Shavuot We will have a traditional Tikkun for Shavuot on the evening of Tuesday May 14. Services will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a dairy dinner at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Blair Grubb will speak from 8:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. and Dr. David Weinberg will speak from 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Following the speakers, we will chant extracts from the Book of Ruth in Hebrew and English. Everyone is invited to join us for an inspiring evening of learning, music, prayers & traditional foods.

PREPARING TO RECEIVE TORAH From the second night of Pesach till Shavuot we count seven full weeks in a period in our calendar we call Sefirat (counting) Ha’omer.

Seven is a particularly important number in Judaism. It hearkens back to God’s creation of the world and implies completion. The Hebrew word for seven – sheva – also denotes a covenant, an oath. Shabbat was given to us as a special day set aside for spiritual pursuits and cessation of labor.

If seven is important then all the more reason for 7 X 7. When our People were in the desert they underwent a process of purification and preparation to be worthy to receive the Torah and conquer the Promised Land. In order to become a true nation, there were three requirements. First we had to be freed from slavery. Then we needed the Torah so that we could become, as the Torah declares in Exodus 19:6, mamlechet kohanim v’goy kadosh – a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. And finally after 40 years we conquered the Promised Land and established Israel.

Shavuot, which celebrates the receiving of the Torah, is a somewhat neglected holiday when compared with the High Holy Days, Pesach, Sukkot, and even Hanukkah. Perhaps this is because it does not have concrete symbols and rituals like the shofar, seder, hanukkiah, etc. Also, it usually falls in the calendar during summer after the academic year ends and many people make their vacation plans. However, this year it falls on Wednesday, May 14.

You can help to rectify the injustice of Shavuot’s relative neglect by celebrating with us. Plan to join us on May 14th at 6.30 p.m. for a traditional tikkun; an evening of learning, prayer, music, festive food and celebration. Classes will be taught by our learned congregants Drs. Blair Grubb and David Weinberg. A traditional delicious dairy dinner will be served. The evening will end at 10 p.m. after chanting the beautiful Megillah of Ruth. Contact the office soon to make your reservations.

Holiday services continue the next morning at 9:30 a.m., evening at 5:45 p.m., and second day at 9.30 a.m. including a yizkor memorial service at 10:45 am. The concluding holiday service is at 5:45 p.m.

I also invite and urge everyone to attend our spectacular closing Family Shabbat Service which includes our Religious School Closing ceremony. Included will be teacher appreciation and the honoring of the Yad and Bimah Squad which is comprised of the many youth who have read Torah, haftorah, led major parts of the service, participated in programs, and have sung in our Junior Choir. There will be prizes for all participants with special awards to the winners who will be announced at the service.

Have a wonderful summer, travel safely if you are planning to go away. Next month I will report on the wonderful Confirmation Class trip to Israel currently being planned and finalized.

On April 11, B'nai Israel USY (BITUSY) and the Kadima 8th graders traveled to Ortonville, Michigan for Central Region USY's annual Regional Convention. Bringing USY chapters together from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, Regionals is a time to celebrate our accomplishments, bid farewell to the Senior class and welcome our 8th graders into USY. We sent a very spirited delegation consisting of Brian Glasser, Eden Preis, Kayla Bernstein, Miranda Hupp, Michelle Jacobson, Max Kaufman, Josh Sherman, Ben Yaffe, Sam Zack, Shayna Zack and Dahlia Zack. BITUSY spent the weekend participating in Israel Programs, Tikkun Olam fundraisers and even a mock Jewish wedding.

During the awards ceremony, BITUSY was recognized in several categories going home with four major awards including: Best Religious Education Program for BITUSY Shabbat Series, Best Membership and Kadima Program, Battle of the Sexes, Most Money raised per member for Tikkun Olam, and Most Improved Chapter.

As always, thank you to the CBI Staff, Parents, Board and Congregants for your continued support and enthusiasm that allows USY and Kadima at B'nai Israel to thrive.

Asher a5ended the David S. Stone Hebrew Academy and is a 7th grade honor student at Timberstone Junior High. Asher enjoys playing baseball, basketball, tennis and spending his summers at Camp Ramah in Canada. Asher also loves spending me with friends and his family.

Howard Rosenbaum has been chosen as the Raggedy’s Mensch of the Year. This award is for his many years of service to Congregation B’nai Israel. The Raggedy’s (RAC) was formed to remember the men of the Jewish Community in Toledo who were paper boys when they were young. Their clothes were ragged and the money they earned help support their families. Today the children and grandchildren of these men still meet annually to honor their legacy.

Travel, Tourism & Torah The Synagogue in Szeged

By Nancy Danziger In 1994 while visiting our son, Henry, in the Czech Republic, we arranged to meet some friends in Toledo’s sister city of Szeged, Hungary. It was suggested we visit the synagogue which is the second largest in Europe and perhaps the most beautiful. We were not disappointed.

Rabbi Immanuel Lowe, an amateur botanist, coordinated the construction of a building designed by noted Jewish Hungarian architect, Lipot Baumhorn (1860-1932). This man designed at least 22 synagogues throughout Hungary.

Completed in 1903 the Szeged synagogue features a baroque dome, Romanesque columns and Moorish-Arabic decorative motifs. The bima, carved of acacia from the banks of the Nile, is accented with golden candelabras modeled from descriptions of those that stood in the Great Temple in Jerusalem. The synagogue holds 1,340 worshippers.

In 1927 the Jewish community of Szeged numbered over 8,000. More than 5000 were lost in World War II. At the time we visited, there were only a couple hundred Jews left in this city of about 150,000. Their services are held in a small upper room of Szeged’s Jewish Social Center and are sparcely attended.

We were fortunate to meet the cantor, Marton Klein, who happened to be showing the London Boys’ Choir around. The acoustics were amazing as the talented choir boys sang and the cantor reciprocated. It was the magic moment of our trip.

However, it was bittersweet as we looked around at the opulence and realized that the synagogue functions as a museum and memorial rather than a religious sanctuary.

The Szeged Synagogue is the 4th largest in the world and today has approximately 500 members.
