1. Set aside time for your student to read each day during summer break – 15 to 30 minutes is all it takes, and the time will fly by! 2. Students should practice affixes and vocabulary words to help improve their reading and spelling skills – make it a fun game by putting together flashcards. 3. Work on 3-4 math problems a day that the student learned during the previous school year so their mathematical skills don’t get rusty. 4. To improve reading comprehension, consider offering your child or teenager a reading comprehension workbook, which will test them with self-quizzes. 5. Review the past grade level’s grammar concepts and begin to work on the next year’s concepts – 2-4 grammar lessons a week will do. Have your student write a creative paragraph each week – 6. it will improve their written language skills and is a fun and creative activity! Pinpoint the subject that your child had the most trouble 7. with the previous school year and make sure to work in some practice in this area each day.

1. Pack a picnic lunch and a blanket, then go outside to eat. 2. Roast marshmallows over a fire pit. 3. Catch fireflies. (Be sure to release them back into the night.) 4. Take a day trip to someplace you have never been or go to a favorite place. 5. Take a nap under a shade tree on a blanket. 6. Splash in a cool stream. 7. Hang your laundry outside to dry – it is amazing how fresh it will smell after blowing in the breeze all day. 8. Play in the rain. 9. Make Sun Tea or Sun Lemon-aid (for kids who may not like tea). 10. Make your own freeze pops with kool-aid and ice trays. 11. Lie in the grass and find shapes in the clouds. 12. From a safe place, watch a thunder storm move in. Be at awe with the power of nature. 13. Sit on the bank of a stream or river, and listen to the songs of the water. 14. Make a blanket tent outside between the trees, on the deck or porch, or on the trampoline. 15. Sit on the porch step and eat watermelon. Go ahead, let the juice run down to their elbows.

World Famous Philippi Mummies at Barbour County Historical Museum 200 N. Main St., Philippi, WV 304-4574846 In 1888, farmer and amateur scientist Graham Hamrick, West Virginia's own backwoods Dr. Frankenstein, mummified two bodies with his patented embalming potion. These two mummies traveled the world, were lost for decades, lived under someone’s bed, survived two state floods, and were laid out to dry on the front lawn of the Philippi post office. True story! World's Largest Teapot Carolina, Ave., Chester, WV It is 12 feet high, 44 feet wide, originally built as a giant keg by William "Babe" Devon as part of a Hire's Root Beer ad promotion. It was brought to Chester in 1938 and converted into a teapot to trumpet the region's then vibrant pottery industry.

ffective July 9, 2013, failure to wear a seat belt will be a primary offense. This law allows police to pull over motorists if the driver or passengers aren't wearing seat belts. West Virginia joins 30 other states that have elevated seat belt laws. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin said in a news release, "Buckling your seat belt is one of the easiest lifesaving precautions you can take, helping ensure your safety on the road. This bill is expected to save 17 lives each year and prevent 184 serious injuries."
Seven Tips For Safer Home Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs Now that summer is in full swing, stories about home pool or hot tub tragedies are making headlines across the nation.
The American Red Cross and National Swimming Pool Foundation® want all home pool and hot tub owners to make safety their priority by following these safety guidelines: 1. Secure your pool with appropriate barriers. Completely surround your pool with a 4-feet high fence or barrier with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Install alarms on any doors leading to the pool that sound when opened unexpectedly. Place a safety
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 fireworks-related injuries are treated each year in hospitals, doctor's offices, clinics, surgery centers and emergency rooms. Injuries to children represent more than half of those accidents. If not handled properly, fireworks can cause burn and eye injuries. They have been known to blow away little fingers and permanently disfigure hands, legs and even faces. Never allow young children to play with or go near fireworks, including sparklers. They may seem harmless, but sparklers can exceed temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees, hot enough to melt gold. Even after they burn out, the metal holder for sparklers remain hot enough to cause a serious burn injury. The best way to protect your family is not to use any fireworks at home - period. Attend public fireworks displays, and leave the lighting to the professionals.
cover on the pool or hot tub when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access. Consider installing a pool alarm that goes off if anyone enters the pool. 2. Keep children under active supervision at all times. Stay in arm’s reach of young children. Designate a responsible person to watch the water when people are in the pool—never allow anyone to swim alone. Have young or inexperienced swimmers wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. 3. Ensure everyone in the home knows how to swim well by enrolling them in age-appropriate water orientation and learn-to-swim courses. 4. Keep your pool or hot tub water clean and clear. Use proper chemical levels, circulation and filtration. Regularly test and adjust the chemical levels to minimize the risk of West Virginia's Ultimate Guide to Summer
earaches, rashes or more serious diseases. 5. Establish and enforce rules and safe behaviors, such as “no diving,” “stay away from drain covers,” “swim with a buddy” and “walk please.” 6. Ensure everyone in the home knows how to respond to aquatic emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking water safety, first aid and CPR courses from the Red Cross. 7. Enroll in the two-hour Home Pool Essentials online course (www. HomePoolEssentials.org ) for only $19.95. This class describes steps you can take to help prevent tragedy and how to care for your pool and hot tub. It includes a 30-page resource guide and six months access to the site. Start out with short sessions and frequent breaks. Play in your own yard to start, then move your games to a park, when other dogs and people do not distract him. If your dog gets bored, take a break and try later. Be sure to establish rules and correct any nipping, biting, jumping, or aggression. These behaviors are sometimes caused by overexcitement. If they occur - stop the game, take a break, and resume later. Play time should be fun time. Try these games and activities during your play time. ;;Freshen up on Obedience Training. Work on common commands such as sit, stay, come, etc. Give lots of praise! When those are mastered, try new or more advanced commands such as down, roll over, circle, jump, etc...
;;Cool Pool Fun. On a hot summer day, fill a kiddie pool with water. After getting your dog involved in fetch, throw a ball in the pool. Some dogs may be hesitant or afraid of the water. Do not force the pool idea, try the next day. If the pool doesn’t interest your dog at all, try a sprinkler or water hose game - chase the water stream. Warning: water in kiddie pools and hoses can become very hot from the sun.
