Notes from the Cantor How Much is Enough?

I am writing this article the day after I attended a program co-sponsored by Toledo Jewish Federation’s Jewish Living Center. Frankly, I was reluctant to attend as it was a Tuesday which, supposedly is my day off. But often there are commitments that fall on a Tuesday for which I have no choice, or opt to attend.

Yesterday’s program was one of the latter, and I’m sure glad I did!

The movie ‘Lives Well Lived’ by Sky Bergman was shown. It includes interviews with 40 people aged 75 to 100 whose thoughtful perspectives contain powerful life’s lessons. I was mesmerized. Some of the interviewees reminded me of my own dear mother. None of the 40 interviewees were wealthy, and many of quite meager means, yet one of the overall, underlying messages was a sense of satisfaction with their lives. As Pirkey Avot/Ethics of our Fathers states: “Who is wealthy? Whoever is happy with their portion”, (4:1).

As I write, we are reading in the Torah cycle the portion called Emor, Leviticus chapters 21–24. Concurrently in our Jewish calendar, we are in the midst of the period known as ‘Sefirat Ha’omer' – The Counting of the Omer, the mitzvot of which are instructed in this week’s same Torah portion, Emor. This period involves the bringing of three sets of offerings, the deeper significance of which I believe is related to the valuable life’s lessons garnered from the above-mentioned movie.

1) Literally, ‘Sefirat Ha’omer' refers to the bringing of the new season’s first grain harvest (omer) to the Kohen (priest) on the second day of Pesach when we get to the Promised Land. The Torah states: “You shall eat no bread or parched grain or fresh ears until that day when you have brought the offering to God”, (Leviticus 23:14).

We then count seven weeks ending the day before Shavuot.

2) On completion of the seven weeks, we are again instructed to bring a different offering, this time ‘lechem tenufah shtayim’ - two loaves of bread (Leviticus 23:9-21). The Mishna in Menachot

10:5 explains the difference between the omer and the two loaves offerings as follows: The

omer permits the new season’s grain to be enjoyed by everyone throughout the land, whereas

the two loaves are for the benefit of Temple usage.

3) Finally, the Torah instructs us in the mitzvot of ‘leket’ and ‘peah’ by which the gleanings and corners of our fields are to be left for the benefit of the poor.

The seven week Sefirah period from Pesach to Shavuot should be seen as a time of transition from nothing to everything. Yes, on Pesach we were freed, and slaves, technically, have ‘nothing’, but without the Torah and the land and country in which to fulfill the Torah, it was an empty freedom.

Cleaning out the chamets/leaven before Pesach may similarly represent having nothing, then starting over with a clean slate. The matzah we eat for eight days is called 'lechem oni'/bread of poverty, but before we get to enjoy the first fruits of the new season on our new land, first we must bring the Omer offering for God to the priest. Then on Shavuot when we received the Torah, we bring two loaves in contrast to the bread of poverty of Pesach. Finally, we share our blessings with the poor and deprived, leaving the 'leket' and 'peah' for them.

I believe the message of the three offerings, of Pesach, Sefirah, and Shavuot are clear as the message of the forty interviewees in the movie Lives Well Lived. To ’live life well’ means to acknowledge our blessings, to thank the Source thereof, and to share our bounty with those less fortunate.

President's Message Another Busy Year at CBI Our storied congregation is now 152 years old and is one of which we can all be proud. But what makes CBI the wonderful place that it is? It is due to all of you and to those that give of themselves and of their time that really makes CBI a great place to come to.

This past year was non-stop with a variety of programs, Adult Education series, and Religious School events held at CBI. None of these events happen without many hours of work prior to the event. This past October, we began with a monumentally important workshop on how to create an ethical will to hand down to our loved ones. October also saw the Women’s Retreat at Lourdes University that was enjoyed by all who attended. The women who participated made a beautiful piece of artwork that now proudly hangs in our Social Hall. In April, we had another women’s event that focused on the life and teachings of Biblical Miriam.

The Adult Education series lasted all year with one lecture after the next culminating with our Scholar in Residence Weekend, featuring Dr. Yoni Miller. CBI prides itself on the number of educational opportunities that we provide, not only to our members, but also to the community at large. Jeff Bauer chairs the Adult Education Committee and is always open for new names to put on our list of lecturers. Our new programming committee is chaired by Helen Michaels. She is also open for suggestions for new and innovative programming.

Our Religious School, under the leadership of Kim Brody and Cantor Lichterman, just completed another successful year. This past year, we opened discussions with Temple Shomer Emunim to combine our religious schools. This year, that did not work out. Ongoing efforts to facilitate combining the schools are in the works. Because we have so few Jewish youth in the Toledo area, it would undoubtedly benefit all the children if we were to combine our respective schools.

I am happy to report that CBI is on solid financial ground. We have again been able to balance the budget and we are practicing sound fiscal responsibility. This year, we kicked off a fund drive to finance our newly created Endowment Fund. We are off to a good start under the leadership of our treasurer, Bobby Kripke, chair of the fund drive. We want to insure that no matter what happens to our membership, CBI will always be able to exist and have the funds to do so. Your investment in our future is crucial.

This past year, we spent countless hours updating and improving the safety and security of our congregation. According to the police and outside experts, CBI is ahead of the curve for the security measures that we already have in place. We recently submitted a grant that, if secured, will enhance what we have already done on the premises. Our goal is to make CBI as safe as possible with the resources that we have. We established a Safety and Security Fund that so many of our congregants have contributed to already. If you have not contributed to this most important fund, please consider doing so.

You may have heard that we have hired a new visiting rabbi for the High Holidays, as well as for occasional Shabbat services when Cantor Lichterman is not available. Her name is Rabbi Joan Friedman.

She comes to us from the Akron area. Rabbi Friedman is not only well versed as a Torah reader, but she is also blessed with a beautiful voice that can enhance our cantorial needs. She will play a significant role for the upcoming High Holidays in all aspects of the service. She is very warm and personable and is looking forward to connecting with our congregants. Jeremy Davis, son of Greg & Hope Davis, graduated from Southview High School. He will be attending The Ohio State University and intends to double major in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and History, with a minor in Entrepreneurship. His ultimate goal is to go to law school.

Andrew Colin Davis will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. at Congregation B’nai Israel.

Andy is the son of Hope and Greg Davis, brother of Jeremy and Adam Davis, and the grandson of Harriet and Martin Davis of Sylvania, and David z”l and Gloria Fettman of Canton, Ohio.

Andy will be an eighth grader at Timberstone Junior High School where he is a Timberstone pack leader, a volunteer who welcomes and guides sixth graders. His favorite subjects in school are math and science. He enjoys playing basketball and baseball. Andy’s mitzvah project is centered around reading to preschoolers weekly and he plans to donate to a literacy program.

Many thanks to their dedicated teachers; Peter Silverman, Rabbi Rubin and Cantor Lichterman, who helped them reach this significant occasion. I would also like to thank Quinn Murphy for his beautiful musical accompaniment during the ceremony. I am looking forward to all of the wonderful accomplishments that I know these students will achieve in their promising futures.

The Patient Advocate Program offers an opportunity to engage in a meaningful and rewarding experience. This program connects trained volunteers with Jewish seniors to ensure they get the most out of their medical appointments.

VOLUNTEERS CAN BE JEWISH AND NON-JEWISH. Volunteers assist individuals in preparing for medical appointments, accompany them to appointments, and act as an advocate by facilitating communication between doctor and patient. This program offers volunteers flexibility and a chance to enhance the lives of seniors and our community.

(cont. from page 3) Speaking of rabbis, we are all blessed to have Rabbi Alan Sokobin as part of the CBI family. His erudition and his enlightening drashes are much appreciated by the congregants. He is always there to help out when the cantor is not available. There are so many others that also help out in a pinch as well as on a regular basis. We are blessed to have Howard Rosenbaum, David Weinberg, David Friedes, Jack Katz, Miriam Beckerman and Jerry Russell who all help with Shabbat and daily services. It would be impossible to mention everyone else who does their part, but I have a feeling that most readers of this column know who they are.

It is hard for me to believe that one year has gone by since I assumed the presidency. I came in with a little apprehension and concern of all that was expected of me. Fortunately, I was and still am surrounded by excellent people that made my job as your President as pleasant as possible. I, as well as the members of our Board of Trustees, will always be open for congregants to approach us with questions, ideas, or concerns. Memorial Plaques A memorial plaque is a wonderful way to remember your loved ones. Plaques are cast in bronze and placed in our sanctuary. If you would like to purchase a plaque please contact the office for an order form. Cost is $500.

Plaques ordered by July 31, 2019 will be dedicated at the Yom Kippur Yizkor Service on October 9, 2019.

Many people pre-order memorial plaques for themselves to reserve a spot next to a spouse or other family members. Pre-payment for these plaques can be arranged through the CBI office 419.517.8400.

(continued from page 11) We are looking forward to the fifth Confirmation trip to Israel planned for June 2-10, 2020. This is the trip of a lifetime for our Religious School students. The trip will include students who are entering the 9th grade this fall through our High School upcoming juniors. The trip is made possible with grants from the Sherwin and Naomi Kripke Fund, The Abe and Dorothy Steinberg SKIP Fund, and the Jewish Experience Fund. We look forward to hearing the students tell us about their well deserved trip upon their return.

You can support our student’s fundraising efforts by hiring them to help with odd jobs throughout the year through the “Hire a Mensch” program. Your payment offsets the cost of their trip to Israel. Please contact KBrody@cbitoledo.org to request a time and date for students to help out. They can help with yard clean up, computer help, silver polishing or other odd jobs.
