Getting to the ROOTS of the Matter Recently, my sweet husband and I had the blessing to attend a beautiful wedding down south of us in the Shiner area. On the way down, we were passing through Yoakum, which is the area where my Dad was born and raised. I commented to Wes that several family members were buried near there, including my paternal grandparents. Wes said we should go by to pay our respects since we weren’t in a time crunch. He asked me if I remembered where the graves were. I jokingly told him I did… ”The last time I was here, they were right on the other side of a tent.” He laughed and said something rude about the way my brain works. The day was gray and windy and COLD. I had no intention of staying long, but Wes was curious as to “who was who.” After I pointed out grandparents, aunts and uncles, (and my toes began to freeze), I headed for the car. Wes continued to explore, and took some photos of some very old, very interesting looking headstones. When he got back in the car, he asked me if I knew who Samuel Stevens was and showed me one of the pictures. I knew he was family, but didn’t know off the top of my head exactly where he fit. Thanks to FindaGrave.com, I was able to tell Wes that Samuel was actually my great-great grandfather! My Aunt Nancy Page is the genealogist in the Stevens family, and I know she has shared all this information with our bunch before. Maybe I was too young. Maybe I was too busy running after little ones. Or maybe at the time, I just didn’t think it was important enough to pay attention. Whatever the reason - good or bad - it was suddenly very important to me. Who were these people who were partially responsible for my being here? We continued to dig and to research. By the end of the weekend, we had visited four cemeteries and the graves of my grandmother and grandfather, great grandmother and great grandfather, two great-great grandmothers and grandfathers, two great-great-great grandmothers, AND a four time great grandmother! I think once you become a grandparent and begin to truly realize your own mortality, it makes you wonder if future generations will ever know about you. My brother Dan and his wife Kelli gave my mom the “Storyworth” gift. She spent a year answering a different weekly question about her life. I have thoroughly enjoyed helping her create the book these stories will become. It has reminded me of how incredibly special my parents are and how I want my children to remember that. I want them to know how much I loved MY grandparents and how amazing they were. Last weekend really drove home how amazing it is to know where you come from…how wonderful it is to know the stories of your family. I encourage you to write yours down. Not long ago, I had a reader tell me “she felt like she knows me,” although we had just met. I am sure it’s because I try not to “put on airs” as my grandmother would say, and pretend to be something (or someone) I’m not. I’m just me. The great, great, make that grate-ful, granddaughter of men and women who were ordinarily extraordinary. How cool is that?

Until next time,

~

Karen

From Our Readers I have been well pleased with my advertisement in Postcards Magazine. I have several new customers because of it. Two men called me up within a few days of each other laughing about the story about the crawl space and freezer chest. We laughed together. One customer called us in to do a deep clean (which includes cleaning the refrigerator & oven), taped to the freezer was a sign eye level that said “Don’t look in the freezer.“ I took a picture of the sign because it made us laugh. Have a wonderful day!!

Thanks so much for the article on Old Main. I want to keep my copy of Postcards, where can I get another copy to mail to a friend? Judy Wilkins Editor’s Note: We have several rack locations, but they can usually be found easily at your local Chamber of Commerce office. Do You Know? Story by Linda W. Perkins Photos by Gina Turner

Dr. Robin Montgomery 10 Postcards Magazine: Lake Conroe Edition | April 2022

It’s in the most rural areas you often find the richest stories of Texas history. One of those areas is Richards, an unincorporated community of about 300 people, 25 minutes due west of New Waverly, where Robin Montgomery, Ph.D., lives. It is in Dr. Montgomery’s home, a sprawling white house with a blue porch, that the history of Texas comes alive as he shares his own personal stories, as well as those of famous people who have shaped the Lone Star State. A historian and retired professor of political science with five degrees, Dr. Montgomery is a prolific writer and author, whose passion for Texas and its people has spilled out into 14 books, numerous newspaper articles and events including the planned Celebrating Togetherness: “Texas Republic and the Cradle of Texas Road,” a Vision of Cultural Integration for the Nation by the Montgomery Historical Society. An accomplished musician, he not only talks and writes about Texas, but has written nine songs about it as well.

You are well known in Conroe and write for the newspaper there. How did you end up in Richards? I was born and raised in Conroe, but I spent a lot of time in Richards growing up. This house used to be two houses – the original part was built in 1936 by my grandfather. My father retired as the principal of Conroe High School in 1978, and he built the second part of the house. When I retired from teaching at Southwestern Oklahoma State (University) in 1996, I came back here to take care of my mom, who was widowed. Now I am

widowed – I lost my wife two years ago – and my daughter is building an Airbnb on the property. With Conroe and Bryan both growing so fast, we figure Richards will get some of that growth, too.

Tell me about growing up in Conroe. I understand you’ve had some pretty interesting experiences and have been connected to some well-known people there. I was kind of a jock in high school, was president of my class, and had a band, so I was

pretty well known. My dad was a basketball coach but after a while he started boxing, and his best friend was Henry Harris, the father of Roy Harris. Roy is a miracle story. He was a boxer and went on to have a title fight against Floyd Patterson in 1958. But part of the story, which is unusual for a boxer of that title, is that he went on to get a law degree and he became a millionaire in real estate, and was the county clerk for 28 years. I also went to school with Mary McCoy from K-STAR, one of the top deejays and entertainers in Texas. There was an article in Texas Monthly about her recently, and she may be the longest continuously running radio broadcaster in the nation. She started with KMCO when she was 12.

You were on the radio at a young age too, right? Share a little more about your band. Well, there was another boxer named Campbell “Wildman” Woodman, and when I got to junior high, he taught me how to play a guitar, and we started a band together. It was called “Robin and the Wild Robineers,” and we had a 30-minute radio show on Saturday mornings. Buddy Moorhead, who the Conroe High School stadium is named after, was on my high school football team, and he ended up joining our band after our first drummer moved away. He was a natural! Then, when I was in junior in high school in 1956, I was out one day with Henry Harris, Roy’s little brother, and we were on our way

to their house. They had a cousin named Johnny who was a little crazy, and here comes this train, and I thought, ‘Oh no, he’s going to try and beat that train!’ So I was like ‘Go, Johnny, go!’ and I went back home that night and wrote a song called Go Johnny. So we made a tape of it and took it to the RCA place in Houston, and they sent it to New York. The radio manager kept saying, “Robin, they’re messing with your

song.” Then in 1958, Chuck Berry comes along with Go, Johnny Go (Johnny B. Goode). And I have an official copyright on it, and you can hear it on your phone. What they did was take my storyline mine was a hot rodder and theirs was a guitar picker in Louisiana - but the chorus line is almost identical. If you Google Robin Montgomery and Go Johnny, it will come up, because we made a record in 1960. Of course,

everybody thought I copied him (Chuck Berry), but I do have an official copyright and sang it for all the kids around town before then, so they know!

So when did you start writing books? How many have you written? I’m in the middle of publishing my 14th book right now, which is Cradle of the Texas Republic. My first book was History of Montgomery County, which I wrote in 1974. The most recent one is on Conroe. A lot of your books are about Texas, Montgomery County, and the surrounding areas, which you call “the cradle of Texas.” Who is the most interesting person in this area that you’ve encountered in your historical research? J.G.W. Pierson. He was my uncle by marriage. He came over to Pecan Point from Arkansas in 1818 and ended up marrying the sister of my direct ancestor, Andrew Montgomery. Pierson was many things. He was an Indian fighter and eventually sheriff in that area. Then he came down to Texas and his wife Elizabeth died, so he then married into the Cartwright family of Montgomery County. When the Robinson colony started out in Tennessee, Pierson had a commission to go up around the falls of the Brazos and establish what was intended to be the

capital of Texas. In 1935, he served on the “Committee of Five,” which gave birth to the Texas Rangers, and he later formed the town of Independence and a community called High Point, near present-day Stoneham.

What do you think makes Montgomery County unique as a county? It was the county seat of this whole region during the Republic (of Texas). It’s also unique as far as oil – we had the third-largest oilfield in the U.S. during the 1930s. And it’s unique in that it’s come back from the dead … a couple of times! They had two major fires, and then they had yellow fever, but people came back. They had a big fire in 1911, and I mean it was huge, almost wiped out everything. But there was a guy out there with a tent, and it had a flag with a phoenix on it, and it said “We will rise again!” And they came back. It’s got a history of coming back. Conroe is the fastest growing city in the country, and Montgomery County is one of the fastest growing counties. It’s got a good school system, too. When my dad was principal of Conroe High School, it was the biggest high school in Texas. And then, of course, The Woodlands is a miracle – it just popped up out of nowhere!

So tell us about this Cradle of Texas Road event that is coming up in April. Well, it’s going to be put on by the Montgomery Historical Society at the Old Montgomery Community Center and Fernland Park. Our goal is to create a historic trail, and I’ve written nine songs about our region. We’ve already set up a deal with a guy in Conroe to make an album, and I’ve already recorded the songs with him. It’s one of the things we’re going to put on the (phone) app. So when you’re on the tour, you’ll come to a spot where an event happened, and then you can listen to a song about it. The Garden Post By Kim Bius

Know Your Amendments Like a Pro Have you ever stood at the back of the garden center and stared in amazement at seemingly endless shelves of products for soil amendments and fertilizers? They appear to say basically the same thing, but not quite; you are really confused and do not want to read every label. The following is a short run-down of basic amendments:

and water penetration for better root growth and deeper roots. Gypsum is excellent in treating animal urine spots and stopping harm from urea. Apply 1 lb, per 250 sq,’ on lawns or 1 lb, per 100 sq,’ in a garden. This is a definite “go-to product” for creating beds around new homes with thick contractor’s clay around foundation.

Ammonium Sulfate - 21-0-0, Fast release nitrogen for rapid green up and growth in lawns. Ammonium Sulfate makes soils more acidic; especially used on pecan trees and blueberries for fertilization. Pecan trees – Use 1 cup per tree every 30 days in April, May, and June on year 1, and 2 cups per tree on year 2. Mature trees will require 2 cups per every inch of diameter and apply 3-5’ away from the trunk. Blueberry bushes will require 8 tbsp per plant every 30 days beginning in April – June. Apply 18” away from trunk and water in well. Compost piles – Great accelerator for a home compost pile. Apply 1-2 lbs per 10 sq’ and to each 6” layer.

Iron Sulfate – AKA copperas. Iron Sulfate will correct chlorosis or yellowing of the leaves caused by lack of iron. Chlorosis is most often seen in gardenias, azaleas, and nutrient-poor soil. It also aids in creating an acid environment. 4 lbs covers 1000sq or 1 lb per 250 sq’.

Aluminum Sulfate - Creates acid conditions in soil; used often to correct alkaline soil without a heavy dose of nitrogen. Aluminum Sulfate is commonly used to turn hydrangeas a deep periwinkle blue. Apply in March and April for blue hydrangeas in May. Blood Meal – 12-0-0, is a slow-release natural form of nitrogen. Application rate - 2 lbs per 100 sq’ for deep green growth on all outdoor shrubs and trees. It is used especially on pansies or any plant requiring an organic nitrogen base. Bone Meal – 0-10-0, Is a slow-release natural form of phosphorous. Promotes sturdy roots, blooms, and fruit/vegetable yield. Bone Meal stimulates growth and maturity of plants and is most often used on bulbs. Apply 2 tsp. under bulb when planting. Gypsum – Fast-acting gypsum is used to help loosen compacted soil and repair salt damage. Quickly aids in allowing better air circulation

Magnesium Sulfate – Contains a soluble source of magnesium for chlorosis and blossom end rot. Magnesium Sulfate will also create white hydrangeas when color is not desired. Apply at the rate of 1lb per 100 sq’. Nitrate of Soda – Fast-release nitrogen without acid base. Zinc Sulfate - A dry formulation of zinc for application around fruit trees. Corrects deficiency that causes deformity of fruit, prevents and corrects Rosette on pecans. Foliage spray: 1 tablespoon per 3 gallons. Soil treatment: 1-3/4 lbs. per inch of diameter. Zinc sulfate is commonly used to control rosette on pecans…..apply ½ lb for every ½” of trunk, in April, May, and June. Most independent garden centers will use the Fertilome or HI-Yield brands for several reasons. Their products are generically labeled to bring the consumer price down (like generic aspirin), and both brands are made in Texas and formulated for Texas climate and growth. So, the next time you are shopping, you will be armed with all the info needed to be a pro. Many of the HI-Yield products are lower in cost than known brand names, and the above amendments are used when consumers come in with results of a soil sample that needs to amending to grow successfully. Spring has arrived….enjoy the show! Happy Gardening.

You deserve the best!

Dear Gabby Welcome back to the Dear Gabby column! Spring has officially sprung, and the weather is crazy. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me 30,000 times, and you must be a weather person. With all the eating I’ve done this winter, I’m just happy my flip-flops still fit. There’ll be no gardening for me this year. The only thing I’m growing this spring is older (and more irritable), but enough about me. Drop me a line to Dear Gabby at PostcardsLive.com for some cleverly disguised astute advice.

AUTO REPAIR

DEAR GABBY Why, oh why, do I have to continually change the passwords on my computer programs? Some sites will still take the password I had three pets ago, and some seem to be temporary and have to be changed every time I try to access the site. I am not a young person, and I could remember a few, but each program has different password criteria. I know it’s for my own good, but my identity would not be an improvement to anyone’s. Any ideas? BETTER SORRY THAN SAFE

DEAR B S T S Ideas, yes. Solutions, no. All my passwords are protected by senility. I tried using the required letters and numbers and came up with “14days”, but it was two week. Then I tried “beefstew”, but it’s not stroganoff. I had one site with a requirement of eight characters and a number, so I picked Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. Nope, that didn’t work. I finally got so frustrated that I typed in all the naughty words I have ever heard, and guess what? That username was already taken! I gave up. GABBY

CONFIDENTIAL TO “SEPARATE BEDROOMS”: I can relate. However, despite the old saying, “Don’t take your troubles to bed,” I still sleep with Dud. May you be blessed with a home filled with peace, harmony, joy, and love. Peace on Earth and Happy Easter!

Texas Treasures Story by Ruth Fields Submitted Photos

Brenham Maifest Although it was meant to be a secret, Sally Van Dyke wasn’t particularly surprised when the Brenham High School Band arrived in her yard in February 1954 to announce that she had been selected as junior queen of that year’s Brenham Maifest. After all, why else would she have been whisked away under cover of darkness several weeks before to visit the home of a local seamstress? “The lady that was going to make my dress and my train had to get started,” Sally explains. After being announced as junior queen, she recalls riding to the home of the senior queen, who was surprised. “She was in the band, and she had on her band uniform. She changed her clothes and put on a cute little party dress.” Sally has many other Maifest memories. A lifelong resident of Brenham, her family has lived in the town for generations (One ancestor fought in the Battle of San Jacinto and then moved his family to Brenham.). “My dad was the first junior king, and my mother was a senior queen, and both of my children (son and daughter) were king and queen at some time, and all four of my Brenham grandchildren,” Sally says. “We have a lot of stories.” Throughout the decades, Maifest has provided the Van Dyke family with a constant reminder of the goodness of small-town life.

1874, when townspeople begin holding an annual Volksfest (folk festival). In 1881, the festival officially became Maifest. Except for a few years during the two world wars, Maifest has been held every year since 1881. Over the decades, countless Brenham residents—as well as out-of-town visitors—have enjoyed the festival’s small-town charm, warm hospitality, and German flavor. Brenham’s Maifest is often recognized as being the oldest festival in Texas.

King Charles Kenjura, 2019 Junior King of ‘The Great Outdoors’

Celebrating youth For centuries, Germans celebrated spring during the month of May, often by building maypoles, which townspeople danced around, and by holding festivals. When German immigrants settled in Brenham in the 1800s, they brought the ancient tradition of Maifest (pronounced “Mayfest”) with them. Brenham’s Maifest traces its heritage back to

It all begins each January, when the year’s royalty is announced. The junior king and queen are elementary school age, while the senior king and queen are typically seniors in high school, Sally says. The kings and queens then climb aboard a Brenham Fire Department truck for a cruise around town, and the year’s Maifest tradition comes to life once again, promising to provide memories for the younger generation of Brenham residents. Catherine Kenjura remembers her very first Maifest when she was just three years old. “I was what is called a train bearer for the queen,” she says. “I remember being in the parade and waving at people.” She also remembers “moms gushing over us and getting us ready.”

This year’s Maifest will be held Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7, with an early start on Thursday, May 5 for a carnival. “Parents like it, because it’s not enormous. It feels really safe,” Catherine says. The theme for junior participants this year is “Lights, Camera, Action! Maifest 2022”; the theme for senior participants is “And the Award Goes to. . . Maifest 2022.” The themes will influence the festival’s entertainment and parade floats, as well as participants’ costumes. “There will be lots of movie characters,” she says.

She participated at Maifest “from three to 18 and every year in between,” she says. Today, Catherine is the president of the Brenham Maifest Association. She invites Brenham residents, as well as out-of-town visitors, to this unique festival. “It’s a celebration of youth,” she says. “It’s really about kids and watching the community come together and use their talents to put this on,” as Brenham residents become costume designers, script writers, choreographers, float builders and more.

to Sally, Maifest has been held “forever and ever and ever.” There, Catherine says, visitors can eat lunch and sample some “German soda water.” (The Texas chapter of the Zythological Society of North America will provide beer tasting.) Vendors will sell food, including authentic German cuisine, as well as crafts and other wares. The festival will feature German demonstrations, contests and live German music, and visitors might even get to hear the music of Alphorns and accordions. According to Maifest’s website, “Lederhosen is optional; polkas and waltzes are mandatory!” In addition, the Kinder Village will feature games and rides for children, including an antique carousel that is more than 100 years old. And of course, there is the Maipole, based on a Bavarian design that dates back to 1762. A traditional dance around the Maipole kicks off each year’s festivities. During the day on Friday, and again on Saturday, local residents will pool their talents and efforts to set the stage for each evening’s coronation. (The junior coronation is on Friday night; the senior coronation is on Saturday night.) Groups of children of all ages will perform song and dance routines they have

been dutifully rehearsing. As the evenings progress, cover bands will provide music for dancing. On Friday night, Royal Dukes Band will play its blend of high-energy rock, pop and country. On Saturday night, The Common Ground Band will play its self-described “southern rock country blues.”

Maifest Parade 2013

Family and fun Held on the first weekend of May, Maifest typically coincides with Mother’s Day weekend, and is a good opportunity for those who have moved away to return to their roots. Although Sally says Maifest participation has “ebbed and flowed” over the years, the tradition continues. “It is always fun,” she says. Past kings and queens are encouraged to attend and are recognized when they return to

Maifest. One year, she says, dresses of former senior queens were modeled by girls who participated in Maifest that year. Sally has seen Maifest evolve over the years. For example, in the past, talented local seamstresses made costumes for children in keeping with the year’s themes, but today, many costumes are ordered online. In addition, Serenade (the announcement of the year’s kings and queens) is now held at a local park’s amphitheater instead of the front yards of the newly-recognized royalty. However, many traditions remain at this annual event. Sally appreciates the emphasis that is placed on the young people of the community. She remembers years when there were hundreds of participants, yet “every child walked down the walkway; every child was introduced by name and took a bow,” she says. “To me, that is one of the special things about Maifest during the years. How many people in the U.S. get to ride a float and go through town and wave? How many get to walk in a coronation and get individually introduced?” For more information about Brenham Maifest, visit brenhammaifest.com.

Health Matters www.drjimshealthtips.com By James W. Jones, MD, PhD, MHA

There Should be Elation about Motivation Providing Salvation To achieve and better yourself in life requires motivation. Motivation is the mindset so enough willpower is gathered to set about achieving a desired result. My mother repeatedly issued the challenge that “if you don’t continually better yourself in this life, you’ll wind up as sorry as dirt,” and I most assuredly did not want that to happen. MOTIVATING! As Dolly Parton aptly proclaimed, “If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.” Mark Twain acknowledged, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” When achieving any goal, getting started seems to be a stopping block for many of us, and MOTIVATION is the means to begin. Motivation is prompted by perception of a need. Andrew Maslow proposed a hierarchy of human needs grouped by significance as Physiological (hunger, thirst), then Safety, then Social (love, friendship), then Self-esteem, and next Self-actualization (achievement of full

potential). What is there in your life that you want utmost to enhance? What aspect of your routine of living could/ should be improved? When you reconsider your full potential, have you reached it? Most of us can always stretch our abilities a bit, especially if we get into the habit of cultivating betterments in our lifestyles. THINK! In what aspect of your life have you settled into a drab “do as little as possible” attitude? Before I retired (and especially even before Covid), my mindset was to use time well to accomplish and (most important) avoid wasting time. To be successful in achieving goals, correct methodology must be adhered to, and I obtained the right way from the ideas of others. Consider a single feasible goal that can be divided into smaller tasks. Before starting, consider the benefits of achieving your goal. Bring family, friends, or better both for support into your

confidence about your plans, and seek their backing. Set reminders and times to complete each task. The quality of our lives is reflected by our principles, values, and goals--which are determinants of what we hold significant. COME ON QUALITY. My mother recurrently told me, “What determines how successful you are in life as a person is how many people you help.” Naturally, we wish to make our lives and the lives of our loved ones better as we continue, but how about others as well? I work to write Health Matters to do so, but there are nearly countless ways others’ lives can be helped. There is no doubt a great deal more gratification in our lives when we benefit others than when we benefit ourselves. The Golden Rule provides guidance that if we treat others as we would wish to be treated, wholesome self-satisfaction is a gain that really happens, and a feeling of living the GOOD LIFE is realized.

From the Mouths of Babes...

Physical therapy keeps you

moving.

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, ‘What does love mean?’ The answers they got were broader, deeper, and more profound than anyone could have ever imagined!

‘During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn’t scared anymore.’ Cindy - age 8

‘My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don’t see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.’ Clare - age 6 ‘Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.’ Elaine - age 5

‘Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford.’ Chris - age 7

‘Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.’ Mary Ann - age 4

‘I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.’ Lauren - age 4

Together, we can... v improve your mobility and motion v reduce pain without medication in many cases v improve surgical outcomes

‘When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.’ (what an image!) Karen - age 7

‘Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.’ Terri - age 4

And the final one: The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, ‘Nothing, I just helped him cry.’

I quickly discovered the SBDC and contacted them. They helped me with many aspects of the business including incorporation, loan options, potential regulations, and marketing and advertising efforts. Without the SBDC, my journey would have been a lot more difficult. Most importantly, it’s nice to have someone that you can reach out to with any questions at any time. This helps wade through all the conflicting information online and cut right to the solution. The SBDC is truly an invaluable resource and anyone who is considering opening a small business should reach out and obtain the help necessary in order to succeed. “

They helped us to navigate the application process and provided tips and resources needed at the time. I also used their services for help with our funeral home website and social media efforts. The assistance I received was invaluable. Not only did the advisor offer helpful insight, I was introduced to industry specialists who personally reviewed my website and my social media posts, walking me through the steps to improve and enhance my efforts. The results have been tremendous! When we were asked to participate in a business marketing project with advanced students at Sam Houston State University, we gladly accepted. The student team prepared a strategic analysis and marketing plan for us to implement. Every chance I get, I refer the SHSU SBDC to small business owners.”

Cornerstone Development Group Jascha Patton and Jeff Kastendieck Jascha Patton and Jeff Kastendieck initially set out to become developers, but seeing a bigger need they formed Cornerstone Development Group to help people achieve their own commercial real estate development dreams. Jascha and Jeff realized this was a need that was not being met and consequently there was a group of people who were not receiving the support they needed. These were people who had worked hard and wanted to bet on themselves, dreaming of building a retail strip center or office building, but they lacked the time and expertise necessary for success. Jascha and Jeff created Cornerstone to meet this need through informing and guiding critical decisions and managing the complex and time-consuming engagements with banks, architects, real estate agents, and builders, etc.

“SHSU SBDC has proven to be an invaluable resource behind starting our business, Cornerstone Development Group,” said Patton. We have been working with them for over a year now and they have helped with everything from strategic market analysis and business planning to marketing and employee benefits. What has been even more helpful than the multitude of resources though, has been the team behind the scenes at SBDC. They have been very helpful guiding conversations and helping us think through difficult decisions.”

Willis Urgent Care Brian and Jennifer Kempton Willis Urgent Care is a dream come true for owners Brian and Jennifer Kempton. Brian is a Board certified Emergency Physician with over 30 years experience in the Emergency Room. Jennifer, a former teacher, and school counselor, is the office manager. Together they bring a unique blend of caring, compassion and commitment to the clinic. With patient care at the core of training and values, the staff at Willis Urgent Care is determined that every patient get expert care, be treated promptly with the utmost quality and compassion, and leave on their path to better health. “Before we opened, I took a class on QuickBooks at SBDC and learned valuable skills that taught me bookkeeping and how to manage payroll,” Kempton said. SBDC also helped immensely in marketing advice and provided an expert in web design who gave great tips on our web page and marketing. At one point we were having trouble with our bank loan, and the center director worked very hard in getting us in contact with the right people to help us secure a better loan. We opened during the pandemic, and our advisor was always calling to check on us to see if we needed any help—whether it be loan forgiveness, marketing, or employee retention. Thankfully we are approaching our second year as small business owners, and we could not have made it without the guidance of the SHSU SBDC!” April 2022 | Postcards Magazine: Lake Conroe Edition

Ward Furniture & Flooring began in 1944 as Hardy Furniture. David Ward began working with his grandfather and father in their family business when he was in junior high and remembers the small-town atmosphere of Huntsville. David’s dad, Norman Ward, purchased the business from his father-in-law in the 60s, and the business name was changed to Ward Furniture. David remembers learning two important lessons early: 1) how important customer service is; and 2) how important every customer is! These lessons became the foundation for the way Ward Furniture did business, and they are still a priority today.

2020 and 2021 were tough years for many. Clyde Tauriainen, founder of Easco Air Conditioning, is no stranger to hard times. He started Easco Air Conditioning during an oil slump in the winter of 1984. Clyde wanted to provide better HVAC service with a focus on Indoor Air Quality and Comfort solutions in an industry littered with marginal service. Clyde and his wife wanted to raise their family in the country and fell in love with Walker and Montgomery counties. He started a second air conditioning company in Walker County. Decades later, Easco is still providing air conditioning and heating service for residential and commercial customers. Easco provides service to Walker, Montgomery, and the surrounding counties. With a laser focus on dependable service, humidity control, and indoor air quality, the company has adapted to the times. The second generation works right alongside the founder! Son Caleb earned his class “A” mechanical license and is our Operations Manager. Son Joshua, also licensed, is the Comfort Advisor and custom designs air conditioning and heating systems for residential customers. Daughters Eden and Faith assist in the office. For local, dependable service, with decades of knowledge... put your mind at ease...call Easco! 936-539-COLD!

Hamm’s Flooring is a same-family owned and operated business in Conroe since 1977. We have a solution for all of your flooring needs. We pride ourselves on our service and go out of our way to make sure our customers’ needs are met. Relationships matter to us. When Jack Hamm started this business, he was an experienced paint salesman. It was an easy transition for him to utilize the skills he honed while in the paint business as he opened the family carpet store. Shortly after Jack and Jaynell opened the store, it became apparent that customers not only enjoyed our service and competitive prices, but also started telling their friends about their experience with Hamm’s Flooring. Word spread and has continued to do so for more than 44 years. Hamm’s is now a third-generation family business and continues to grow. Customers are investing in the product and also investing in our knowledge. We’ve never been a high pressure sales company. We have, however, been the top flooring company locally with nothing but 5-Star Reviews. We invite you to come on down and meet us. My name is Keith McLeod of Conroe, Texas. I service the Conroe/ Montgomery/Woodlands area, building my customer base with the goal of being that “home-town” guy clients and community trust. Integrity fuels my passion for helping others achieve exactly what they want in their homes—a fair price with quality work well done. I enjoy the opportunity to help people make their home better as honestly and personably as I can. Highlander Roofing and Renovations can help with all your basic home needs--decks, fences, roofs, remodeling, painting, or a project you’ve been waiting for the right time to start. I really do a little bit of everything! Challenges keep me interested, and my love for people is embodied in my visits and interactions with customers. I started working in construction during high school. I began Highlander Roofing about 6 years ago, only doing roofing, and have since added the renovations expertise. My many years of experience have allowed me to develop an eye for issues and potential problems, even if they are unrelated to the work I am doing for the client. I keep my customers’ best interests at heart.

My name is D.L. Shiver, and I own Huntsville Pest Control. I purchased the company in January of 2018. I have been licensed for 13 years, and my family has been in pest control for over 36 years. Huntsville Pest Control has served Huntsville and surrounding areas for over 40 years. We are licensed for general pest, termite, mosquito services, lawn and ornamental, and weed. I have an amazing, dedicated staff with graduates from SHSU, UT Arlington, and A&M. We always back up our services, so if you ever have a problem after we treat your home, call us and we will make it right! When you need a name in pest control you can trust, contact Huntsville Pest Control.

We offer weekly, bi-weekly, bi-monthly, quarterly, or 6-month maintenance. It depends on the customers’ needs. Most of our customers are on a quarterly plan. This means that we’ll call you around the 90 days to remind you that your house is due for a new treatment, but, if you have problems before then, we’ll come out right away and take care of the problem.

Stephen Craig, D.L. Shiver, and Alexander Neff

I am a graduate of Sam Houston State University with a BA in Business Administration. My experience as a marketing executive launched me into a successful 33-year career in real estate in the Walker, Montgomery, and Harris County areas. I have worked every aspect of the industry representing sellers, buyers, and investors in both residential and commercial markets. My clients appreciate and benefit from my expertise and my methods. One advantage is a program I implemented when joining Coldwell Banker Realty back in 2018, which allows receipt of up to a $7,000 cash bonus when buying or selling residential property. This is a program only I can offer and is one of the things that sets me apart. I also create a custom marketing plan for each individual property, designed to produce a timely sale at a premium price. For many first-time home buyers, the process can be intimidating and overwhelming (just as it can be for those downsizing and purchasing their last home). I use my years of experience to help make each of these transitions a pleasant one for my client. I view each client as a personal friend and negotiate hard to make THEIR dream a reality.

We are Blake and Donna Cox, residents of Willis. Blake spent his career in the oil industry, and Donna is a retired university professor. We started our roll-off dumpster company because we weren’t quite ready to retire, so we started a company where we could work together and still have time to see the grandkids when we wanted to. We’ve been in business since November of 2020, and we are the only two employees. We saw a need for renting smaller dumpsters to our neighbors who may have a need to dispose of household trash or residential construction demo materials. We are proud of our spiffy, 15-yard dumpsters and have been blessed to work for so many lovely people in our community and surrounding area.

Roy’s Air Conditioning, Inc. in Conroe began in the late 1970s as a small shop specializing in the repair and installation of air conditioners, but now meets the most demanding of air conditioning and heating challenges. The company originated with Roy Gore, according to owner Paul Lamp, who went to work for Gore in 1982 while still in high school. From its humble beginnings, the company has grown not only in size, but also in its capabilities and service area. The company employs multiple technicians and a dispatcher, and always keeps a technician on 24hour call. Lamp sometimes fills that role. “I’m not asking my guys to do something I’m not willing to do,” he says.

As an award-winning and licensed interior designer, I have spent over 30 years serving the Dallas/Fort Worth area. From traditional to modern, small to large-scale remodels or new construction, I’m able to reflect the style and vision of my clients. I tailor each project based on your needs, understanding each project is different (and so is the budget), which is why my process varies. With an instinctive eye for detail, I curate designs that encapsulate the client’s desires and dreams. As a new Huntsville resident, I am excited for the opportunity to meet and work with the people in the community. I am continuing to serve the Dallas/ Fort Worth area and now extending to Houston and surrounding areas. When I’m not serving my clients, I love to incorporate my creativity in my garden, enjoy the quiet outdoors in the country, and spend time with my precious granddaughter, Allie.

Giggles & Grins Q: “Imagine you’re in a room with no windows and no doors; how do you get out?” A: “Stop imagining.”

Partners Submitted by: Brian B Smith, CFP , Bryan M Masten, CFP® & Riley W. Smith ®

A guy is driving around the backwoods of Montana and sees a sign in front of a broken-down shanty-style house: ‘Talking Dog For Sale.’ He rings the bell, and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador Retriever sitting there. ”You talk?” he asks. ”Yep,” the Lab replies. After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says, ”So, what’s your story?” The Lab looks up and says, ”Well, I discovered I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all, they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping, I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running... but the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger, so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.” The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. ”Ten dollars,” the guy says. ”Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?” ”Because he’s a liar. He’s never been out of the yard.”

Life is all about Perspective Have you ever heard the saying “It is hard to see the forest for the trees”? This is a perfect description of the problem many people face when trying to invest. How do you pay attention to your investments on a regular basis and yet stay focused on the long-term goals you have set for your family? In today’s world, we are constantly bombarded with news on every subject imaginable. Often it feels as though the world is falling apart. We have inflation, pandemics, and wars. These news items dominate our TV, smartphones, and other devices. Daily news impacts our financial markets, but not always in the way we would expect. How is an investor to see the forest through all the trees (or news)? How are you to stay focused on the bigger picture? First, work with someone you trust to identify those long-term goals and help you stay on track. It is difficult to leave your emotions out of your investments. Having someone help you look at things objectively can help. By having goals identified, you are more likely to see the long-term perspective as opposed to the news of the day. Second, understand the process. If working with someone to invest on your behalf, ask about the process they use to identify investments and what would prompt changes to those investments. Many times, negative news in one area could be very positive in another. How do they adapt to changes and attempt to position investments for the best outcome? In addition, how does this process account for you as an individual and adapt to you as your life changes? It is important that you understand a process exists and you are confident in how they manage it for you and your family. Third, stress test your plans. Not all plans work out exactly as they are intended. It is important to talk about your goals and progress regularly. While having those discussion, it may be beneficial to look at events that could negatively impact your progress. What if market returns are lower than your projections for an extended period or life changes force additional expenses? These questions will affect your probability of success and adjustments may be necessary. Take some time to look at the forest. The bigger picture may provide some peace in a world full of chaos. If you need some help with your bigger financial picture, we would be honored to help. At Global Financial Partners we have been helping clients like you for over 35 years.

Business Focus Story by Rosa Coss Photos by Tom Miller

Veterinary Hospital of New Waverly 50 Postcards Magazine: Lake Conroe Edition | April 2022

Drs. Kim and Steve VanWagner are owners of the Veterinary Hospital of New Waverly, located at 455 West State Highway 150 in New Waverly, Texas. Both graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Kim is a small animal practitioner, and a member of both the American Veterinary Medical Association and Texas Veterinary Medical Association. Her special interests include critical care and internal medicine. Dr. Steve is an equine practitioner, and a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and Texas Veterinary Medical Association. His interest reaches all areas, ranging from reproduction and lameness, to business management. Dr. Kim and Dr. Steve, as everyone knows them, met in veterinary school. He was starting his first year, while she was in her second year. Dr. Steve started veterinary school later to complete his master’s degree in equine reproduction at Colorado State University. They married three years later. After graduating from vet school, they worked together at Big Thicket Veterinary Hospital, a mixed animal practice in Tarkington. Then, at the beginning of 2001, they moved to San Antonio, where Dr. Steve was mentored by, and worked with, a boarded equine surgeon at Hill Country Equine in Boerne. In the meantime, Dr. Kim worked at Fredericksburg Road Animal Hospital, an exclusive small animal practice in San Antonio. When their family started to grow with the birth of their first child, they decided to move back home to be closer to the grandparents. Prior to establishing their clinic in New Waverly, the VanWagners had considered buying the practice in Tarkington where they had started their career path. but in the end, “it wasn’t what God wanted us to do,” said Dr. Kim. They even considered buying land and building a new practice in Cleveland, “but once again, God shut that door. Looking back now, we are thankful for that,” said Dr. Kim. New Waverly was never on their radar for possible locations to open up a vet clinic, but a friend of theirs from Coldspring was building a carwash there at the time, and kept telling them, “Y’all need to put a clinic in New Waverly.” He would say, “The area is growing, and you need to ‘hang a shingle’ there.” So, in 2002, they did a demographic study of the area and found that he was right, growth was definitely predicted. They still had reservations, but after prayerful consideration, they decided to take a leap of faith. They bought the property, and in October 2003, they opened the doors of the Veterinary Hospital of New Waverly. At first, “we actually lived in it,” said Dr. Kim. “In fact, the master bedroom was right where we are sitting.” They started off with only 4 staff members: the 2 doctors, her motherin-law, and a technician friend. Over the years, a couple of family members have helped work and grow the practice; today, they have 22 employees, and retain a close knit “family” environment. The Veterinary Hospital of New Waverly currently employs 3 LVTs (Licensed Veterinary Technicians), 1 working towards licensure that is also Fear Free certified, and 2 level II CVAs (Certified Veterinary Assistants)-1 being a certified Dental Technician and Ambassador, with others going through the CVA program. The hospital takes pride in offering a training facility for many students. They host several CVA students a year from the

local area high schools, 4-H programs, and online programs. Dr. Kim is currently in the process of helping New Waverly High School implement the CVA program for their students. In addition, they offer college students the opportunity to gain the hours needed to apply to veterinary schools, while veterinary students come to gain hands-on experiences and mentoring. Still others come to shadow and volunteer for other reasons. Some of the services offered at VHNW include: immunization and wellness care, extensive dental care, emergency and critical care, soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries, hospice and euthanasia services, internal medicine, microchipping, laser therapy,

pain management, radiology, and so much more! They primarily care for small animals and equine, but also a handful of exotics and food animals as they enjoy helping the local 4-H and FFA students. (In the past, patients were referred to specialty hospitals for cases such as major knee repairs, but now, clients can

pay almost half the cost since it can be done in-house.); 3) Dr. Oscar Ramirez, a boardcertified veterinary radiologist, with Southeast Texas Veterinary Imaging Services, has been coming for several years, and now comes every 2 weeks to perform ultrasounds, review radiographs, and provide consultations; 4) A certified veterinary acupuncturist provides care for various conditions; 5) Chiropractic care for both animals and humans are provided by Doc Jackie Doval, the first licensed Doctor of Chiropractic in Texas to be certified in Animal Chiropractic by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association. “We are very blessed to be working with all these incredible specialists. Vet Connect: By Steve VanWagner, D.V.M.

Influenza in Horses Influenza (EIV) in horses is highly contagious, and the virus spreads rapidly through groups of horses in aerosolized droplets dispersed by coughing. The severity of clinical signs depends on the degree of existing immunity, among other factors. The disease is sporadically introduced to herds or barns by an infected horse or by contact with virus-contaminated feed and water buckets, tack, grooming equipment, and even clothing. Horses that are partially immune can become sub-clinically infected and shed virus. Immunity following vaccination with inactivated influenza vaccines can be short-

lived, allowing recently vaccinated horses to become infected and shed virus, thereby contributing to maintenance and spread of infection within the equine population. For these reasons, only vaccines of proven efficacy should be selected for use. Equine influenza, caused by the H3N8 orthomyxovirus, equine influenza A type 2 (A/equine 2), is one of the most common infectious diseases of the respiratory tract of horses. To date, the most important factors associated with increased risk of infection have been identified as: 1. Age: Horses 1 to 5 years old are more susceptible, although a recent study demonstrated an increased incidence of EIV

among older horses (6-10 years old) and horses previously vaccinated against EIV within the previous 12 months. These results help support the belief that immunity to EIV can be overwhelmed in horses frequently exposed at shows or similar athletic events or when the current strains of EIV circulating within a given horse population become antigenically distinct from the vaccine strains contributing to incomplete clinical protection. 2. Frequent contact with large numbers of horses. The clinical signs of fully susceptible horses include: fever, depression, harsh dry couch, loss of appetite, nasal discharge, and muscle pain and/or weakness. Though clinical signs may resolve within 7-14 days in uncommlicated cases, it can take up to 6 months to completely eliminate the disease. A diagnosis of influenza A used to be presumed based on history, clinical presentation, and by ruling out other causes of fever, cough, and nasal discharge (i.e., strangles, bacterial pneumonia). Now experts recommend using the available technology to identify the exact cause of the infection. Accurately diagnosing the cause of respiratory disease is an important step in implementing proper management practices and controlling disease spread. An accurate diagnosis also is important for the industry to determine efficacy of the existing vaccines. Equine influenza infections are generally self-limiting, and no specific treatment exists. Owners should isolate affected horses from healthy horses and institute general supportive care. This includes encouraging the horse to eat and drink and administering non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as prescribed by a veterinarian to control high fevers. Resting affected horses (typically one week for every day of fever) is imperative. Contact your veterinarian if your horse shows any symptoms consistent with EIV. They can help to control symptoms and possibly reduce the risk of any secondary infections becoming severe.

Mustard Seed Moments by Linda W. Perkins

In God We Can Trust The first year I was in church choir, I had an opportunity to be a part of the Easter production. Everything was going great until we got to the dress rehearsal. As I watched the crucifixion scene, I choked up. The sight of Jesus dying on the cross was too much for my heart to take. I was broken, more aware than ever of Jesus’ love for me. I was also angry at those shouting to crucify Jesus. Oh, if they only realized who He was! “Why, God, why?” I cried silently. “Why couldn’t there have been another way?” Just as the disciples were angry and scared when Jesus was arrested, and Mary wept at the sight of her son on the cross, we often only see what is in front of us, rather than the big picture that God sees. Just as He knew Jesus would be resurrected, God knows the outcome of everything we face as well. And, in the midst of it all, He promises to be right by our side. When we are faced with tragedies or frightening circumstances, it is easy to trust only in our feelings of anger, fear, and grief. Easter, however, reminds us that God has a plan even when we can’t see it. We would be wise, then, to trust God when He tells us in His Word, “Do not be afraid. Do not be terrified.”

May we be like David, who in Psalms said of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.” We can trust not in what we see, but in who He is. “I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” - Psalm 91:2 “So do not be afraid. I am with you. Do not be terrified. I am your God. I will make you strong and help you. I will hold you safe in my hands. I always do what is right.” - Isaiah 41:10 “For we live by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
