Tradition I

t all started 10 years ago when I attended a Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival meeting to see if it might be something I’d like to be part of. Needless to say, I stayed! When March starts, you can feel the excitement building — mixed with a little stress — and we all know it’s almost showtime. This year’s poster is by the late Al Carroll, a graphic artist who conceived of the design more than 20 years ago. Each year, the pressure is on to come up with something new, fresh and still very Winter Park. I think we were successful — and I hope you like and appreciate the result. My son, Max, is as much a part of the festival as I am. Each year we walk around and discuss which piece of art we’ll get that year. He’s learned about different styles, different categories — and that we don’t always like the same thing. Max is fortunate to have been introduced to art at such a young age, both inside and outside the classroom. Each year, our Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit showcases the talents of students in Orange County schools. The pride young people feel when their work is selected to be shown is priceless — and if by doing this we inspire a future artist, then we’ve succeeded. Please take the time to visit the school display and the Children’s Workshop, where kids can paint and enjoy arts-and-crafts activities organized by our area museums. What makes the festival so successful each year is our hardworking board members who care enough to do it well, our volunteers who help us during the threeday event by taking care of artists, selling posters and manning the information center, and our patrons who support the artists by buying their beautiful pieces. We have sponsors who make it possible to offer so much more to our artists and our visitors, and the City of Winter Park whose support and assistance allows us to

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. The festival debuted in March 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together. It’s produced by an all-volunteer board and draws more than 350,000 visitors each year. More than 1,100 artists from around the world applied for the 2017 festival. An independent panel of three judges selected the 225 artists exhibiting their works. The festival consistently ranks as one of the top juried fineart festivals in the country. Recent accolades include a No. 4 ranking on Art Fair Calendar’s roster of Best Art Fairs. Also last year, the festival was listed among Art Fair SourceBook’s Top 10 Fine Art Shows and among Sunshine Artist Magazine’s Top 100.

he three judges for The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival were selected from across the country for their in-depth knowledge and professional accomplishments. In October, they reviewed the digital images of all applicants to select the festival’s artists and those who went on a wait list. In the festival’s opening day, the same panel will visit each booth to select artists who will be considered for awards. Selected artists will then choose one piece that they feel best represents their body of work. These pieces will be delivered for final judging, which takes place on Saturday morning. From among these works will come the Best of Show, the Morse Museum’s Distinguished Work of Art Award and the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation’s Art of Philanthropy Award. Here are this year’s judges:

WILLIAM UNDERWOOD EILAND

Sertic is a Denver-based curator and art historian with an interest in German art and culture of the 1980s. As associate curator of the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (2010-2013) and curatorial assistant at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2007-2008), she organized more than 50 exhibitions by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. She is a member of the Public Arts Committee of the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs and teaches art history at Metropolitan State University. Sertic holds an M.A. in art history and museum studies from the University of Denver and a B.A. in sociology (with a minor in art) from Metropolitan State University. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Gill is an interdisciplinary artist whose award-winning oil paintings have been exhibited in the John F. Peto Studio Museum (Island Heights, New Jersey), the Edward Hopper House Art Center (Nyack, New York) and the Pizzuti Collection (Columbus, Ohio), among other venues. A line of his illustrations, The ToeHeads, can be seen in the private collection of the Center of Science and Industry (Columbus, Ohio). His interactive kinetic sculptures are displayed in public parks and urban spaces. He holds an MFA from the University of Cincinnati and a BFA from the Columbus College of Art & Design. Gill is a Greater Columbus Arts Council Supply Grant Award winner, a juror for the 2015 Columbus Arts Festival, and a former adjunct professor at the Columbus College of Art & Design. Eiland is director of the Georgia Museum of Art and on the graduate faculty of the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia in Athens. He earned a B.A. degree summa cum laude from Birmingham Southern College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia. Eiland has been the recipient of a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship, a Danforth Teaching Fellowship at the University of Virginia, a research fellowship from the University of Georgia’s Wilson Center for the Humanities and Arts, and a Museum Professionals Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. He has edited and contributed to more than 60 publications, including Art Papers, Georgia Journal and Ceramics Monthly. 

POSTER ARTIST It Happened By

Design

Veteran graphic artist Al Carroll had one more design to complete. He and his daughter made sure it would be a special one.

l Carroll, a presence on the Winter Park art scene since the mid-’60s, did not live to see the image he conceived 20 years ago adopted as the official poster for the 58th annual Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. He died in December 2016. The poster, a stylized graphic treatment of Park Avenue as seen from Central Park, was completed by Carroll, who was in failing health, along with his daughter, Hannah Welch. Longtime family friend, artist Scott Sheppard, also pitched in. Carroll was notified just weeks before he died that the image had been selected by The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Board. When he created the original design in 1997, Carroll drew it in pen and ink and filed it away. Welch, who had returned home to spend time with her father, came across it while organizing his things. She thought the image had the makings of an excellent art festival poster, and suggested to Carroll that they update it together and submit it for consideration. Welch colorized the black-and-white image digitally. Sheppard, a computer-savvy artist, was enlisted to contribute some touch-up work and to supervise the printing process. The poster is a combination of skills and ideas offered by all three. If Carroll’s name sounds familiar, that’s not surprising. After working as senior art director for a local advertising agency, he opened Rainbow Tree Studios in 1975, at the corner of Park Avenue and Morse Boulevard. He co-designed the poster for the 14th Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival poster, back in 1973. He later designed the logo for the Park Plaza Gardens and signage for the city’s College Quarter Historic District near Rollins College. He also designed directional signage for the Winter Park Public Library, the Winter Park History Museum and the Winter Park Farmers’ Market as well as the art nouveau peacock silhouette on the city’s street signs and manhole covers. Carroll’s work was used for the cover of the publication More Than a Memory, an official project of the Orange County Bicentennial Committee. An “old-school” graphic designer, Carroll drew and colored his work by hand, and left the computer machinations to others. Spotlight on the Artists of Tomorrow

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has proudly showcased the artists and art programs of Orange County public and private schools since the first festival in 1960. You’ll be amazed to see the skillful and unique works created by these talented local students. The exhibit is named in memory of Leon Theodore, an artist, teacher and past president of the art festival board. The student displays are located across the railroad tracks opposite the stage. This year’s panel of judges includes Kevin Abbott, a painter and sculptor from Sanford who specializes in New York School, mid-centuryinspired art; and Sherri Bunye, a fine-art and documentary photographer and faculty member at the Crealdé School of Art. The Children’s Workshop is open each day of the festival — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — and it’s free. It’s located on the west side of the railroad tracks just north of Morse Boulevard near the post office. Be sure to bring an adult with you so they can sign you in. More than 1,000 children and families participate in easel painting each year during the festival. Kids get to paint a picture using the huge, outdoor easels that have been a part of the event for 30-plus years. Easel painting hours are from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, each of the festival’s museum and community partners has prepared exciting crafts activities on all three days, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Commission believes that children of all ages can develop a love and appreciation for art when they’re given an opportunity to explore their own creativity. 

Welcome to the Downtown Historic District

n an age of concrete, glass and metal high-rise buildings, the charm of the Downtown Winter Park Historic District makes it a popular destination for locals as well as out-of-town visitors. Chartered in 1887, Winter Park was created “as a town, not a castle,” in the words of founder Loring A. Chase, Chase and his business partner, Oliver Chapman, had a vision for a planned community filled with trees, lakes and green spaces to complement the charming downtown area. The town would also have beautiful homes and an abundance of cultural activities. Over the years, city leaders have been wise to preserve the coveted quaintness that has been lost in so many cities. Park Avenue looks much the same today as it did during As a result, in May of 2011, the Downtown Winter Park His- the 1920s. Several buildings in the Downtown Winter Park toric District became part of the National Register of Historic Historic District date to the 1880s. Places, approved by the National Park Service. The register is the official list of the nation’s historic places, which are worthy of preservation. Authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, it’s part of a program to coordinate and support efforts to identify, evaluate and protect historic and archeological resources. The Downtown Winter Park Historic District runs along Park Avenue from Canton to Comstock Avenues, and contains historic structures built from the 1880s through the mid-1960s. Notable architects who designed downtown buildings included James Gamble Rogers II, Roy A. Benjamin and Nils M. Schweizer. The Old Florida-meets-Mediterranean ambiance makes the Downtown Winter Park Historic District a truly special place. 

THE FOUNDATION Supporting Art Education and Community Spirit

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation Inc. provides grants to promote community appreciation of the arts and supports art education through scholarships and programs. The foundation supports the Children’s Workshop, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, the Emerging Artists Program, the Image Review Workshop, and Performing Arts at The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. It also funds the Jean Alice Oliphant Scholarship at Rollins College and the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship at the University of Central Florida. The foundation received funding in 2016 from donations by the Winter Park-based Joe and Sarah Galloway Foundation, the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, the Rotary Club of Winter Park, the Pocket Program and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The Children’s Workshop and the Schools Exhibit are more accessible to handicapped children thanks to the efforts and counsel of UCP (United Cerebral Palsy of Florida) and VSA (Very Special Arts). In August 2016, the foundation provided financial support for artist Susan Bach’s participation in a teacher development conference held by Orange County Public Schools. Since 2008 the foundation has had a continuing mission to enhance art appreciation, art education and community spirit. In 2008, the IRS approved the foundation as a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt entity. tradition was started in 1969, when the Best of Show work was purchased by The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Board and presented to the City of Winter Park. The gift is an annual expression of appreciation to the city for the many services it provides to help make the festival successful. This year, as has been the case since 1996, the winning work will be purchased from the artist for $10,000. You can see the full display at the Winter Park Public Library by picking up a Best of Show brochure at the front desk and taking a self-guided tour. Or, go on a virtual tour by visiting the library’s website. From the home page’s top menu, select the “Research” tab. From the minute Jessy J hit the stage in Fresno, California, for the first time as a member of superproducer/guitarist Paul Brown’s live band on Valentine’s Day 2006, the love between the saxophonist/vocalist and fans of contemporary jazz has been flowing nonstop. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and joining Jessy will be Nathan Mitchell, a Tampa-based jazz, funk, neo-soul and gospel jazz artist. After graduating from the University of Southern California, Jessy worked in the studio with Michael Bublé and toured with The Temptations, Jessica Simpson, Michael Bolton and Seal. She also performed as a member of the Henry Mancini Jazz Orchestra. Jessy’s recording career began after Brown heard her demo, and gave her a spot on his tour. Her first major solo performance was at the 2006 Catalina JazzTrax Festival, which she would headline the following year. Tequila Moon, Jessy’s 2008 debut album on Peak Records, offered a beguiling mixture of pop, jazz, Latin and Brazilian music. The album’s title cut reached No. 1 on Billboard’s jazz chart. That same year, she was named Radio & Records’ Debut Artist of the Year and received the Contemporary Jazz Song of the Year award from Radio & Records and Billboard for “Tequila Moon.” In 2011, Jessy’s album Hot Sauce debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s jazz albums chart. It featured performances by jazz legends Joe Sample, Harvey Mason and Ray Parker Jr. Her 2013 album, Second Chances, featured collaborations with Grammynominated keyboardist Jeff Lorber, Grammy-winning guitarist Norman Brown, world-renowned bassist Jimmy Haslip (formerly with The Yellowjackets) and legendary pianist Joe Sample. Jessy’s sax is featured on a cover of a Selena song, “Thinking of You,” which is included on renowned Southern California producer Gerry Gallagher’s new studio album, due later this year.

ENTERTAINMENT THE DANA KAMIDE BAND, WITH SHARON AGUILAR

Dana Kamide recently returned to Florida after a successful three-year stint headlining at The Label at the Venetian Palazzo in Las Vegas. Kamide and guitarist Sharon Aguilar perform at 6 p.m. on Friday. While in Vegas, Kamide formed a jazz band with A-list musicians who played with legendary artists ranging from Sly & the Family Stone to Frank Sinatra. The band was formed to support the smash show, Sinatra, the Man and the Music, staring Bob Anderson. Aguilar is best known as the guitarist for chart-topping vocalist Cee Lo Green (of Gnarls Barkley fame). She also played guitar on a global tour with international K-pop sensation 2NE1. Also a formidable violinist, Aguilar performed with P. Diddy on American Idol and has amassed TV credits including Saturday Night Live, The Today Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Lopez Tonight, Good Morning America, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Last Call with Carson Daly and The Colbert Report. Kamide and Aguilar partnered to form a powerhouse musical act, and have performed more than 200 live shows.

THE BRASS BAND OF CENTRAL FLORIDA

The Brass Band of Central Florida (BBCF), under the music direction of Professor Gareth Pritchard, features Central Florida’s finest brass and percussion musicians performing in the British style with a uniquely American twist. The band performs 3 p.m., on Saturday. BBCF, a not-for-profit organization, has an active schedule of concerts, outreach programs and competitions throughout the U.S., and has appeared with such world-class soloists as David Childs, Robert Childs, Steven Mead, Philip Smith and Demondrae Thurman. The ensemble has won the North American Brass Band Association Championship and the U.S. Open Championship four times, and has performed in concerts and competitions throughout the U.K. In 2014, BBCF recorded its seventh CD, 15, marking the band’s 15th birthday.

THE LARRY MCRAE QUARTET

Bassist, writer, producer, arranger and author Larry T. McRae began his musical career at 14, playing with gospel great James Cleveland. At 17, the Philadelphia native moved to New York City to play with Norman Connors, after which his career took off. The Larry McRae Quartet — which features vocalist Olyvya Kelly, keyboardist Jarvis Brown, guitarist Brad Catron, drummer Darrell Demonia and McRae on bass — performs at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday. McRae has toured with Roberta Flack, Marvin Hamlisch, Ornette Coleman, Noel Pointer, Will Downing, Angela Bofill and Phyllis Hyman among many other great performers. MORSE MUSEUM Rite of Spring at the Morse: Free Admission

seven-week celebration of spring at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art begins with a threeday open house held in conjunction with The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The season of rebirth and renewal continues at the Morse with free admission, live music, tours and more on six consecutive Friday evenings, March 24 through April 28. Various musicians and musical groups will play from 5-8 p.m. on each of those Fridays, and at 7 p.m. a Morse curator will lead a tour through the museum’s exhibition of the art and architectural objects that survive from Louis Comfort Tiffany’s celebrated Long Island home, Laurelton Hall. On April 7, programming also includes a family tour of selected galleries and a demonstration on portrait painting. In addition, the museum is offering free admission during the festival, March 17-19, and on Easter weekend, April 14-16. For a complete schedule of the museum’s spring events, visit morsemuseum.org. Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, the Morse was founded in 1942 by Jeannette Genius McKean (1909-89), granddaughter of Chicago industrialist and Winter Park philanthropist Charles Hosmer Morse (1833-1921). Jeannette’s husband, Hugh McKean (1908-95), who was an artist, art professor, and for 18 years, president of Rollins College, led the museum as its director for nearly a half century. The Morse, which began its life as a small museum organizing shows of loaned objects, is today home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American designer and artist Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). It attracts visitors from around the globe. Located at 445 North Park Avenue in downtown Winter Park, the Morse is open 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. 

Meet This Year’s Festival Up-and-Comers he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Emerging Artist Program, founded in 1977, encourages new artists to participate in the world of outdoor festivals at no cost to the selectees. Emerging Artists, who are selected through the same juried process as all of the event’s participating artists, will have the opportunity to make sales and get feedback from art patrons and judges. While Emerging Artists are not eligible for prizes, the exposure and the experience is invaluable. This year, three artists were chosen for the program.

XINO SCUDERI

Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, Scuderi grew up helping her artisan father and taking road trips with the family. She always had a camera on hand. After participating in grade-school art programs, Scuderi decided against attending an art college. Instead she earned a degree from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg in anthropology and geography, with a focus on global conservation. Scuderi later rediscovered her natural born talent for art through her love of adventure and the outdoors. In 2013, she asked her friend (now partner) Kyle what was the best, cleanest, sharpest lens she could use. He said, “Here, try my macro.” Since then, Scuderi hasn’t put the macro lens down. LORI SCHINELLI

As many Brooklyn girls do, Schinelli spent the summer days of her childhood at the beach. Those sunny days gazing at the ocean held, for her, a special power to calm her heart and anchor life’s uncertainties. She earned her B.A. from the State University of New York, then married and had children. She took classes in painting and sculpture, and found that glass diminished that ache that she had thought only the sea could alleviate. Since then, Schinelli has traveled across the U.S. and Canada, studying with masters at such major glass centers as the Bullseye Glass Factory (Portland, Oregon), The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass (Corning, New York) and the Pilchuck Glass School (Stanwood, Washington). MARISA S. WHITE

Best known for seamlessly stitching multiple photographs together, White weaves her own personal narrative through surrealistic and fantastical imagery. Having grown up in Houston with The Menil Collection and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in her backyard, White was heavily influenced by the surrealists. She uses dreamlike imagery to express ideas and emotions not so easily conveyed through traditional landscapes and realistic settings. Her themes, however, are not mysterious. Through her art, she explores questions of life, love, fear and the unknown. Initially a mixed-media collage artist, White earned her BFA from the University of North Texas. Through her studies, she fell in love with the camera and further honed her photographic skill during a summer in Missoula, Montana, at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography.
