POWER OF MUSIC

Conway for the first time in the USA and around the world.

The Nazis wanted to wipe out all trace of Stöhr and his music, and almost succeeded! We at Congregation B’nai Israel were privileged to be amongst the first to hear this glorious music and help promote its revival. I deliberately wanted the program to coincide with Pesach and with Yom Hashoah – Holocaust Commemoration Day which our community will mark on Sunday morning May 1st. Pesach represents our rebirth as a free nation, and Stöhr's musical genius and legacy deserve to be revived. If not for the Shoah, he would today have been one of the world’s best known (Jewish) composers. Today in Austria, his music is still hardly known or played.

Almost weekly non-Jewish visitors from area colleges attend our Shabbat services. At Kiddush when we have a chance for questions and answers, I invariably get asked the question as to why everything in the service is sung, and so beautifully?

One answer lies in the power of music to inspire, as experienced by our Biblical ancestors and recorded in the Torah in parshat B’shalach which inaugurated Jewish Music season. The first thing the Children of Israel did after they crossed the Sea safely and were delivered from the hands of the pursuing Egyptians, was sing and play music, as written in Exodus 15: Az yashir Moshe.. Then Moses and the Children of Israel will sing.

Let us keep singing and making music!

From Shabbat Shira – The Sabbath of Song, when we read the Torah portion B’shalach, from Exodus chapters 14 and 15, till Israeli Independence Day on the 5th of the Hebrew month of Iyar, we celebrate an approximately 3 month period in our Jewish calendar known as Jewish Music Season.

Due to the heavy amount of programming in this period in our congregation, I did not promote any specific programs this year as being for Jewish Music Season, except for Shabbat Shira itself which we celebrated on January 23rd.

However, on Sunday April 17th our congregation was privileged to be treated to a magnificent musical program, which although not specifically geared towards Jewish Music Season, was very much within the theme of this period. The program, entitled ‘The Life and Work of Richard Stöhr,’ included a powerpoint presentation on the composer and a cello and piano recital of some of Stöhr's brilliant classical musical compositions.

The audience of some 50 people including our older religious school students, were mesmerized by a thoroughly professional presentation by Stefan Koch from Ann Arbor, on the cello, and Robert Conway, associate professor of music at Wayne State University in Detroit, at the piano. The melodious music filled our sanctuary, echoing off the domed ceiling and filling the hearts of those fortunate enough to be there, in what was a truly memorable event.

The Jewish Richard Stöhr, one of pre-World War II Vienna, Austria’s most prominent musicians, was forced to convert to Christianity to survive in the heavily anti-semitic environment of Vienna. Expelled by the Nazis as Professor of Music from Vienna’s prestigious Music Academy in 1938, he escaped to the USA, where he held various music teaching positions, while his music languished forgotten for 70 years, ending up in the library of St. Michael’s College in Vermont.

The revival of this music began in 2010 when Stöhr's grandson Dan, a lawyer in Chicago, produced a CD of his grandfather’s music. Coincidentally at this time Stefan Koch, the presenter and soloist at our concert, and Dan met. Stephan was inspired to single-handedly revive this music by performing it with Professor

Life is definitely never dull with seven people living under the same roof. Dad works two jobs to make ends meet, older brother Stanley is eager to dispense sage advice, and Aunt Blanche tries to cope as a single parent. Brighton Beach Memoirs is a wonderful, semi-autobiographical comedy with heart, wit and hysterical insights into family life and growing up - just a little off-center.

David S. Stone Religious School We had a busy April at Religious School. The model seder was enjoyed by all of our students grades 7 and under. Cantor Lichterman led an interactive model seder after our special musical guest and speaker on April 17. The parents and toddlers enjoyed a morning of Passover activities and songs.

Our students had the opportunity to learn about our local community Jewish agencies with our friends from Shomer Emunim and Etz Chayim. They learned first- hand how they can help out in our community and what the function of each Jewish agency.

Our Confirmation class would love to see all of you on Sunday, May 15 at 10:30 a.m. for their Confirmation service. Rabbi Sokobin has been working with them, in addition to Hazzan Lichterman and Peter Silverman.

The students will continue the Hire a Mensch fundraiser until the end of May. Please contact Kim Brody or Stephanie Mahoney to set up a date and time. See below for more information.

Inaugurated to honor Congregation B’nai Israel’s 150th Anniversary, the Chai Campaign is a fund raising endeavor seeking contributions from all past confirmands around the world as well as current B’nai Israel members. This campaign, primarily an email effort named “Chai” for 18, is specifically designed so that anyone could feel that they could participate.

From our youngest 15 year old confirmand who babysits each week and looks forward to USY Kinnus weekends; to our baby boomers who grew up at the building on Kenwood and remember smoky bingo nights, parties in the Boy Scout Cabin and hiding backstage, and in the choir loft; to our senior members who have fond memories of the beautiful stained glass in the 12th Street building and the tunnel to the Annex…be a part of this campaign!

Funds received from this campaign will go towards the year's exciting events, historical programs, and lasting tributes to the synagogue. Our Anniversary Year will begin with our celebratory Shabbat Weekend Friday, September 16, 2016 featuring a very special service and dinner, Shabbat morning and evening services honoring members of the congregation, a reunion celebration Saturday evening September 17, 2016, and a historical bus tour Sunday, September 18, 2016, to the 12th Street and Bancroft former synagogue, and to area cemeteries. Among the other planned events will be a festive concert program December 3, 2016, as well as a video breakfast next spring, and a family afternoon program in June, 2017.
