November 11th By Pat Farrell

PRSRT STD U.S. Postage PAID San Antonio, Texas Paid Permit #1590

On current calendars November 11th is known in the United States as “Veterans Day” but that was not always the case. There are many Americans today who still recall when November 11th was known as “Armistice Day.” And, defined as a formal agreement between warring parties to cease fighting, an armistice does not necessarily end a war but only stops hostilities until negotiations can, if ever, actually lead to a lasting peace. An armistice was most notably used at the end of World War I (WWI) to cease the fighting on the Western Front between the Allies and Germany. The WW I conflict (also known as the “Great War”) was said to have been triggered when, on June 28, 1914, during a visit to Sarajevo, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne of AustriaHungary, and his wife Sophie were assassinated by a Yugoslav nationalist. Although trouble had been brewing in the area for five

years, Austria-Hungary delivered ten intentionally made unacceptable demands via the “July Ultimatum” which then led to the July 23, 1914 declaration of war on the Kingdom of Serbia. When each side was joined by other nations, they began a battle that ultimately spread throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It is interesting to note that, despite the international turmoil it created, the citizens of Vienna exhibited little or no reaction to, or interest in, the assassination of the Archduke and his wife. Initially the principal Allies during WWI included the British Empire, French Republic, Russian Empire, Empire of Japan and Kingdom of Italy while the opposing side was mainly Germany and Austria-Hungary. The United States made their entry into the fray in 1917, essentially arising as a new global power as it declared war against Germany because of its continued attacks on international shipping. Finally, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the Allies and Germany signed an armistice agreement to stop fighting on the Western Front and the November 11th Armistice Day was created. Though many today may be unaware, the vivid red poppies that in 1915, flowered on the battlefields and burial sites in Belgium, France and Gallipoli, became a symbol for the great loss of life in war. This does cover a lot of history but, after all, it was known as “The War to End All Wars!” Following the armistice many national borders were redrawn, some Empires ceased to exist, and several nations were either created or restored as the “spoils of war” were distributed among the “win-

ners.” This was one of the deadliest conflicts in history as at least nine million combatants and seven million civilians were killed and more than 20 million were severely injured. In 1921, on Armistice Day, the remains of an unknown American, British and French soldier were buried at Arlington, Westminster Abbey and the Arc de Triomphe respectively. Unfortunately, the effort to prevent future conflict failed and it is believed that economic depression, the rise in nationalism, revolutions in many countries and the humiliation felt by Germany gave rise to Nazism and set the stage for World War II (WWII). By 1939 Adolph Hitler had signed strategic partnerships with Italy and Japan to fulfill his dream of world domination and with his Nazi Party began by invading Poland, leading to both France and Great Britain declaring war on Germany and ushering in WWII. The United States (US), remembering the cost of their involvement in WWI, determined that this was a problem in Europe and was really none of their concern. That mindset changed when the Japanese bombed the United States naval fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, destroying 21 ships, 188 planes and killing 2403 people and learning that both Italy and Germany had declared war on the US four days later. By then 134,000 had enlisted for military service. The war raged on in Europe until 1945 when Germany surrendered in May and the peace settlement called for the division of Germany into four areas to be controlled by the Soviet Union, United States, Britain or France. Simultaneously the war in the Pacific continued until early August,

November 1, 2016

1945 when atom bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki leading the Japanese to formally surrender in September. Among international conflicts in history, World War II proved to be the most devastating , taking the lives of some 35 to 60 million people, which includes some 6 million Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis, and as would be expected, millions more suffered serious injuries. Although Russia and the United States worked together during WWII they ended up with a mutual distrust that contributed to their continued “cold war” and although it seemed to thaw for awhile it looks to be on the way back. August of 1945 also saw Russia declare war on Japan which had ruled Korea from 1910 until the Japanese surrender. North Korea, above the 38th parallel was liberated by Russia while the US moved into South Korea. Each part of Korea had its own government and each claimed to be the true Korean government. Hostilities between the two Koreas were relatively minor until June of 1950 when North Korea moved into the Southern territory in what was considered a major act of aggression and the US, with the help of 20 other countries came to protect South Korea. The Korean War continued until July 27, 1953 when an armistice was signed that created the Korean Demilitarized Zone which separates the two Koreas. Since no peace treaty was created the two countries are, to this day, still at war and periodic clashes continue. As there was a lack of public attention this war is often referred to as the “Forgotten War” or the “Unknown War.” At this point we had survived three major wars and recognized that WWII had experienced the greatest mobilization of troops in the country’s history - more than 16 million. The service organizations requested that Armistice Day be renamed Veterans Day to honor all those who had served in any war.

The legislation to celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th was signed by President Eisenhower on June 1,1954, however the celebration date was changed in 1968 when the Uniforms Holiday Bill moved it to the fourth Monday in October to ensure a threeday holiday for federal employees. Recognizing the historical and patriotic significance of the actual date, in 1978 President Ford returned the legal holiday to November 11th or if falling on a weekend to the prior Friday or following Monday. The next trouble spot was occurring in Vietnam, previously occupied by the Japanese, where this country too had divided

November 1, 2016

into North and South governments and were experiencing clashes at the borders. By 1960 the US presence had increased to 9,000 troops there and continued to grow by thousands through the years until the hostilities ceased in 1975 with the complete withdrawal of our armed forces. This was not a forgotten war though, as it was essentially carried out on television and public sentiment against our involvement was ever present. But it was the men and women who served in Vietnam who seemed to have been forgotten, and who were not welcomed home as had happened after previous wars. Today the country is still involved

Follow Us @renewssource

in war settings in Iraq and Afghanistan and one can hope we prove successful there and are able to bring our troops home soon. It is important that we continue to honor our service men and women when they are deployed, or as they return home, for they are protecting us as they try to keep war from being waged on our shores. So, while we will soon celebrate Veterans Day others may celebrate Remembrance Day for the same reasons. An interesting comment from a present day serviceman noted that he does not like to celebrate a Veterans Day as he feels it symbolizes war, whereas Armistice Day symbolized peace for him. I don’t agree!

The Way I See It By Cathey Meyer

Deleted Recently, I attended a current communication in technology workshop hosted by a very smart collection of business women. The chief operating officer of a local high tech company delivered the keynote speech. Why, you might wonder, would a retired person care about technical communication? Turns out, I did not stay retired long as I have re-entered the workforce. The idea of retirement is wonderful, but the reality of a minuscule monthly check—not so much. The call to assist with the development of a downtown nonprofit came at just the right time. I needed both additional income and a way to stay connected to the ever changing technology world I seem to fight every possible moment. The keynote was full of both good and bad news. The good news involved the continual increase of women in the field of technology; the bad news involved the reality that more things change, the more compli-

cated they become and the more they remain the same. Apparently, with all the social media communication these days (Facebook, Twitter, Snap Chat, Instagram LinkdIn, Pinterest, Tumblr, YouTube, Flickr, Reddit, etc.) plain old email has now made a comeback in communication. As an original AOL email account user, I have taken grief when I share my dated AOL email address. Now we come full circle to the point of origin and I am cool again. That remains the same, but the complication comes in the number of email addresses we all seem to manage, acknowledge, respond to and/or actually use. The best I can tell, I am responsible for seven email accounts: Two I actually use (one for family and close friends; one for junk email and other stuff) as regularly visited sites.

REAL ESTATE NEWS SOURCE

Another is a work account. Two were opened because I needed something through the gods of google and Microsoft, so I am gmailed and micromailed which I check when I think about it every other month. One is for the neighborhood association whining and complaining. The last one I am aware of is a pseudo family account used by some of my relatives as they need assistance with various medical issues. I get to claim the account as I am the only one who can remember the username, password and security questions. As the hacking news spreads, I have become vigilant in attempting to alter access to these accounts, but I have failed in succeeding in making changes. First you are instructed to change your password. In reality, I am assuming if a foreign invader has managed to infiltrate my private cyber space, a multi-lettered, odd numbered, random symbol password is not much of an obstacle. My success rate in resetting passwords is about -.0001%. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the correct answers to the clever responses I gave to the simple questions. Once I allow the ‘system’ to remember my passwords, I lose all possibility to recover them and then have to set a new password and cannot remember if I am using the new, used or yet to be created password. My new system is to leave the old password alone and assume the hackers think I am creating new

7

passwords for them to hack when in fact, the old password will just pass them by. The news that the old reliable email conglomerate of Yahoo was hacked in 2014 has me totally confused. If it has been two years since the acquisition of my private email information, what good does changing EVERYTHING do now?! Don’t the evil hackers already have control of my unknown cyber treasures? Fortunately, my Yahoo account was my junk mail account—the one I used for times I really did not want be bothered with spam and other unwanted email information. Just between you and NewsSource, not much of the initial information I shared was completely accurate: I might be a few years younger than my profile, I might have had a sex change operation since opening the account and I have moved several times since the account was opened back in the 1900’s. However, being the rule follower I try to be I did make an attempt to change my account information. Ironically, because I could not recall any of the truths I told in 1996, I was rejected on all effort to update my account. Not to be defeated, I attempted to just delete the account, but to date, have been unsuccessful. So, to all my new cyber hacker family, I welcome you into my fake world of communication and wish you all the best with the rest of my family spam.

By M'Lissa Steel President, Women’s Council of REALTORS, Hill Country

Busy, Busy October! After such a successful September, you wouldn’t think Women’s Council of Realtors Hill Country Chapter would have much steam left—well the momentum kept rolling into October. We started off with a wrap up party for the Bras for a Cause committee held at a local rental venue provided by Susan Philips with A-1 Vacation NB. This property hosts 3 homes and an outdoor covered entertainment area which was perfect for winding up such a successful event. Glenda Schultz, Chairwoman, and Sally Singley, Co-chairwoman and local event founder, were on hand to thank volunteers and listen to suggestions for making next year ’s event even more successful. Monies from this event benefit Pink Heals of Hays County, the CTMC Women’s Center for Breast Health as well as our chapter. Our Executive line met and

discussed how great it was to have two tables at Bras for a Cause filled with state and national WCR officers. The WCR State Orientation was held in San Antonio this year and the dates just happened to coincide with the Hill Country Chapter ’s Bras for a Cause. Since the Hill Country Chapter is recognized state-wide for the successful event held each year it was only natural that this would be a great year for some of the movers and shakers in WCR to come see for themselves what about our event sets us apart. These guests made positive comments to our incoming officers throughout orientation in San Antonio! President Elect Paula Durocher discussed how enlightening the materials presented at the State Orientation in San Antonio were for her incoming line of officers who were able to

Follow Us @renewssource

attend. Plans are underway for a successful transition of officers and next year ’s group is busy getting ready! Installation for the 2017 officers will be held at Seekatz on November 17th at 6pm. Also discussed at the Executive Meeting was how hard saying goodbye is…and how hard it is to fill big shoes. Yes, we lost a longtime member, friend and former President of WCR Hill Country Chapter, Isaac Mahone, to the draw of the Big Apple. Isaac has left us to pursue a lifelong dream of living in New York City. We wish Isaac all the luck in the world, but he will always have a welcoming place to come back to! Since October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it seemed only natural that we would have a speaker in line with same for our Networking Luncheon. Leslie Mouton, local celebrity and breast cancer survivor disappointed no one. She gave a talk that was at times hilarious and at other times deeply moving. I listened to her talk and discovered what a truly beautiful individual she is, as well as being brave, authentic and inspirational. Although I haven’t battled breast cancer personally, I know so many people who have battled breast cancer as well as other types of cancer. Leslie discussed how one of the hardest things about breast

cancer and the treatment was losing her hair. Her talk took me back to the battle my father waged against bone, lung and eventually liver cancer. He also was really upset about the loss of his hair. He was a very handsome man, but not in the least bit vain. However, men and women without hair tell the world that they’re battling cancer—whether they want to or not. At least women have the option of hiding their battle by wearing a wig. Leslie explained that she wore a wig on the air so that her bald head wouldn’t be the only thing her viewers paid attention to; however, she became internationally recognized as a pioneer of breast cancer awareness because she went on the air without her wig for a broadcast at a time this hadn’t been done. As I said, she is a very brave woman. In November we will host the 2016 State WCR President, Ethel O’Dell at a networking luncheon honoring our previous chapter presidents. This will be our last monthly luncheon for the 2016 year. This luncheon will be followed by our installation banquet on November 17th. Our last 2016 event will be Affiliate Appreciation Night on the evening of December 13th. at Alamo Drafthouse in New Braunfels where we will be entertained by a Christmas movie and interactive props.

She attended The University of The GRIGSBY Incarnate Word where she found a love for helping others through her undergraduate degree in Psychology. Upon graduation, she went to Santa Barbara, California and returned with a Masters in Organizational Psychology and a desire to dig further, completing a Masters in Social Work at Our Lady of the Lake University. Although most of her clinical work as a therapist and case manager involves work with children, adolescents and their families, she found herself wanting to interact with people outside the hospital walls and took on more clinical sales roles and business development in nationally recognized corporations in San Antonio. Eventually she opened her own private practice providing

direct clinical care, as well as healthcare consulting for local treatment centers and provider practices. Cathryn is married to a former golf professional, Jody Grigsby, and together they raise their two children, Logan and Leighton, who both attend Alamo Heights Schools.
