Notes from the Cantor Losing the 'Hay' Many who attended our Shabbat service on October 6th - Shabbat Bereishit – the first Shabbat of our Torah reading cycle, have asked for a copy of my drash/sermon. I usually speak from brief notes, so I have tried to recreate that drash as best I remember. In response to your requests, I will also try to have some future sermons available on our website.

In the Torah’s Creation story, for each day it states, ‫ וירא אלהים כי טוב‬- “Vayar Elohim ki tov – God saw that it was good.” For the third day this is stated twice twice.. Therefore, Jews historically have favored Tuesday for celebrating simchas such as weddings, etc.

As good as Tuesday is, Friday is even better. Not only does it twice say “ki tov - it was good” good”,, it says “tov m’od – it was extremelyy good!” (Genesis 1:31). It is so described since mankind, the pinnacle of God’s creation, was created then, and without man there would be no story to tell, no Torah.

All the working days besides Friday are called "day 1", "day 2", etc. Only the sixth day is described as “ha-shishi – THE 6th day”. THE is written with the letter ‫ ה‬- hay which is also short for ‘God’ as in ‘Hashem’ or YHVH which has two letters hay hay.. We can conclude then that because of mankind, the Hebrew letter ‘hay’ was added to the sixth day’s account of creation.

Immediately after creation, man’s downward spiral of moral disintegration begins. In the notorious forbidden fruit account, Adam blames Eve for his sin and Eve blames the serpent in a classic ‘pass the buck’ case. Adam says, ‫האשה אשר נתת ﬠמדי היא נתנה לי מן הﬠץ ואוכל‬‫“ האשה‬ha’isha asher natata imadi, hee natna li min ha’ets, va’ochel".

Translated, "the woman you placed beside me gave me from the tree, and I ate.” Eve says, “hanachash hishi’ani vo’ochel – the serpent tempted me and I ate.”, (Genesis 3:12-13). Note that the three words “nachash – serpent,” “hishi’ani – tempted,” and “isha – woman, are onomatopoeiac and alliterate - they sound like their meaning and imitate the same sounds, and the word “hishi’ani – tempted” is a play on words, spelled almost identically to “isha – woman.”

Adam receives his name since he was created ‫ מין האדמה‬- "min "min ha’adamah – from the ground.” ground.”,, (Genesis 2:7). I am fascinated by that letter ‘hay’ and would like to suggest, as is the central theme of this drash, that once Adam and Eve sinned against God, which precipitated mankind’s moral decline, they lost the letter ‫ ה‬- hay from the word adamah adamah,, ie. they lost their divinity divinity,, having been created in the Divine Image. God had so much hope for mankind; yet it all unraveled.

In response to their sins, God calls out to Adam, ‫ איכה‬- "ayeka – where are you?”, (Genesis 3:9). Did God not know where Adam was?

God was seeking Adam’s moral stance, not his location. Yet, as bad as Adam and Eve’s failure to take responsibility for their actions was, humankind’s moral decline is far further exacerbated by Cain’s notorious fratricide of his younger brother Abel in a rage of jealousy, (Genesis 4:9). Here, instead of God asking Cain “ayeka”, as He did Adam, the last two letters ‫ כ‬and ‫ ה‬are dropped and, in a play on words God exasperatedly and rhetorically demands to know in two simple letters, ‫ אי‬- "Ay Hevel achicha? Where is your brother Abel?”

And in yet another play on words, God adds, “Meh asita? Kol d’may achicha tsoakim elai min ha’adamah – What have you done? The sound of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground,” (Genesis 4:10). That same "adamah" - g ground from which they were formed, of which man lost the ‘hay’ of Divinity through his moral decline.

The same word “ayeka” is repeated (with different vowels) in Parshat Devarim (Deuteronomy 1: 12) which is always read on Shabbat Hazon before Tisha B’av, our national day of tragedy, and again in the Book of Lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah read on Tisha B’av. In these contexts, "ayeka"/"aychah" becomes a cry of anguish, of fear and trepidation in the face of tragedy, moral decline and physical destruction.

Where else does this Hebrew letter ‘hay’ play a significant role that hints of Divinity? When Abram and Sarai accepted God, God called upon them to “be a blessing” (Genesis 12:3) to the world. Then their names are changed with the addition of the letter ‘hay,’ ‫אברם‬ - Abram to ‫ אברהם‬- AbraHam (Genesis 17:5) and similarly ‫ שרי‬Sarai to ‫ שרה‬SaraH (Genesis 17:15). Now even their very names contained GOD’s name, reflecting their Divine affirmation through which they brought monotheism to the world, while being charged with ‘being a blessing.’ What Adam, Eve and Cain had lost or forfeited, our ancestors Abraham and Sarah regained.

Now, as we have entered the new Jewish year, and with the approach of Hanukkah, "Chag Ha’Or" - the Holiday of Light, our charge is to restore the ‘hay’ to our People and to the world, as did Abraham and Sarah. Let us spread the light of Hashem as did our Maccabee forebears. And in the haftorah of the same Shabbat Bereishit of October 6th, Isaiah showed us the way, “keraticha v’tsedek – I have called to you in righteousness...Hashem chafets l’maan tsidko yagdil Torah v’yadir – God seeks our righteousness by which all Torah shall be exalted.” (Isaiah 42:6, 20)

President's Message The Power of Words As president of the congregation, I sometimes have the task of resolving disputes often as a result of conversations or words that were said that did not settle well with the other party. We are all guilty at one time or another of saying something to someone that we wish we could take back what we had said. To that end, I would like to address the power of words.

Words are so much more that vocalized sounds that we utter. Words convey real power, emotions, meaning and so much more. Words have been used and misused since biblical times. According to Proverbs 12:6, “our words have the power to destroy and the power to build up”. I was taught as a child by my parents to be so careful about what I say to others. I recall my mother’s words of wisdom saying that one who is hit by a fist or injured in a fight recovers and eventually forgets the incident once the wounds are healed and time has gone by. Malicious words, on the other hand, can inflict wounds for life. Virtually every one of us can recall words spoken long ago that hurt our feelings or in some cases caused our mind and soul to be damaged for life. How many times have we seen families, friends and relations torn apart over words?

Words and the tone of our words have the ability to sooth and give comfort and also bring tears and wounds to the soul. The inflection of our voice and our facial expression also can have great meaning to another person. How many times in life have we wished could just erase a word that we said to someone? Jodie Picoult, in her work, Salem Falls, said, “Words are like eggs we drop from great heights; you can no more call them back than ignore the mess they leave when they fall”.

We are all empowered with the responsibility of how we interact with one another both with our words and with our body language and facial gesticulations. One of the essential lessons that we learned from our parents is, “do unto others as you would do unto yourself”.

As humans, we all have been guilty of saying something to someone that we deeply regretted.

Do we always do unto our family, friends, and acquaintances during our busy lives and at work that we would want done to ourselves?

When we are having a bad day or being preoccupied by personal problems, do we take it out on others by the look on our face, the tone of our voice, or by showing disinterest? Do we articulate the most meaningful and compassionate words to console someone in a time of need?

As humans, we have all been guilty of saying something to someone that we deeply regretted. It is so easy to fall into that trap when we are angry or have a disagreement with another person. It is so important for all of us to stop and think before we talk. We always need to think of the implications of what we say and we should always be aware of how we would feel if those words were said to us.

Written and spoken words help us negotiate through the journey of life. Our words have immense power and meaning to others. Words have the power to bring comfort, joy and warmth, to tear down and destroy, to build confidence and strength, to belittle and wound, to heal an aching heart or to cause heartache and stress.

As congregants, spouses, parents, grandparents, and as friends, we should always be cognizant of what we say and that our words carry enormous weight, in what we say and how those words affect one another. Choose well.

Sisterhood Opening Meeting, Sept. 23, 2018 The meeting opened with Ann Rosenberg welcoming all of the Sisterhood members in attendance. She introduced several people to give reports which included the Women's Retreat, the Rummage Sale, and the Sisterhood Gift Shop. Ann then introduced two representatives from Merle Norman Cosmetics who have a shop on Monroe Street in Toledo. Their purpose was to feature the transformative power of a cosmetic makeover. They demonstrated a number of facial products to use and explained the use and purpose of each.

The women enjoyed a delicious continental breakfast of yogurt cups with granola and an assortment of berries, bagel cuts, cakes, orange juice, coffee and tea.

Sukkah Build: The weather cooperated for this year's Sukkah build. The men of our congregation began the project at 8:30 in the morning and made quick work of building the CBI Sukkah for all of us to enjoy. A special thanks to all the men who came together to fulfill this mitzvah.

Youth Education & News Notes from our Principal Our students at David S. Stone Religious School are continuing to enhance their Jewish learning through active learning in their classrooms. One of our classes enjoy learning about the Parsha through acting out plays in the classroom. This is a hands on activity that goes on often in Paulette Sherline’s classroom. I always see the students smiling as I walk by the classroom window when they are working on their Parsha play for the week.

Everyone enjoyed the first of many "Bless the Pet’s” program last month. The USY’ers had a great time making homemade dog treats for the event.

The older students have been keeping up with current events in Israel, Israel’s history, Maimonide’s 13 Principles and continued partnership with Israel.
