Notes from the Cantor ……………………………………….

“IN THE BEGINNING, GOD...”

I am writing this article right after Shabbat Bereishit - October 14th – the 1st Shabbat of the new year Torah cycle. I share this story in response to requests from several congregants for a copy of my drash from this past Shabbat. The subject was the above heading of this article, which is how the Torah begins Genesis 1: 1. I also chose this as the quote on the cover of our Torah guide as an appropriate first quote for the 54 Torah portion cycle of the 5 Books of Torah.

As the marathon of services and activities of the new Jewish year finally concludes the following story could well provide some perspective to carry us forward into the new year as memories of the intense High Holidays fade. My appreciation to Rabbi Mitch Hurwitz of Temple Sholom in Greenwich CT., from whom I adapted this story, though its origin is unknown.

In a mother’s womb were twins. The elder one asked the other, “Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Of course I do. There HAS to be something. We are probably here just to prepare for what comes later.”

“Nonsense” said the first. “There is nothing after delivery. What else could there possibly be?”

The second said, “I don’t know, but it certainly will be lighter than it is here. Maybe we will walk with our own legs, eat with our own mouths; maybe we will even have other senses that we can’t perceive right now.”

The elder replied, “That’s absurd. Walking is impossible, and eating with our mouths? Why that’s ridiculous!

The umbilical cord supplies all the nutrition we need. That cord is very short - life after delivery is impossible.”

But the younger one persisted, “Well I think there IS something, and its going to be different than here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.”

“Nonsense” replied the first. “If there is life after, then why has no one ever come back from there?

Delivery must be the end, and in the after-delivery, there is nothing but darkness, silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere!”

“Well, I’m not so sure” said the second, “certainly we will meet Mother after, and she will take care of us.” The first replied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? Ha, that’s laughable! If Mother exists, then where is she now?”

Said the second, “I think She is all around us. We are of Her, we are living in Her. Without Her, this world would not, and could not exist.”

Said the first, “Well I don’t see Her, so its only logical that She doesn’t exist.”

The second replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you just focus, and you REALLY LISTEN, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear her loving voice, calling down to us from above.”

The proposed CBI trip to Israel/Amsterdam that Hedva Romanoff and Hazzan Lichterman have been working on for next May/June 2018 has been postponed.

We are now looking at next October/November 2018 Afterall the Jewish holidays. If you know of anyone who may be interested in the new date please have them contact the Hazzan or Hedva Romanoff.

We need at least 10 couples or 20 individuals for the trip to be feasible of which at least 10 must add Amsterdam. We regret to disappoint those who were eagerly looking forward to going this May.

President’s Message…………………………….…………...

PERSONAL PRAYERS MAY BE ADDED It’s a tough world. Especially in recent years, people seem to be angry a lot. The news is full of reports of people saying awful things about others. Social media seems to magnify this behavior. It offers a loudspeaker and the promise of notoriety. It can also offer a degree of anonymity. People are insulted for their ideas, their ideals, their religion, their ethnicity, their physical characteristics, and for having the wrong friends. In the worst case, they feel forced to act. Unfortunate examples are those driven to retaliate in horrible ways, slaughtering former co-workers or students, and almost inevitably, innocent bystanders. We have all read about bullying in schools, and how the victim can suffer, even to the point of taking their own life. The behavior of groups toward others seems no better, whether it is political parties, religious sects, or countries. None of this is new, but with the constant bombardment of news and opinion, it feels like we are approaching some sort of tipping point. Man’s inhumanity to man, between peoples, and also between individuals, is enough to drive you to prayer.

I have no great insight or solution. However, when considering interactions with other individuals, I do find that I am drawn more and more to that little addition at the end of the Amidah. Next time you get to the end of the Amidah, take a look at the added prayer. You know the one, where the Siddur says, “At the conclusion of the Amidah, personal prayers may be added”. And there it is, a personal prayer for you. Of course, if it is personal, you can say what you wish. But take another look at the one in the Siddur. It has, in a nutshell, so much about how to live your life and, most especially, how to behave toward others. I always find it takes me back to our prayers and promises from the High Holidays. Following the translation in the edition of Siddur Sim Shalom that I have, it begins “My God, keep my tongue from evil, my lips from lies”.

Oh boy, those Rabbis really knew human nature. This is certainly among the hardest things one is supposed to do. Not only keep from lies, but also from evil. What is the difference? You may know something about someone that you believe is true. So why not repeat it if it is not a lie? Would it be hurtful to the person or their friends? Is there no good purpose to repeating the story? Are you saying it only to make you feel superior, or to cast the person in a bad light? If so, it is likely evil, even if true.

If that is not hard enough, the prayer continues, “Help me ignore those who would slander me.” People who are able to do this are in short supply. I wonder if there is anyone so strong as to be able to ignore every slander. Of course, we cannot ignore, yet we are called upon to do so. In essence, it is a call to rise above, to be a better person, not to have your life directed by pettiness and anger. It may be a good thing that we have a chance to pray this so often since it takes constant effort. I hope that with practice it becomes easier, and more ingrained not only in behavior, but also in thought.

Next, we pray, “Let me be humble before all”. Again, it seems so contrary to human nature. The news is full of people bragging about themselves. I find it is really hard not to brag, especially when grandchildren are the topic. Yet it is the humble person, not the braggart, we should emulate. Reflect for a moment how you wish your children or grandchildren, your parents or spouse, or yourself to behave. Of course, we would like to be shielded from those who brag, who slander, who lie, who wish to hurt us. Our instinct is to strike first. But there is nothing in this prayer suggesting that we should act. Rather, we ask the Lord to “Frustrate the designs of those who plot evil against me. Make nothing of their schemes.” Once again, we are called upon to rise above our instincts, to be better.

I’ll leave it to you to read the rest, and maybe decide how you feel about this short prayer. I have to admit that occasionally I catch myself thinking how some people need to read this prayer more often. But that totally misses the point, and at the same time shows the need for this personal prayer. If I think this is not about me, then I am wrong. This prayer is quite personal, and is for each of us, helping us redirect our thoughts, and challenging us to be better. I am hopeful that we all can move toward the ideal set before us.

B’not Mitzvah……………………………………………………….

Baylee Simone Mallin will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 at Congregation B'nai Israel. Baylee is the daughter of Michael and Gabrielle Mallin, and granddaughter of Morton & Roberta Mallin of West Chester, Ohio, and Sandra Herman of Naples, Florida. She is a loving sister to Samantha and Danielle.

Baylee is a 7th grader at Timberstone Junior High School where she is an A student in GATE, and a member of the school band playing Alto Sax. In her free time, Baylee enjoys singing, acting in theatrical productions, creating comedy sketch videos for YouTube, and spending time with her friends. Baylee is stoked to reunite with her out-of-town family and friends who will come from near and far to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah.

Eva Elizabeth LaPlante will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday afternoon, November 18, 2017 at Congregation B’nai Israel. Eva is the daughter of Daniel and Holley LaPlante, and sister to Joseph. She is the granddaughter of Allan and Janice Hasenfratz.

Eva is in 8th grade and loves music, drawing, and reading. If she is not doing one of these things, she’s most likely spoiling her cats Zeke and Mr. Pickles. With the funds she is raising for her mitzvah project to support KMMA in Kenya, a school on Rusinga Island, she is helping provide for the daily needs of its students, who are mostly orphans. She is excited to have her camp friends join her for her big day, along with the rest of her friends and family.

Rita and Michael White Rita and Michael are originally from Trenton, Michigan where they belonged to Beth Isaac Synagogue for 34 years and were very active, both wearing a variety of hats. In 2015, Beth Isaac closed and they became members at Temple B'nai Israel in Monroe, Michigan. They raised three children, enjoy their seven grandchildren and fawn over two great grandchildren. Becoming members at Congregation B'nai Israel will hopefully result in Michael's conversion...after all these years!

Stephen, Stephanie and Alexander Ashbeck The Ashbeck family moved from Los Angeles, California in November to Erie, Michigan.

They enjoy boating, and spending quality time together as a family, with their 1 year old son Alexander, and their dog Dakota.

Michael Ross W hy I Chose to Convert In the book titled “Lovesong, Becoming a Jew” by Julius Lester, the author recalls an event where while on a retreat at the Trappist Monastery a monk made the following statement: “When you know the name by which God knows you, you will know who you are.”

The book goes on to tell the autobiographical story of Julius Lester’s passionate search for that name. At the end of the search the author was able to proclaim the following: “Now I know the name by which God calls me. I am Yaakov Daniel ben Avraham v’ Sarah.

I have become who I am. I am who I always was. I am no longer deceived by the black face which stares at me from the mirror. I am a Jew.” (with Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson at Chanukah) It has been over 7 years since I first read those words by Julius Lester and the sentiment remains etched in my heart and continues to stir my soul. There were many things that I found in common with Mr. Lester as I recalled my own search for the name by which God called me. Like Lester, I was raised in the African-American community and exposed to a variety of church going experiences. For most of my childhood going to church was not an option but a mandatory weekly event that often lasted all day on Sunday and an occasional Wednesday night bible study and Friday night choir rehearsal. I was raised by my maternal grandparents and my grandmother was the daughter of a southern African Methodist Episcopal Minister. In spite of fervent Christian roots, my grandmother would often say that one day I would have to know God for myself.

This admonition gave me the freedom and courage to realize that I must go on a journey alone and perhaps contrary to my upbringing. At some point I also came to learn that my biological grandfather was in fact Jewish.

Throughout my adult life I have always found a kinship with the Jewish community. I lived in New York City after I completed law school and roomed with a Jewish guy from Cincinnati, Ohio. My wife worked for the Jewish Guild in New York and oddly enough I had been nicknamed Moses during my time in the Air Force.

It was after a time of personal trials and tribulations that I began to take my journey in search of the name by which God knew me seriously. By this time in my life I was clearly convinced that my connection to God had to be understood in the context of my own personal and cultural identity. I refused to allow this relationship to be defined solely on the basis of the color of my skin or my upbringing. I clung to the advice of my grandmother “to get to know God for myself”.

I began living as close to an observant life as I knew how and have continued to do so to this day. I have worked in a kosher kitchen and studied weekly with various Jewish advisers. With the support of my family, and to the wonderment of some I wholeheartedly embraced my identity as a Jew both culturally and religiously.

The formal conversion which took place on August 7, 2017 has allowed me to say publicly what I have been saying privately for years now.

I know the name by which God calls me. I am Moshe Emet ben Avraham v’ Sarah. I have become who I am.

I am who I always was. I am no longer deceived by the black face which stares at me from the mirror. I am a Jew. I will forever be grateful to Julius Lester for sharing his journey and allowing me to put into words what I have felt in the process. My Grandmother for not holding me hostage to her own experiences but encouraging me to seek the truth of my own God relationship and to the wonderful people known as the Jewish community who have opened their hearts, minds and souls In order to allow me to take my rightful place amongst our people.

I am married to Dr. Tisha Ross a pediatric dentist and we have two children Chanese Goodman and Michael L. Ross, seven grandchildren, Michael, Mya, Anah, Agye, Mehki, Malik, Langston and a poodle “Lucy”. We reside in Marietta, Georgia.

I am a graduate of Chapman University, Orange California, Case Western Reserve University School of Law and Harvard Business School HBX Core. I am an Air Force Veteran, former Lorain County Commissioner and former Director of Public Safety for the City of Lorain Ohio.

Religious School Updates…………………………………….

David S. Stone Religious School We have been very busy in our classroom for the first few weeks of the year. We are working on learning all about the Jewish holidays as well as mitzvahs, tzedakah and are about to begin the aleph bet. Our classroom time consists of music, art, play, games, and getting to know each other. We have fun and learn and the time just flies by.

Megan VanDyke, Preschool class Shalom Parents! We are excited to be back for another great year at David Stone Religious School. So far this year, the students have been busy learning about the holidays. The students had fun learning about Rosh Hashanah and dipping apples in paint to make their own art creations for a sweet new year! We then experienced Tashlich with Cantor Lichterman and Rabbi Rubin and also had a discussion in class about forgiveness and to think of one new way they could change how to treat a person or perform an act of kindness. Learning about Sukkot and Simchat Torah. It was fun to decorate the Sukkah, shake the lulav and etrog, and eat snacks in the Sukkah to get the full experience of this fabulous holiday during our harvest time! In the midst of getting to know the holidays more, we also have discussions about the weekly Parshas and watch videos for more explanation. Morning prayers are said together, then we split into groups with students to review the aleph bet, practice reading and writing, and of course incorporate games at their level.

L'Shana Tova!! Your Teachers Miss Hope and Miss Gina, Kindergarten - 3rd Grade class To begin the year our class has been concentrating on the fall holidays. We talked about Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, with a focus on the Shofar, repentance, the four species, and the sukkah. We also discussed a little about the yizkor prayer and the holiness of the siddur.

Rabbi Evan B. Rubin, 7th – 8th Grade class We’ve started studying the history of Israel from Abraham through World War 1. We’ll next go from World War 1 to the present. We look at maps for each stage in history to see how borders change. Every class we’ll be discussing the current situation in Israel and the Middle East, and I want the students to be able to discuss it intelligently and to understand the geography.

We’ve also discussed Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. For Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur we went through exercises on who we’ve hurt, who’s hurt us, and what it really means to repent and, even harder, change. We spent a lot of time talking about relationships with parents, and I encouraged each student to not only apologize for any hurt they caused but to talk through with parents what steps each could take to limit friction points. For sukkot, we discussed what it means to be happy as the commandment is to be happy all seven days. We tried to think through the difference between superficial, temporary happiness and a deeper happiness that can carry us through life, and how Judaism is all about that deeper happiness.
