From Your Stone Oak Property Owners Association Earth Day 2016 Thank you to everyone who braved the rain and participated in our 2016 Earth Day. We did have to end our shredding portion of the event 15 minutes earlier than expected as the truck was completely filled to capacity- its sides were bulging! There was also great success with our first ever electronic waste disposal. We hope to continue offering these services to the Stone Oak community! We are planning a fall Donation and Dumping day, and with the popularity of the shredding event, we may add an additional weekend per year- keep watching our website for updates! Dates will be posted when finalized. Our Spring Rain Barrel Workshop was also a success. Although we had to move the presentations inside due to the rain (a lucky coincidence), spirits were high. With assistance from the Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater District and SAWS, participants made their rain barrels, and took them home to put them to good use!
Landscaping Restrictions The Spring rains have brought beautiful green to our trees and grass. Unfortunately, this time of year also means potential weeds and tall grass. Please remember the Stone Oak Master Plan dictates all properties within its boundaries, commercial and residential, must be maintained. Section VII, Item G, states in part “Grass, weeds and vegetation on each lot shall be kept mowed and trimmed at regular intervals. Weeds and grass shall be removed regularly from all beds and planting areas so as not to become unsightly. All shrubs and trees shall be trimmed, and all dead branches removed, as needed to maintain an acceptable appearance. Dead trees, shrubs, vines and plants shall be promptly removed from the property and replaced as needed to maintain an acceptable appearance of the lot. All landscaping shall be property maintained, fences and structures shall be repaired and maintained, and no visually objectionable or unsightly usage of lots publicly visible shall be permitted…” The Master Plan can be viewed in its entirety on our website, www.StoneOakPOA.com, under the Governing Documents tab. Property owners in residential communities should also adhere to their individual HOA landscaping guidelines- check with your HOA management company with any questions.
Loose Dogs In recent months, the Stone Oak POA office has received numerous calls regarding loose dogs within residential communities. Not only is this dangerous to the animal, it is in violation of City of San Antonio Code, and the Stone Oak Master Plan. The City of San Antonio Code states “all dogs must be confined to their owner’s property at all times except when on a leash. Animal Care Officers have the legal authority to enter unenclosed front yards of private property to impound unrestrained animals.” Section VII, Item L, of the Stone Oak Master Plan states “…All animals shall be kept in strict accordance with all local laws and ordinances (including leash laws)…It shall be the responsibility of the owners of such household pets to prevent the animals from running loose or becoming nuisances to other residents…” In addition, you should check with your HOA Management Company to check their restrictions. Report any loose dogs to your HOA security, if applicable, and your HOA Management Company so it can be addressed promptly and appropriately. You can also contact the City of San Antonio at 3-1-1. This can be done anonymously, and you can request a report number for your files which you can supply to the HOA Management Company as well. Stone Oak is a busy community. A loose dog running into traffic on one of our major thoroughfares could result in tragedy. We all love our pets- please clean up after them, and keep them safe! Stone Oak - May 2016 - Vol 21 No 5

L ife in The Hills ... at Sonterra by Sharon Meyer
As I drive through Stone Oak and Sonterra, I smile a lot. It’s such a beautiful, well-manicured place to live. Flowers and trees are flourishing; spring has sprung! But, what makes a neighborhood ‘home’? Great neighbors!
It was a beautiful spring morning in March when neighbors in The Hills at Sonterra came together at their clubhouse for “Beautification Day in The Hills. Men pushing wheelbarrows, women and kids pulling wagons, digging holes, spreading topsoil and mulch, serving breakfast tacos, fresh fruit, juice, Gatorade, water and coffee! I kept hearing Mr. Rogers song in my head, “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood ... won’t you be my neighbor? And just a few weeks later, the young residents were hunting 400 hidden Easter Eggs, having their pictures taken with the Bunny, playing and dancing with the Easter Bunny, egg relay races, and games.
I love living in The Hills! area.rep.hillsatsonterra@gmail.com

Hi, I’m Mark I like to chill low to the ground; it’s my style. Oh, not to mention having my belly rubbed while lounging in the sun. Aside from that, I do enjoy taking strolls and engaging my senses of the surrounding environment. I am a friendly boy and like being around people. I might tease you too! I will get wound up with energy and go to you, then turn around and run back. I like to play games sometimes. Being sweet and playful is second nature to me, so if I meet your needs, I just might be your new love to take home. Mark is neutered, micro-chipped, and current on his vaccinations, so stop by to meet him at the PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center at 8520 Fourwinds Dr, San Antonio, or visit his pet profile on ADL’s website at www.adltexas.org.

Taking Care of Hummingbird Feeders By: Brad Wier, SAWS conservation consultant A feeder provides an easy place to see hummingbirds in action, but this is mostly for your benefit. Meticulous maintenance of the feeder is critical for the health of these wee-winged wonders. My mother always enjoys hanging a hummingbird feeder, and from her I learned at an early age to enjoy them, too. Not just the constant commotion of her own trips back and forth to the feeder, but the thrill of seeing local hummingbirds glowering in the summer garden, bathing in wet leaves, or getting in my face to try to separate me from the colors on my own T-shirt. I’ve also had to catch them in my own hands for rescues after they wandered into a tent or a greenhouse. I guess once you’ve felt a hummingbird’s heart beating in your hand, it can make these tough little hummers seem a little more delicate. Of course my mother always seemed to expend a lot of effort to keep the feeders clean; only begrudgingly did I learn that this maintenance can make a critical difference between enjoying hummingbirds and making them sick. So here are a few of my mother’s tips for taking care of wild hummingbirds: 1. If you keep a feeder, keep it clean – once a week in winter, and more often in summer. A dirty feeder can give a hummingbird a fungal infection, and these fungal infections are fatal, not only for the bird, but it can also be passed on to her young. If you find black mold on the nectar ports, more extreme measures are needed: soak the feeder in a solution of 1/4 cup bleach to one gallon of water for one hour. Then rinse it thoroughly, no soap. 2. To help keep it clean, choose a feeder that’s very easy to clean in the first place. Mom finally settled on the
HummZinger because she can remove the lid easily and reach everything inside. (In addition, the version with raised perches makes it easier to see the bird while it sips.) Two indispensable tools for maintaining a hummingbird feeder: a toothbrush (for scrubbing out the dish) and a pipe cleaner (for cleaning mold from the ports.) These should be kept easily accessible right under the same sink where you wash the feeders. The National Audubon Society recommends cleaning with one part white vinegar to four parts water; after cleaning, wash the feeder out thoroughly. 3. Most importantly, never ever leave nectar out to ferment. As it would in a human, fermented nectar causes liver damage in hummingbirds. Taking the feeder down and bringing it inside is always a better choice than leaving it out to rot. As a rule of thumb, only put out two days-worth of nectar during the summer. If it’s turned cloudy, it must be replaced. In summer this can sometimes happen in a single day; hanging the feeder in the shade may buy you a little more time between cleanings. Remember, hummingbirds are wild birds, and they aren’t on life support from the feeder. Even in winter, hummingbirds derive most of their food from other sources – that’s what they spend all their time doing. A feeder just provides an easy place to see them in action, but this is mostly for your benefit. So if you’re going to be gone for a couple of weeks this summer, just take the feeder down, unless you have a meticulous neighbor (or son) to look after it. Better yet, plant some perennials to keep them fed all year long, without the need for constant maintenance from you.

ZIKA VIRUS Zika virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and there is no specific treatment or vaccine currently available. The best way to avoid getting the virus is to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitoes. About 20% of people with Zika virus actually get ill. Severe disease, requiring hospitalization, is uncommon and death due to the virus is rare.
These mosquitoes are daytime biters, but can also bite at night. Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water- buckets, tires, tree holes, animal water dishes, etc.
The incubation period of Zika virus is thought to be a few days to a week, but is still unknown. Symptoms include fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, and headache. Symptoms tend to be mild and last from 2-7 days. Zika virus can be contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito, through blood transfusions, through sexual contact, and from mother to child during pregnancy. The mosquitoes that are able to transmit Zika virus are also able to transmit dengue and Chikungunya viruses.
To protect yourself from mosquito bites, wear light-colored clothing that covers as much skin as possible, use insect repellent (read and follow label instructions), use screening on doors and windows, use mosquito netting (if needed) while sleeping, and reduce standing water areas. For more information on Zika virus, please see the CDC website here http://www.cdc.gov/zika/index.html For more information or help with identification, contact Wizzie Brown, Texas AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist at 512.854.9600.
