Notes from the Cantor Women Power I am writing this article between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the Ten Days of Awe, during the height of our spiritual calendar. It is just a few days before my dear mother Miriam’s incredible 96th birthday. I just got off the phone with her and despite a recent setback (she fell and broke her right arm and was hospitalized for weeks) she made it to shul on both days and nights of Rosh Hashanah and plans to fast and attend on Yom Kippur.

She belongs to an Orthodox synagogue where women sit in the balcony which is up two flights of stairs in an older building where there is no elevator. She climbed the stairs with no problem to take her regular balcony seat front and center. Mother is a true, literal survivor. She survived four years of hell – the Warsaw Ghetto followed by four Concentration Camps! Yet she emerged as one of the most positive people I have ever met.

A true shining light! Although my dear, late father receives most of the credit for my career, I am so deeply indebted to her for what she has meant to me, to our family, and to her community of Cape Town, South Africa.

This brings to mind the central role women play in our lives, both personally and nationally. In my article in last month’s CBI bulletin, I wrote about Ruth Bader Ginsburg as one of our national heroes who has done so much for women’s rights. She is one of three women now serving as Supreme Court justices, one third of the total. Women continue to make strides in many areas. As many as 77 women may run in almost all of the 36 states with a governor’s race in the upcoming election.

Rabbanit Hadas Fruchter Fruchter,, 28, recently ordained as an Orthodox rabbi rabbi,, is planning to open her own Orthodox synagogue in Philadelphia next year. She has received seed money from "Start Up Shul", an organization that promotes gender-inclusive Orthodox synagogues, and a one year fellowship from Hillel’s Office of Innovation. She was ordained through the Orthodox Yeshivat Maharat, which to date has ordained 21 women. (I was impressed that our local Toledo Blade saw fit to feature this story on the front page of its Religion section of August 4th, 2018).

For the first time in Israel a woman, Shira ben-Eli, was recently appointed judicial assistant in a rabbinic court, one of the court’s most senior positions. This follows an almost two-year lawsuit calling for gender equality in Israel’s rabbinical courts. As a result, the requirement that judicial assistants have rabbinic ordination was dropped. For the first time, the Israeli Air Force recently appointed a 34 year old female pilot as commander of a flight squadron squadron.. (Her name cannot be published for security reasons). Although women flew fighter planes during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence and the 1956 Sinai War, thereafter they were removed from all combat positions. This past summer, Israel recorded a record number of women recruits (1,000) into combat positions as Israel’s military continues to increase their roles. During the past five years the number of Israel’s female combat soldiers has almost quintupled.

Across the world in Australia, an Aboriginal Jewish professor has been appointed deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Sydney. Lisa Jackson Pulver is the first known Aborigine to receive a PhD in medicine at the U of Sydney. Having undergone a two year Orthodox Jewish conversion process, she is now a member of Sydney’s Orthodox Great Synagogue. In France, Holocaust survivor Simone Veil who passed away a year ago aged 89, one of France’s most revered politicians and a fighter for women’s rights, received the rare honor of being buried at the Pantheon where French heroes are interred. She is only the fourth woman so honored, though 72 men are interred there. Amongst her many achievements as health minister, is leading the fight to legalize abortion. The law is known in France as “Loi Veil.”

Back home, the pivotal role of our wonderful women in the life of CBI is most recently demonstrated by our glorious year-long 150th anniversary celebrations celebrations,, chaired by Fagie Benstein, Cathy Sperling and Sharon Stein. Our service assistant for Yom Kippur was the accomplished Rabbi Dr. Joan Friedman from Akron, OH, author and professor at Wooster College. Two upcoming opportunities for inspiration are once again produced by our women. On Sunday October 7th, "Our Ethical & Moral Legacies" Will Writing Workshop Workshop,, will feature my old friend and colleague, expert facilitator Rabbi Stephanie Aaron from Arizona. This important program is chaired by Fagie Benstein. The Women’s Weekend retreat on October 19-21 will feature special guest Julie Wohl, author, artist and Family Education Specialist. Many thanks to the planning planning committee: Miriam Beckerman, Cathy Sperling, Sharon Stein, Sandy Traugott and Judy Weinberg. These programs extend the exalted spirit of our High Holy Days into the new year. Don’t miss them; they will soon sell out. Hearty yasher koach/kudos to the wonderful women of CBI who are making all these programs happen!

My dear father-in-law Jerry Lacker often says, he wishes more women would be elected to public office. He believes they would be more honest and more likely to serve the best interests of those they serve, having not been corrupted by the long history of male power in the world. The past national election in the USA almost saw a woman elected to the highest office in our Nation. Israel has done it, England has done it twice, and many countries have done it. Who knows? If a woman is elected President of the USA, might the world be a better place?

There are so many “neshei chayil – women of valor.” I know that. I am the son of one, the father of one, and married to one.”

President's Message From Solemnity to Joy We all just experienced the Days of Awe, the High Holidays. Leading up to Rosh Hashanah we focused on introspection and the seriousness and solemnity of the holiday. Immediately after the High Holidays we are thrust into Sukkot, one of the three pilgrimage festivals that deal with miracles. In Devarim, 16:14, it says: “And you will rejoice in your festivals, and you will be only happy”.

Why should we be so happy? After all, the sukkah is meant to remind us that throughout our history we have so often been forced to wander from place to place, often living in fear. We wandered in the desert for forty years after leaving Egypt. We wandered from country to country for almost 2000 years following the exile after the Second Temple. We were expelled from Spain and Portugal. We were forced to live in ghettos and we wandered in absolute fear during the Holocaust years. In a way, the sukkah is a metaphor for our collective experience over our history. So often we have had to live in temporary huts and dwellings. So often we had to live with fear and insecurity.

So, why do we rejoice and feel festive and happy during the festival of Sukkot?

Whereas the miracle of Pesach is that God brought us out of Egypt freeing us from the hands of slavery and forced labor and forty years later gave us our own homeland. The miracle of Shavuot is that God revealed himself at Mount Sinai to the entire nation of his people and bestowed upon us the Torah.

But during Sukkot we are reminded of God’s love and caring for all of his people. Just as we are surrounded by the walls of the sukkah, God has always been there for us in hard times surrounding us to help sooth us from our hardships. He was there to provide and protect us over the forty year journey in the Sinai and He, to this day, is with us. Just as a baby feels secure and comforted by a warm blanket provided by its loving mother, we too should feel comforted about the certainty that God is always with us in good times and bad.

Sukkot is a time for families to be together away from the grind of daily life and the toils and time constraints that go with work and a busy family life. In the sukkah we enjoy good meals, conversation with family and friends, and the comfort of knowing that it is a mitzvah in what we are doing. In Vayikra 23: 42-43, the Torah says: “Live in a sukkah for seven days. All native born Israelis are to live in the sukkah so that your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in the sukkah when I brought them out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God”.

Israel and Israelis are the epitome of why we should rejoice, be festive and happy during Sukkot. Israelis have lived in subliminal constant fear since its nationhood in 1948. They are surrounded more or less by hostile neighbors. There are over 100,000 missiles aimed at them just over the border in Lebanon and Iran has long range ballistic missiles that can hit Israel at any time. This is good reason for any sane person to have fear and insecurity. In spite of this, even secular Israeli Jews have faith in God; perhaps not in a religious sense, but certainly faith in the future, faith in life, faith in hope and an unconscious faith that God will always be there to protect them. Israel is always listed as one of the top ten countries where the citizens are the happiest and most content. Israel is a perfect example of a nation that lives with fear and insecurity but its citizens still rejoice in the beauty of life; a life filled with contentment and joy. This juxtaposition of two polar opposites is most ironic but nevertheless quite true.

Just as the sukkah reminds us of our “wandering Jew” past, it is also a place where we feel secure and can rejoice. Our faith in God is the ultimate answer to fear and insecurity.

An ethical will can be created in any number of formats and at any time. Everyone enjoyed our Sukkot/Simchat Torah celebration on September 30th with our special guests from Israel. We are looking forward to more events with our chaverim from the “Israel at Your Doorstep” program.

Coming up on Sunday, October 14th, we are thrilled to have our “Bless the Pets” program. This exciting event will take place at the end of Religious School, from 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m., on the back patio of Congregation B’nai Israel. We are asking only Religious School families to bring their pets for this fun program.

Youth Education & News Our B'nai Mitzvah Students Make Beautiful Cards for Children Exposed to Trauma

The Healing Art kit project gave our b'nai mitzvah religious school students the opportunity to contribute to a global initiative that helps kids who have been exposed to extreme trauma, like terrorism in Israel. The kits are a PhD designed tool to provide art therapy to children who have just experienced traumatic events.

The art therapy provide may help prevent Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, otherwise know as PTSD. The notes are typically written from Americans, to the Israeli children who will ultimately receive them. These notes are intended to be messages of sympathy and support.

The students in our B’nai Mitzvah class were happy to be able to participate in such a meaningful program.
