Notes from the Cantor Prayer & Song As the High Holy Days swiftly approach, I will be resuming a more Cantorial role in our services rather than the additional ‘acting-Rabbi’ role I fill all year at CBI. The Cantorial portfolio on the High Holy Days is taxing enough, making it necessary to hire additional staff to adequately facilitate these services.

This year, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of our new Rabbi as bimah partner, Rabbi Joan Friedman. I am excited to collaborate with her to make our services as meaningful as possible. This rabbinic role will be in addition to the roles of Assistant-Hazzan/Torah Reader that Rabbi Friedman already filled so beautifully last Yom Kippur. Rabbi Friedman will also join us for Selichot on September 21 and on those occasions during the year as needed or when I am out of town.

Rabbi Jason Miller served us well for the past six years having increasingly become a familiar presence that our congregants welcomed each High Holy Days. However, Rabbi Friedman’s additional chanting and Torah skills presented an opportunity for CBI to combine staff portfolios and increase efficiency, a decision our board did not take lightly, but out of necessity.

I write this article in mid-August to meet a deadline for our September/High Holy Days bulletin, when coincidentally the Torah portion we are reading is ‫ ואתחנן‬- Va’et’chanan, from Deuteronomy chapters 3 – 7. This title derives from the portion’s first word, meaning Moses 'pleaded'. He ‘pleaded’ with God to be permitted to cross over the River Jordan to see the Promised Land.

To me as a Hazzan, this word has remarkable connotations. The great commentator Rashi, basing his interpretation on the Sifre, says that Moses’ plea was a ‘tefila′ which he describes as one of ten forms of prayer. Although Rashi does not reference this, it is highly likely that his interpretation was at least partly based on the Gematria/Numerology of the Hebrew words ‘Va’et’chanan’ and ‘tefila’ in that they happen to have identical numerical values of 515. To take this one step further, they also numerically equal the Hebrew word ‘shira’ meaning ‘song'. In other words, we might understand this emotive word ‘Va’et’chanan’ as meaning that when Moses pleaded with God, his plea was in the form of a chanted prayer.

This interpretation segues to the High Holy Days. As the climax of our calendar year, its melodies play a particularly significant role. Remove the nusach/melodic fabric and shira from these services and they will remain but a skeleton. The essence and spirit of prayers such as Avinu Malkeinu, Zochreinu L’chayim, B’rosh Hashana, Hin’ni, V’al Kulam, Hayom, even the various Kaddish melodies, to name but a few of the hundreds that are interspersed throughout the intense High Holy Days liturgy, will dissipate. Kol Nidrei would remain nothing but a dry formulaic negation of vows.

At the Women of CBI Opening Brunch event “Making Rosh Hashanah as Sweet as Possible” on Sunday September 15th, I will teach some of these melodies and provide recordings for you to take home. We look forward to seeing you all there as it is open to the entire congregation and Religious School parents.

Much preparation has gone into providing a wonderful program, packed with worthwhile information designed to enhance your High Holy Days.

Another way to enhance you High Holy Days is to attend our excellent Selichot program on Saturday night September 21st at 8 PM with Rabbi Joan Friedman. Besides the program by Rabbi Friedman, the short one hour service is a veritable synopsis of High Holy Day liturgical highlights and melodies.

For the past few years, we have also provided a transliterated hymnal for those less familiar with Hebrew. It closely follows the order of service so it’s easy to follow. Please make use of them to enhance your participation and services experience.

Then we will all look forward to joining together enthusiastically in prayerful song, as the liturgy exhorts God and us on Selichot: ‫ לשמוע אל הרינה ואל התפלה‬- ’lishmo’a el harina v’el ha-t’fila’ - ‘listen to our melodious prayers’.

President's Message The Call of the Shofar Too often we all fall into the trap of saying prayers by rote. We go through the motions without even thinking of what we are reading or saying. The fact is that too many of us view the services of the High Holidays year after year as the same old prayers and the same old stuff. That is just a normal human trait that even the most devout Jews can succumb to.

So, how can we use Rosh Hashanah to really turn over a new leaf? How can we go through all the motions and make a difference? How can we make palpable and meaningful changes in what we say, do, and think?

Just as we have the freedom of democracy and the freedom of free elections, Rosh Hashanah is a day when we, as Jews, have the freedom and the opportunity to elect to create change and to really cherish the chance to bring God into our lives. Too often on the High Holidays we make resolutions that frequently only last a few minutes, hours, days, or weeks and then we go back to our old ways.

We live in a time when religion has been rendered irrelevant to many of us, especially the younger generation. Too many of us go to the High Holiday services out of guilt or out of obligation. Some go out of habit or go just for the children. Too often the ritual has become divorced from the spiritual which connotes that personal relevance isn’t always experienced through the traditions.

How can we do better and establish real meaning out of Rosh Hashanah? How can we take the commandment and tradition of blowing the shofar and in some way glean from it, as well as all the other rituals of the holiday, a message that has personal relevance?

So, what is the real message of the blowing of the shofar and what message does it have for us? Does our soul have a sound and if so what does your soul sound like? Would you like the opportunity to hear the sound of your soul? That is an intriguing thought. What is our soul? Many would consider it a spiritual entity. Love is an experience of our soul. Compassion is a manifestation of our soul. Feelings originate deep in our soul. Just as we have internal aspects of our soul, there are external influences that can reach into our soul. Music, poetry, the beauty of nature, the joy and suffering of others can all touch our soul.

So we do know how the soul exercises and expresses itself in different ways in our lives. But actually the sound of the shofar shows us the closest approximation of what our soul sounds like. When we hear the shofar, we should all make every effort to not just hear the physical sound that the shofar makes but instead we should think metaphorically about the concept of hearing the sound of our own soul, our own inner voice.

When a person accesses that part of themselves, then one can harness the secret to all of life’s triumphs and successes. Everything in life originates from how you see yourself and how you view the inner voice of your soul. Our inner voice tells us how to act in spiritual way and how to really change how and why we do things in life. That is the real call and message of the shofar.

This Rosh Hashanah let us try to really think about what this holiday is all about. Let us try not making it the same old, same old. Let us try not only to hear the words of the liturgy and the words of the prayer book as well as the call of the shofar by rote. Let us try to make a palpable difference in how we can each change and create a change. continued on pg. 14 3

The Toledo Jewish community is invited to hear Israel Educator Yoni Alon discuss the results of the 2019 “snap election” held two days prior in Israel. On May 30, 2018, the Knesset voted to dissolve itself due to incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s failure to form a governing coalition, the first such failure in Israeli history. Because of the Israeli electoral system, the prime minister will not yet be known, but Alon will touch on the 120 members voted to make up the 22nd Knesset and who President Rivlin decided to invite in hopes to form a coalition. Learn which parties are in, which parties are out, how many seats each party has, and more critical results from the election. There will be a question and answer period after the analysis.

Yoni Alon is a Tel Aviv native. He served in the Israel Defense Force for seven-and-a-half years in various roles, including as a liaison officer connecting the U.S. military with the IDF. Jewish Federation & Foundation

Volunteers Needed at JFS!

The Patient Advocate Program offers an opportunity to engage in a meaningful and rewarding experience. This program connects trained volunteers with Jewish seniors to ensure they get the most out of their medical appointments.

VOLUNTEERS CAN BE JEWISH AND NON-JEWISH. Volunteers assist individuals in preparing for medical appointments, accompany them to appointments, and act as an advocate by facilitating communication between doctor and patient. This program offers volunteers flexibility and a chance to enhance the lives of seniors and our community.

Jewish Federation and Foundation of Greater Toledo present

Move to the music of the Maccabeats this fall On September 8 at 2 p.m. at Temple Shomer Emunim, the Maccabeats will perform a free concert for all ages.

The Maccabeats are an Orthodox Jewish all-male a cappella group, but as their website proclaims, they aren’t your Zayde’s synagogue choir. Founded in 2007 as Yeshiva University’s 14-member student vocal group, the Maccabeats specialize in covers and parodies of current hit songs with Jewish-themed lyrics. They are best known for their Jewish holiday songs, including a cover of Matisyahu’s Miracle. Each year, they release a wellreceived Hanukkah music video. The group, now comprised of seven members, has also produced original songs. While the Maccabeats beatbox to imitate instruments, they are strictly a vocal act. This spirited concert is for all community members.
