Thank you to everyone who helped make our Spring 2016 Donation & Dumping Day a success! A little rain did not dampen spirits! You donated so much to the Disabled Veterans Association, an additional truck had to be rented to accommodate everything. And once again, several trucks of trash were carted away at the end of the day- possibly saving our community from unwanted dumping. A total of 374 car and truckloads came through our lot, with many waiting in lines down Huebner. We thank everyone for their patience. This event is free, and is coordinated by the POA for the Stone Oak community. If it continues to grow, we will have to ﬁnd another location within Stone Oak to utilize as a collection site. One of the very few insects besides bees that produce honey! This past weekend one of our grandkids tossed a toy into our live oak in the back yard. I forgot all about the toy when I noticed a very large nest. “Squirrels?” I pondered. It was pretty high up in the tree so I took a photo and enlarged it; there were little black things crawling around the outside. Large ants? Nope. Mexican Honey Wasps. One of my friends in Austin recommended Vanessa Lopez, a third generation beekeeper at BEE TEXAS. Within two days, she and her husband were in our backyard carefully pruning the tree around the nest, to keep it intact while they relocate it to a farm. This particular nest probably started its formation last Spring or early Summer, according to the expert. And based on its current size, it contained between 45,000 to 60,000 wasps, along with honey! It took over an hour to remove their home and Vanessa was stung quite a few times in the process, even though she wore her beekeeper gear.

nest goes from a small, ﬂat oval to a sausage, or capsule-like shape over time. The surface of the nest is blotchy, colored brown or grey. The texture of the surface is that of rough cardboard, and is not glossy. Newly founded nests can reach small football size in about 30-40 days. Some occupied nests are as long as three feet and are found in the canopy of a shrub or a tree. Nests are often found in suburban settings that are close to human habitation. They are well covered in the foliage in which they are built. Do they sting? Ouch, yeah!! The sting is barbed and stays in the wound. According to Vanessa, one sting feels like a repeated sting for about two hours, followed by several hours of intense throbbing. When she left our yard, she was headed to her truck where she had a large bottle of Benadryl waiting for her. Don’t like your job? Don’t complain!

If you’re really interested in detailed information on the Mexican Honey Wasp, you can Google it. But here’s a little information that I think is important for the residents of Stone Oak. These wasps can be found from southern United States to Northern Argentina and include a total of 16 species. OUR squatters were B. mellifica, the only species present in the US, found in both Arizona and southern Texas, to Nicaragua. B. mellifica make paper nests that range in size from 15.75” to 20” in diameter. The nest begins as a single irregular layer of cells attached to the first layer of carton on a branch. Clumps of cells on the branch are then extended into the first hanging layer. Successive layers are formed independently and extend out and around the bottom of the first layer. This happens multiple times around and over the previous layer, resulting in a growing spiral. The Stone Oak - March 2016 - Vol 21 No 3

Additional note from the Editor: According to Entomologist Nathan Riggs, Mexican Honey Wasps are a really neat ﬁnd as their nests are so unique- and they produce honey. He stresses they are not aggressive unless their nest is disturbed. They should be handled by a beekeeper instead of a pest control company- they are important pollinators!
