t takes a village,” but in this case, it takes a board of directors, a beautiful city and much more to organize a world-class event. Welcome to the 59th Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival! As your co-presidents, Amy Thrasher and I (Monte Livermore) have not only the pleasure of working together, but also the pleasure of working with all those it takes to present this event. Amy’s background is in accounting and marketing, and mine is in horticulture. Though very different, we seem to complement one another in that our common goal is to produce a memorable weekend for artists and attendees alike. We should begin by thanking our Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival board of directors, without whom none of this could happen. There are approximately 40 board members, who tirelessly dedicate their efforts. And there are our festival volunteers, who fill in the gaps to allow the event to flow smoothly. And we can’t forget our city officials and officers, who facilitate the organizational and security aspects of staging one of the biggest festivals in the Southeast. And, of course, we thank our sponsors, who allow us to achieve a greater level of success. To all of these and more, we owe our sincere gratitude and appreciation. The thrust of the festival is, of course, art. We thank our independent judges who diligently select the finest artists in the nation and the world to bring their creations to Winter Park. While enjoying the art in Central Park, don’t overlook the Children’s Workshop, supported by our local museums, and the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, which features work by students from Orange County elementary, middle and high schools. And how about the music! There’s a Friday night jazz concert and a variety of entertainment presented

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. The festival debuted in March 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together. It’s produced by an all-volunteer board and draws more than 350,000 visitors each year. More than 1,100 artists from around the world applied for this year’s festival. An independent panel of three judges selected the 225 artists exhibiting their works. The festival consistently ranks as one of the top juried fine-art shows in the country. Recent accolades include a No. 3 ranking in Art Fair Calendar’s “2017 Best Art Fairs” and a “Top 10 Fine Art Shows” listing by Art Fair Source Book. The festival also ranks in Sunshine Artist Magazine’s “Top 100.”

The festival features a wide variety of fine arts and crafts in the following categories: Clay, Digital Art, Drawings & Pastels, Fiber, Glass, Graphics & Printmaking, Jewelry, Leather, Metal, Mixed Media/2D, Mixed Media/3D, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Watercolor and Wood. There is also a category for Emerging Artists.
AWARDS
Artists compete for 63 awards totaling $72,500. The Best of Show winner is purchased for $10,000 by the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Board and donated to the City of Winter Park. Previous Best of Show winners are on permanent display at the Winter Park Public Library. A $5,000 “Art of Philanthropy” Purchase Award is sponsored by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation. A $2,500 “Distinguished Work of Art” Award is presented through the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. There are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 each and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 each.
MUSIC, ENTERTAINMENT & FOOD
Throughout the festival’s three-day run, you’ll find free entertainment presented on the main stage located in north Central Park. The music begins with a highprofile concert on Friday night. This year’s entertainers will be Eric Darius, Nick Colionne, Matt Marshak and Selina Albright. Attendees will find a variety of food and refreshments located along Morse Boulevard and throughout the park, plus a Wine & Beer Garden located in south Central Park.
MERCHANDISE
Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival T-shirts and other memorabilia are available at three merchandise sales tents. The tents are located at the south entrance (Park Avenue and New England Avenue), at the center intersection (Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue), and at the north entrance (Park Avenue and Garfield Avenue). This year’s poster artist, Don DeWitt, created a vibrantly colored poster that resembles a classic orange crate label. The poster is an homage to the region’s citrusgrowing heritage and nod to the Winter Park Farmers’ Market of today. Posters will be sold at the three large merchandise tents. A vintage merchandise tent will be located next to the festival headquarters at Park Avenue and Morse Boulevard. After the festival is over, you can still purchase this year’s poster and those from past years by visiting our website at wpsaf.org.
FAMILY FUN
Youngsters can create their own artwork at the Children’s Workshop Village. Easel painting is very popular, and local art centers and museums feature a variety of fun, hands-on art activities for children. Admission is free, and participants may take home their creations. The Children’s Workshop Village hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Easel painting is from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT
The place to discover the talented artists of the next generation is at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, where artwork by thousands of Orange County students is on display. (See map, pages 12-13.) The creativity and level of expertise displayed by these young artists will delight and amaze you. Be sure to check out this wonderful exhibit.
COMPLIMENTARY BIKE VALET
The Winter Park Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Board provides a free bike valet service during the festival. It’s located on Morse Boulevard across the street from the Amtrak Station parking lot. (See map, pages 12-13.)

JUDGES These Noted Experts Pick the Best of the Best
J
udges for The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival are selected annually for their in-depth knowledge and experience in multiple art media. In October, they reviewed digital images from all applicants and selected the exhibiting artists. Other artists were placed on wait lists. During the festival, the same panel will review exhibits to determine which artists will be considered for awards. After a booth is selected, the artist is responsible for choosing one representative piece for consideration. Winners are determined by the judges on Saturday. Awards include the Best of Show, the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Award and the Morse Museum Award.
ELAINE D. GUSTAFSON, PH.D.
Elaine D. Gustafson is the curator of collections at the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where in 2009 she was production manager of the first significant catalog featuring the museum’s collection. More recent projects have included overseeing renovation of the museum’s storage vault, which was funded in part by a $150,000 Institute of Museum and Library Services grant that she co-authored. She has also strengthened the museum’s photography collection, and recently organized Lucinda Devlin: Sightlines, the first retrospective of this significant American photographer’s work. Gustafson collaborates with the university’s faculty and students to develop exhibitions related to upcoming course curricula. She holds a B.A. in the history of art from Wheaton College and an M.A. in the history of art from Brown University. She has completed coursework toward her doctorate, also at Brown University. Gustafson was director of exhibitions and collections and curator of contemporary art at the Tampa Museum of Art for 10 years. She has also worked for the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Worcester Art Museum and the Museum of Art at the Rhode Island School of Design. In addition, she has published numerous scholarly articles and served as an adjunct professor at Auburn University, Troy State University, and, presently, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
PHILLIP SHORE, M.F.A.
Phillip Shore is an artist and an educator who divides his time between Michigan and Texas. Shore earned an M.F.A. from the University of Notre Dame and a B.F.A. from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Over his 20-year career, Shore has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. He was also invited to attend an international sculpture symposium in the Republic of Georgia. logical artifacts, and by the relationship between humans and the environment. Shore has received grants from the State of Michigan and Arts America. Most recently, he was the recipient of the Haggar Scholar Award through the University of Dallas. Shore is represented by Craighead Green Gallery in Dallas, and by Sue Greenwood Fine Art in Laguna Beach, California. His work is in many public and private collections, including Purdue University; the City of Fort Smith, Arkansas; Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, a Dallas-based law firm; and the Rustavi International Sculpture Park, Rustavi, Republic of Georgia.
LOUIS ZONA, PH.D.
Louis A. Zona is professor emeritus and art history director at the Butler Institute of American Art. The institute is affiliated with Zona’s undergraduate alma mater, Youngstown State University, where he has served on the art faculty since 1966. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969, followed by a doctoral degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 1973. Zona has twice received the YSU Distinguished Professor Award, and was elected chairman of the art department in 1976. He was named executive director of the institute in 1981, and has devoted his tenure to expanding and modernizing the facility, creating two branch locations and expanding its collections and outreach initiatives. Under Zona’s leadership, the Beecher Center — a joint venture of the institute and YSU that focuses on art and technology — was dedicated in 2000. Zona has received many national honors, including the Gari Melchers Medal — presented in 1996 by the Artist’s Fellowship of New York City — for his outstanding contribution to American art and culture. He’s the author of numerous articles on art and art history, including “Nassos Daphnis: Color and Form,” and “A Nation’s Legacy: The Mid-Twentieth Century in American Art.” Zona is a major contributor to the recent publication, Master Paintings from the Butler Institute of American Art, a catalog of the institute’s permanent collection.

on DeWitt is a Florida native, born in Winter Park. He attended St. Charles School and Bishop Moore High School, then graduated from Flagler College in St. Augustine, where he majored in fine art and graphic design. Back in Central Florida, he enjoyed a 20-year career working in schoolbook publishing. Beginning as a designer and paste-up artist, he eventually became an art director, helping to produce award-winning literature anthologies. A favorite part of the publishing process was designing schoolbook covers, for which DeWitt was recognized with awards from both the New York Book Show and the New England Book Show. As a local, DeWitt always loved The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. Seeing artists being celebrated and successful was inspiring, he says, and discovering that there are so many ways to channel creativity was meaningful to a young person finding his way in a pre-internet world. Beyond the obvious fun of an art festival, he adds, such events reinforce the fact that art can be an important outlet for all kinds of communication — which he believes is an important lesson for a new generation in a quickly evolving and sometimes confusing world. Forever grateful for having had a lifetime of support for his artistic expression from his parents, family and husband, DeWitt hopes all adults recognize and help nurture imagination and creativity in children. “It’s a valuable way to process feelings of all kinds,” he says. This year’s poster is a throwback to vintage fruit crate labels from the citrus farms that were once numerous in Central Florida. It’s also a nod to the Saturday Winter Park Farmers’ Market, located around the old train depot on New England Avenue in Winter Park. There, fresh fruit, vegetables, plants as well as other handmade treats have been available for nearly 40 years. DeWitt says that designing the poster this year has been a great honor, and a way for him to show affection for the City of Winter Park — which has been an important part of his family’s history. 20 59TH WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has proudly showcased the artists and art programs of Orange County public and private schools since the first festival in 1960. The skillful and unique works of art created by these talented students will amaze you. The exhibit is named in memory of Leon Theodore, an inspirational teacher, artist and former member and president of the festival board. The student displays are located across the railroad tracks opposite the stage. This year’s panel of judges includes Kevin Abbott, a painter and sculptor from Sanford who specializes in mid-century/New York School inspired art, Debe Abbott, an award-winning artist working in pastel, acrylic, oil and mixed media, and Lynn Whipple, a mixed-media artist known for her whimsical creations and “Big Bold Blooms” series. n 1969, an annual tradition was started when the Best of Show work of art was purchased by the Festival Committee for $250 and presented to the City of Winter Park as an expression of appreciation for their support and the many services provided. The tradition continues, and the prize money has steadily increased over the years. This year’s Best of Show will be purchased from the artist for $10,000. A collection of Best of Show pieces from years past is on display at the Winter Park Public Library, where you can take a self-guided tour with the help of a brochure available at the front desk. Farmers’ Market Has a Juicy History
he Winter Park Farmers’ Market, one of the city’s most important historical landmarks, shares a common thread with this year’s nostalgic official festival poster — citrus. Built in 1927 at 200 West New England Avenue, the location of what’s now widely considered to be the finest farmers’ market in Central Florida was once a railroad freight depot. In those days, Winter Park was a central shipping point for citrus and other local commodities. The Atlantic Coastline Railroad bought the property in 1930, but by 1977 the building was vacant and in disrepair. The city, hoping to use the property for parking, condemned it in 1978. But a private company had already put down a deposit on a $166,000 purchase offer, sparking a legal battle that ultimately allowed the city to purchase the property in June of that year for $212,500. What has been a railroad depot built in the 1920s is now home But rather than tear down the building and create a to Winter Park’s popular Farmers’ Market. parking lot, the city adopted a proposal by Commissioner Jerome Donnelly to open a farmers’ market. More than 10,000 people showed up on opening weekend in 1979. In 1991, the depot was restored for use as an event space, using funds from a bond issue and donations from various civic organizations. The Winter Park History Museum moved into the north end of the depot after the improvements were complete. Along with the fresh produce, plants and bakery items, you might still find some citrus for sale there on any given Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. — except, of course, on festival weekend.

The Intersection of Jazz and Blues
s always, The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is presenting a dynamic lineup of entertainers, combining national headliners as well as locally based groups and performers on the stage in north Central Park. The festivities kick off Friday, March 16, with a Cheiron Records Showcase featuring a handful of up-andcoming young soloists produced by Central Florida’s boy band guru Tim Coons, who was the original producer for the Backstreet Boys and has worked with NSYNC and a roster of other top-selling pop artists. Then, from 7:30-9 p.m., prepare to be blown away by Jazz Gets the Blues, featuring a powerhouse foursome including, in alphabetical order, Selina Albright, Nick Colionne, Eric Darius and Matt Marshak.

Selina Albright is a soulful singer-songwriter with versatility that comes from years of listening to a variety of musical genres in a variety of languages. Albright has performed all over the world with such artists as George Duke, Joe Sample, David Benoit, Dave Koz, David Sanborn, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, Candy Dulfer, Hugh Masekala, Chaka Khan and The Temptations as well as with her father, legendary jazz saxophonist Gerald Albright.

THE CITRUS SINGERS
The Citrus Singers are the premiere chorus of the Girl Scouts of Central Florida. It’s a group of 35 scouts who come from troupes throughout Central Florida to perform together. You may have seen them at the Amway Arena, the Citrus Bowl, Universal Studios, Lake Eola, Crane’s Roost or the Orlando Museum of Art. Or, you may have seen their highly viewed music video on YouTube, a Meghan Trainor parody of “All About That Badge.” The chorus performs uplifting, positive pop as well as parody and patriotic songs. It’s led by musical director Susie Reale. The Citrus Singers take the stage on Saturday, March 17 from 12:30-1:15 p.m.
BROWN BAG BRASS BAND
One of Central Florida’s hottest live acts, Brown Bag Brass Band has been dubbed — by themselves — as “Orlando’s official party band.” If you’ve seen them play, it’s hard to argue otherwise. What started as a pickup band covering a lastminute Mardi Gras gig soon began delivering a horn-driven tour de force, performing throughout Central Florida and beyond. Since then, “the b4” has firmly established itself an integral part of the live scene, characterized by its “loud, fast, good-time party music.” The group will perform on Friday, March 16, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

CHRIS CORTEZ AND THE BLUE BAMBOO ALL STARS
WUCF 89.9, Jazz and More will present Chris Cortez and the Blue Bamboo All Stars with special guest Ben Wendel to close out the festival on Sunday afternoon. Cortez is a guitarist, singer, producer, audio engineer and videographer who grew up in Orlando — but his career has taken him around the world. He created Blue Bamboo Music, an independent jazz record label, in 1986. In 2015, he returned to Central Florida to open the Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts in Winter Park. It’s a combination recording studio and performance venue. Cortez and the All Stars will perform on Sunday, March 18, from 3:15-4:45 p.m.
Hernando County’s Stephanie Slagle, winner of VSA Florida’s Young Soloist Competition, will wow festival-goers Sunday afternoon. VSA Florida’s mission is to provide, support, and champion arts education and cultural experiences by and for people with disabilities. Slagle, 18, will represent the state in VSA International Competition, slated later this year in Washington, D.C. She earned the Florida title following a strict adjudication process facilitated by professors of music at the University of South Florida in Tampa and professional musicians in Hillsborough County. Slagle will be one of only two Florida vocalists contending for the national title. She’ll perform on Sunday, March 18, from 1:15-1:45 p.m.

THE FOUNDATION Supporting Art Education and Community Spirit
T
he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation, Inc. provides grants to promote community appreciation of the arts and supports art education through scholarships and programs. The foundation supports the Children’s Workshop, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, the Emerging Artists Program, the Image Review Workshop and Performing Arts at The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. It also funds the Jean Alice Oliphant Scholarship at Rollins College and the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Since 2008, the foundation has had a continuing mission to enhance art appreciation, art education and community spirit. During the 2017 festival more than 1,000 children had the opportunity to express their creativity though easel painting. The museum workshops reported more than 500 children per day took part in their hands-on art activities. And each year, more than 4,500 Orange County students have had the thrill of having their artwork showcased and judged at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit. Awesome Interactive Art Just for Kids!
ey, kids! Join the fun and create a unique piece of artwork that you can take home and share with your family and friends. The Children’s Workshop is open each day of the festival — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — and it’s free. It’s located on the west side of the railroad tracks, just north of Morse Boulevard near the Post Office. Be sure to bring an adult with you so they can sign you in. Easel painting is always popular at the Village, with more than 1,000 children and families participating each year. Kids get to paint a picture using the huge outdoor easels that have been a part of the festival for 30-plus years. Celebrate the Rites of Spring at the Morse
he Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art kicks off its seven-week celebration of spring with a threeday open house held in conjunction with the annual Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. All visitors enjoy free admission to the galleries during the festival. Then for six consecutive spring Friday evenings, from March 23 through April 27, the Morse will present live music from 5-8 p.m. during its free open house events. In addition to live music, the events include curator tours of the exhibition Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall at 7 p.m. The April 6 schedule also includes a family tour of selected galleries and a demonstration of landscape painting techniques, with a free take-home art activity for participants. Finally, as is tradition, the Morse will offer free admission on Easter weekend, March 30 through April 1, with live music and a curator tour set for Good Friday. The Morse is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. New exhibits include Tiffany Studios Designs, Louis Comfort Tiffany — Impressions on Film, Canvas, and Paper, and The Domes of the Yosemite, a monumental 1867 landscape painting by Albert Bierstadt. Through April, museum hours are 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Regular admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $1 for students and free for children younger than age 12. Admission is free from 4-8 p.m. on Fridays, November through April. The museum, located at 445 N. Park Ave., is owned and operated by the Charles Hosmer Morse Foundation and receives additional support from the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation. It receives no public funds.

Meet This Year’s Festival Up-and-Comers he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Emerging Artist Program, founded in 1977, encourages new artists to participate in the world of outdoor festivals at no cost to the selectees. Emerging Artists, who are selected through the same juried process as all of the event’s participating artists, will have the opportunity to make sales and get feedback from art patrons and judges. While Emerging Artists are not eligible for prizes, the exposure and the experience is invaluable. This year, three artists were chosen for the program.
DOLORES COLLADO
Dolores Collado
Dolores Collado has been a creative force for more than a half century — and this year’s Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival marks her debut as an exhibiting artist. Born and raised in Granada, Spain, Collado moved to the U.S. in 1967 with her husband to support his medical career and raise their family. During her teens and twenties in Spain, she worked for various fashion houses creating custom garments. She set aside her artistic pursuits to raise three children, but picked back up when she became an empty nester. Collado has worked extensively with stained glass, oils and watercolors. But her truest forms of expression have been realized through jewelry making. Then, when her husband died in April of last year, her children pushed her to focus on her art more than ever before. SUZANNE OBERHOLTZER
Suzanne Oberholtzer is a studio artist who creates handmade paper sculptures and fiber art. She graduated with a degree in communications and advertising from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Her art is informed by her decades-long career in graphic design, and through craft workshops at the Penland School of Crafts, the Appalachian Center for Craft and the Craft Alliance Center for Art & Design in St. Louis. She’s now a resident “Artist-inAction” at Art & History Museums Maitland. Oberholtzer’s works are crafted from handmade paper pulp using age-old processes. She says that employing handmade paper as a fine-art medium combines the alchemy of craft with the technical knowledge she gained through years of working as an art director in the commercial print-on-paper world. Her works have been featured at Orlando Museum of Art’s First Thursdays series, the Participation and Culturepop! programs at Art & History Museums – Maitland, and several Florida Sculptors Guild shows. She was also a featured artist in “Art in Odd Places,” an outdoor visual and performing arts festival held last year in downtown Orlando.

Claire Goodowens
Claire Goodowens — this year’s youngest Emerging Artist — received her first camera at the age of 4, and ever since then has been exploring ways in which photography can combine her two passions: nature and mathematics. Over the past two years, Claire has been enamored with macro photography and its ability to expose complexities in the living world that are typically unseen. Driven by the joy she experiences when she uncovers the hidden mysteries of the wild, Claire is rarely seen without her camera. She hopes that her art will help viewers to see her subjects as much more than “bugs.” If you’re able to see the beauty in even the most insignificant insect, she says, then you’re more apt to see the beauty in all things. Claire hopes to inspire other children to follow their passions.
