Notes from the Cantor ………………………………………. In order for the bulletin to get to press on time and arrive at your homes by the beginning of October, all submissions were due before Rosh Hashanah. But, in all honesty - how could I possibly project these few crucial weeks ahead, when all the commotion of the High Holidays will begin to subside, if Rosh Hashanah hasn’t even arrived?! And yet, I am perturbed that after the High Holidays there is a huge ‘letdown’, crowds dissipate from synagogues and people return to their comfortable routines. Rabbinical words of wisdom fade, cantorial chants of upliftment cease to ring in our ears and little, if anything, changes. To counter the above, that I might help sustain the spirit of the High Holidays just a little bit longer, I reference an article in the Toledo Blade of September 11, 2017 that caught my attention; ‘Shoot at hurricane? Joke taken seriously. Over 50,000 sign up on Facebook.’ As a JOKE, a Florida man invited people to a Facebook event to shoot at Hurricane Irma. He never expected anyone to take him seriously, but over 50,000 signed up immediately! He stated, “It seems the joke may have gone over many peoples’ heads...they think this is actually happening. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.” He concludes, “there is a lesson to be taken from this viral experience: I’ve learned that about 50% of the world could not understand sarcasm to save their lives.” Really? I could not believe this! I agree with his conclusion but we can derive more significant lessons from this absurdity, and apply them in our own lives. This story indicates that many people have way too much free time. Facebook is an amazing cr eation for which the wor ld owes Mar k Zucker ber g a huge debt, but only when used appropriately. It can become addictive and, as in this case, absurd! The same can probably be said for many modern day inventions, such as the ubiquitous cell phone. It can be useful as a camera. It offers instantaneous access to information (our morning minyan Panera gang); and it can even be a life saver. Or it can be obsessive, a waste of valuable time. Several recent studies (Chicago Tribune of March 25, 2017) indicated that smartphones are hurting social relationships. I wonder what future studies will indicate about teenagers’ ability to interact face to face? I thought that people are much more hassled and harried than ever before, as many complain that they have too much to do and too little time. Yet this incident could prove the opposite. And had the author not explained that it was a joke, I wonder how many more would have taken the time to sign up. How many of the respondents actually did something real to actually help people affected by the r ecent natur al disaster s? Or was their only response a Facebook signup to “shoot at Irma” ?? I am reminded of King Solomon’s opening statement in Kohelet/Ecclesiastes, which we shall read on Shabbat Sukkot : -it is all vanity of vanities, futility of futilities! Recently on the Shabbat when we read the Torah portion Ki Tavo (Deuteronomy 26 – 29), I spoke about choices spelled out several times for us in the Torah - to make our lives a blessing or a curse. Moses was about to die, having led our People through the desert for 40 years. Now they were at a crossroads, about to enter the Promised Land to establish a holy kingdom. Moses would no longer be there to guide them day by day, but he hoped, given the Torah, they would make the right choices. In Judaism we have freedom of choice. Similarly, after the High Holidays we are at our own crossroads. We have heard messages of the potential for change. What changes will we implement? Will technology and social media dominate our lives as a vain pursuit, or will they be used as the benefit to society their creators intended? Will we use time wisely? One of my favorite quotes is, as Judaism brilliantly states,

! The choice is, literally, in our hands.

President’s Message…………………………….…………... Sitting in Our Sukkah. It’s getting to be that time of year again. The morning air is crisp, the leaves are starting to show the first signs of change, the wooly bear caterpillars are crawling about. The big trees right outside our synagogue are sometimes full of noisy blackbirds, gathering into flocks before they start their migration south. Another sign of the changing season at CBI is our sukkah. Very soon [probably before you read this column], we will put up the sukkah, then start using it during Sukkot. I really like our sukkah. It is unlike the prefabricated affairs used by many congregations. Those are light weight and easily erected. They are not all that expensive, and easy to set up and take down. I’m sure they would have worked well for the years of wandering in the wilderness. Some day, maybe we will get one, but not yet. Our sukkah is heavy and cumbersome, with thick pieces of wood, and nuts and bolts. It takes a team of dedicated and caffeinated volunteers to set it up properly. You can get a splinter, or a bump on the head if you are not careful, and go home with tired muscles and a sore back. Yet, that is one of the things I love about it. It is a team effort taking a brotherhood of volunteers to put it up. Though it is traditionally a “guy” thing, women are invited to help with the work. One of the nicest back-yard sukkahs I have eaten in was designed and built by our friend Cathy who, among other talents, is an accomplished carpenter. When you go into our sukkah, it may not seem to be the fanciest. It is a bit uneven and has a homemade feel about it. That is another thing I like about it. I think that it feels more welcoming than any prefabricated one you can buy at Amazon.com. It isn’t sterile; it feels like it has soul. Those involved in the arts or in design would say it is “organic”. Add the hand-made decorations from our children and it is perfect. Sitting in the sukkah having a bite to eat after morning minyan is a treat, even on a cold day. However, our sukkah does not have the honor of being the least fancy ever. That title probably belongs to our back-yard sukkah hastily made by laying branches across the climbing gym I had made in our backyard in 1980. That structure was already a bit tilted and getting more so with every use. Plus, I’m not sure that the sticks we laid on the sides of it counted as walls, so it probably was not really a proper sukkah. Still, it was our sukkah, if only for a day. With some sandwiches and fruit, we had our lunch in the sukkah. Sukkot marks the transition from the solemnity of the High Holidays to our “season of rejoicing”. I hope you enjoy Sukkot, and will take advantage of all that our congregation has to offer, including the chance to share this joyous holiday in our B’nai Israel sukkah.

Joe and Joyce Moran Joyce Reichlin-Moran is a Toledo native who attended B'nai Israel on Kenwood Blvd as a child. She has always felt connected to the congregation by seeing its members in the community and through her employment at Pelham Manor. Joe Moran is a Toledo area native who attended Scott High School. He is retired probation supervisor and works part-time as a substance abuse counselor in the Lucas County jail. Their children Jenna and Jacob also attended Sunday school classes at B'nai Israel. Kristallnacht Community Observance for 2017 at B’nai Israel

On Wednesday, November 8, 2017, Erev the 79th anniversary of Kristallnacht, we will gather together at B’nai Israel at 7:30PM to commemorate the Night of Broken Glass with the World Premier Concert - NEVER AGAIN: Music Out of the Ashes. On November 9, 1938, Hitler used the killing of a German diplomat in Paris as a pretense to engage his Nazi thugs in a “spontaneous” planned assault on the Jewish Community of Germany and recently annexed Austria. It was designed to see how the world would react to the beginning of the anti-Jewish campaign that we now know as the Holocaust. The world merely shrugged it off as a manifestation of the usual anti-Semitism rampant in European history – not that unusual. 91 Jews were killed that night. Thousands of synagogues and Jewish businesses were destroyed and approximately 20,000-30,000 Jewish men were rounded up and sent to concentration camps that day and the next merely for being Jewish. The streets were covered with broken glass (kristal in German) from the shattered windows of Jewish-owned buildings, businesses, and synagogues that were vandalized and looted during the attacks. NEVER AGAIN: Music Out of the Ashes is a one-hour educational concert founded on the premise that all of humanity is one family, sharing in common the ideal of human decency and mutual respect for all peoples. The program is designed to uplift the human spirit through music and also to educate all segments of society to recognize and combat fascism and prejudice. The concert uses the music written and performed in the ghettos and concentration camps in combination with some history about how the Holocaust developed and evolved, focusing on German tactics of incremental oppression of Jews and other target groups, as well as the means by which the Nazis convinced the citizens of Germany and occupied Europe to tolerate and even to participate in such heinous crimes against humanity. The music helps to educate the heart rather than just the mind. NEVER AGAIN should anyone, anywhere, be treated that way - this applies to Jews and to all other people on the planet. Collaborators on this project include musicians, teachers, lawyers, and others donating their time, with the understanding that music is a universal language which can illuminate the human heart and soul. Conductor and musician Sara Jobin was inspired to create this musical experience after she conducted the Bach B minor Mass in Dachau, just outside the concentration camp memorial site with 60 performers from 8 different countries. The concert was in memory of Noorunisa Inayat Khan, who gave her life in WWII when she was killed there as a British spy. It was a viscerally powerful experience for her offering the music as a healing to the souls who had perished there. During and after that performance she realized that the music of Jewish composers written when they were imprisoned in the ghettoes and concentration camps needed to be performed once again. They wrote their music hoping to be remembered and sounding it serves somewhat to give them the immortality they deserve.

Message from the Principal……………………………………. David S. Stone Religious School The school year is well under way and all of the students at David S. Stone Religious School are involved in many exciting learning opportunities. The Fall holidays are upon us and we are looking forward to celebrating Sukkot and Simchat Torah with the congregation. Our oldest grades saw the documentary “Bearing Witness” last month. Hindea Markowicz introduced the documentary which was filmed at Congregation B’nai Israel 7 years ago featuring our students interviewing local Holocaust survivors. The film was very impactful to our current students and so important to realizing the stories of our local survivors. We are continuing to strengthen our relationships with our friends in the Western Galilee through partnership activities throughout the year. Our students will be working collaboratively with our friends in Israel to learn about each other and build relationships for years to come.

CBI NEEDS YOUR HELP FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS! Our BITUSY and Kadima chapters are having a fundraiser to help out the families of Southwest United Synagogue Youth (SWUSY) who were flooded out of their homes, neighborhoods and synagogues in Texas. SWUSY is a region of the International Conservative Youth movement and covers a large area of the country that includes Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Our former CRUSY regional director, Jacki Honig, is now regional director in Texas, and we are working directly with her.

We are asking for donations of gift cards to Target, Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot or grocery stores (in the Houston area), in denominations of less than $50, that will be distributed to families in their affected kehillot. BITUSY will have a table at Sunday School on September 17 through October 29 to collect gift cards or to accept money in order for gift cards to be purchased. Congregants can send in or drop off any contribution or gift cards to the office ATTN: BITUSY gift card drive. 10

CBI Receives Grant for New Parenting Program By Ellie Williams Thanks to a recent grant received in the Creating a Welcoming Website competition, Congregation B’nai Israel is pleased to sponsor “The Challenges of Jewish Parenting in a small Jewish Community,” a series of workshops dedicated to parents with children ages kindergarten through high school. Parents of children from both Etz Chayim and Congregation B’nai Israel are warmly invited to attend. The grant competition was sponsored by the National Center to Encourage Judaism and the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs’ Keruv (to come closer) program, spearheaded by the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, which was formed to answer the needs of interfaith couples and families, and, in the words of the Torah, to “welcome strangers into the tent.” Congregation B’nai Israel welcomes interfaith families into our synagogue family through our Keruv program. Keruv programming provides opportunities for congregants to explore issues relating to intermarriage in a safe and supportive environment.
