A DREAM COME TRUE– PART II

Many coincidences occurred during our trip, from which our students experienced an ever shrinking world and just how small Israel actually is. For example, Miranda Hupp, wear ing a Miami of Ohio University shirt on one of our plane rides, met a Miami U student who knew her brother Noah (who was on our previous CBI trip) from the Glee Club and remarked to her on his beautiful voice.

Another example was at a gas station outside our archeological dig, while eating lunch we ran into a couple from my previous synagogue in Arizona, whom I haven’t seen in many years as they had moved away. Seeing them and their now adult children was a joy. Also at the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem where there were perhaps some 1000 people for Shavuot services, we sat right next to the Cantor who succeeded me in Stamford, Ct. 25 years ago…Israel is indeed a small country!

A highlight of the trip (of which there were many) was when I invited Yaakov Friedman (formerly Zhiang of China then Toledo) who made Aliyah to Israel a year ago, to visit with us and speak to our students. He drove with his lovely wife and 3 beautiful young daughters for an hour and a half to meet with us.

At first he was hesitant, saying he had no idea what to say. But once he began, he had me in tears, and our students, as tired as they all were from a full day of activities and travel, were mesmerized by his family’s on going Jewish journey, as he told what they have gone through to become Jewish, live in Israel and gain acceptance.

This dream come true trip has without doubt enhanced our students’ positive view of Israel, and their understanding of Judaism, as well as their knowledge of the centrality of Israel and Jerusalem in our lives. Our amazing guide Yair (whom some wanted to put in a suitcase and smuggle to Toledo) did much for our appreciation of Israel.

The memories will be with us forever! I am deeply appreciative We bussed, hiked, crawled, dug, climbed, schlepped, waded, swam and davened our way all over Israel, often filling our days to all who made this trip possible, whom I acknowledged in last month’s CBI bulletin. It is truly a beracha that we at CBI are one with 4 or 5 different and contrasting activities and adventures.

We walked the ancient excavations of the old city of Jerusalem, of very few synagogues in the world that are able to provide an placed prayers in the Kotel and davened there several times. On almost free trip to so many of our students as a benefit of the subject of davening, we visited 3 different shuls in Jerusalem membership. that I had selected for contrasting Shabbat and Shavuot services, I am truly grateful to the two wonderful chaperones Matt Kripke somewhat different from what we do at B’nai. The highlight may and Alison Sherman who were right there beside me at all times, well have been the 400 year old Italian shul where Jeremy Davis to keep our students safe and ensure the best possible experience! belted out the Levi Aliyah in a manner that made us all proud, the echoes of which are still reverberating in our ears!

Hazzan Ivor Lichterman By the time you read this article, it will be a few weeks since our group of 19 returned from our Israel Confirmation trip. We spent 8 days plus 2 days traveling from June 6 – 16. This is the 4th CBI Confirmation Israel trip to date, from which 54 students and several adults have benefitted.

Many of you have undoubtedly heard about the trip, read my blog which each participant contributed towards, and seen photos which fortunately in today’s cyber and digital world are so easy to share. Needless to say it was an amazing adventure! I am sure it has inspired all participants as it has in the past, and we shall have the opportunity in the near future to hear from them first hand as they report back to you.

We traversed Israel at a frenzied pace, keeping the students stimulated and unceasingly occupied from dawn till late at night.

Not surprising they had no time to get into any trouble! They are doubtless catching up on some much needed and deserved sleep as I write this now.

We traversed the heights of the Golan at the north-east Syrian border, to the hostile north-western Lebanese border, where we observed Hezbollah encampments up the hill literally less than a mile away. There we were hosted by a group of handsome Israeli soldiers not much older than our students, whose families originated from all over the world. They protect Israel 24/7, and we gave them gifts donated by our Federation and snacks.

To the south we muddied ourselves and floated in the depths of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. We ascended Masada at 5:30 AM before daybreak while it was cool enough, and observed the sun rise to a typically hot over 100 degree Israeli summer’s day. But Josh Sherman’s r ecor d 19 minute climb up the snake path to the crest of Masada, remains intact from our trip 3 years ago, as we took the easy way up. Cowards! Even I was not huffing and puffing up the gradual (as opposed to steep) ascent, despite daily falafel and chicken schnitzel consumption, with a comfortable cable car descent!

There is story attached to the Aliyah that is notable: Asher Kripke (also a Levi) mistook the gabbai’s mixed-accented ‘are you a Levi?’ question for ‘are you leaving?’ and answering ‘no’ Jeremy got it by default! Jeremy you owe Asher! On Friday night we attended the only Orthodox synagogue in the world that has a woman Cantor who chants from behind the mechitza (the women’s section). The bimah is half in the men’s and half in the women’s section with a curtain splitting it.

We put on tefillin at 3 incredible destinations - the Kotel, Masada, and Lake Kinneret at the Sea of Galilee, where we also observed many Christian groups pilgrimaging in Israel. At our hotel at the Kinneret was a large Mennonite Amish contingent.

President’s Message………………………………………………

Tuning up for a big year Everyone reading this column knows that this is a big year for CBI, with our 150th anniversary celebration, exciting plans for the David S. Stone Religious School, wonderful adult education programs, and much more.

All of this is made possible by the outstanding efforts of our clergy, staff and members. I wish to offer my sincere gratitude to all those who have worked so hard for our congregation. In particular, I am grateful to those on our board of trustees whose terms have ended, those who continue to serve, and those who have taken the plunge and are joining our board. We have a lot to do, and I trust it will be a rewarding experience. Most importantly, I thank our past president, Jeff Bauer, who has set a high standard for me and for future presidents. With the help of the board, and many others, I hope we can meet that standard.

Thinking about how a congregation functions, and what my role is, it struck me that, in some ways, CBI is like an orchestra. When we are all hitting the right note, at the right time, all is well. But it is hard to do that consistently, and one sour note, or early entrance leaves a lasting impression. If I hit a sour note this year, I welcome your letting me know, hopefully with some idea for improvement.

But this analogy is not perfect. Who is the conductor? For our services and so many other parts of our CBI lives, it is our dear Hazzan. At daily minyan, it is Howard Rosenbaum. During the High Holidays and at other times, Rabbi Miller steps in. For many important functions that keep our congregation alive and well, it is Chuck Traugott. For the religious school, it is Kim Brody. For setting the direction of the congregation, it is your board of trustees. I’m sure you can think of other conductors, many of whom step forward, often quietly and asking no particular recognition. Am I the conductor? Well, yes and no.

Our orchestra has many conductors who all have their roles, and I and the board will try to keep it all together and in tune.

So maybe my role is to keep the board playing in tune. What is your role? Please feel free to step up and get involved, even if you haven’t been practicing a lot.

And don’t be afraid to hit a sour note. After all, at CBI, you are among friends, and we can always work on it together.

An Interview with the 150th Anniversary Co-Chairmen Fagie Benstein, Cathy Sperling, Sharon Stein Why are you involved in the 150th?

Sharon: My husband and I feel a connection to B’nai Israel and the community that we are part of. Our family roots at B’nai Israel go back to the 1930’s when my husband’s grandmother and her children went to shul on 12 th and Bancroft. We raised our children in the synagogue, and we are both active members now.

Cathy: B’nai Israel is my home. My mother, my children and I were confirmed here. My parents and my husband and I were married by Rabbi Goldberg and our children were consecrated, confirmed and Bar and Bat Mitzvah here at B’nai Israel.

What has surprised you?

Cathy: Finding minutes that go back to 1932 and r eading the boar d discussions about tr ansitioning fr om an Orthodox to a Conservative congregation.

Sharon: Listening to the fir st r ehear sal of the Ruach Chor us with its over 20 member s sing melodies for the fir st time beautifully as if they had been a chorus for years.

What is your most important goal of the 150 anniversary?

Fagie: The 150th Anniversary of our congregation belongs to all of us. Whether a recent member of our congregational extended family, or a member for many years, this celebration belongs to ALL OF US!

As a co-chair please list four things that have given you the most pleasure?

Fagie: My pleasur e…1) Working with my very able, committed and passionate co-chairs, Cathy Sperling and Sharon Stein. 2) Over 100 creative, excited, volunteers participating on the many different committees that will make all events exciting, joyful and memorable. 3) The satisfaction of celebrating and honoring the immense contributions that our congregation has made to Conservative Judaism, and to our community. 4) The enormous generosity of so many who have contributed to the 150th Anniversary fundraising opportunities.

Sharon: 1) Ther e ar e many things, among which is the cr eation of the Ar chives. This will allow futur e gener ations of B’nai Israel members to learn more about our shared history, as well as providing the synagogue a system for preserving the legacy of our congregation. 2) That not only have I been fortunate to have gotten to know more members of our congregation, but also that many members are meeting and working with members they didn’t know before. 3) That our members have shared in our vision for creating a great year for all of us. 4) That the vision of inclusiveness, and the theme of Honor, Celebrate, and Inspire has remained paramount in the planning of our 150 th Anniversary.

What do you want the members to know:

Cathy: We have wor ked ver y har d to include ever yone in this milestone. We have reached out to hundr eds of people who were confirmed here between 1940 & 2016. We know we missed many and are sorry about that. We have used the internet as much as possible to keep costs low. People have been supportive and generous and because of that we will be able to charge only a minimal amount for meals and most of our activities and events will be free! If you’ve missed the deadline for the Chai Campaign, feel free to contribute to the 150 th Tribute Fund!

Sharon: We happily anticipate a lar ge tur nout for our events.

David S. Stone Religious School I hope you are all having an enjoyable and relaxing summer. Our Confirmation class trip to Israel was definitely the trip of a lifetime for our 16 students, as well as chaperones. Please see the blog at cantorlichterman.com for photos and details of their amazing trip. I want to thank all of the supporters of the Hire a Mensch Project that helped offset cost of the trip. The program was also a terrific way for our students and congregants to get to know each other. The students raised over $2,200.00 throughout the course of the project. I would like to expand the project and continue it next year to benefit the Religious School and Youth Department, more details to follow. Enjoy the remainder of the summer and please mark your calendars for a back to school breakfast on the first day, August 28.
