L’Dor V’ Dor, From Generation to Generation It is with great pride and joy that the Sisterhood of B’nai Israel announces the creation of a Living Legacy of the Confirmation and Consecration photo’s of our religious school.

Sisterhood has contracted with Legacy Link to digitize our beloved class photos from the Kenwood Boulevard Building.

An inter-active screen is being created to ensure the history of these classes that begin in the 1920’s. The dedication of this historic and memorable project will take place on Sunday, October 21, at the Sisterhood opening meeting.

Brunch will be at 10:00 a.m. in the Barry Social Hall. The cost is $10. Please make your reservations by Monday, October 15th to Kandee at 419-517-8400. The entire congregation is warmly invited and encouraged to attend.

From the Rabbi’s Desk At this time of the year, we often invoke God’s name, and, in some way, turn our thoughts to Him, in whatever way we conceive of our God. I just came across a piece I wrote a number of years ago that was published in the Calgary newspaper, that, I think bears re-reading. I hope that it will stimulate further thought at this holy time of the year.

“It is relatively easy today to find examples of people or nations profaning the name of God by using His “authority” to oppress others. Those who would have us believe that they know exactly what God wants them to do, especially when it concerns harming others, give religion, in general, a bad name. Nevertheless, this should not serve as an excuse to deny God’s existence. We need God – in whatever form we determine that Higher Power to be. A true and honest faith in God enables one to fully realize his or her human potential. In addition, it can help us to avoid the idolatries of the day – money, power, and especially dangerous – worship of the self.

Throughout human history, we can look back at events which can be explained by sociological and economic causes. As a Jew, I could try to explain the Holocaust strictly in such terms. But when I look more deeply into how the Holocaust came to be, I cannot ignore the philosophical underpinnings of the Nazis, which where based on a denial of God’s existence, which led to self-worship, and ultimately, to the most profound period of human depravity, which still affects our world even today.

No one ever said faith in God is easy. Many years ago, my wife and I lost a child at the age of five and onehalf months. I remember it being a time of terrible turmoil for us and our four other children. Our faith in a loving and compassionate God, along with our community, helped us endure. Do I question my God? Am I sometimes angry with Him? Do I often challenge Him? Do I ponder His ways? Of course! But I cannot ignore Him or pretend that He does not exist, for then I would have no hope; nor would Humanity. The power of God is carried through us, His children. Let us use it wisely.”

I hope that this may give you some food for thought, as we transition from the High Holy Days to the beautiful holiday of Sukkot.

DOWN TO EARTH The High Holy Days are the spiritual climax of our year, occurring in the month of Tishrei which is saturated with holiday after holiday. From the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur, which is Yom Hadin, The Day of Judgment, we hardly have a chance to recover, to catch our breath from this spiritual “high” of the High Holy Days, before Sukkot is upon us 5 days later.

Although there are similarities between Sukkot and the High Holy Days, and some even contend that the High Holy Days extend through Hoshana Rabba, the 7th day of Sukkot, nevertheless Sukkot, known as Z’man Simchateinu – The Time of Our Rejoicing, comes in stark contrast to the preceding High Holy Days, even as their very names suggest – Day of Judgment – Time of Rejoicing.

On Yom Kippur we are confident that God will accept our sincere prayers, & grant us a good life, reflected in the Vidui/Confessional with the quote from Numbers 14: 20, “lhrcsf h,jkx " "I have pardoned as you have asked.” But on Sukkot we are brought down to earth and reminded that life, like the sukkah, is fragile. So we beseech God, in the words of Psalm 27 to “shelter us in His sukkah…in times of trouble” as God protected our ancestors during their 40-year sojourn in the desert. Symbolically the sukkah we build is deliberately flimsy.

Similarly on the 7th day of Sukkot, Hoshana Rabba, we again indulge in an earthy ritual ie. the beating of 5 aravot/willow branches on the floor and the sides of the synagogue’s bimah. This leaves them bare and exposed, as we feel our human frailty. But the willows are mouth-shaped, symbolic of the potential power of the prayers of our mouths, to invoke God’s protection.

On Shemini Atzeret, the 8th day from Sukkot, the liturgical highlight is Tefilat Geshem, the Prayer for Rain during which the Hazzan, like on the High Holy Days, is robed in white and the melodies are reminiscent of Ne’ilah, the closing service of Yom Kippur. The Prayer for Rain elevates Shemini Atzeret to a Day of Judgment like Yom Kippur, in that water equals life. However, the melody for the Rain Prayer contains subtle musical differences from Ne’ilah. The further we move from Yom Kippur’s intensity, the more liable we are to recall that life can be fragile, and we become less confident of God’s acceptance. This is reflected in the recurrent usage of a musical phrase ending on the 5th note of the scale, rather than the 1st note known as the tonic. The return to the 1st note would indicate finality, completion, even confidence, whereas ending on the 5th leaves us hanging, waiting, anticipating…

As we anticipate the next Hebrew month, Cheshvan, we come down to earth with a jolt, for Cheshvan is a spiritual anti-climax, after Tishrei’s rapid succession of holidays. But the residue of the High Holy Days that is found in Sukkot, helps mitigate the spiritual wilderness that is Cheshvan. Our challenge then is to find enough of a reservoir of spiritual connectedness to last through Cheshvan till Pesach in 6 months time, and perhaps all year through, till the next High Holy Days come round again.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL B’nai Israel Relgious School is off to a great start! We are excited about all of the new programming for our students. October is full of enlightening experiences for all. The 7th and 8th grade boys will be providing and serving a lunch to the people at the Cherry Street Mission. This mitzvah project will prove to be very beneficial to all involved. Our Torah Tots students will have a fun visit from the Toledo Zoo Van on Oct 14 to coincide with learning about Noah’s Ark. Our seventh graders are beginning a book club with our friends from Shomer Emunim about the Holocaust. The older students will have the opportunity to hear from an Israeli Ambassador on Oct 21st, while the 5-7th graders will go to The Holocaust Museum in Detroit with Cantor Lichterman. The confirmation class is joined with our friends from Shomer Emunim for the first fifteen weeks of school learning about comparative religion, going on field trips to other places of worship, as well as having guest speakers on various topics. Some topics are Judaism and the law, Jewish bioethics, Russian Jewry, a Jewish approach to death and dying, special needs, and current issues in Israel. We want to thank Catie Sack and Shayna Zack for being our special guest speakers on the first day to discuss their Israel and Poland experiences.

A Peek at Last Week

A Look Ahead

We had so much fun learning all about Rosh Hashanah! After story time, the kids loved learning about the shofar and making shofar noises! We also talked about apples and honey and how the yummy snacks symbolize a sweet new year. Craft time included making Rosh Hashanah plates and coloring some awesome holiday necklaces. The Hebrew letter of the week was the letter “resh” so we talked about other words that start with resh and colored our reshes red. Toward the end of the morning our Torah Tots got to eat some delicious apples and honey, enjoyed music time learning songs like “Boker Tov” and “Tapuchim u’d’vash”, and made some great sukkah decorations!

Next time we meet, we will be learning all about Sukkot! We will be doing a lot of fun Sukkot-related crafts with fruits and vegetables, learn a new song and Hebrew letter, and visiting the sukkah to shake the lulav and etrog!

REMINDERS Join us on November 30 at 5:30 pm for a wonderful Shabbat dinner. Your children will lead the blessings and we will use Challah covers and Kiddush cups they have made. It promises to be a wonderful evening!

WE HONOR OUR B’NAI MITZVAH Nathan Podolsky Will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, October 13, 2012 - 27 Tishri, 5773 Nathan Podolsky will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday morning, October 13, 2012, at Congregation B’nai Israel. Nathan is the son of Michael and Leslie Podolsky, brother of Emma and Lucas, and the grandson of Terry and Sam Roth, Lois and Norman Eisner, and Jeanne Podolsky. He is also the grandson of Norman Podolsky, of blessed memory.

Nathan attended the Stone Hebrew Academy, and he is now an eighth grade honor student at Timberstone Junior High School, where he enjoys participating on the Quiz Bowl and Power of the Pen teams. He currently plays French horn in the Timberstone eighth grade band. Nathan loves playing tennis, and he has competed in many local tournaments. In his spare time, Nathan likes to read, play basketball and hang out with his friends. He volunteered at the Sylvania Public Library this summer, helping with the kids’ summer reading program. He also attended Camp Ramah in Canada for three summers.

Nathan would like to thank Rabbi Saks and Cantor Lichterman for all their help, and he looks forward to sharing his special day with family and friends.

Dahlia Zack Will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, October 27, 2012 - 11 Heshvan, 5773 Dahlia Arielle Zack will be called to the torah as a Bat Mitzvah, at Congregation B'nai Israel on Saturday, October 27th. Dahlia is the daughter of Dave and Dena Zack, the sister to Shayna and Sam, and the granddaughter of Allen Zack, Joan Mangold (z"l), and Beryl and Joan Nusbaum.

Dahlia is a graduate of the David S. Stone Hebrew Academy and is presently an eighth grade honor student at McCord Junior High. She enjoys volleyball, reading, spending her summers at Camp Ramah in Canada, creating art, and hanging with family and friends. Dahlia is looking forward to volunteering for the Friendship Circle this year.

Alexa is the daughter of David and Michelle Bader, sister of Kyle and the granddaughter of Dr. Gerald and Rochelle Bader of Sarasota, Florida and Cantor Bruce and Miriam Wetzler of Boca Raton, Florida.

Alexa is a seventh grade honor student at Timberstone Junior High, where she is on Student Council and a member of the Cheerleading squad. In her free time, Alexa enjoys twirling baton competitively for the Sylvania Twirling Stars as well as dancing and spending time with her friends and family. She also enjoys spending her summers with all her friends at Camp Ramah in Canada.

Alexa is looking forward to celebrating her Bat Mitzvah with all of her family and friends.

INTRAFAITH BLOOD DRIVE Sunday, October 28, 2012 Mark your calendar for the annual Intrafaith Blood Drive. This is a joint effort among the synagogues in the Toledo Area. The annual drive is Sunday, October 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Temple Shomer Emunim.

For information please call Devorah Shulamit coordinator for Intrafaith & chairperson for Congregation B’nai Israel 419-841-4652. Our goal is a minimum of 60 pints of whole blood. We will be able to do double reds.

Donating blood is a mitzvah. Its part of our Jewish heritage to help others as stated in the meanings of Tzedakah & Tikkun Olam. Volunteers are needed to make phone calls, donate & work for a three hour shift.

Lunch will be provided for all the volunteers. Please reach out & touch someone by helping them live a healthier, fuller & a more productive life.
