RETHINKING TISHA B’AV The balmy summer months of July and August have arrived! Children are off to camp and other vacations. Oh what a joyous time it is – no school! Many adults also plan to get away and take a break. Hopefully you’ll return refreshed in anticipation of the heavy onslaught of the High Holy Days. Jan and I were away for our youngest child, our only daughter, Jackie’s wedding in Connecticut on June 25th.

In the corresponding period in our Hebrew calendar, the months of Tammuz and Av are dominated by the three weeks of mourning. These connect the half fast day Shiva Asar (17th) B’Tammuz with the full fast of Tisha (9th) B’Av, a day of multiple national histor ic tr agedies. Dur ing this period there are no Jewish celebrations, and in planning Jackie’s wedding we had to work around it.

The 17th of Tammuz commemorates the Romans piercing the walls of Jerusalem. This precipitated the ultimate destruction of the Temple, Jerusalem, and Israel as a Jewish state on the ninth of Av. This second exile led to a dispersion that would last 1900 years. The first Temple was also destroyed on the ninth of Av. Coincidentally I am writing this article while in our yearly Torah reading cycle we are reading the Torah portion Sh’lach (Number s 13 – 15) for which I am in the midst of preparing a d’var Torah/sermon. Sh’lach is considered as the source for Tisha B’Av. How is that possible if the Torah predates the two destructions of 586 BCE and 70 AD respectively by millennia?

Sh’lach includes the notorious story of the meraglim – the twelve spies, one from each tribe, whom Moses sent to reconnoiter the Promised Land. Ten returned with a negative report as to the Children of Israel’s ability to conquer the land despite their awareness that it was a divine promise. Their report caused chaos amongst the people, some of whom rebelled and even wanted to return to Egypt!

The dire consequences of this lack of faith take on a life of their own as Judaism developed an entire theology of fatalism, sin and divine retribution. The Torah states that there and then God decided that that generation of the Exodus would die out in the desert as punishment for their lack of faith. In describing the people’s reaction to God’s wrath over the spies’ lack of faith, Numbers 14: 1 states, “The people raised their voice and cried.” The Mishna going even fur ther , states, “That was the ninth of Av; the Holy One said to them: “You have wept without cause; therefore I will set this day aside for weeping throughout the generations.”” (Ta’anit 4: 6) The Midrash goes further yet, stating, “At that moment it was decreed that the Temple will be destroyed and Israel exiled among the nations” (Tanhuma Parshat Sh’lach 12). Conservative Jewish theology questions these approaches in light of Jewish history being so fundamentally impacted by two contemporary watershed events- the Shoah/Holocaust, and what followed soon after - the creation of the modern State of Israel.

One example of the impact on Conservative theology is in the Holiday Musaf prayer “Umipnay chata’einu galinu mayartseinu – Because of our sins we were exiled from our land.” These words appear in small print in our Conservative prayer book, so that the Hazzan has the option to chant them aloud, or omit them.

As a second-generation Shoah survivor, this fatalistic theology of Jewish tragedy emanating from the spy story in parshat Sh’lach, affects me profoundly. It is one reason I choose to be a Conservative Jew rather than Orthodox. I cannot daven words that seem to imply that Jewish tragedies like the Shoah are divine retribution for our own sins. Orthodox liturgy seems static to me, and its adherents bound by theology and liturgy developed millenia ago.

I see Conservative Judaism as constantly evolving, along with its accompanying liturgy that should reflect its theology. In acknowledgement that we have Israel back, Conservative Judaism omits some prayers and readings referring to Israel’s and Jerusalem’s destruction. We end the fast early at 12:30 PM rather than at dark after 25 hours of fasting.

As Our New Building Turns 10.

Our shul, our congregational home, our synagogue, is 10 years old. If you are new to the congregation and want to learn about the move, or are just feeling a bit nostalgic, or just want to see pictures of old friends, take a look at the video prepared by Roanne and Lannie Katzman. It is on our web site, under the “News” tab; just click on “Moving West Toledo”. It’s a great walk down memory lane.

One of the first things I did upon becoming President was ask for a tour. There are a lot of places in the building that I had not seen and it was interesting to find out where everything is located. I think the only places I did not visit were the ladies room and the roof. It is a great building though as with any complicated structure, there are things that need attention. Currently, Chuck Traugott, our Synagogue Administrator, with funding from the Phyllis Diamond Gift Shop, is working on preventative maintenance and updating of the large refrigerator and freezer in our kitchen both to prevent problems from arising and to save on our electric bill. We can also take pride in our beautiful grounds which seem especially resplendent this Spring. The latest addition is the Rabbi Fishel Pearlmutter memorial tree to the right as you enter the building donated by Frances Pearlmutter Blumenfeld and Family. We have a wonderful building and grounds, a treasure to enjoy now and to keep fresh for the future.

I know many who hold fond memories of our previous building, and for whom moving was emotionally difficult. But it is the same when your family moves to a new home. You may miss the old place, and think of it often, but there were reasons why you moved, and you are still a family. With that in mind, I have to give thanks to those who came before us who thought about the future, and made decisions that affect us now.

One day our successors may need to make a similar decision. But for now, we have a building that is the right size, is well-maintained, is in a good location, and which provides a beautiful venue for worship, study and social gatherings. I hope that those who had the foresight to see what was needed, those who planned and executed our relocation, and those who provided the financial backing, take great satisfaction to see what they made possible.
