President’s Message…………………………….…………...

ISRAEL, THE PROMISED LAND FOR BIRDWATCHERS. Ann and I recently spent a little over 2 weeks in Israel, traveling with Mike and Cathy Gordon. After a Tel Aviv weekend, we were off to Eilat where we participated in the Eilat Bird Festival. Here we met Israeli bird enthusiasts as well as folks from all over the world. Our leaders were all involved in conservation and wildlife protection in Israel. Learning about the many programs to protect the environment left no doubt that Israel is a “green” country, yet is still a model of development and industry. There is much the world can learn from Israel about taking care of the Earth. The festival was exhausting, leaving the hotel at 6 a.m. most days and returning at dusk, or later. We saw well over 100 species that were new to us. But in addition to the variety of species, the spectacle was amazing. At Sde Boker [where David and Paula Ben-Gurion are buried], standing in the beautiful park, we looked up to see many hundreds of cranes flying North, soon followed by over 2000 white storks, along with other soaring species. Storks, eagles, hawks, vultures and some other large birds don’t flap their wings very much, but instead soar, riding the hot air currents higher and higher, then gliding as far as they can. So when we looked up, the sky was full of these birds, circling in all directions, higher and higher before heading off North. In essence, a hot air elevator. The next week, we saw some of these same birds, and many others, in the Golan Heights and in the Hula Valley. Another day, in the Eilat mountains, we saw easily over 10,000 hawks, buzzards, eagles and others riding the currents higher, then heading off; a river of birds. Of all the places in the world to experience migration, Israel may be the most amazing.

Here in Northwest Ohio, we also experience a fantastic migration, with birds traveling from Central and South America, flying past us to the North. We even have our own bird festival, which many of the experts and birdwatchers we met in Israel have attended. One of the festival organizers and a woman from Madagascar were even wearing their tee-shirts from our Northwest Ohio bird festival.

The map shows the migration routes in the Eastern hemisphere. The main route from Africa is along the rift valley, leading to Israel. Imagine you have just crossed the Sahara, thousands of miles with no food or water. Your weight has dropped by almost half. You are desperate to land and feed.

Below you is sand, and maybe the Red Sea, and then finally greenery as you find Eilat, and a green path through Israel.

Once past the Middle East, birds head to their summer homes throughout Europe and much of Asia. The importance of Israel is obvious. The need for careful stewardship of nature is critical for the survival of millions of birds. It was wonderful to see what the people of Israel have done to make the land blossom and to preserve habitat, and the support received from Jewish communities around the world to help make it possible.

It is certainly exciting and uplifting to experience the migration. But there is a more serious side to this festival, and also the bird-watching contest that took place a few days later, called the “Champions of the Flyway”. This contest is a 24 hour marathon to identify the most species. Both the festival and the contest raise money to support conservation and education in countries around the Mediterranean. In many countries along the migration route, it is a tradition to shoot the migrating birds. This year, teams from all around the world, including the U.S., raised over $60,000 which will be used, in partnership with a conservation group in Turkey, to support several projects, including educational workshops. There will be special emphasis to work with children of Syrian Refugees. The team identifying the most species in 24 hours was the team from Finland, who also won last year. There is also an award for the team raising the most money to support this year’s project, and an award for the team that does the most to help other teams. Both of these were won by the team from South Africa.

This is Tikkun Olam, working to perfect the world, at many levels.

We are happy to announce that starting next year families of students enrolled in the David S. Stone Religious School will not have to pay tuition. An anonymous donor has established a fund in the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation to make this possible. The fund is specifically designed to replace the tuition costs that would otherwise be charged to families for both Sunday School and Hebrew School.

We look forward to another wonderful year at the David S. Stone School.

Hot off the presses!

In honor of Congregation B'nai Israel's 150th Anniversary, a group of members volunteered to conduct oral history interviews of current members. Most of the subjects had been lifelong members of the Conservative Synagogue in Toledo, Ohio. The result is this volume consisting of interviews conducted in 2015 and 2016. These stories give a unique look at Jewish life in a mid-western city in Northwest Ohio from the perspective of forty three individuals aged 17 - 97.

I hope you were able to join us at the annual Community Yom HaShoah event on Sunday, April 30. Our students were involved in the project Stones to Remember the Children. They painted stones in memory of the children who perished in the Holocaust and placed them at the Holocaust memorial in front of our campus. This is a collaborative project with all Jewish students in our community. Adam Davis did an outstanding job speaking from his heart and representing our students.

May 7, 2017 is the last day of religious school for all students until fall. We were thrilled to welcome our friends from Congregation Etz Chayim to join David S. Stone Religious School this year.
