Oh Today We’ll Merry Merry Be Purim, like Simchat Torah, is one of those rare Jewish holidays that emphasizes pure joy above all else, despite the seriousness of its deeper meaning. That is not to imply that other Jewish holidays lack a sense of joy – many include a strong element of joy as part of the holiday’s observance.

For example Sukkot is, by definition, the holiday of joy, one of its names being zeman simchateinu. Our Shabbat observance is supposed to include oneg shabbat – the joy of shabbat. But Purim and Simchat Torah, above all others, put joy at the top of our celebratory priorities.

One way of enhancing our Purim celebration, which is true of all Jewish occasions, is through its music. There are many varied and beautiful Purim songs we sing, and the Megilah Of Esther is chanted to a unique trop/cantillation melody not used any other time of year. It occasionally borrows the musical motif of the trop of the Book Of Lamentations, known as Eichah, as well as other unique musical motifs which serve to highlight “hidden” acts of God, since God’s name is not actually spelled out in the megilah.

One song we all know and use, because it is suitable for children and easy to learn, whose adaptation for Purim/Jewish usage is obscure, is contained in the title of this article – Oh Today We’ll Merry Merry Be. Some attribute this adaptation to Ben Aronin, a Chicago Jewish educator, who is known for adapting many parodies and secular songs for popular Jewish usage. But researchers have been unable to verify this, and Aronin’s family has refuted this attribution.

The song is an adaptation of the 19th century English drinking

song Landlord Fill The Flowing Bowl.

Its words include – Landlord fill the flowing bowl, until it doth run over.

For tonight we’ll merry, merry be, tomorrow we’ll be sober.

Here’s to the lad who drinks dark ale and goes to bed quite mellow He lives as he ought to live, he’ll die a happy fellow.

Earliest published references to this song for Purim usage, date back to around 1940 as part of a Purim play. Its authorship is now generally listed as “traditional” or “anonymous.”

Whatever the case, when you join us for our rousing, typical, and uniquely joyous B’nai Israel Purim event on Wednesday, March 23rd at 5:45 PM, you can be sure that this, along with many other great great songs, will enhance our celebration on this most unique of Jewish holidays.

The evening’s highlight, as always, will be yet another 3Z Productions spiel (3 Zuckers - Sophie, Deena and Meira) – details are contained on the cover of this bulletin. So don’t miss ‘Midwest Side Story Spiel” or – How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Election. The evening begins with a free delicious dinner generously sponsored by Phyllis Diamond, with desserts and drinks donated by the Zucker family, followed by service, abbreviated megilah, and spiel.

Message from the President………………………………….

Despite the cold weather of February, activities abounded at B’nai Israel. Donations of hundreds of bottles of water were made by our congregants to help the citizens of Flint Michigan cope with their contaminated water crisis. Also, our board of trustees attended a workshop lead by Mindy Gordon of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. We are appreciative of the organizational resources provided to us by USCJ. I enjoyed hearing first hand, viewpoints shared with me by the parents of students in our David S. Stone Religious School at a February meeting at our shule. Their input will help our board and staff position our religious school and synagogue for the dynamic demographic shifts in our community.

It is difficult to get through our day without being painfully aware that politics within our governments are becoming increasingly loud, caustic and polarizing. If the stakes were not so important, many of us would choose not to watch the national or regional news or read the front page of our newspapers. However political coverage can shape our viewpoints on a range of topics from presidential candidates, the environment, immigration or the U.S. relationship with Israel.

We know that this is not a new story as many of us have viewed more than a few election cycles.

Beginning this March 23rd, our observance of Purim marks a holiday when politics played a pivotal role in supporting the foundations of the Jewish people around the 4 th century BCE. Our ancestors were not thinking about any of the issues that we face today but more fundamentally; their survival.

We know well the story of how King Ahasuerus’s new wife Esther (Queen Vashti’s replacement) saved her husband from an assassination attempt and earned his trust. To make a long but interesting tale much shorter, Queen Esther requested that her new husband thwart Hamen’s goal of destroying the Jews of Shushan. Hamen was hanged, Mordechai her cousin was appointed prime minister in Hamen’s place and the Jews of Shushan were saved.

If my telling of the story of Purim was too brief but your interest was piqued, we invite you to attend a retelling of the Purim story titled “Mid West Side Story” on Wednesday, March 23 at CBI. This Purim Spiel has drama, fabulous music and a happy ending for Jews. Gather your friends and make your reservation to attend a delicious pre-spiel dinner which has been underwritten by a very generous donor.

Our religious school students will once again participate in a Purim Carnival, this year hosted by Shomer Emunim. Please consider purchasing carnival tickets directly from the CBI office for which our USY chapter will derive full benefit from your entire purchase.

Bat Mitzvah………………………………………………………

Haley Smith will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday March 12, 2016, at Congregation B’nai Israel. Haley is the daughter of Steven & Michelle Smith and Andrea Mitchell, sister to Madison and Samuel, and granddaughter to London and Debra Mitchell, Tracy and Linda Clark, the late Howard and Betty Smith, and to Jim and Cindy Scherley.

Haley attends Timberstone Junior High in Sylvania. She is in the seventh grade and is an honor student. Haley enjoys being a part of the Timberstone seventh grade band where she plays the baritone horn. She will participate in Solo and Ensemble this spring. She enjoys listening to all types of music and making everyone laugh. For her Mitzvah project, Haley is collecting needed items for the Toledo Area Humane Society and volunteering her time there. Haley is looking forward to celebrating her Bat Mitzvah with family and friends.

David S. Stone Religious School Our students were very fortunate to be a part of the Jewish Disability Awareness Program facilitated by Rabbi Michael Ungar. This was a joint program with all of our Jewish community students. Rabbi Ungar led an interactive workshop for our upper grades and Mushka Matusof and Chloe Rothschild led sensory activities for our younger grades. This was an enlightening experience for all involved.

Peter Silverman’s class received letters from their pen pals in our Partnership region in the Western Galilee. They are building on their Skype sessions and getting to know our friends in Israel. They hope to meet them face to face when they visit Israel this summer for their confirmation trip. The students are also keeping up with the current events going on in Israel.

We are looking forward to Purim on Wednesday, March 23. All of our Jewish community students will be working together to run and set up the Purim carnival.

The carnival will be at Shomer Emunim on March 20 th from 10:00-11:30am. We are also excited for the Purim Spiel/Megillah reading on March 23, preceded by a delicious dinner. Our younger students will be making hamentashen with our friends from Shomer Emunim and assembling shaloch manot boxes for the elderly in nursing homes.

The continued support from our congregants for our Hire a Mensch Program is greatly appreciated . This is a wonderful way for our students to meet our congregants and prepare for their Confirmation trip to Israel. Please see below for details.

The McInnis-Sheffer Family Jolie Sheffer, Dan McInnis, and their one-year-old son Benjamin are very happy to be living in the Toledo area. Jolie grew up near South Bend, Indiana, while Dan was raised in upstate New York. University teaching brought them both to Ohio. Currently, Jolie teaches English and American Culture Studies at Bowling Green State University. Dan teaches photography at Wittenberg University; his photography will soon be on display at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, as a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. They love movies, fine dining, and travel. Benjamin loves apples, books, and trains.

Trisha Butera I have recently had the honor to go through the conversion process at B'nai Israel.

Corey Russell and I have been dating for over three years and I am lucky enough to have the love and support from his parents, Merv and Marlene Russell as well and his Uncle and Aunt, Jerry and Arlene Russell. I currently live in Sylvania with my three beautiful boys. Brandon is a Freshman at Northview High School and my twins, Jon and Ryan, are in the second grade at Highland. I work for Southern Care Hospice. I would like to thank Corey and his family as well as everyone who has been so kind and helpful throughout my conversion. I am truly honored and humbled by everyone's kindness. Also, I would like to thank my classmates for being supportive and helping me learn along the way, along with Hazzan Lichterman for his kindness and knowledge.

We well exceeded our goal and could not have done it without the support of our awesome parents involvement and commitment to ensuring that our Chapter stays strong!

I was so pleased so many of our members were able to be there that morning. Multiple people stopped me to say how nice it was to see so many of the kids!

Miranda wanted me to let those who volunteered know that she was sorry she could not be there this morning. It ended up this weekend was Jeremy's homecoming in Southfield so she was out of town with many of the MCUSY kids.
