Notes from the Cantor ………………………………………. “

NUMBERING OUR DAYS

The psalmist, likely King David, says in Psalm 90: 12, “Teach us how to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” By the time you read this article we will be completing a counting cycle in our Jewish calendar known as Sefirat Ha’omer – the Counting of the Omer. This is a 49-day/seven week period linking the great holidays of Pesach and Shavuot. It is based on the Torah, Leviticus 23: 15 which mentions the mitzvah of an offering of new grain (omer) which was to be brought to the Temple for 49 consecutive days beginning with the second day of Passover.

There are many reasons and interpretations for counting Sefirat Ha’omer. One that I prefer is the importance of connecting our physical liberation as represented by Pesach with our spiritual liberation as represented by the receiving of the Torah on Shavuot.

There are, however, four newer observances that occur in our Jewish calendar during these 49 days, marking this period as a particularly intense time. Connecting all 6 observances, which are often separated by just a mere few days, helps link liberation and revelation. These four observances move swiftly from one extreme of our human emotions to the other. Thereby we might realize that life, potentially, can be so fragile and, as the Psalmist beseeches us, we might learn “to number our days.”

These newer observances are– Yom Hashoah – Holocaust Commemoration Day on the 27th of Nisan Yom Ha’atzma’ut – on the 5th of Iyar - Israel Independence Day. This year is the 69th Anniversary.

Lag Ba’omer – the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer - a joyous holiday marking, amongst other things, the end of a plague that afflicted thousands of Rabbi Akiva’s students Yom Yerushalayim - on the 28th of Iyar - marking the reunification of Jerusalem into one united city during the Six Day War of 1967.

Concurrently, here at CBI we celebrated many milestones and events during this same period. It is always a hectic, feverishly busy but also joyous time in our synagogue life, when the academic year ends and the warm, long days of summer begin.

In Judaism we are taught to link our personal lives with our national Jewish experience. Perhaps thereby we can come to the realization, that making each and every day of our lives count, is likely the most profound message we can derive from the ancient mitzvah of counting the Omer. Thereby, linking the 49 days between Pesach and Shavuot will become a most meaningful spiritual exercise, as opposed to only the High Holidays which won’t occur for another four months.

Some of these milestones and events at CBI include – Confirmation on May 7th with 7 outstanding confirmands David S. Stone Religious School end of academic year Shabbat ser vice on May 13th honor ing our students, faculty and parents on completion of another successful year.

Hazzan’s Yad and Bimah Squad award for outstanding student of the year which went to Adam Davis who led most of the special Shabbat service Mothers’ Day Shabbat on May 13th Shavuot on May 31st, June 1 - 2 beginning with the Tikkun led by Rabbi Jason Miller 150th Volunteer Recognition Shabbat on J une 3rd honoring over 100 devoted volunteers who contributed to making our 150th Anniversary such an amazing year of celebration Annual Meeting and 150th Congregational Picnic/Barbecue on J une 11th.

I hope and trust that many of you have availed yourselves of these wonderful opportunities to celebrate milestones in our congregants’ lives and observe worthwhile events. For events still upcoming, I hope to see you all there!

If you go out of town during the summer, take the opportunity to visit a shul wherever you are, and I look forward to hearing all about it. For those students who are staying in town for part or all of the summer, I hope to see you at services. Meantime, at the beginning of June I have already called a staff meeting to plan for the rest of 2017 and 2018, which holds the promise of being as fulfilling and hectic as our 150 th Year has been.

President’s Message…………………………….…………...

IF YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU, WHAT WILL YOU LEAVE BEHIND? Have you ever asked yourself, “How will I be remembered?” It is part of our nature to contemplate this. We are asking about the worth of our lives as seen by others. We do a lot of remembering as part of our Jewish practice, saying Kaddish for our departed loved ones, Yizkor, visiting the graves and leaving a stone. When you read an obituary, or hear the remembrances at a funeral, it is about how the person lived his or her life, and especially how the deceased affected the lives of others: their family, their friends and coworkers, their community, the world. I don’t think I have ever heard a eulogy or read an obituary in which the wealth of the deceased, even for the very wealthy, was an important measure of the true value of the person. Yet, so much of what we do and how we act is centered on material wealth. There is an old joke, told to me by an old friend, about the old man who wanted to take all his wealth with him. As death approached, he told his wife that his dying wish was that she put all their money in the grave with him. When asked if she had done this, the answer was, “well, yes and no. I wrote him a check. If he can cash it, it’s all his.” Though the man apparently had material wealth, we must wonder about his moral wealth – that for which he will be remembered.

One measure of a person’s moral wealth might be how they respond to suddenly acquiring a lot of money, or of accumulating more than they or their family would ever need. Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are perhaps the most famous, fabulously wealthy people who have given or pledged to give away most of their fortunes to charity. There are many more, funding universities, hospitals, medical research, religious institutions, and organizations to provide help for people with any number of illnesses, those living in poverty, victims of traumatic events, and more. A quick internet search will lead you to people that have given millions, and even billions of dollars.

Winners of lotteries have a slightly different “problem” of what to do with all that money that they probably did not expect to have, and so had no real chance to plan. Their behavior provides examples of both the good and bad in us.

There are some who squander it all, and even end up in debt. Some give it to family and friends. Looking for news reports about this also led to many stories of lottery winners who just gave it away to worthy causes, or set up charitable trusts.

Every so often there is a news story about someone of apparently modest means leaving a large amount for scholarships or other charitable causes. Some are “secret millionaires”, like the Vermont janitor everyone thought was poor, and who had led a very frugal life, but who had amassed $8 million over the decades with his investments.

He left most of it to a hospital and a library. Much more common are those ordinary people, of ordinary means, who leave what is to them a substantial fraction of their estate. These folks are probably like many of us. Unlike the very rich, we may be unsure if we have enough to last us through old age, or have enough to leave something to help our children and grandchildren. As a result, we give some during our lives, then the big donation comes when we are not around to see the good that we have done, or to give others a chance to thank us. In a way, that is a shame. If you want recognition, it would be nice to be around to receive the thanks. Even if you don’t care to be recognized, or even if you wish your donation to be anonymous, it is still nice to be able to see how your generosity is used and appreciated. The Vermont man could have seen his name, or that of someone he wished to honor, on a new hospital wing, or a new library branch, or a new endowed Chair of Medicine, or an endowed Director of Libraries. For those who wish to be recognized, or who wish to honor the memories of parents, or the memory of a still-loved spouse or sibling, this is a great way to extend their memory. Next time you are in our building, take a look around at the signs that honor some of the donors who made our congregational home possible, and take a moment to appreciate what they have done for us all.

Safety and Security Update B’nai Israel has been awarded a grant from the Ohio Emergency Management Agency to help us further improve security. This comes from a State of Ohio fund that had been set aside specifically for non-profits and is to be used for equipment that addresses vulnerabilities identified in the grant application process. The improvements include upgrades to our electronic security system, additional video monitoring and inside door locking mechanisms. We hope to have these projects completed by the end of 2017.

Dr. Blair P. Grubb Receives UT’s Outstanding Faculty Research and Scholarship Award Dr. Blair P. Grubb, a Distinguished University Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Toledo Medical Center has received the University of Toledo’s “Outstanding Faculty Research and Scholarship Award” for 2017. The award is one of the highest honors that the University can bestow upon its faculty members and recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the advancement of human knowledge and welfare. In presenting the award the selection committee cited Dr. Grubb’s ground breaking research into the mechanisms and management of syncope (fainting) as well as his landmark investigations into the physiology and pathophysiology of the human autonomic nervous system. The committee also recognized the fact that Dr. Grubb has published over 240 peer-reviewed scientific papers in high-impact journals, his best-selling textbook “Syncope: Mechanisms and Management”, as well as the numerous chapters that he has written for internationally recognized medical textbooks. Also noted were the more than 200 lectures he has presented at medical institutions across the United States and across the world. Special mention was made that the Syncope and Autonomic Disorders Clinic at the University of Toledo Medical Center (which he directs) sees patients from across the country and from many other countries as well. The award was presented at a special ceremony on April 17, 2017.

TODAH RABAH TO OUR DONORS! Congregation B’nai Israel has provided four Confirmation trips to Israel practically free of charge to participants. It has, to date, impacted over 60 of our students. The students have an extraordinary experience and it has the potential to change their lives forever as young, emerging proud Jews. It is a true accomplishment for our congregation to be able to provide these trips, and something for all of us to be so deeply proud of.

These trips have been made possible through the generous support of the

Steinberg Family SKIP Fund (Send Kids to Israel Program) and Sherwin and Naomi Kripke Israel Program Fund

We are deeply indebted and grateful to these families for their forethought in establishing funds to provide such a valuable Judaic benefit to B’nai Israel students. Additional funding is provided by the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation’s Israel Experience Fund. This dream come true trip has without doubt enhanced our students’ positive view of Israel, and their understanding of Judaism, as well as their knowledge of the centrality of Israel and Jerusalem in our lives.

David S. Stone Religious School “AND FROM MY STUDENTS MORE THAN ALL OF THEM” The title of my article is a quote taken from the Talmudic tractate Taanis (pg. 7a) where Rabbi Chanina said, “I have learned much from my teachers, and from my colleagues more than from my teachers, and from my students more than all of them.” Indeed we are instructed to seek knowledge from everyone, and teaching allows for the ultimate in that pursuit.

I want to thank all of those involved in the David Stone Religious School for a wonderful year of teaching and learning. The administration led by Kim Brody has provided for all of my needs in the classroom and beyond. Hazzan Lichterman is a good friend and a pleasure to work with as a partner. The parents are engaged and supportive of all of our efforts. Most importantly, our students are fantastic. They came on Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons eager to learn. The conversation is always stimulating, and I have definitely learned from them.

The picture with this article is of a hand-made gift from one of my students. It contains a quote from Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers (Chapter 1, Mishnah 6). RELIGIOUS SCHOOL TO BE FREE TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES NEXT YEAR! We are happy to announce that, beginning next year, families of students enrolled in the David S. Stone Religious School will not have to pay tuition. An anonymous donor has established a fund in the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation to make this possible. The fund is specifically designed to replace the tuition costs that would otherwise be charged to families for both Sunday School and Hebrew School.

We look forward to another wonderful year at the David S. Stone School.

Chloe Brim, granddaughter of Marlene and Merv Russell and Donna Richman, is graduating from the University of Missouri with a B.S. in Secondary Education, majoring in Social Studies. She is seeking a teaching position in Chicago, IL.

Sam Brochin, son of Drs. Christine and Ken Brochin, graduated from Miami University with a B.A. in psychology with a business minor. He has a job in HR at Bissell Corporation in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Miranda Hupp, daughter of Megan Miller and Corey Hupp, is graduating from Ottawa Hills High School. She will be attending Kent State University studying in the School of Fashion Design and Merchandising.

Max Kaufman, son of Susan and Steve Kaufman, graduated from Muhlenberg College. He received a B.A. with a double major in finance and international business. Max has accepted a position as a Strategy Analyst with Aon Inpoint, a global strategy consulting firm focused exclusively on the insurance industry. Max will be working out of AON’s corporate headquarters in Chicago, IL.

Nathan Podolsky, son of Michael and Leslie Podolsky, is graduating from Sylvania Southview High School. He will be attending the University of Michigan where he will study Computer Science at their School of Engineering.

Matthew Rothschild, son of Stephen and Cheryl Rothschild, is graduating from Sylvania Southview High School.

He will be attending Northwestern University where he will be majoring in Applied Mathematics in Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering.

Zachary Rothschild, son of Stephen and Cheryl Rothschild, is graduating from Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering. While at Northwestern, Zachary double majored in Industrial Engineering and Economics. After graduation, Zachary will be moving to South Carolina where he will be employed with Owens Corning in their Finance and Accounting Leadership Program.

Jordan Russell, grandson of Marlene and Merv Russell and Donna Richman, is graduating from Southern Illinois University with a B. A. in Cinema/Photography and a B.S. in Marketing. He will be relocating to California in pursuit of a job in cinema.

Catie Sack, daughter of Kathy and Jim Sack, graduated from The Ohio State University. She will be moving to Connecticut.

Ian Segall, son of Dr. Rina Gudelman-Segall and Nate Segall, graduated Magna Cum Laude from The Ohio State University. He will be attending Dental School at the University of Michigan starting this summer.

Jamie Sherman, daughter of Jeff and Alison Sherman, is graduating from Sylvania Southview High School.

She will be attending Mercy College to pursue a career in the medical field.

Dahlia Zack, daughter of Dena and David Zack, is graduating from Sylvania Northview High School. She will be going to the University of Cincinnati this fall, where she is studying Early Childhood Education.

Kitchen Corner

I am often asked where I purchase th food for our many Shabbat and holiday meals. Though I might gather items from a few different stores for many of the meals, one store is always on my list: Sautter’s Food Center on Main street in downtown Sylvania.

If I can’t find what I need for one of the congregation’s celebrations on their shelves, a quick visit with or phone call to Jim Sautter, the owner, and like magic it appears! Except, I know that the only magic involved is Jim going out of his way to make sure the CBI has what it needs. Whether it was a request for kosher wines or the need for kosher meat, Jim always comes through for us. The next time you are in Sautters I hope you will take a moment to reach out to Jim and let him know that the Jewish Community, and especially Congregation B’nai Israel, is grateful for his support.

Sautters is now carrying a small selection of kosher wines to better serve our community.

Many thanks to Leslie and Michael Podolsky, Hope and Greg Davis, and Ann and Howard Rosenberg for hosting Shabbat Luck. They opened their homes and prepared foods for a wonderful dinner enjoyed by over forty congregants. Even though it was a rainy night, a good time was had by all! It is events like this that help people really get to know each other on an individual basis. We hope next time YOU will join in this meaningful Shabbat experience.
