Notes from the Cantor Our Heroes and Their Legacies I don’t go to the movies much anymore. Don’t get me wrong; its not that I don’t enjoy the movies, I do!

In fact I love movies. Its just that they don’t make many movies these days that I enjoy. I like movies about real life, history, love, movies that have a positive message that I can learn from or be inspired by.

I don’t care for violence or sci-fi.

This past summer I enjoyed a rare treat. Within one week I saw two movies that left me deeply moved and inspired – “RBG,” a documentary about US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” about Fred Rogers on whose television program by the same name many of our children and grandchildren were raised.

As I pondered the great impact on American society of these two individuals, it occurred to me to write about them for my High Holy Days bulletin article. After all, an essential aspect of the High Holy Days in general, and Yom Kippur with its Yizkor service in particular, is remembrance. Not just remembrance per se, but as a precious learning opportunity in this troubled world of ours. Our loved ones who have gone before us provided great role models, and bequeathed legacies to us which contribute so much to who we are or can become.

As human beings it is our nature to constantly yearn for connection and to seek meaning in our lives. That is exactly what the High Holy Days are about. They require of us a positive spiritual adjustment of our otherwise frenetic paced lives. For this we all need good role models, heroes, and for me, Ruth Ginsburg and Fred Rogers present that ideal.

The usually soft-spoken Ruth Ginsburg has become somewhat of a superhero. She has served on the Supreme Court since 1993. She was just the second female justice appointed and regularly and proudly cites her Jewish heritage as a source of her love of learning, and sensitivity to justice and the plight of the oppressed. One of Ruth’s own role models is Holocaust diarist Anne Frank, who questioned gender inequality in her writings.

Ruth has been an indefatigable champion of women’s rights during her quarter century on the Supreme Court. This past July, on receiving a lifetime achievement award in Tel Aviv from the Genesis Prize Foundation, she stated, “The demand for justice, for peace, for enlightenment runs through the entirety of Jewish history and tradition...I hope I will have the strength and courage to remain steadfast in service of that demand.”

Our children (and we adults, too) learned so much from Fred Rogers, who, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was also quiet-natured. They learned about safe neighborhoods, about making goodness attractive, how to treat others, how to deal with emotions especially anger, about the power of love, compassion, acceptance, kindness, the arts, and so much more.

Although a Presbyterian minister, Fred often quoted Jewish concepts such as tikkun olam – repairing the world, tsedaka, and gematria – numbers. His favorite number was 143. As he said, “It takes one letter to say I and four letters to say love and three letters to say you. One hundred and forty-three.” He liked that concept so much that he maintained the constant weight of 143 pounds for the last 30 years of his life and swam almost every day to help with that.

Fred was deeply mystical, as seen in another of his favorite sayings, “What is essential is invisible to the eye.” One of his favorite devices while delivering speeches was to pause for a minute of silence for audiences to remember those who had helped them along the way, guided them, and “loved them into being.” These moments of silence and personal reflection we Jews employ each Yizkor that we recite four times a year. They are for me a reminder that many of our heroes are often unsung, or, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Fred Rogers, soft spoken and gentle, who through gentle persistence became giants, superheroes of our society and history.

Our upcoming Ethical Legacies program with Rabbi Stephanie Aaron on October 7th will afford you a precious opportunity to explore and shape your own legacies for the future. And in doing so, let us pledge to emulate Fred Rogers and for Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We need more heroes like them.

President's Message As We Usher in the High Holidays As We Usher in the High Holidays The High Holidays are now upon us. Significant work has been going on at the synagogue by the staff, the Cantor, and the ritual committee to insure that everything runs smoothly. Being the new president gives me a bird’s eye view to all the work that goes on. I now appreciate the behind the scenes preparation and those who are putting in the hours to make it go effortlessly. This year, please give a special thank you to those who helped make our High Holidays possible.

As we usher in Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at CBI, it gives us a sense of community and belonging to something much greater than ourselves. There is no question that belonging and feeling connected is correlated with a good sense of well-being and better mental health. Academic studies have confirmed this association. The highly respected Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan believed that the key to Jewish survival and our ability to flourish over the millennia was a result of Jewish people creating that sense of tribe - that deep sense of belonging.

Whether we know it or not, that is one of the things that we are trying to do for each other by coming together as part of a synagogue community to start the New Year. We are all members of that ancient tribe that has lasted over the millennia. No other religious group has stayed together as long as the Jewish people. It has been that need to belong as well as our belief in our precepts that has kept us together over the centuries.

Rabbi Kaplan was known for saying that belonging precedes believing. What we believe in as Jews is greatly varied. But one thing for certain is that our sense of community and belonging, whether being involved or not, is fundamentally important to our sense of well-being.

There is so much that CBI offers us in addition to coming to our joyous Shabbat services. Please consider coming to our Adult Education lectures, workshops, and young congregants programming. Not only does CBI benefit from you being there but I am sure that you will benefit more. We are always looking for congregants to be on our committees as well as being involved in our activities.

Please approach any of our board members and ask what you can do for CBI. Recently, the executive committee under the leadership of our immediate past president, Howard Rosenberg, established the new CBI Foundation Endowment Fund. It is already up and running. We really hope that this Foundation will insure a bright future for CBI and it’s congregants for perpetuity. Soon, the members of the finance committee will be starting a campaign to approach congregants to participate in this very important endeavor.

At the end of the day, you will be grateful that you helped. Your sense of belonging to a greater whole will not only benefit CBI but you’ll be a better person as a result.

We at CBI welcome everyone. On behalf of myself and my family, may we inscribe and seal ourselves in the book of life well lived.

An ethical will (Hebrew; Tzava’ah) is a document designed to pass Jewish ethical and moral values from one generation to the next.

Rabbi Aaron will provide the tools, guidance and instructions so that every participant can write his/her own personal ethical will.

Is an Ethical Will only an end of life document?

An ethical will can be created in any number of formats and at any time. A few examples: • A letter written by a mother to her sons and daughters to be read after they are married • A written account by grandparents to their young grandchildren • A series of "pearls of wisdom" chronicled and passed down from a father to his son

David S. Stone Religious School R continues at NO COST to Families

On Sunday, September 30th there will be no morning classes. Instead, please join us for a family-friendly Sukkot/Simchat Torah dinner and service at Congregation B’nai Israel. The dinner begins at 5:00 p.m. and the service at 6:00 p.m. with dessert to follow. It promises to be a fun-filled evening!

We are happy to continue offering tuition-free religious education to all students of the David S. Stone Religious School

The David S. Stone Religious School is off to an extraordinarily busy start this school year and have many holiday celebrations this month.

Please mark your calendars for a special “Bless the Pets Program” at the end of Religious School from 11:30 a.m.-noon on Sunday, October 14th.
