Notes from the Rabbi The Origins of Yizkor As you have probably figured out, one of my interests is in the history and meaning behind our prayers. Since we have the Yizkor service coming up again on October 3 for Shemini Atzeret/the end of Sukkot, and this service is about remembering past generations, I thought we could take a look back at "past generations" of Yizkor, and see how this service came to be: Yizkor is such a key part of the Yom Kippur service today (and on other Festivals), that you may be surprised to learn that if you looked at old prayerbooks, you would not find anything resembling this service until perhaps the 16th Century at best, best, and then, for Yom Kippur only only.. This is not to say that the concept of memorializing the dead or elevating their souls did not exist prior to that, but the service that we know emerged fairly late. The origin of a community prayer for the dead probably was in response to the First Crusade (late 11th Century) that completely wiped out major Jewish communities in the Rhineland. This was very much the Holocaust of its time and provoked a need for liturgical response, which eventually solidified into the Av haRahamim prayer. This prayer remembers Jewish martyrs who died for their beliefs but also expressed a desire for God to take vengeance on those who perpetrated those crimes against us. Most Conservative siddurim still include it in the weekly Torah Service (though it is not widely used) but have completely dropped it from Yizkor. This prayer was initially recited in Germany on two specific Shabbatot a year (only later, in Poland, it was expanded to every Shabbat), but not on any holidays. By the 16th Century, the first formal service existed, specifically for Yom Kippur – based on the idea of atoning for the deceased. In addition to Av haRahamim, haRahamim, this included the first “Yizkor” prayers for parents (similar to the individual‘s prayers we have in our booklet). Perhaps a little later, it was joined by early versions of the now-familiar “El Malei Rahamim” memorial prayer. By the 17th Century, Yizkor was starting to be recited on the last day of Festivals in Eastern Europe through popular desire and a connection to the Torah reading. It was not until the 1819 Hamburg Temple Prayerbook, Prayerbook, an early Reform siddur, that the full modern Yizkor that is familiar to us emerged, including the opening biblical passages and concluding Mourner’s Kaddish. It also added contemporary prayers in German comparable to the English ones in today’s American Yizkor services. This format was so influential that even many Orthodox siddurim today incorporate these innovations that originated in a Reform siddur. Over the last two centuries, we have worked using the same framework, innovating new readings and poetry to accompany the core prayers. The fascinating thing about the Yizkor service is that it came into being, both in content and timing, not by rabbinical design, but out of the needs of communities, and still continues to develop to this day. May we continue to adapt and innovate to find new ways to keep our loved ones’ memories alive in our hearts and deeds.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept old books on Jewish subjects from your library. We would be glad to receive your old prayer books, tallitot or other religious objects for burial.
If you have your own tallit, please bring it to Holiday services at CBI. There will be some available, but only in limited supply. If you would like to purchase a tallit from the CBI Gift Shop, contact Roanne at 419-882-2111 to set up an appointment to see the beautiful, new tallitot for sale.

If you are observing a yahrzeit and would like an aliyah, please let the office know by Thursday of that week by calling (419) 517-8400. This insures your name is included in the weekly Torah Guide. If that is not possible, please find our gabbai, Jack Katz, at services on Saturday morning.

President's Message We're Still Friends Everyone knows that CBI has been in discussions with Etz Chayim about sharing our building since late May. To be clear: It was always about sharing, not merging. Things were going smoothly. Our kashrut kitchen fit their needs. Talks on which building spaces would belong to Etz were ongoing and financial mediations were just starting. Then on August 13, I got word that Etz’s Futures subcommittee had voted - not unanimously – to stop the process. Two weeks later, their full board voted - again not unanimously – the same way. So what happened? President Margie Siegel explained their position very clearly in a letter addressed to our board and me. “It is with deep respect and sincere appreciation to Congregation B’nai Israel that the Board of Congregation Etz Chayim has chosen to end discussions regarding the possible sharing of space. When we entered the process, many of us believed that this was going to be a win-win situation; an answer for us in terms of downsizing and a source of support for you. We found every step of the process went smoothly, with members of both teams speaking openly and honestly. The space you were going to be able to share was certainly adequate. The proposed rent was clearly negotiable. The kitchen is up to our standard of kashruth. Nothing was wrong from what you presented. Our ultimate decision came down to two factors, independence and identity. After going through this entire process, we believe that we will maintain our independence only by being in our own space. Similarly, we believe that is how we will best maintain our identity as an Orthodox Congregation. We are acutely aware that the time and energy you put into this process was considerable and we so appreciate that. And although we will not be sharing space, we hope that we can continue the warm relationship that we have enjoyed over these years.” Margie thanked me in person for our board’s willingness to explore the issue. She also thanked Gabi for all of her effort, which she knew was enormous. I thank our three subcommittees for their hard work. Am I disappointed? Yes. Do I understand? Yes. Let’s put ourselves in their shoes. We’re shrinking as Etz is, though more slowly. What if we entered discussions to share the Temple’s building? Don’t laugh. Akron’s conservative Beth El Congregation (located in Akron’s JCC) is negotiating to share space with the reform Temple Israel Akron. I’ve spoken with the Beth El President and those talks are much more complex, believe me. In that light, Etz’s decision is more coherent. In the end, we continue to share Etz Chayim’s friendship and events and they continue to share ours. Our sanctuary is getting two new handrails. As you face the ark, one will be to the right of the left pulpit, while the other will be vice versa. We hoped to have them installed by the start of the High Holidays but unfortunately there were fabrication delays. Once they are installed, they will support all who need assistance on the steps leading up to or down from the ark. My thanks to the Oberlin Family for allowing us to use Marian and Stanley Oberlin Fund money – its purpose is to cover accessibility inside our building - to pay for the entire cost. Events Women of CBI Book Club: Kaplan's Plot: A Novel by Jason Diamond Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 10:30 AM at CBI One of the most anticipated books of the year by the Chicago Review of Books, Debutiful, The Millions, Hey Alma, and the Orange County Register “A gangster novel of epic scale.” - People “A sprawling, funny, Jewish family saga. . . . Kaplan's Plot concerns Chicago, cemeteries, secrets and crimes, and the enormous gift of loving somebody for who they truly, imperfectly are.” - Boston Globe Elijah Mendes was hoping for a more triumphant return to Chicago. His mother, Eve, is dying of cancer, his business has flamed out and he has nowhere else to go. Elijah feels listless and shattered, worried about how he's going to help his mother despite their chilly relationship. He finds some inspiration when he discovers that their family owns a Jewish cemetery and that his great-uncle Solomon Kaplan - a man he's never heard of - is buried in a plot there. With
a new sense of purpose - and an excuse to talk more deeply with his mother - Elijah begins pursuing a family mystery of extraordinary proportions. Elijah discovers his grandfather Yitz, Eve's father, was a powerful gangster in the 1920s. She was ashamed and never spoke about him to Elijah. Religious School News Notes from our Principal
Alongside their holiday learning, our students are beginning to explore Modern Israel. Through stories, conversations, activities, and cultural exploration, they are learning about Israel’s geography, history, language, culture, and everyday life. They are also beginning to think about the connection between Israel and Jewish communities around the world.
Growing in Jewish Learning at CBI! The new school year is well underway at the CBI David S. Stone Religious School/Hebrew School, and our classrooms have already been filled with learning, creativity, questions, laughter, and Jewish spirit!
At CBI, we believe Jewish education is about more than memorizing facts or prayers. We want our students to ask questions, explore their Jewish heritage, share their ideas, and discover what Judaism means to them. Most importantly, we want them to feel that there is a place for them in Jewish life and that their voices and experiences matter.
As we move through the beginning of the Jewish year, our students have been learning about the High Holidays, exploring the traditions, stories, prayers, and values that make this season so meaningful. Through discussions, activities, and hands-on learning, students have been discovering the meaning behind Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur while having opportunities to reflect on forgiveness, gratitude, and new beginnings.
It is wonderful to watch our students learn from one another, build friendships, and grow together as a Jewish community. Whether they are practicing prayers with Rabbi Marsh, creating sukkah decorations, discussing the High Holidays, or discovering something new about Israel, they are building connections and memories that can stay with them for years to come.
Our students have also been learning and practicing Jewish prayers with Rabbi Marsh. They are becoming more familiar with the words and melodies while also learning about the meaning behind the prayers. We want our students not only to know the prayers, but to understand them and feel comfortable participating in services with their families and the CBI community.
We are grateful to our teachers, Rabbi Marsh, our student helpers, and our families for helping make Jewish education such an important part of our CBI community. We look forward to a year filled with continued learning, celebration, creativity, friendship, and discovery!
Our classrooms have also been filled with creativity as students make decorations for our sukkah while learning about the traditions and values of this beautiful holiday. Sukkot provides a wonderful opportunity to learn by doing. Students are creating, decorating, sharing, and thinking about the importance of welcoming others and building community.

Process for Funeral Arrangements and Other Life Cycle Events
• Click on the YouTube icon on your TV. • When YouTube opens, search for "Congregation B'nai Israel - Sylvania, Ohio".
If a death occurs and you need to make funeral arrangements, your first call should be to the funeral director. The funeral home will contact CBI staff to make the necessary arrangements, including notifying the rabbi. The rabbi will then contact you to set up a meeting to gather information and plan the funeral.
• Be sure to click on the listing that has the photo with Jewish star (see photo above). above). • We recommend that you "subscribe" to the channel so you can easily locate the live stream for future services. We also highly recommend connecting to the live stream services on your TV as it is the most immersive and closest experience, short of being in the synagogue.
Please bear in mind the Rabbi does not have his phone on him during Shabbat and Yom Tov, but he will respond as soon as he is able after Shabbat or Yom Tov ends. To schedule and plan other life cycle events, you should call the synagogue office at 419-517-8400 during office hours (M-F, 9-3). Staff members can give you the Rabbi’s number or will give the Rabbi your information and he will return your call.
