MAY 2017
Congratulations to all 2017 Graduates!
The Stone Oak POA wishes you the best as you venture into the world to do great things! Remember to value your community, family, and friends. Always set the example to those around you, step up when you are needed, and be a friend to those who need compassion. Your future is bright!
Be Cautious! As another school year comes to an end, please be cautious of children playing, pedestrians, and bike riders. We continue to receive complaints of speeders from throughout the Stone Oak area, especially within neighborhoods. The City of San Antonio and SAPD are aware of the areas of concern. Let’s all work together for our community, and ensure everyone has a fun, safe summer break. Remember the hands-free rule, and slow down!
Earth Day 2017 Thank you to those who attended our 2017 Earth Day Event! Over 15,000 pounds of paper was shredded, and 6 pallets of electronics were collected for proper disposal. The Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District was on site to provide information regarding water conservation and rain barrels. SAWS also participated with their own water conservation tips, and valuable information on their current available coupons and rebates. The POA intends to have a free shredding event annually, the Saturday after Tax Day. We are happy to provide this popular service, and our other coordinated events, for the Stone Oak community. Coming up this fall will be our semi-annual Donation & Dumping Event on September 23rd, and free trees for Arbor Day October 21st.
Stone Oak POA Assessments
Providing an option for residents to dispose of their larger items prevents them from being dumped illegally in our greenspaces. Free trees, and the promotion of free shredding and proper electronics disposal make it easier for each of us to do our part in helping the environment. Education regarding water conservation, gardening, etc. ensures future generations will follow on the path set before them. The POA is proud to coordinate these popular events. They help us all become more conscious of the little things we can do as individuals that make a big, positive impact on our community, and our planet.
July 2017 Stone Oak POA Assessment invoices will go out in the mail mid-June. As a reminder, it is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure the correct mailing information is on file. If you need to change your mailing address, contact information, etc., please complete the “Stone Oak Account Information Change Form” found on our “Assessment Information” page of our website, www. StoneOakPOA.com. Please call our Accounting Staff at 210-490-9481 with any questions.
If you were unable to attend, and would like rain barrel or water conservation information, please visit www. TrinityGlenRose.com. Conservation information, rebates, plant information, and coupons can be found on the SAWS website, www.GardenStyleSanAntonio.com. There is even an option to have a newsletter delivered to your inbox from each of these sites, ensuring you always have the latest ideas and news. And don’t forget- you can also find helpful information on our website, www. StoneOakPOA.com under the “Aesthetics Update” tab.

Protection Program and reviewing all development plans in these environmentally sensitive areas.”
Keeping Trinity Aquifer Water Free from Pollution
M
ost people living in the San Antonio area know that the Edwards Aquifer is the primary source of drinking water source for the City and surrounding communities. But most people do not know that in northern Bexar County, you will find the Trinity Glen Rose Aquifer is being used to provide water to homes and businesses as well. So, what’s the connection? Actually, there is a major connection. As geologists have found, the Edwards Aquifer is significantly recharged by water from the Trinity Aquifer. As rainwater flows across the Contributing Zone of the Edwards Aquifer, that water enters the Trinity Aquifer and then the Edwards. Both aquifers have what are called “karst features,” which means there are fractures, caves, sinking streams, and sinkholes which act as conduits for water to flow into the aquifer from the surface. While this type of recharge is great for the aquifers, it also means that any surface pollution from stormwater runoff or pollutant spills will directly impact the water quality of the aquifer, possibly impairing drinking water and affecting the sensitive ecosystem. “In order to protect the Edwards and Trinity Aquifers from pollution, the State of Texas has enacted regulations for any development that happens on the Recharge and Contributing Zones,” said George Wissmann, Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District general manager. “The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is responsible for the Edwards Aquifer

While the TCEQ rules are designed primarily to protect the Edwards Aquifer, that protection naturally extends to the Trinity Aquifer in northern Bexar County for the geological proximity of the two aquifers. The regulations address abandoned wells, above and below ground storage tanks, construction practices, various types of businesses that can operate in these areas, transportation of chemicals across the area and much more. “Pollution prevention is an important part of the TGR mission,” Wissmann noted. “And so we stay up to date on new legislation, continuing studies of the two aquifers and development we see happening in the District. While it might be obvious that water quality is of utmost importance, there is a lot of territory to monitor. Pollution prevention is one of the topics we want to address more fully with people living in the TGR District, because we all play a part in keeping our water safe to use.”
Attracting and Producing Butterflies in your Landscape - by Calvin Finch
B
utterflies are a desirable addition to our landscapes. They are colorful and interesting. In South and Central Texas we have a large number of butterfly species to enjoy. Our moderate climate allows some species to be active all 12 months of the year. As adults, butterflies feed by collecting nectar from blooming plants. The most obvious way to increase the variety and number of butterflies that visit gardens and landscape is to offer nectar producing blooms 12 months of the year. There are two other actions by gardeners that can add to the number and variety of butterflies that live and reproduce in our landscapes- provide egg-laying sites for butterflies and adopt an insecticide-use policy in your garden that minimizes butterfly or caterpillar damage. Here is a list of plants by calendar quarter that will produce blooms to meet the needs of butterflies all year around. • May, June, July - Plumbago, Mistflower, Milkweed, Pavonia, Cosmos • August, September, October - Coneflower, Vitex, Penta, Lantana, Sunflower, Mealy Blue Sage • November, December, January - Fall Aster, Lavender Lantana, Calendula, Alyssum, Dianthus • February, March, April - Verbena, Coreopsis, Salvia Greggii, Fanick’s Phlox, Rain Lily Read the full article at our new Landscape Page at: www.TrinityGlenRose.com/landscape. ©Neighborhood News, Inc. Hi, we are Dawn (female) and Darwin (male)! We’re looking for a forever home where we can stick together. We both are gentle pups. We sometimes get a little shy and worried around new people, but we are still nice. Even though we can be shy, we are okay with you holding us close to you, and sometimes we’d rather be toted around than put on the ground. Please visit us and give us both a chance at a forever home with you!

Use SAWS Coupons and Rebates to Create a WaterSaver Landscape Oasis! Grass is the single most water-demanding element in a residential landscape. Minimizing grass in your landscape will help you save water and money. Coming May 2017, SAWS will be offering two ways to replace your lawn - with a drought-tolerant garden bed ($100 WaterSaver Landscape Coupon) or a patio ($100 WaterSaver Patioscape Coupon, $200 if you have an irrigation system). Or combine both coupons to create a more diverse, attractive landscape! Each coupon is intended to cover only a portion of the cost associated with the appropriate installment of a 200-square-foot plant bed or pervious patio. You can apply for up to 8 coupon for a total of 1,600 square feet of change. Planning is the key to making smart water-saving landscape changes. Identify the areas of change and visualize the beautiful lush flower beds and inviting outdoor living spaces you can create with WaterSaver Coupons (Check out GardenStyleSA.com for great ideas!) With inspired ideas and a thoughtful budget that includes SAWS incentives you can create a plan and start preparing your landscape. You’ll have taken several important steps on your project by May when SAWS starts accepting applications.
Have an automatic irrigation system? Get your Free Irrigation Consultation Now!

Emitters must be max 0.6 gal/hr. output; indicator head required; beds only (no sub-surface grass). ($100-$375/zone*) 3. Converting Regular Sprinkler Heads to PressureReducing Sprinkler Heads: Grass zones only (no beds). All sprinkler heads in the zone must be replaced with an approved pressure-reducing spray or rotary option. ($50-$175/zone*) 4. Retirement of Irrigation System: Must remove controller, backflow and backflow box, and visible valves and valve boxes. Leave holes open until final inspection consult is completed. ($450 for non-functional systems) ($750 & up* for functional systems) NOTE: Irrigation system work performed BEFORE a SAWS consult occurs will not be considered for the calculation of the rebate. Rebate Information: http://www.gardenstylesanantonio.com/couponsrebates/residential-irrigation-design-rebate/ *Rebate amounts vary based on number of zones and system flow.
If you plan to use the WaterSaver Coupons, you’ll have to cap all irrigation heads in the area(s) you intend to install your changes. If the required changes to the system are extensive, a consultation with our experts will let you know if you qualify for the Residential Irrigation Design Rebate which may further defray the cost of your project. Even if you don’t apply of a coupon but you have an automatic irrigation system, you can still schedule a free consultation at any time. Your system will be checked for performance efficiency, and your program settings will be reviewed to make sure your landscape needs are met without overwatering, potentially help you save thousands of gallons per month. So why wait, schedule your Free Irrigation Consultation Now! For all program details visit GardenStyleSA.com. To schedule an irrigation consultation call 704-7283 or email: consult@saws.org

hile the cool weather annuals are still looking good, it is not too early to start thinking about summer annuals. They are available at area nurseries and can be planted now. Zinnias are the most popular annual for hot weather color. Zinnias are also favorite nectar sources for butterflies and hummingbirds. Plant a large bed and you will receive the extra color provided by large numbers of butterflies. The “Dreamland” selection is one of the large sized zinnias available as transplants. Two of my favorites “Cactus” and “California Giants” are available as seed. The large zinnias grow to three feet tall and make excellent cut flowers. Use the mid-size selections for massed planting. Small sized zinnias such as “Lilliput” do well in containers or as borders. Deer usually do not eat zinnias. Penta can grow in sun or shade as well. They are available in red, white, pink, and lavender. Penta are the premiere container plant for shady patios. Hummingbirds and butterflies take advantage of their large umbels of small blooms. They bloom constantly through late fall. There are many more flowering plants to choose from. Just visit www.TrinityGlenRose.com for more information on what you can grow this summer to add beautiful color to your landscape. Stone Oak - May 2017 - Vol 22 No 5
Save Water with Irrigation System Checkup
D
id you know your irrigation system can use more water in a week than your family uses in a month? According to the EPA, landscape irrigation is estimated to account for nearly one-third of all residential water use nationally, totaling nearly 9 billion gallons per day. In South Texas, as much as 50 percent of water used for irrigation can be wasted due to evaporation, wind, or runoff caused by inefficient irrigation methods and systems. Consequently, you will want your irrigation system to run as efficiently as it can. Fortunately, the water conservation experts from the San Antonio Water System can help. The utility has a WaterSaver Irrigation Consultation program available for its customers. And, with summer heat almost upon us, this is one opportunity you should take advantage of as soon as possible. The WaterSaver Irrigation Consultation program is a one-hour free service provided to SAWS customers who have in-ground automatic irrigation systems. They take appointments on a first come, first served basis. People can call 704-SAVE or email to consult@saws.org to request one and get a first available appointment in their area. Scheduling now is a great idea because the wait time for the service can be several weeks later in the summer. Here’s what happens when the SAWS technician arrives at your home for the irrigation consultation. • Review your plant material and your landscape goals. • Review your irrigation system settings to make sure they are set appropriately to meet your landscape goals. • Review current rebates and coupons that may be right for you. To learn more or request your free WaterSaver Irrigation Consultation, call 210-704-SAVE (7283) or email consult@saws.org. ©Neighborhood News, Inc. PAGE 13

NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Director’s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly. If you do not see a representative listed below for your neighborhood, please consider volunteering. (A neighborhood is welcome to have two representatives and alternate attendance.) Call the POA office at 210-490-9481 for more information. Committee Chairman Viki Melton 210-416-4774
