THE POWER OF MUSIC IV and ISRAEL TRIP As we celebrate Israel’s 70th anniversary, Israel’s world famous Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) has appointed a new director to take over from legendary Indian conductor Zubin Mehta. Mehta, now aged 81, is retiring after almost sixty years with the orchestra. The new appointee is Israeli Lahav Shani, age 29, who begins in 2020.

Shani is a rising star on the world classic music scene. He first performed with the IPO as a piano soloist when he was 16, and at age 25 was invited to conduct their prestigious season opener. Later this year, Shani will also become conductor of Holland’s Rotterdam Orchestra.

The IPO performed its inaugural concert on December 26, 1936. Founded by Polish violin virtuoso Bronislaw Huberman, its early prestige was indicated by its inaugural concert 81 years ago being conducted by Arturo Toscanini, then considered the world’s foremost conductor. Toscanini, who had fled Italian Fascism, stated in an interview, “I am doing this for humanity.” The performance included music by Richard Wagner who was banned two years later after Kristallnacht. Music by Felix Mendelsohn was also performed. Despite Mendelsohn’s conversion from Judaism, he remained staunchly pro-Jewish which resulted in his music being banned by the Nazis. Toscanini described the concert as one of the highlights of his life.

The great Leonard Bernstein, whose birth centenary we shall soon celebrate, had a life-long relationship with the IPO. In 1947, he conducted a concert in Jerusalem to the backdrop of exploding bombs even before Israel’s 1948 War of Independence had begun. On May 14, 1948 at the official Independence Ceremony, the Philharmonic played Hatikvah, which had just been adopted as Israel’s national anthem. In 1957, the 2800-seat Mann Auditorium Concert Hall in Tel Aviv opened. My parents visited Israel soon after and went to great lengths to obtain tickets to the Symphony which was always sold out. As its reputation grew, the IPO attracted some of the world’s greatest conductors and musicians. Following an extensive two year renovation in 2013, the hall was renamed The Charles Bronfman Auditorium.

In 1961 the Indian conductor Zubin Mehta, then 25 and unemployed, was given his first big break when appointed to the IPO. By the time he retires, he will be able to look back on his beautiful and long standing 60 year relationship. In 1967 during the Six-Day War, Mehta flew on a cargo plane full of ammunition back to Israel to conduct the Orchestra. Immediately after the War, Bernstein conducted Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony on the newly liberated Mount Scopus in Jerusalem.

1971 marked another milestone when the Orchestra was invited for the first time to Austria to perform at the famous Salzburg Festival. Soon after, they were invited to Berlin, which provoked considerable debate. At that concert, the audience burst into a standing ovation after Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. Immediately, Mehta called for the playing of Hatikvah as it was the 25th anniversary of the defeat of Germany in World War II. Nazi headquarters had stood a mere 500 feet away from the concert hall at Berlin’s Reichstag.

The Orchestra’s general manager, Avi Shoshani stated that they are true ambassadors of Israel: “What the Israel Philharmonic does in one night is more than an embassy does in three years.” After the fall of the ‘Iron Curtain’ the influx of many highly qualified musicians from the former Soviet Union boosted not only this Orchestra but smaller ones throughout Israel.

Our People, since the Biblical Levites, have been deeply rooted in music, often through the voice of the HazzanCantor. This has helped sustain us from the highest ecstasy experienced at the Crossing of the Sea at the Exodus, to the worst of desperation as witnessed by our emotional Kristallnacht Concert last November and this April’s Yom Hashoah Concert with the Silver Duo. How appropriate then that Israel continues to have one of the world’s great Philharmonic Orchestras.

President’s Message…………………………….…………...

The Future of Our History Several recent events related to our modern history have been on my mind lately. Of course, “modern” means different things to people of different ages. Perhaps a reasonable working definition for any of us might be the history starting a little bit before we were born.

One thing that caught my attention recently was the show on PBS, “GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II”. If you did not see it, I recommend that you do. You can still see it online at the PBS web site. This documentary tells the story of the over half million American Jews, including my father, who served in the war. At the time, there were a little over four million Jews in the United States, about 3% of the population. So half a million in the armed services may seem like a lot, with about 1 in 8 of all Jews in the country serving in uniform. But it is not dissimilar to the rest of the population. In fact, a little over 16 million Americans served in the war, and Jews made up about 3% of them, just as we made up 3% of the population.

The PBS documentary includes interviews with, and has stories about many men, and women, a few with famous names you may recognize. They tell their personal story against the backdrop of the war. The show reveals a lot about our country before and during the war, including how we Jews were treated by a society that was, to a significant degree, anti-Semitic. Among the many stories are those of men who had earlier come to the United States fleeing Europe, who then found themselves back fighting against what they had fled.

There were also stories of the experiences of American Jewish Chaplains, and videos of worship services in the field. Stories of the Shoah are also included in the program, with film footage of newly-liberated camps that is still hard to watch. There was one that particularly affected me. This was of an Army Chaplain Rabbi, who had a portable Aron Kodesh and a Torah, holding worship for servicemen and a group of just-liberated survivors, still wearing their prisoners’ rags, and still clearly in shock. When I was at B’nai Israel the following Shabbat, as we opened the Ark, took down the Torah, and chanted the Shema, my mind saw that scene, and I heard their voices chanting along with us. And I think that is why this show resonates so strongly with me. It connects us not only with our fellow Jews who served in the war, but also with the remnant of European Jewry. We become more aware of ourselves as a part of the continuing history of our people.

At this time of year, we mark remembrances of modern Jewish History. First, there was Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day). As usual, our community held meaningful events, and the children of survivors lit memorial candles in remembrance of the six million. At our synagogue, where there were six candles, many more than six people rose to take part in the lighting. The fact that there were so many in our small Jewish community serves as a reminder of the magnitude of the Shoah, and how we are all connected to this greatest of all crimes against humanity. There was a recent survey indicating that knowledge of the Shoah is declining in our country. For this reason I was especially gratified seeing the work of the junior high school students, made as part of their curriculum on the Holocaust, on display.

The other two remembrances at this time of year, one sad, one joyous, are Yom HaZikaron, when we remember and honor those who died in defense of the State of Israel, and Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel Independence Day. The modern State of Israel turns 70 this year. That is not a very long time in the scope of our whole history, which should remind us how precious Israel is, and how important its continued success is to the future history of our people.

The 2017-18 David S. Stone Religious School Year is Wrapping Up The 2017-18 school year at David S. Stone is wrapping up. We had a fabulous year with all of our incredible students and staff. I want to thank all of our dedicated teacher aides: Carolyn Glasser, Jeremy Davis, Quinn Murphy, Madison Smith, Sam Richards, Asher Kripke, Emmie Brody, Ian Mahoney, and Lila Goldman. They have chosen to stay active in our school as mentor s to all of our students. Their dedication to our school is wonderful. Special thanks to our fabulous teachers: Hazzan Ivor Lichterman, Rabbi Evan Rubin, Paulette Sherline, Hope Davis, Gina Black, Megan Van Dyke and Peter Silverman. Their wor k with our students is a labor of love.

Our continued collaboration with Etz Chayim has been fantastic for all involved. It is great to be working together for our children. The model seder held at Etz Chayim was a remarkable success. Thank you to Rabbi Evan Rubin and Hazzan Ivor Lichterman for leading the seder and to Nancy Jacobson for making all the arrangements.

We hope to see everyone at the Religious School End of Year Shabbat Program and Teacher Appreciation on Saturday May 5.

A tribute to Israeli fallen soldiers and victims of terror Our Israel partnership committee in the Western Galilee has created a website with the names, stories and pictures of fallen soldiers from that region. They have invited everyone to post a comment on any of the personal stories, and they will make sure to send that message to the family of that fallen soldier. You need to log in to post a comment. The comment can be by text or uploading an image (such as a child’s drawing or a video) saying something to the bereaved family.

Curtis Mae Jones I am often asked why I converted to Judaism. It was not a spur of the moment decision.

I was a devout Catholic, but became increasingly disillusioned with the faith. A still, small voice within me said, “There has to be something more.” As a result, I left the Catholic Church.

Over the course of many years, I worshiped in Protestant churches in each city we relocated to in order to find the right place. When I questioned what they believed, I was shunned and not accepted. This became extremely emotionally painful. After attending and being rebuffed at a Messianic group, I decided to remain at home. I did not know what I was seeking, but I just knew the places I visited did not have it.

In 2013, a year after my husband passed, I was introduced to a non-Jewish woman who read Torah. She had extensive knowledge of Jewish history and practices. Again, not knowing exactly what I was looking for, my hunt began with synagogues. I visited the Traditional and Reform on Shabbat, and Talmud classes during the week. I did not find peace during these visits. Next, I visited a Conservative synagogue called Beth Abraham in Dayton, Ohio. I was greeted with a warm welcome. In hindsight, it was like a divine appointment. I felt a sense of belonging and the peace I had been seeking.

Over the years, I believe that I was being led to Judaism and the Torah. I converted because I was seeking truth, which G-d gave to Moses in the Torah. Despite the emotionally painful journey I travelled over the course of 41 years, it was worth my persistence of being true to myself, and listening to that “still small voice”.

Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month Program Kudos to Eric Chase for sharing his journey with the group of Sunday School students and parents. Eric's story of dealing with mental illness held the audience captive. His honesty and courage is an inspiration to all.

He encouraged all to participate in NAMI Walk on May 12 at UTMC campus.

Eric Chase, is a local media personality and mental health advocate who shared his exEric Chase with Megan Miller perience with our community and Rhoda Miller students and parents. He shared information about the stigma of mental illness and coping mechanisms he has found helpful.

Renee Stack, school counselor for Sylvania Schools spoke to our younger students and parents about coping skills. The program was insightful and had a lot of great advice for all who attended. The program was our rescheduled Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month Program.
