On Rosh Hashanah it is tradition to walk to a river or spring (preferably one that has fish in it) and recite special prayers called penitential prayers. Tossing bread crumbs on the water is symbolic of casting away our sins and starting a new year with a clean slate.

Join us for Selichot on Saturday night September 5 and for Tashlich on Sunday, September 20 when we will combine with Congregation Etz Chayim.

Rabbinic Insights from Rabbi Jason The haftorah for the first day of Rosh Hashanah comes from I Samuel 1:1–2:10 and describes the birth of the prophet Samuel to Elkanah and his wife Chanah, who had been childless for many years.

The story in the haftorah echoes the story discussed in the torah reading only moments earlier. Each year on the first day of Rosh Hashanah we learn about our matriarch Sarah giving birth in her old age to Isaac after many years of childlessness.

During one of her annual pilgrimages to Shiloh, the site of the Tabernacle, the archetypal barren woman Chanah tearfully and quietly pleads with God to bless her with a son, promising to dedicate him to God's service. The High Priest Eli saw her whispering and berated her, thinking that she was must have been drunk. After hearing Chanah’s explanation that she had been whispering in prayer Eli blessed her that God should grant her request.

Chana conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Samuel. The haftorah concludes with Chanah’s prayer, in which she thanks God for granting her wish. The plight of Chana is not unique in our day. There are many couples who wish to have a child, but are unsuccessful.

On July 31, Zuckerberg made a public post to Facebook announcing that he and his wife Priscilla Chan were expecting a child.

While nothing would be unusual about such an announcement on Facebook – they occur every day – the Facebook founder and CEO elaborated on the challenges the couple endured in sustaining a healthy pregnancy.

“Priscilla and I have some exciting news: we're expecting a baby girl!” Zuckerberg continued, “We want to share one experience to start. We've been trying to have a child for a couple of years and have had three miscarriages along the way… It's a lonely experience.

Most people don't discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you -- as if you're defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own... When we started talking to our friends, we realized how frequently this happened -- that many people we knew had similar issues and that nearly all had healthy children after all. We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt and will help more people feel comfortable sharing their stories as well.”

From the story of the barren woman Sarah in our Torah reading Rosh Hashanah to the story of Chana, who prayed for a baby, to the story of the Zuckerberg-Chan family this summer, we know that many couples struggle to have healthy babies. Let us all pray that in this new year those who have prayed to have a child will be able to do so.

Junior Congregation and Family Service Services will begin at 10:45 a.m. on both days of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur. Sam Falk will be leading the services with Rabbi Miller and the help of our Youth Department. All activities will be age appropriate for Pre-K through 6th grade.

Message from the President Toledoans have learned to enjoy our wonderful midwest summers in part because they are so brief but also because there is so much to do. The summer kicked off with our very well attended Congregation Annual Meeting followed by a fabulous shul picnic. Our board of trustees welcomed the following new trustees: Greg Davis, Stuart Goldberg and Bennett (Buz) Romanoff. Our full board of trustee list can be found in another part of our bulletin.

During our annual meeting, it was gratifying to acknowledge the outstanding volunteer efforts of Jerry Russell who was honored as the Outstanding Board Member of the Year. Jerry is ever vigilant by assisting all of our staff and many of our congregants with his good deeds. Both Miriam Beckerman and Paul Causman shared the award for Congregants of the Year for their hard work behind the scenes; Miriam for her caring and competent preparation and management of our kitchen and Paul for layout of our monthly bulletin as well as the design of numerous special event notices. Our Sam Schwartz Minyan Award went to two time recipient Arnie Remer for his continuous and faithful participation in our daily minyan. Each of these individuals play an important part in the life blood of our congregation for which we are very grateful.

Looking ahead, September arguably contains Judaism’s top three holidays; Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Cantor Lichterman is busy creating beautiful services for the High Holidays. We are fortunate to again welcome back Rabbi Jason Miller and Sam Falk to Congregation B’nai Israel for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Recently, our office mailed dues statements to our membership. Although we have an official dues structure that takes into consideration the age of our members and family status, some of our members decide that they can afford to pay more so that those less financially blessed might pay less. Our board of trustees desires to increase affiliation with CBI and would not want anyone to disaffiliate because they were not able to pay their dues. Our synagogue office staff is happy to work with you to set up a payment plan.

The Adult Education Committee (AEC) of Congregation of B’nai Israel (CBI) is starting up a new Tarbuth Society.

Tarbuth is the Hebrew word for culture. For close to 60 years after the Holocaust, there was a Jewish Tarbuth Society here in Toledo. The purpose of the society was to promote Jewish culture and education, camaraderie, and to learn on a very informal and enjoyable basis in its member’s homes.

Once each month, excluding the summer months, meetings will be held in member’s homes in the early evening. Officers will be elected by the membership to organize the meetings and to collect dues. At each meeting, a short discussion of the Torah portion of that week will be done by a Tarbuth Society member with commentary done by either a knowledgeable member or by an invited rabbi or chazzan. A very short business portion of the meeting will take place after that, followed by a presentation of a Jewish subject chosen by the Tarbuth member who is hosting the meeting in his/her house. Jewish presentations can range from Jewish personalities in theater or sports, philosophy, Jewish history, Israel or American politics, Israel, Jewish law or any subject that the host would like to prepare and discuss with the group. For those members who feel uncomfortable preparing a presentation, any member can volunteer to give a talk at any meeting. After a group discussion of the talk, a light milchig dinner will be provided by the host member. Nominal voluntary dues will be asked for in the 2-5 dollar range at each meeting.

At the end of the year, dues raised will be donated to a Jewish charity of the choosing of Tarbuth membership.

Any person, male or female, in the Jewish community of Toledo is welcome to become a member of the Tarbuth Society.

Membership is not limited to CBI congregants even though the Tarbuth Society will exist under auspices of CBI. Belonging to the Tarbuth Society is a very rich and meaningful experience for all of its members promoting and enhancing one’s Jewish knowledge in a low keyed and relaxed atmosphere.

The Food Pantry Needs Your Help!

Pick up a bag at CBi and fill it with items for our community. The Jewish Community Food Pantry is in need of paper items, personal care items, baby items, (diapers, toilet paper, toothpaste, etc.) and nonperishable food. All food must be sealed and cannot be past the expiration date.

Please bring your filled bags to B’nai Israel and we will deliver them to the Sekach Building.

Youth & Education News Good summer to everyone. I hope your summer has been easy and fun. The summer has been extremely busy for the USY kids.

Congratulations to Miranda Hupp who was elected USY president. I know she is excited to work with the local USY and regional USY chapters for an exciting upcoming year.

Congratulations to Dahlia Zack for being elected treasurer.

Dahlia and Miranda are committed to providing their leadership for a successful year.

On June 15, 2015 our local USY and the Detroit USY took a trip to Kalahari Waterpark for a full day of fun in the water. Over forty-five (45) kids attended this event that was sponsored at no cost to our USY kids. Thanks to Kim Brody, Debbie Spangenthal and Megan Miller who along with me, had a great time. The USYers behaved well and appreciated the event.

On August 23, 2015 the USY kids will have a fun day at a local farm where there will be a cookout, water activities and a chance to relax before the hectic school year begins.

The rest of the USY calendar for 2015-2016 has been planned and is available for everyone to see, including the upcoming Fall Boards during the weekend of October 15-18, 2015 at B’nai Israel. We appreciate the volunteers helping to make this weekend go smoothly and who will welcome the out of town USY kids into their homes for two (2) overnights.

Telephone calls are being made to our volunteers to thank them for helping to make this weekend a great time.

Megan Miller, Kim Brody, Debbie Spangenthal, Miriam Beckerman and many other valuable members of our congregation continue to put their best efforts to make the Fall Boards a fun and memorable weekend for all participants. Their efforts have proven to be a vital key to the USY’s success and B’Nai Israel’s success for the leadership and conservative religious qualities that is instrumental for our children.

Dear Families, We are very excited to announce that BITUSY (B’nai Israel Toledo United Synagogue Youth) will be hosting the 2015 CRUSY Fall Boards/Freshman Kinnus at B’nai Israel. This is an amazing opportunity for our USYers and congregation to participate in a weekend full of prayer, education, Jewish community and FUN! Fall Boards is scheduled for the weekend of October 16, 2015.

In order to make this weekend an absolute success, we are asking for your help. Please consider opening up your home and serving as a host family for the convention. All you have to do to become a part of this exciting weekend is to fill out the form and return it to B’nai Israel. As we get closer to the date of the event, you will receive more communication regarding the schedule of events. We look forward to working with you to make this weekend a huge success!

If you are not able to open your home but want to still get involved, we do need volunteers to help throughout the weekend.

Youth & Education News David S. Stone Religious School

We are off to another great school year at David S. Stone Religious School. The Sisterhood opening meeting on September 27th meeting will feature some of our students and former students who had the opportunity to participate in Judaic summer travel experiences, as well as staff who had the opportunity to travel to Israel for the Educator’s Seminar.

Students will also be helping out at the JFS food bank and decorating the sukkah at CBI. The deadline for a deposit and completed paperwork is September 11, 2015 for the 2016 Confirmation Trip to Israel. Our students will be visiting Israel from June 6-16, 2016, as the culmination of their Religious School experience.

Thanks to the Kripke Family Israel Fund at the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation for making a fourth trip possible.

Students will have the trip of a lifetime to Israel.

Congregation B’nai Israel BITUSY will be hosting USY Fall Boards the weekend of October 18. We will not have Religious School that weekend. We are looking to our congregation to help out and welcome USYers from all over our region.

72nd Anniversary Nat’ah karem is a phrase from the beloved prayer Eishet Chayil, taken from the Biblical Book of Proverbs. We reenvision this prayer today with appreciation for the hard-working, generous, family-oriented woman who “plants a vineyard by her own labors” (Proverbs 31:7). We honor her productivity, independence, creativity, and orientation to a hopeful future with the 2016 campaign.

Torah Fund is a campaign to ensure our legacy to future generations of Conservative Jews by providing: Rabbis, Cantors, Lay Leaders, Social Workers, Educators and Administrators (for Day Schools and Synagogue Schools) Scholars, Researchers and Synagogue Administrators.

Members will either need to borrow one of three copies at the B’nai Israel Library or request a copy through the Toledo Public Library. The book is also available on Amazon Kindle, in paperback, or through the Amazon Marketplace.
