Notes from the Cantor Sound the Shofar What child fails to be delighted and fascinated by the sight and sound of the shofar, the High Holy Days’ ubiquitous ram’s horn, such as predominantly Ashkenazic ones that are usually short and straight, or Sephardic ones that are usually long, twisted and decorated? Their contrasting hues of brown and gold stir our imaginations, their varying highly pitched, trumpet-like sounds, or deep, haunting French horn or trombone-mimicking calls echo in our ears long after the Holy Days have faded. Whatever the shape and sound, there are multiple levels of understanding the shofar’s usage. So integral is the shofar to our Rosh Hashanah liturgy, that one of the three sections into which the Musaf service is divided, is in fact called Shofarot. In this third section of Musaf, seven reasons for the shofar are mentioned, with references from Exodus, Numbers, Isaiah, Zechariah, and Psalms. These include the Revelation at Sinai, judgment, redemption, praise, return of exiles to Jerusalem, freedom, and joyous occasions. I am always fascinated by numerical interpretations. We begin to sound the shofar a month before Rosh Hashanah at the conclusion of each morning service during the last month, Elul. The exceptions are Shabbat when the shofar is forbidden, and the last day of the month so that there is a separation before the New Year. There are 29 days in Elul, so the total number of days on which we sound the shofar in Elul is: 29 -1 -4 = 24. Each time we blow 4 kolot (sounds):- tekiah, shevarim, teruah, tekiah gedola: 24 x 4 = 96 which in gematria (Numerology) = the Hebrew word וידעו/v’yad’u, meaning, “they shall know” as in Exodus 7:5 which states, “they shall know that I am the Lord.” Thus the symbolism of the shofar in Elul, the time that is utilized to prepare for the New Year, is knowledge of God in our lives. Another example is the gematria of the actual word שופר/shofar which = 586, the same as ולשמרי/ul’shomrei, meaning, “those who observe the commandments” as in Exodus 20:6. Remarkably these words also = Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) as it is often spelled in the Bible without the second letter ‘yud’. On Rosh Hashanah we sound the shofar at least 100 times. Some relate that to the law of reciting 100 blessings each day taught by Rabbi Meir in the Talmud (Menachot 43b based on Deuteronomy 10: 12). Others cite the 100 times we add Psalm 27 of Repentance to the liturgy during the High Holy Days. One of the Scriptural quotes in Musaf of Rosh Hashanah, Psalms 47:6 states, “God ascends in teruah, the Lord with the voice of the shofar.” This is understood as referring to Moses’s ascent on Mount Sinai to receive the second 10 Commandments. It represents God’s ultimate forgiveness for the sin of the Golden calf, our so-called second chance which is a central motif of the High Holy Days. Ramban (Nachmanides) points out that the two different Names of God used here denote two different Divine aspects: Elokim denotes judgment whereas the Tetragrammaton (the ineffable 4-letter Name of God) is associated with divine mercy. Thus, teruah of the shofar repesents judgment, and tekiah is mercy. Think about it: Tekiah, the first sound we blow on the shofar is one long, confidant note, as if everything is fine = mercy. Shevarim (which is not referred to here) is three short sounds, as if things are first starting to disintegrate. Teruah is 9 sounds in quick staccato, a long wailing sound, as if denoting trouble = judgment. But we always end on a strong note, with a long tekiah gedola = confident of God’s forgiveness. We surround the judgment/sadness/teruah on both sides with mercy/joy/tekiah. Perhaps that is also why, in the Vidui/ Confessional of Yom Kippur the nusach of traditional melodies is in a major key, suggesting hopeful confidence in God’s acceptance of our repentence and granting us forgiveness. Rabbi Daniel Lehmann, “The shofar is our human effort to encourage God to move from his seat of judgment to the throne of mercy, to infuse the day of strict justice with the compassion that we humans so badly need, inspired by the sound of our most fundamental musical gesture, the cry of trepidation and joy produced through the ram’s horn.” (Hebrew College of Boston High Holiday Companion, June 28, 2017) I look forward to greeting you all at High Holy Days services. President's Message Behind the Scenes September and October are very busy months at Congregation B’nai Israel. Unless you are on the inside track at CBI, you have no idea how much work goes on behind the scenes to orchestrate the High Holidays, Sukkot and Simcha Torah. The office staff headed by Chuck Traugott, the Hazzan, as well as the Ritual Committee headed by Jerry Russell, put in countless hours and days in planning these most important holidays. As president of CBI I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand how and what these individuals have to do. As a congregant, all seems to fall in place and everyone who has a role or duty at the High Holiday services seems to fulfill their part of the service. I never realized all the hard work that was done, mainly over the summer, to arrive at the High Holidays. I really appreciate how dedicated our staff consisting of Gabi Mallin, Rhoda Miller, Religious School Principal Kim Brody, Youth Director Megan Miller, our Executive Director Chuck Traugott and our beloved Hazzan, Ivor Lichterman are. I want to recognize all the hard work that Larry Johnson and Karen McQuade do behind the scenes to insure that all is ready prior to your arrival at CBI and that we have delicious food to eat each week at kiddush. Gabi Mallin has done a masterful job of creating our bulletin every month, not to speak of her artistic talents in keeping our display cases and hallway walls up to date and appealing. This year we are very fortunate and blessed to have Rabbi Joan Friedman as our Holiday Rabbi. She is very personable and professional in taking her responsibilities very seriously. Please take a moment to introduce yourself when you see her after services or the next time she is in town officiating at a Shabbat service. She enjoys getting to know our congregants. If you have followed her on social media, you already know that she is a brilliant writer. Over the summer, our Adult Education Committee, headed by Jeff Bauer, was hard at work arranging monthly lectures covering the entire year at CBI. I serve on this committee and I appreciate the significant amount of thought, consideration and work that goes on at the committee level to make a most interesting and vibrant lecture series. I am confident that all who attend will greatly enjoy and benefit from the outstanding list of invited lecturers this upcoming year. Our Programming Committee, headed by Helen Michaels, is looking into creative and compelling programming this year. In addition to general programming, the Women of CBI, formerly the Sisterhood, have planned some wonderful events. Please follow the monthly bulletin to decide what programs interest you. The Women of CBI have also done a wonderful job of totally reorganizing the Phyllis J. Diamond Gift Shop. It is a great place to shop for Judaica and gifts for all ages. We have done much work this past year to make CBI as safe as possible by addressing the security needs of the congregation. Besides always having a police officer present for Shabbat services, Sunday school, High Holidays as well as other holidays and CBI events throughout the year, there is much more that we have done that is not obvious to you to make your time in the building as safe and secure as possible. We are constantly looking for new and more innovative ways to make our premises even safer. We have been told by security authorities that we are way ahead of the curve in all the measures that we already have in place. We can thank the excellent work of Chuck Traugott and Jerry Russell who have put in so much time orchestrating our security needs. Headed by Kim Brody, our Sunday school is up and running with a full schedule over this academic year. Our BITUSY youth group also have exciting and fun events planned. There is much more at CBI but I will have to write about that in another article. If you ever have any questions, concerns, ideas, or suggestions, please feel free to contact me or any other board member at any time. We are always looking for volunteers to serve on our committees. We are always open for creative ideas to make CBI a wonderful and welcoming place. Have a wonderful and healthy New Year and please consider becoming involved at CBI.

"SMOOTHIES IN THE SUKKAH" Wednesday, October 16th 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
We are off to a terrific start to the new school year! The fall holidays are upon us and we are looking forward to engaging programming for all students and families at David S. Stone Religious School. Our annual Tashlich service with Congregation Etz Chayim will take place on October 6th at 10:00 am by the lake behind Congregation B’nai Israel. Please mark your calendars to join us at 5:00 pm on October 20th at Congregation B’nai Israel to celebrate Simchat Torah and Sukkot with a festive dinner and celebration. There will be no class the morning of October 20th so that we will be sure to see everyone participate in the evening celebration. Cathy Sperling will teach an interactive genealogy unit to our students in 6-9th grade throughout the month of October and the beginning of November. We would love the parents of 6th-9th grade students to participate in this exciting project with their children. The genealogy program will also include a visit to Beth Shalom cemetery on October 27th to take photos for an international archive project that Cathy is a part of. We are counting on parental support for this exciting unit.
BITUSY members enjoyed delicious treats at the BITUSY Welcome Back Ice Cream Social on Sept. 8th.
Please mark your calendars for an important program for parents on November 17th. Representatives from the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) office in Cleveland are coming to Toledo for a workshop for all Jewish parents to discuss Anti-Semitism and how to discuss and respond with your children. The program will be at Shomer Emunim from 9:30-11:30 and include a continental breakfast. This is a community sponsored program that is crucial for all of us to attend.
