Notes from the Cantor EXPLORING 2000 YEARS OF EUROPEAN JEWISH HISTORY Since our CBI bulletin deadline is already past and Chuck in our office has been nice enough to hold off printing till I return from overseas, I am writing this article immediately upon returning from our grueling two week Jewish Mission to Europe. I want nothing more than to lay my heavy head on my office desk and go to sleep. But it’s too cluttered with things that have accumulated while I was gone, plus much memorabilia I obtained from our truly amazing trip. My body clock being 6 hours ahead, I awoke last night at 3 a.m., and, being unable to fall asleep again with indelible memories flooding my mind, I spent the next four hours devouring and completing an exciting book I had just begun to read on the return flight home from Hungary. Each night during the trip, before going to sleep, exhausted as we all were from schlepping all day, (I was amazed how well most of our group were able to maintain our pace) I would plan, coordinate, research, study maps etc. for the next day’s Jewish itinerary. I blogged at http:// cantorlichterman.com while the days’ events were still fresh on my mind. Then I’d edit the hundreds of photos I took daily on my ipad and backup iPhone. The edit and delete ability of these modern technological wonders, while timeconsuming, are nevertheless a great convenience. I still have not had time to complete the blog and post many photos. But I will! Late at night because of the time difference, I would check in with Jan on the status of our dear stepmother Margit who is terminally ill. I would also call our children to check in on our two newborn grandsons (one of whose britot I had just done days before our departure). Although I knew that the paperback book I randomly grabbed off a shelf when packing for the trip would serve as a great diversion from the many details of the trip that had preoccupied my mind, I didn’t get to pick up that book (Paranoia by Joseph Finder) until the return flight. There is evidence of Jewish communities in some of the places we visited going back as far as the Roman exile from Israel in 70 C.E. We visited 5 countries; the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, where some of Judaism’s largest, greatest and most prominent communities once existed in cities like Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and Prague. For example, the Rabbi who headed the Beth Din in Cape Town and who for a while was Rabbi in my father’s shul, had a great influence upon my family and my career. He had studied at Bratislava’s famous
yeshiva which was world renowned before World War II. I have rarely in my career encountered a Rabbi of that caliber anywhere, which says much for the quality and prestige of Bratislava’s yeshiva. It was particularly exhilarating to see some Jewish resurgence, particularly amongst young Jews, in these communities that were once almost completely obliterated. For example, our excellent informed Jewish guide in Budapest rediscovered her Judaism that was hidden from her by her parents as a survival instinct common to many post-Holocaust Jews. She stated that today in Budapest and other places it is “cool” and “hip” to reassert your Jewishness despite signs of increasing anti-Semitism. In Budapest there are now over 20 active shuls and four Jewish day schools with grades preschool through high school. On our boat we met a young Jewish waiter from Budapest who spoke Hebrew quite well and spent a few years in Israel. Imagine his excitement at encountering a group of 19 American Jews on his boat. Similar stories were told to us concerning Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Germany. In Regensburg, Germany where we visited the shul, they told us they are planning soon to expand their facility which they have outgrown. Today the community numbers 1000 Jews and has a religious school with lots of children. Their modest sanctuary on the sight of the previous shul that was destroyed on Kristallnacht seats about 200 and also will be greatly enlarged. On our first Shabbat we attended the Friday night service at Prague’s Spanish Synagogue, so called not because it is Sephardic, but because of its Moorish architecture. It is today an Ashkenazic Conservative congregation and one of the most magnificent shul edifices in the world, described in Prague tourist literature as “the most magnificent synagogue in Europe.” One could argue against that assertion if you have been to Florence, Rome, Budapest, St Petersburg, etc., as Europe has many magnificent synagogue buildings that have survived, besides the many treasures that were destroyed. I was invited to chant the two Kaddish prayers. The acoustics were beautifully reverberant and I was overcome with emotion at the honor of participating in the service in such an historical and majestic venue. What was more invigorating was that when we arrived there was seating for maybe 75 people but soon droves of young Jews began pouring into the shul so that they had to schlep out many more chairs. The service began 20 minutes late by which time there were some 150 people singing familiar Shabbat

Rabbinic Insights from Rabbi Jason As I write this I am sitting in front of the computer and I’m exhausted. I like to take advantage of the beautiful weather in spring and summer and get outside. Today was a beautiful day that began with an early morning golf lesson followed by an afternoon at the Detroit Tigers game (Comerica Park is my “happy place”) and then an evening on the baseball field coaching my son Josh’s travel baseball team. My arms are more sunburned than they should be and my shoulder hurts from teaching a group of 11-year-olds how to throw faster fastballs, but I couldn’t be more content. I thank God for these beautiful days and hope you enjoy them even half as much as I do. You may be wondering why a rabbi is writing about baseball in the synagogue bulletin. The answer is that there is a lot you can learn from the American pastime and I’m not referring to told the old joke that Torah begins with a tip of the hat to baseball: “In the Big Inning.” Margie Bogdanow lists ten ways that baseball and Judaism are similar and I share those with you here: 1) Hard work, learning, and fun can go together. Neither baseball nor Judaism was necessarily meant to be easy. However, there is no reason that working hard to learn something can’t be fun.
2) Team and community are important. In baseball it is a team; in Judaism we call it a community. Either way, neither baseball nor Judaism is a solo sport.

melodies heartily and with gusto. I could not believe what I was hearing and experiencing! We found out Prague was hosting an East European young Jewish leadership conference and I met young Jews from Warsaw, Poland, Bucharest, Romania, Budapest, Hungary, Russia, etc. Bear in mind that Judaism in most of Europe was decimated not only by the Shoah but in the east by 40 years of Communist suppression. The resurgence I describe above has miraculously occurred in a mere 25 years, beginning with the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. After the service we ate dinner at the beautiful kosher King Solomon restaurant where sitting next to us was a large contingent of French Jews from B’nai Brith. With little language in common we soon found commonality by resoundingly singing familiar zemirot and Israeli songs together. I grabbed them and we began to dance ecstatically, overcome that as Jews, wherever we go, we share a common sacred denominator of Hebrew, music, siddur, Torah, and

4) A good manager can help people discover the right roles for themselves. Imagine if all Jewish communities worked to help participants find their places, find the spots where their unique gifts would be most appreciated, find the opportunities to contribute in the best way for them, and, by each contributing their strengths, thriving communities were created. 5) Wouldn’t it be great to have a cleanup batter and designated hitter? I know that many of us in synagogue leadership (both professional and volunteer) feel like we are both the cleanup batter and the designated hitter. Wouldn’t it be nice to share those responsibilities? 6) Every day matters, although it sometimes seems as if some days are more important than others. At this time of year, the “big games” take place in both baseball and Judaism. However, although it doesn’t always seem true, what happens in the spring is as important as what happens in September. A win in April, a meaningful Shabbat service in May – both truly have the same impact as a win at the ballpark or a full sanctuary at the High Holidays. 7) You can turn things around. Even the worst baseball teams have a few good seasons!
8) The young guys and the older guys are important. You can’t win by focusing on one at the expense of the other. The power is in the working together. 9) Baseball and religion can both be divisive if passions are carried to extreme – and can be unifying when treated with the respect they deserve. - Rabbi Jason Miller

I feel privileged, as I am sure do all 19 participants, to have had such a rare opportunity, as was the case with our South African mission, to travel together and explore our People’s glorious European history and revival. I am deeply grateful to Lee and Gail Kwait who worked tirelessly to make this trip happen. Message from the President As June approaches, I am reminded that Congregation B’nai Israel will once again hold its Annual Congregation Meeting on Sunday, June 14. Also, I will be completing my first full year as president of our congregation. I would like to express my appreciation to our Board of Trustees and our officers who have guided me with their thoughtful counsel and numerous suggestions for better services to our congregation. Of particular note I would like to thank our congregant and volunteer Miriam Beckerman for her generous and hard working management of our kitchen. Miriam organizes 52 delicious kiddushes per year and numerous holiday meals for our congregation. Each week, she and the dedicated Karen McQuade work to make each kiddush a special opportunity for our members to schmooze and dine after services. Also, a special thank you to Ellen Federman who will remain on our board but will be stepping down as Vice President for Religious Affairs. She has shown wonderful dedicated leadership by arranging for ushers and gabbaim for each Shabbat and High Holidays as well as leading our Ritual Committee. Retiring from our board and executive committee is Alix Greenblatt who has worked behind the scenes as VP of Administration to insure smooth operation of our office, proof reading our bulletin and numerous other very important organizational efforts which contributed to improving communications with our membership. Thank you Alix. Also retiring from our board is Sharon Rappaport Joehlin who has served our congregation by serving on many committees for the benefit of CBI. We wish Sharon much happiness now and in the future. We are particularly grateful to the Religious School teachers. Led by our wonderful principal Kim Brody, teachers Fagie Benstein, Hope Davis, Megan Miller, Paulette Sherline, Peter Silverman, Rabbi Alan Sokobin and Nick Thanasiu have successfully completed another school year during which we proudly confirmed six of our CBI students and created a warm educational environment for our children.
Our daily minyan owes so much to Howard Rosenbaum whose love of Torah is so apparent as he shares many of his mornings and evenings to ensure the continuation of these services for our congregants and those in mourning. David Weinberg and David Friedes also have done so much to help in our daily and Shabbat services, for which we are very grateful. If you’ve noticed how wonderful our synagogue building and grounds look, you need look no further than Larry Johnson who puts his heart into whatever he does around our shul. Larry is a very important part of our B’nai Israel staff to whom were very appreciative. Congregation B’nai Israel has been very fortunate to have Cantor Ivor Lichterman’s steady, creative and indefatigable leadership these last four years. Having had the opportunity to work closely with him this last year has been a wonderful and memorable experience as he has taught me so much while I witnessed the caring efforts he makes for our religious school students and congregation. When you call CBI, you are often greeted by the friendly, helpful voice of Rhoda Miller. Rhoda is responsible for Community Outreach and is often in touch with our congregants particularly during both happy and sad times as she strives also to help our members. Lastly, I would like to thank Chuck Traugott who has helped me greatly in the first half of my term as our treasurer and more recently as our synagogue administrator. Chuck has brought a wealth of business experience to our office operation and he has already made many valuable contributions to improving our communications with our members and other Jewish community arms. I have enjoyed my first term as your president and appreciated the many thoughtful suggestions and notes that I have received from my fellow congregants. It is my hope that CBI will be an even more welcoming and vibrant congregation in the coming years. Your continued support toward that goal mean so much to me and your synagogue leadership.

Oral Histories have begun. The committee is interviewing as many members of the congregation as possible. Interviews are videotaped and transcribed. Everyone who is interviewed will review and approve the final transcript before it is printed and archived. Excerpts of interviews may be incorporated into the 150th celebration. The interviews will be Honor | Celebrate | Inspire archived and the oral histories will become a permanent record of the history of Congregation B’nai Israel. The Yizkor Book Dear B’nai Israel Congregants,
For many of us, one of the most important parts of the Services during the High Holy Days is the Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur. It is at that time when we turn our thoughts to our Loved Ones who have left this earth. We use this meaningful time to reflect upon their lives, as well as the lives of all those who were members of our congregation, family and friends. In addition, we take the time to formally recognize the Martyrs of our people, most especially the Six Million who were murdered during the Holocaust. As part of this process, we print a more permanent Yizkor Book, which will contain the Yizkor Service, a list of those on the synagogue’s Memorial Plaques, and a memorial to the Six Million. Not only is this book substantial and permanent, but anyone who wishes will be able to take it home with him, for use during the year. I would urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity, as a way of remembering those dearest to us, and at the same time, helping the congregation. An order form is printed below. 2016 Confirmation Trip to Israel Informational Meeting
Through the generosity of the Sherwin and Naomi Kripke Israel Trip Fund at the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation, we are thrilled to announce that we have begun planning for the Confirmation Class Trip to Israel which is scheduled for June 7-15, 2016! The students are from the high school graduating classes of 2017, 2018 and 2019. An informational meeting will be held on Monday, June 15 at 6:15 p.m. for all students planning to join the trip and their parents. Cantor Lichterman and Matt Kripke will be the chaperones. To be eligible for the trip, students must attend Sunday School through their Confirmation or they will be responsible for repayment of the full cost of the trip. Please rsvp for the meeting. An Important Message from BITUSY Toledo's USY chapter BITUSY would like to host Fall Boards on October 15-18. Before committing to hosting this convention we need to ensure that we will have volunteers to host the USY’ers in homes for two nights (Thursday and Friday), breakfast, transportation to and from B’nai Israel, and help in the kitchen preparing meals. We also need several homes within walking distance to the shul. The decision to have the Fall Boards in Toledo must be made within a few weeks. Shabbat Luck On Friday, April 24th, fifty-two people joined fellow congregants in welcoming Shabbat with dinner at four homes. Hosting this wonderful event were Anne and Jeff Bauer, Alix and Dick Greenblatt, Rena and Michael Leizerman, and Debbie and Bert Spangenthal. It was a great way to enjoy time with friends and get to know some new people. Everyone commented that they had a delicious and fun evening. Thanks to Rena Leizerman for bringing this idea to B’nai Israel and to the Shabbat Luck committee of Jill Kripke, Kim Brody, and Fran Weinblatt. We hope that even more members will have this Shabbat experience next year.
