Junior Congregation For our High Holiday celebration the Youth Department and USY have teamed up for Junior Congregation 5775. This year we will include fun-filled educational programming, USY led services, holiday games, singing, and storytelling. All activities will be age appropriate for Pre-K through 6th grade.

LISHMO’A EL HARINA – LISTEN TO OUR MELODY Every year, with the arrival of the High Holidays, clergy face the predicament of large numbers of congregants returning with a desire for a positive spiritual experience despite not having attended synagogue in a long time. This is exacerbated by the predominant use of Hebrew in the Conservative service, and the chanting of unique melodies used but once a year. With a large captive audience at our mercy, clergy constantly seek nuances to overcome congregants’ potential sense of boredom, or the feeling that services are - simply speaking - tedious and long! In other words how does the “audience” become a “congregation?”

Years ago the mode of synagogue worship was for the congregation to pray in an undertone, while the hazzan (and choir) chanted on their behalf. Technically, the hazzan is responsible for conveying the prayers of the congregation to God. But, how much more desirable to God might our prayers be, and how much greater the spiritual motivation of congregants, if we raised our voices together and joined in melodious communal prayer with the hazzan?

Today, this has become the mode of worship in many synagogues. The congregation evolving from a historically passive role to more active participation in services through the davening/worship experience.

The above title of this article is a quote from a prayer in the Selichot service which is held on Saturday night before Rosh Hashana. This prayer expresses our yearning for God to “listen to our melodic prayers” of the High Holidays. This is also the title of our new CBI book of transliterated High Holiday prayers that Miriam Beckerman, Alix Greenblatt and Paul Causman have spent the summer compiling from a similar book I created for my previous congregation. Our book will be ready for services this year.

During a substantial portion of the service the hazzan is forbidden to interrupt the davening by offering explanations or other talking. Thus I included short commentaries and explanations in the publication designed to enhance your understanding of the liturgy. We owe Miriam, Alix and Paul a deep gratitude for this vital, time-consuming project, designed to improve your service comfort level, and to enhance your spiritual experience through making davening more accessible. This transliteration book was made possible through the estate of Marcia Greenspoon Liber.

At CBI we use a different machzor/prayer book to my previous congregation, and every congregation’s rite differs somewhat. So, although both are Conservative and most of the prayers the same, the page numbers as well as the entire publication had to be completely reworked.

We hope that with the help of this compilation you might consider staying longer (services have become substantially shorter) or attending services you missed in the past. Like Ne’ilah, at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, which is potentially our most inspiring service as we conclude the intense day and break the fast together in our social hall.

Through our new transliteration publication, it is hoped that when we beseech God, “lishmo’a el harina/to listen to our melodies,” the “melody” will be that of our entire congregation, raised on high.

RABBINIC INSIGHTS FROM RABBI JASON Wake Up for Rosh Hashanah WAKE UP!!! When I was a high school student, I always dreaded the horrible sound of the alarm clock. I would press the snooze button several times before my father would finally enter my room and suggest, in a not-so-gentle way, that it was enough with the snooze button and time to get ready for school. I still do not enjoy trying to wake up early in the morning; however, I have not relied on an alarm clock since my first child was born almost eleven years ago. Being awakened by excited children eager to play with their Daddy makes the early morning rising more enjoyable than the annoying buzzing of the alarm clock. When I was on my own at a beautiful Jewish summer camp in Boulder, Colorado, I had to relearn how to set the alarm clock and it forced me to reflect on how we wake up in the morning.

that gets you out of bed and eager to start your day? Perhaps it will be your kids, a new project, the prospect of a job well done, the beginning of a good book, or the chance to make a difference in your community through an act of social justice.

As we approach the new Jewish year of 5775 there is much for us to be energized by in Jewish life. Times are difficult for the Jewish people right now with Israel battling for the security of its citizens and anti-Semitic incidents on the rise around the world.

However, there is much light to counter the darkness in our world. We must awaken each day ready to make a difference... always remembering that we are created B'tzelem Elohim (in God's holy image). Let us all get excited about what life has in store for us in the coming year. We all have an internal alarm clock that, if working well, will help thrust us out of bed in the morning. This internal alarm clock is God. When God called to Adam in the Garden of Eden, asking rhetorically “Ayeka?” (Where are you?), it was the first instance of God functioning as an alarm clock.

If we listen closely, we too can hear God asking us each morning “Ayeka?” Where are you? What will you do today? For what purpose are you getting up? Will you help change the world in a meaningful and positive way? Will you arise like the lion ready to go about your business, mindful of your place in the world and grateful to your Creator for another day in the world? In order to wake up excited to start our day, we must be excited about what the day may bring.

Maimonides, in his Hilchot Teshuvah (The Laws of Repentance), explains: “Even though the sounding of the shofar is a divine decree, there lies within a spiritual hint. As if it is announcing: Awake sleepers from our sleep and unconscious ones end your slumber.” The clarion call of the shofar is indeed our alarm clock during the entire month preceding the Days of Awe and on Rosh Hashanah itself. The Shofar stirs us from slumber, no matter how deep our sleep.

Message from the President Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are supposed to motivate Jews to reflect on our actions in the previous year and develop a personal improvement plan for the New Year. Synagogues and other Jewish organizations operate with a similar plan to rectify errors and omissions of last year and make better plans for the year ahead.

Recently our board of trustees participated in a Board Retreat during which we examined each others’ responsibilities and made suggestions for improvements and reordering of priorities. My fellow board members made several suggestions about my role as president, which I have taken to heart. To summarize, it was suggested that I develop goals for our congregation, further enlarge and develop our pool of volunteers, as well as participate and be visible at most synagogue programs with an emphasis on attending Shabbat and holiday services. Message received.

Be assured I take those responsibilities seriously and synagogue finances are never far from my mind. I believe that we are making very good progress with our expenses but the responsibility to increase our income is a tremendous challenge. This year we will again have a Yom Kippur appeal as our membership dues only represent about 60% of our income. This will be the only appeal that we will make the entire year.

Thanks to Cantor Lichterman and our wonderful board of trustees for their support and guidance. Our volunteer congregants and board members are the lifeblood of our synagogue. They inspire me to work harder and more creatively to further strengthen our congregation.

Many great ideas for the future of this group were discussed:  Baby baskets for newborns/families of congregants.  Assistance in various ways for Bar/Bat Mitzvah families  Cooking and serving for the congregational Sukkot dinner coming up in October.  We are in the process of planning an opening event in October based on the interests sent back from the replies of the questionnaire emailed out last month.

DAVID S. STONE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL We are looking forward to a terrific school year at B’nai Israel. We are thrilled to welcome Dara MusherEizenman to our teaching staff. She has been dedicated to our program for many years now and she will be a tremendous asset to our staff. School begins on September 7th, and we have many exciting, interactive projects and field trips planned for our students this year. Some of the trips include a trip to the Holocaust Memorial in Detroit, a grocery store mitzvah trip to benefit JFS, The Toledo Zoo Van, a trip to the Rosary Cathedral, the Hindu Temple, prepare and serve lunch at the Cherry Street Mission and more. Jewish Family Service To Offer New Program for Seniors The Patient Advocate Program, to begin this fall, connects Jewish seniors with trained volunteers who will ensure they get the most out of their medical appointments.

Volunteers will assist individuals by helping to identify questions, concerns, or symptoms prior to the appointment that they would like to discuss with the physician, accompany them to the doctor’s office, provide support and advocacy to ensure full understanding of the information being provided, and present a summary of the appointment to the individual.
