t lower the mower blades as it will stress the lawn. • “Deadhead” spent perennials and annual flowers. • Add mulch to areas where there is none to help plants retain water and reduce soil temperature. • Harvest all ripe or nearly ripe vegetables (Give some to the kind neighbor tending to your garden!). It will soon be time to start the fall vegetables in mid-August. • Soak houseplants thoroughly and store them in a bathtub or large cattle trough with a few inches of water; the plants will absorb it as needed through the container drain hole. Now that you’ve prepared your plants, rest easy knowing they’ll be alive and well when you return. Get out and enjoy that vacation!

Chinch Bugs Are No Easy Fix By Nathan Riggs

Summertime in San Antonio means a lot of different things to people — grillin’, fun in the sun, barefoot walks in the lawn and other outdoor activities. Unfortunately, the hot temperatures in July and August also have a daunting impact on local lawns and landscapes by creating water stress. When St. Augustine lawns in full sun become water stressed in July and August, they fall victim to attack by the Southern Chinch Bug (Blissus insularis). Chinch bugs suck the sap from the grass at the point where the blade emerges from the runner, or rhizome. As they feed on the sap, chinch bugs release saliva into the wound, causing the grass to turn yellow and die. This yellowing usually begins at a central point and radiates in a circular pattern outward as the chinch bugs expand their feeding area. St. Augustine grass is a chinch bug’s favorite meal, but Bermuda and Zoysia grasses may be attacked as well.

New

Here are a couple of ways to test for chinch bugs in the affected area. • Drench method: flood an area on the edge of the sick grass with a soapy solution (2 tablespoons of liquid soap to 1 gallon water). If chinch bugs are present, they will emerge from the grass to get away from the soapy water. • Flotation method: take a metal can with both ends removed and push one end into the ground at the border of the sick grass. Slowly fill with water and see if chinch bugs float up. Repeat for several different areas.

ion!

t Loca

Once you’ve determined chinch bugs are present, you must target the infestation. To reduce chinch bug populations, treat a 15-foot radius around the damaged area with a liquid insecticide approved for turf grasses. It is NOT NECESSARY to treat the entire yard because a) non-target beneficial insects will be adversely impacted by the treatment, and b) chinch bugs won’t be present in the entire yard.

After treatment, you must PATIENTLY rehab the affected turf areas. Do not overwater your grass in an effort to get it back to health because the root system is still recovering from the chinch bug onslaught. Instead, water thoroughly, but infrequently to encourage a deeper, more drought-tolerant root system. Secondly, avoid over-fertilizing your grass. Too much nutrients in the soil will encourage weed growth as well as place stress on the damaged root system. Aerate the affected turf areas to allow nutrients, water and oxygen to reach the root zone and get those roots back on the road to recovery. ©Neighborhood News, Inc. PAGE 6

PREVENTION IS THE KEY TO SAFE FUN IN THE SUN Our Central Texas summers are filled with plenty of outdoor activities and fun in the sun. If you are planning on being outdoors on a hot summer day you can take simple precautions to keep you and your family members safe from the summer heat. Stay cool and make simple changes in your fluid intake, activities and clothing during hot weather to help reduce the risk of hyperthermia and heat stroke. • Pack your cooler with water, ice and cool packs or cloths. Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages which are diuretics and can dehydrate you. • Dress for the heat in loose, light colored clothing, wear a hat and use sunscreen. • Stay hydrated and drink more water than usual, 2 to 4 eight ounce cups of water every hour when outside for long periods of time, and when performing strenuous work or exercise. • Don’t over-exercise, take breaks and seek the shade or air conditioning to cool yourself down. • Keep an eye on children, pets and the elderly for signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

WARNING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EMERGENCIES Signs of Heat Exhaustion: • Heavy sweating • Weakness • Cold, pale and clammy skin • Fast, weak pulse • Nausea or vomiting • Urine dark in color or lack of need to urinate; you should urinate at least once every 3-4 hours What To Do: • Move to a cooler location • Lie down and loosen your clothing • Apply cool, wet cloths or compresses to as much of your body as possible • Sip water • If you have vomited and continues, seek medical attention immediately Final Note: Mild heat emergencies can quickly and continually progress to severe heat exhaustion and heat stroke if left untreated. NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Director’s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly. If you do not see a representative listed below for your neighborhood, please consider volunteering. (A neighborhood is welcome to have two representatives and alternate attendance.) Call the POA office at 210-490-9481 for more information. Committee Chairman Viki Melton 210-416-4774
