Holidays and Sukkot, and the month of Cheshvan which has nothing special in it, and lasts till the 3rd month of our calendar – Kislev, towards the end of which occurs the holiday of Hanukkah.

If we rearrange 3 of its 4 letters, it spells God’s This Torah portion is perfectly placed name YHVH. In other words, how can near the beginning of the Torah, when one “be a blessing”?

By, for example, in our Jewish calendar cycle, we are in a not abandoning God, or your shul, or great “lull.” This anti- climactic gap falls the community, during this spiritual lull between the intensity of the Hebrew in our calendar; ie. don’t wait for the month of Tishrei with the High next High Holidays to come round in a

There are daily minyanim twice a day; there are wonderful weekly programs listed elsewhere in our bulletin; next week there is “Shabbat Luck” to help you turn Friday night into shabbat by connecting with other members whom you might not otherwise know; there are weekly adult education classes; our weekly Friday night and shabbat services often include special programming you might find worthwhile – always followed by a full sit down kiddush-lunch - tot shabbat, family shabbat, new baby shabbat, new member shabbat, Rabbi Jason Miller shabbat, Rabbi Alan Sokobin and other guest speakers, musical Shabbat, USY Shabbat & on & on.

In this parsha Lech L’cha, both Abram and Sarai’s names are changed through the addition or substitution of the Hebrew letter ‘hay.’ Written like this -‫ה‬it is open to the left, the direction in which Hebrew is written, meaning forwards, or down. We have only 2 choices in the way we live our lives – to go forward, or to stagnate which is like going down.

During this spiritually dormant time in our Jewish calendar, let us reenergize our Judaism by following the example of Abraham and Sarah in this week’s Torah portion Lech L’cha, and being a blessing to God, ourselves, our synagogue, our community, and others. I hope to see you all at shul.

RABBINIC INSIGHTS FROM RABBI JASON Putting the THANKS in Thanksgiving While there might not be any Jewish holidays in the month of November, there is a significant secular festival nevertheless. As I mentioned in my Rosh Hashanah sermon about Sukkot, Thanksgiving has long been my favorite holiday. The rituals of Thanksgiving – family coming together, reuniting with old friends, eating too much turkey, and watching football – have always given me something to look forward to after the whirlwind of Jewish fall holidays comes to an end.

Thanksgiving also provides all Americans with the opportunity to take stock of our lives and to give thanks to God for our blessings. Did you know that the Pilgrims based the Thanksgiving festival on the Jewish holiday of Sukkot that we observed only a few weeks ago? The religious Pilgrims learned of the autumnal celebration of Sukkot, or Tabernacles, from their bibles.

The secular American side of me takes advantage of Thanksgiving for its strong emphasis on family, food, football, and fun; catching up with cousins and checking in with friends who have moved out of town. The Jewish side of me takes advantage of the opportunity to have one more day of "Sukkot" before winter sets in. The Thanksgiving festival is a time to acknowledge our own vulnerability, to continue the work of teshuvah (repentance), and to give thanks for all we have.

Maimonides teaches that God’s greatest demand of humans is that we know to be thankful to God for having created us. As you sit around your Thanksgiving table this year, I hope you will reflect on the blessings in your life and what you can do in the coming year to be more generous. I hope that in addition to the blessings of Hamotzi at the beginning of the meal and Birkat Hamazon at its conclusion, you and your family will also say “Modim Anachnu Lach” and recite the Shehechiyanu benediction to express your gratitude to God. Allow me to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped ensure that the High Holidays at our kehillah kedosha (holy congregation) were a success. Working as part of the "bimah team" alongside Cantor Lichterman and Sam Falk for the second year was a pleasure and honor for me. Elissa joins me in thanking those congregants who hosted us for a meal during the holidays.

Finally, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I encourage you to share your family's simchas with your B'nai Israel family.

Let Cantor Lichterman know if you have a milestone to mark and an aliyah or other bimah honor will be awarded to you. As we go from strength to strength as a congregation, I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a continued blessed year.

Good One, whose kindness never stops; Kind One, whose loving acts have never failed – always have we placed our hope in You.

Making the Arts Relevant: My (Jewish) Journey to the Toledo Museum of Art Monday, November 3, 2014 7:00 p.m. at B’nai Israel No Charge ~ RSVP to (419) 517-8400 Adam Levine, Ph.D., came to Toledo from the Metropolitan Museum of Art as the recipient of the Toledo Museum of Art’s Mellon Fellowship. Following this prestigious two-year appointment, he accepted the position of Assistant Director.

Dr. Levine received bachelor’s degrees in art history, anthropology, and mathematics and social sciences from Dartmouth College, and earned both doctorate and master’s degrees in art history from the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

A Series of Three Classes on Jewish History, Two Guys You Know About and One You Don't: Abraham, Moses, and Yochanan ben Zakai Rabbi Alan Mayor Sokobin Th.D., D.D., J.D., served as rabbi at The Temple, Congregation Shomer Emunim. Following his “retirement”, he graduated from the University of Toledo College of Law, and serves on the Law faculty. He was also the Jewish Chautauqua Society Associate Professor of History. He has authored many scholarly articles and served on several national boards and commissions.

A familiar presence at B’nai Israel, Rabbi Sokobin is a frequent and popular contributor to the programs and services at B’nai Israel.

B'NAI ISRAEL GARDEN 2014

I want to take this opportunity to thank Helen Micheals, Rachel Noleff, Michael Portnoy, Leon (and Ellie) Williams, Sue Wilson, Leah Connor, Al Mintz and Cindy Palmer, and Alice Applebaum. These volunteers have been the backbone of our Community Garden at B'nai Israel. Without them we would never have achieved success in providing fresh vegetable to the Jewish Family Service Food Panty. Kudos to those who participated in the Adopt-a-plant program. I am looking forward to next season and CBI will be seeking volunteers for both programs.

Though this year had some unforeseen setbacks, we were still able to send about 1200 pieces of veggies to the food pantry.

As I have announced to my committee, this was my last year as the garden coordinator, although certainly not my last year as a gardener.

DAVID S.STONE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL We have had numerous activities keeping our students involved in hands-on experiences to make Jewish learning exciting and engaging. Our students prepared and served lunch at The Cherry Street Mission with students from Shomer Emunim and Etz Chayim. The entire student body contributed food to make this happen. It was a very enlightening experience for our students, as well as the parent volunteers. We were fortunate to have Mindy Slutsky, Michael Podolsky, and Abe Musher-Eizenman join us for the mitzvah trip.

Our confirmation class has been working on comparative religion. They visited Rosary Cathedral and have a trip scheduled to the Hindu Temple. Thank you Alison Sherman and Leslie and Michael Podolsky for helping with this trip. It is always great to have parent involvement in our religious school. The confirmation class had insightful discussions with Rabbi Miller about comparative religion.

Our younger grades had a visit from the Toledo Zoo Van with our friends from Shomer Emunim. They have also been very busy learning about all of the fall Jewish holidays. Dara Musher-Eizenman has been teaching our students about Jewish heroes and writing letters to our current Jewish heroes, the Israeli soldiers. We are looking forward to Skype-ing with our Israeli chaverim soon.

Our kitay hay class made a movie with their teacher, Dara Musher- Eizenman about Hannah Szenesh, as part of their unit on Jewish values and Jewish heroes who exemplify these values. They had a great time making the movie and sharing it with our friends in the Partnership region in the Western Galilee.
