Notes from the Cantor……………………………………….

RECOGNITION AND CELEBRATION I am writing this article while preparing for Sukkot, during an all too short lull after the exhausting marathon of the High Holidays. Whoever planned for Sukkot just 5 days after Yom Kippur, did not have us clergy and synagogue staff in mind! Congregants can’t catch a break either, so it’s wonderful to see those who return for Sukkot services, having already just spent so much time in shul. This way some of the “high” of your High Holidays lingers just a little longer.

Additionally, this year the 5 days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot were abruptly interrupted by the ‘intrusion’ of Shabbat just two days after Yom Kippur. Give us a break! Shabbat is supposed to be the spiritual climax of the week, but 2 days after Yom Kippur?

While most of the responsibility for the multiple services and programs we offer at this time of year rests upon my slim shoulders as CBI’s sole full-time clergy, frankly, it takes a whole tribe of devoted congregants to produce this quantity and quality of work. Their diligence is often behind the scenes, with the result that what you experience as an end product after months of planning and prep, seems to flow smoothly (ok perhaps with the exception of the sanctuary a/c!).

I therefore am dedicating this column to these many devoted congregants, so you can be aware of just what it takes, and who these people are. Please make the effort to thank them, and if I’ve omitted anyone, please understand it is inadvertent, or I simply was not informed, and in the spirit of this season of forgiveness, kindly forgive me:  Minyan Leader/Gabbai - Howard Rosenbaum - makes many calls and devotes huge effort to ensure honors are filled, accommodating personal preferences like ‘not too early’ or ‘not too late’, spoken or unspoken, all while still maintaining twice daily minyanim all year! (We wish Howard the strength to return soon to his familiar post!)  Guest Officiants - Rabbi Jason Miller and Sam Falk – for the 4th year we enjoyed a familiar repartee and modus operandi  Youth Services - Sam Falk – meaningful and enjoyable  Solos/Duets - Rachel Intrater, Cheryl Rothschild, David Friedes, Lila Goldman – added such beauty  Haftarot - Noah Leizerman (our youngest ever on the High Holidays), Howard Rosenbaum, David Weinberg, Matthew Rothschild, Nathan Podolsky, Samuel Richards, Eleanora Richards, Haley Smith, Quinn Murphy, Jeremy Davis, Adam Davis, Dahlia Zack  David Weinberg - helped immensely in the absence of Howard Rosenbaum; it is gratifying to have congregants like David who are knowledgeable and ready to step up!  Gabbaim – (in Howard’s absence) - Fagie Benstein, Miriam Beckerman, Jerry Russell - made sure services flowed seemlessly  Ushers/greeters/bimah sitters – assigned by ritual committee and board  Ritual Committee Chair – Greg Davis, assisted by Ellen Federman  Martyrology Service - Fagie Benstein – has arranged meaningful services for over 20 years, with participants Cheryl and Steve Rothschild, Paul Causman, Tom Helberg, Adam Davis, and a moving r epor t fr om her tr ip to Poland and Israel by USY president Dahlia Zack  David Zack - smooth shofar blowing and long tekiyot gedolot ring in our ears long after the sanctuary has emptied out  Home Hospitality - Bauers, Garbers, Rosenbergs, Zacks, Zuckers  Kiddushim - Miriam Beckerman - devotes a huge amount of time to our kitchen and culinary needs, assisted by Karen McQuade - we enjoy nourishing Kiddushim every Shabbat and Holiday  Maintenance - Larry Johnson and Diane McGee keep our building immaculate. The health depar tment inspector commented that they had never seen such a clean commercial kitchen!  Office/School - Chuck Traugott over sees our entir e oper ation, assisted by Rhoda Miller, Leslie Podolsky and Kim Brody, pr incipal of our Religious School, all of whom go way beyond to fill in as needed  Transliterated Songbook - Miriam Beckerman, Alix Greenblatt, Paul Causman - congr egants made extensive use of this new publication which includes commentary designed to enhance participation  Torah Holders/Yom Kippur Appeal/Donors – your generosity including to the Cantors Discretionary Fund is deeply appreciated  Sukkah – Jim Cihak, Men’s Club, students of our religious school make our Sukkah beautiful  Two gorgeous new benches outside on patio - donated by Michael Tamor and Helen Michaels in honor of our 150th anniversary. Enjoy them as I have; they are smooth and comfortable and in peaceful surroundings (continued on page 3) 2

President’s Message…………………………….……….

Inaction is also a choice, often a poor one.

With the high holidays just completed, the ideas and ideals contained in our prayers and in the sermons are still fresh. My own thoughts have returned to Rabbi Miller’s sermon on Yom Kippur morning when he cited examples of when people acted in moments of crisis. But in such moments, not everyone will act. Why is it only some who spring forward? The choice is seemingly automatic, done subconsciously, and with little or no opportunity to mull over the consequences. Yet there must be some background beyond the survival instinct. Our subconscious decision is assuredly informed by all we have experienced and learned. The content of the prayers we read, the message of the Torah and Haftorah, the promises we made, all the ideas and ideals of the high holidays, are part of us now, and are there if needed to direct future actions.

Sometimes we have time to decide what our action might be before a deadline. An obvious example involves the looming election. Some have decided that neither major party candidate is acceptable. Perhaps they intend to support a third party candidate or write-in a name [feel free to use me]. I have a hard time believing that this action will have any real impact on the behavior of the eventual winner, who is unlikely to lose any sleep pondering the meaning of such votes. But at least an action was taken. The folks who really make me scratch my head are the ones who will not vote since no candidate meets their lofty ideals. They need one with no sins of commission or omission, one who is infallible, one with the purest of thoughts and intentions, and who exudes warmth and compassion. Apparently they have not studied history, nor have they much insight into us humans. Their inability to find something of value in either candidate leads them to inaction. As a citizen of our democracy, they should strive harder to determine which candidate will best preserve our country and constitution. Their unwillingness to do this is a poor choice that may affect us all.

Often, we decide to act, but without a particular deadline in mind. With 5777 only a few days old, our promises made as we worshipped, or in moments of private prayer or meditation, are still mostly waiting to be fulfilled. When is it time to begin? Later is always an easy choice. We often think and plan as though our time is limitless, yet we know that is not true. As your mother told you, don't put off until tomorrow what should be done today. Somehow, tomorrow became today, and will soon be yesterday. Will you have begun to fulfill your promises by then? Choosing inaction today is not an absence of making a choice, it is a choice. Very often, it is a poor choice.

For many of us, promises made for 5777 involve choosing to act in relation to our Judaism. Perhaps you resolved to come to celebrate Shabbat with your congregation more often. It would be great to see each other on a Shabbat morning. But life is often complicated and busy. You may not be able to be there, or I may not. Maybe Friday evening would work. If not, we can still light the Shabbat candles at home. Even a few minutes of your time tells your children, your spouse, your friend, your parents that this has meaning for you. Choosing to wait and act later on your resolutions, even without announcing it, is also a statement to them, and to yourself. I hope we can all of us keep our promises, to ourselves, and to each other, this year.

“Maimonidies: A Man for all Seasons ” Presenter: Dr. Blair Grubb Dr. Grubb is a professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Toledo, Health Science Campus where he is also director of the Electrophysiology Program and the Syncope and Autonomic Disorders Clinic at the University Medical Center. He has authored over 240 scientific papers as well as 5 books, and 35 book chapters. He has received the “Medical Professional of the Decade” award from the British Heart Rhythm Society and Arrhythmia Alliance in 2015, as well as the University of Toledo’s “Dean’s Award for Career Achievement” for 2015. In 2016 he was given the Dion D. Raftopoulos/Sigma Xi Award for “Outstanding Research”.

Youth & Education News…………………………………….

David S. Stone Religious School Our visit in October from a former “lone soldier” was an incredible experience for 6-10th grade students from the entire community.

They were fortunate to hear firsthand from former Sgt. Nickoline Larsen. She spoke at CBI and stayed to join our 6-10th grade classes for an informal question and answer session. This was a truly meaningful event for all.

We have a lot going on this month at David S. Stone Religious School. November 6 is the Northwest Ohio Jewish Book Festival. We will walk over to Shomer Emunim from 10:30-11:30 a.m. for the program. Students will be divided into three age groups to meet with authors. Parents are welcome to join us for the morning. Our 6 th and 7th graders will go to Shomer Emunim at 9:30 a.m. to set up and participate in a bake sale to benefit Jewish Family Service’s Music & Memory Program. Please see article on the next page about the program. This is a great mitzvah project for our B’nai Mitzvah kids to be involved in and work together with their friends from other congregations.

Our 8th grade class will start a two month Israel unit with Sharon Lapitsky. Sharon is the Director of Jewish Community Relations Council of Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo and also sends out the Israelight Weekly News for Toledo. We are looking forward to Sharon teaching this interactive unit to our students.

Our parent/child class for ages 3 and under is off to a great start. Students and parents have enjoyed interactive activities pertaining to the Fall holidays. Megan VanDyke is eager to engage your children in fun Jewish learning, through art, stories, dance, music and play. We are looking forward to our next class on Sunday, November 13 at 10:30 a.m.

A lone soldier is a person who serves in the Israeli Army who has no family living in Israel. On October 9, 2016, Nickoline Larsen, a lone soldier, spoke to students and described her life as a soldier living in a country without any family close by.

The sixth grade religious school classes from all three synagogues are holding a bake sale to benefit Jewish Family Service’s Music & Memory Program. As a certified agency, JFS provides seniors suffering from Alzheimers and other forms of cognitive and physical impairment with free iPods loaded with their favorite music. These musical favorites tap deep into their memories that can re-energize seniors, enabling them to feel like themselves and stay more in the present.

It is the goal of Jewish Family Service to improve people’s overall health and well-being by enhancing their lives through music. The sixth graders thought a bake sale during the Jewish Book Festival on November 6 would be a wonderful way to gain maximum exposure while raising funds for our Music & Memory program. Our goal is $150 which will be put towards the purchase of iPod shuffles/headsets, cables, chargers and iTunes gift cards thus allowing us to serve more clients in our Jewish community.

Artem Zaurov

is the son of Greg and Irina Zaurov and older brother to Jennifer Zaurov. He is thrilled to be the newest B'nai Israel member. Artem and his parents came to Toledo, Ohio from the Soviet Union in 1993. At that time, it was unheard of for someone with special needs to attend school in Russia. So, when Artem got the chance to attend school for the first time in America at the age of 5-years-old, he was ecstatic! Over the years, Artem attended religious Sunday school and was a longtime member of the Friendship Circle. A fun fact about him is that he was the very first child with special needs to have a Bar Mitzvah at B’nai Israel, thanks to the help of Rabbi Ungar and Hazzan Jamie Gloth. Artem graduated from Rogers High School. In 2013, with the help of Cantor Lichterman and his recommendation, Artem went on Taglit-Birthright’s first Yachad special needs Israel trip. He was the first man with special needs from Ohio to sign-up and attend the program when it started. “It was the best time of my life,” he says. .

Artem has been a full-time volunteer with Aspiring Hands for many years. He helps out with tasks all over Toledo. In his free time, Artem likes to play basketball, bowling, and disc golf with his Special Olympics teams. He also likes to listen to music, play video games, and hang out with friends.

Artem’s parents are very proud of him for joining the B'nai mishpacha.

Jim Wilson

Hello! Jim Wilson here, I'm not exactly a new member since I first became a member in 1987. I celebrated my adult bar mitzvah at CBI in 1990. We decided to move to Hillsdale, Michigan in 1996. At that time, I dropped my membership at CBI because the distance would present a hardship. From our new home to Kenwood Blvd. was approximately one hour and 30 minutes away. I looked for a shul closer to our new home, but there was none. So for the next 20 years I would drive to Toledo for the High Holiday services.

Ruth Gold then invited me and other classmates to celebrate our adult bar/bat mitzvah anniversary with an Aliyah. Cantor Lichterman, whom I really like and does a great job, kept telling me he would like to see more of me at services. I started attending weekly Shabbat services and was able to find a short cut from my house to CBI, which only takes one hour! After attending services for nearly a year I thought it was time to rejoin, and here I am back home again.

Dear Staff and Congregation of B’nai Israel, I think I can speak on behalf of my entire family in saying how very appreciative we are of how this congregation took care of my father, Richard Lazar. Having no family left in town, Richard really came to count on all of you as his family. It was good for him to be expected to be at shul, to know people were watching out for him. In fact, the first call I made when it was becoming clear that there was a problem was to David Weinberg. When he confirmed that no one had seen my father at shul over Shabbat, I knew for sure that something was wrong. This is how important you were to him.

Later, we learned that the night he died, he had been out to dinner with his Thursday night minyan friends. How wonderful that this was his last act – to be with friends from B’nai Israel.

My grandparents helped found this shul. My parents were married there in 1965. I attended the Hebrew Academy there and spent many years in Kadima and USY in that building and now this last support of my father. I thank all of you for being such a special and central part of my family’s lives.

Kitchen Corner

SWEET NOODLE KUGEL

Pre heat oven to 350 degrees and butter a 10x13 pan.

Mix in large bowl: 5 extra large eggs (or 7 large eggs) 1 quart half and half ½ cup brown sugar 2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1 ½ tbs. salt ½ tsp. ground pepper 1 cup ricotta cheese (whole milk) 1 cup raisins Cook 1 pound egg noodles per package directions. Drain and mix in with the custard and pour into pan.

Topping: I use anything that I have in the pantrygraham crackers, left over ice cream cones, cereal, etc. Put in food processor and mix with some melted butter and cover the kugel with it.

Cover the pan with foil and place in a water bath.

Cook for 45 minutes at 350 degrees.

Remove foil and cook for another 45 minutes.

You can make ahead and freeze this recipe! To reheat- place in water bath and cook for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

Please note: The office will be closed on November 24 and 25 for Thanksgiving.
