Be Prepared to Protect Your Water Pipes in Freezing Temps t Disconnect water hoses from the hose bibbs.
Don’t you just love winter weather in South Texas? One day you’re wearing shorts and out for a walk. The next day you’re worrying about a freeze killing your plants and maybe even breaking your water pipes. So, the best advice for making sure you don’t find yourself without water because of a frozen water pipe is to be prepared. If you remember a few things from your chemistry classes, water has a unique property in that it expands when it freezes. Obviously, that expansion can put lots of pressure on the water pipes at your home, and that’s when problems can occur. In fact, if your pipes aren’t insulated, and the temperature drops below 20 degrees, they can become frozen and crack. Pipes that freeze most frequently are outdoor hose bibbs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing. Also keep in mind that some of the Trinity Glen Rose District lies in the foothills of the Texas Hill Country, and temperatures can get a little colder there as compared to the middle of San Antonio. Here are a few suggestions for keeping those pipes ready for those bitter winter blasts that blow through on occasion.
t Buy some pipe insulation from your local hardware store and wrap that insulation around the exposed hose bibbs at your home. You might need a little duct tape to secure the insulation. t If you have a sprinkler system, make sure you turn it off. You really shouldn’t be watering your yard this time of year anyway. Grass hibernates over the winter months and prepares itself for the growing season in the spring. t If you plan to be away from home for several days, shutting off the water can reduce the chances of broken pipes. Also, keep the heater on in your house with the thermostat set to around 55 degrees. t Be a good neighbor. If your neighbor is away or you are next to a vacant house and you suspect a water leak, call your water service provider immediately. t You’ve probably heard that letting water drip from outdoor faucets can help prevent freezing pipes. Well, that is true, but it also wastes water. By being prepared for a sudden drop in temperatures and insulating those outdoor faucets, you should be able to avoid having to let your faucets drip. t You can always call a licensed plumber for help.

Pet Rules for HOA Harmony Stone Oak is proud to be pet-friendly, and we’re happy your four-legged family members are part of our community. Of course, like any good neighbor, it’s important that these pets don’t create an unpleasant environment for everyone else. To avoid unnecessary disputes and potential rule violations, here are some guidelines owners should follow to ensure their furry friends continue to be a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Read the Rules: While most HOAs welcome pets, be sure to check your HOA’s rules and requirements. This can be found in your HOA’s governing documents. Service animals are exempt from any association’s pet requirements. However, please contact your HOA board or manager to ask for an accommodation to keep a service animal. Proof of the service animal’s training or a doctor’s certification may be required. Keep it Clean: No one wants to see, smell or accidently step in the “gift” your dog left on the grassy common area. So when your dog needs to go, be sure to properly dispose of it, preferably in a pet waste disposal can. Not only will this keep our community looking better, but it will help keep ground water clean and help prevent the spread of fecal-borne diseases.
Quiet Down: Pets will be noisy from time to time. However, when loud barking or meowing becomes annoying to neighbors, it’s time to help your pet become less talkative. First, try to find out what causes your pets to get vocal: Do they get noisy when they’ve been alone and bored all day and need some playtime? Have they gone through a stressful change in environment recently? Are they suffering from health issues? Do they simply like saying “hello” to every squirrel, person or car that passes by? When you’ve identified the cause, take remedial actions such as confining them to an area where they feel calm while you’re away, removing or blocking as many stimuli as possible, exercising them more and spending more time with them. You can also take them to a professional or search online for tips on how to train your pets not to get too noisy. No Wandering: According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog or cat to run free threatens their health and welfare, as well as the happiness it brings to you. For the safety of your pets as well as all residents, please do not allow your pets to roam unattended outside. Along with helping protect your pets, leashing your dog is the law.

Plant Now for Maximum Root Growth By Mark A. Peterson, SAWS Conservation & Gardenstyle
Don’t the cold, damp weather fool you — this is the perfect time to plant not only trees, but all sorts of plants and seeds. The list will astound and amaze you. First, why can and should we plant in January? In the South, the ground never freezes and therefore plant roots have the opportunity to grow throughout the winter, maximizing their root growth before the advent of the nasty summer. The earlier they are planted, the faster they’ll become established and they’ll require little to no supplemental water. Some plants are like Aesop’s hare and will grow fast, but soon fade in the April heat. Bulbs, winter annuals and some winter vegetables fall into this category, but other plants really enjoy the cool season and are ready for long, happy life in South Texas. So what can we plant in January?
on!
New
ti Loca
Tubers – this group includes the bulbs of tulips and daffodils, corms of the gladiolus and rhizomes of the irises. Plant in January for their full effect before the heat. Canna lilies and elephant ears are planted much later. Keep the bed or area well drained. Research tubers that will thrive in our soil. There are plenty of sites, but I suggest noted authors’ Scott Ogden and Lauren Springer Ogden books on drought-tolerant tubers and other plants. Vegetables – David Rodriguez, Bexar County horticulturist, suggests: transplants of garden spinach, broccoli ‘Green Magic’, head cabbage, Swiss chard and kale, as well as seeds of snow peas, English peas, spring carrots, beets, radishes, turnips and onion plantlets. Bare root trees – ALL TREES can be planted in January, but fruit trees are traditionally planted in late January. Here’s a complete list of fruit trees that can be planted in Bexar County. My favorites include: apples (‘Gala’; ‘Anna’), peaches (‘June Gold’; ‘Tex-Royal’), plum (‘Methley’; ‘Santa Rosa’), pear (‘Fan-Stil’; ‘Warren’; ‘Kieffer’), persimmon (‘Fuyu”), fig (‘Alma’; ‘Brown Turkey’) and citrus (satsuma ‘Arctic Frost’; ‘Orange Frost’). Annuals – think “P” for pansies, pinks, petunias, phlox, primrose and Persian cyclamen. All of these flowers provide color and aroma to the winter Texas garden. A word on primrose: you will love them, but so do slugs and snails. Provide the appropriate protection such as a trap or repellant. Don’t let the cold weather keep you from getting out in the garden. Now is the perfect time to plant.

Smoke Alarms
at Home
SMOKE ALARMS ARE A KEY PART of a home ďŹ re escape plan. When there is a ďŹ re, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.
SAFETY TIPS
... Install smoke alarms inside and outside each bedroom and sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement. ... Large homes may need extra smoke alarms. ... It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds they all sound.
U! U!
... Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. ... There are two kinds of alarms. Ionization smoke alarms are quicker to warn about aming ďŹ res. Photoelectric alarms are quicker to warn about smoldering ďŹ res. It is best to use both types of alarms in the home.
U!
FACTS A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and ďŹ re. Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level. Smoke alarms should be connected so when one sounds, they all sound. Most homes do not have this level of protection. Roughly 3 out of 5 ďŹ re deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or the alarms are not working.
... A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove. ... People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers. ... Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

5 Tough Texas Natives To Hold Your Garden Together Year-Round By Heather Ginsburg
Do you have an area in your garden that looks like a disaster because all of your perennials froze back and now it is an empty mess? Planting Texas native evergreen plants in key areas of your garden will hold it together year –round. Winter is a perfect time to assess your current landscape and determine where you need more structure. This is because in the winter you can see easily where the flimsy weak areas are where you need more garden bones. Look around your yard, where could you use evergreen structure to carry your garden through every season? Where is your garden lacking a focal point? Backbone plants make for an attractive landscape and provide depth and texture year-round, setting up other plants to look their best when it is their season to shine. 5 tough Texas Native Plants you can plant for evergreen bones/structure are: Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora) Multi-trunked evergreen small tree or shrub valued for its easy care and grape bubblegum smelling flowers in early spring. Every yard needs at least one. Spineless Prickly Pear (Opuntia ellisiana) Light-colored prickly pear that provides evergreen interest without sharp spines. Beautiful greeny-blue color that contrasts nicely with yellow flowers in the spring and dark redishpurple fruits in the fall. Blue Agave (Agave americana L.) Icy blue, very large Agave to anchor a large area in your garden providing a focal point. Take care not to plant near foot traffic – set back from all sidewalks, driveways, etc. Big Bend Yucca (Yucca thompsoniana (formerly Y. rostrata)) Icy bluey-green strappy foliage that is well-behaved on a trunking yucca makes this plant a must if you would like to add tough, evergreen, vertical interest to your garden. Make sure you have sharp drainage and DO NOT irrigate this plant (unless you want to kill it). Cenizo (Leucophyllum frutescens) Beautiful and TOUGH quintessential evergreen Texas shrub for areas of your yard you do not want to water, or your hose does not reach! Bursts into bloom all at once after rain events which is why this plant also goes by the fond name of “Texas barometerbush.” These garden workhorses are able to withstand extreme weather conditions and, in most cases, sail through these extremes where other plants may struggle or go dormant. San Antonio experiences weather extremes – from a dry, scorching summer to a frigid winter, which often takes its toll on local landscapes. But the landscapes that fare best, by far, are those with a good backbone that’s heavy on native plants. There is no time like the present to take a long hard look at your landscape and assess it for change. Look for the weak spots and plan ahead now on where you want to plant new evergreen, water-saving, structural choices that require less maintenance. Stone Oak - January 2017 - Vol 22 No 1
