NOTES FROM THE CANTOR RETURNING TO MY ROOTS This is a time of year when we often think of our roots, our families, our childhood, where we came from along with where we are headed in the new calendar year. I had the rare privilege to be able to return to my roots at the distant southern shores of Africa towards the end of 2013.

I returned home to visit my 91 year old dear mother Miriam in Cape Town, near the southern tip of Africa. I say ‘rare opportunity’ since it’s so far and expensive that I don’t get enough opportunities to visit her. But then again how often is ‘enough’? What was different this time is that I was accompanied by 22 members of our Jewish community and we were met in Cape Town by our son and daughter in law, Ari and Hayley, who joined part of our tour making a total group of 25.

Although I have always wanted to lead a tour from my previous congregations, it somehow never worked out.

But meeting the Kwaits soon after I moved to Toledo, cemented the group tour, with much coordination and hard work on their part to make it happen. I believe our group was enriched by, amongst other amazing experiences, being able to join me in spending Shabbat with my mother at her home synagogue and enjoying a delicious catered Shabbat meal at our hotel together.

That same day, before Shabbat, we had the opportunity to visit my late father’s former synagogue, which still exists but no longer is a shul. Sadly it houses an antique furniture store, but the building has been declared a historical treasure which safeguards it from exterior alteration. Other than the name on the outside and paint color scheme, the exterior is as I remember it, on the corner of Rabbi Mirvish Avenue, named for one of its famed beloved Rabbis.

The store was open and as our group entered, we stood where my late father served over 30 years pouring his heart out in services whose musical beauty became legend all over South Africa. I am glad to say that many of his devoted students, now dispersed all over the world, use this treasury of Polish synagogue music to inspire their respective congregations, as do his two sons. This is a true affirmation of the epitaph at the foot of his tombstone at Cape Town’s Jewish cemetery – v’hamangina l’olam nisheret – the melody lives on forever. For after the Holocaust, that he and my mother had survived, one of his passions became to keep alive this musical treasury he so adeptly represented in his career.

Not two weeks after our return from this life-altering experience, South Africa was thrust into the international limelight with the passing of its great former leader Nelson Mandela at the age of 95. With multiple images of places our group had just experienced pasted all over the media, we grasped just how blessed we were to be able to follow Mandela’s historical footsteps. For he was an extraordinary leader, undoubtedly one of the greats of the twentieth century, that some of today’s leaders would do well to emulate.

As we begin 2014, Jan and our children Mayron, Jenna, Chandler, Ari, Hayley, and Jackie join me in wishing you all a healthy, blessed year.

Please join us at B’nai Israel on Shabbat January 11th, Shabbat Shira, which is the Sabbath of Song, so designated because we chant the Song of the Crossing of the Sea from the Book Of Exodus, in which I will offer a special musical program.

We welcome Caren Zaft as the Synagogue Administrator at B'nai Israel

It is customary to honor our clergy with a monetary gift on occasions when they have extended themselves for us. In times of distress and mourning, for simchas and any other acts of kindness, a donation can be sent to the Cantor’s Discretionary Fund in appreciation.

Caren has been a member of B'nai Israel since birth. She has been influenced by her parents, Sherrie and Morton Zaft (z"l) as well as a number of past leaders of blessed memory including Aunt Jean Liber, and Uncle Goody Liber. She credits her Jewish education and love of Judaism from the clergy of our congregation.

This fund is used by Hazzan Lichterman to provide financial aid to congregants in need, support educational projects and programming, etc. Please consider a gift to this fund so our Hazzan can continue his good works.

Recently Caren catalogued our synagogue library and has been volunteering in the office. Following a 30-year career in Hotel Management that saw her residing in many U.S. cities, Caren has returned to us full-circle.

PRESIDENTS’ CORNER Happy New Year!

It may be a quiet January other places, but many things are going on at B’nai Israel! Don’t forget to come to the L’Chaim party, with dinner, dancing, and a vodka martini tasting on January 11. This “funraiser” is sure to be a great time.

There are many changes in the office. Caren Zaft is our new Synagogue Administrator. She will be your go-to person for asking questions and solving problems. Feel free to say hi to her when you are in the building. The office will again be open Monday through Friday in order to provide the best service for all of our congregants and often there will be someone in the office during Sunday School hours.

We are also grateful to Stephen Lamb, our USY Advisor and religious school teacher, who covered office duties for a short period, but has chosen to revert back to his previous role. We hope Stephen will hang around and continue to engage our USYers and religious school students for a long time.

Our most exciting news: THE MORTGAGE IS PAID OFF!!!!! Thanks to the hard work of previous administrations, careful fiscal management, and supporters who paid more than 90% of their building pledges (an outstandingly high rate), we have decided to write that last check. If you have not yet paid your building pledge, please consider doing it now so that we may restore our savings funds. We should all be proud of ourselves. Look for news about a note-burning celebration (Party? Did I hear party? – Meira).

We are happy for Ron and Wanda Wachsman and hope that they are adapting well to their move to Houston.

We know that the Jewish community there will welcome them with open arms.

150 Year Anniversary Honor - Celebrate - Inspire

Congregation B'nai Israel is turning 150 years in 2016, and we want you to become part of the celebration.

Our Steering Committee has been meeting this past year developing major goals for the celebration. We will be establishing committees to plan different programs for the anniversary year.

If you would like to become involved in this once-in-a-lifetime year, join us when the Steering Committee meets on Sunday, January 26th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Synagogue.

Our January Bar Mitzvah Noah Leizerman will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Congregation B’nai Israel. Noah will be celebrating this occasion with his mother, Jessica Leizerman, his brother Caleb, and his grandparents, E. J. and Betty Leizerman.

Noah attended the Hebrew Academy and is currently a seventh grade honor student at Westglades Middle School in Parkland, FL. Noah also helps tutor students in their Hebrew studies at the Kol Tikvah religious school as well as participating in the weekly Bible and Bagels Torah study sessions. As a Bar Mitzvah project Noah has successfully started an ongoing collection of donations to be given to the Petco We Are Family Foundation which helps to provide pet food and necessities to families so that they can keep their pets with them through difficult times.

While Noah enjoys the Florida sunshine and beaches, he continues to consider Toledo, Ohio and Congregation B’nai Israel as his home.

MEN’S CLUB Join the fun on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. when the Men’s Club travels to Bowling Green to see a fabulous hockey game between BGSU and Lake Superior State.

BITUSY (B’nai Israel Toledo United Synagogue Youth) was proud to send six members of USY and their advisor, Stephen Lamb, to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the USY Fall Kinnus. The week-end was filled with study, prayer and reconnecting with friends. United Synagogue Youth (USY) is the arm of the Conservative Movement for high school students. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL January Religious School Calendar

Our Religious School students have been very busy with numerous activities. The confirmation class finished up its comparative religion unit with our friends from Temple Shomer Emunim and had many enlightening guest speakers. We were fortunate to have Ruslan Slutsky speak about his personal immigration experience from Russia, and Rabbi Sokobin serve as substitute teacher while Hazzan Lichterman was in South Africa.

I hope all of you had the opportunity to view our Hanukkah movie starring our Religious School students, under the direction of Irina Zaurov and Abe MusherEizenman. We shared the Hanukkah film with our friends in the Western Galilee Partnership region.

Our B’nai Mitzvah class is participating in a book club project with their classmates from Shomer Emunim. The theme of the project is the Holocaust and the book title is The Four Perfect Pebbles. The book club is being facilitated by Marcia Kaplan.

Fifth graders instituted a tzedekah project to collect money for JFS ( Jewish Family Service). They will continue their Penny War Tzedekah Project until March, 2014. Youth Scholarships Availability Dear Congregants, Congregation B’nai Israel is pleased to provide scholarships to those families who would like their children to attend Jewish youth camps and Jewish youth programs. These scholarships are awarded based upon financial need of the families and specific scholarship guidelines to determine the amount of the scholarship. The following scholarships are available with the purpose of each scholarship; 1. The Yale Roberts Camp Ramah Fund provides up to $1000.00 per child per academic year for attending Camp Ramah summer camp.

2. The B’nai Israel Summer Youth Fund provides up to $500.00 per family per academic year to be used towards Conservative Jewish summer programs, including, yet not limited to USY Israel Pilgrimage, USY on Wheels, and Camp CRUSY. 3. The combined Helen Fink Burke/Bobbi and Amy Rosenbloom Youth Activities Fund provides up to $250.00 per family per academic year to be used towards any Jewish youth activity.

Please submit the applications for these funds to me at any time, however, please allow at least four (4) weeks to review the applications prior to any program payment deadlines. Separate applications must be submitted for each child. Scholarship applications will be reviewed strictly confidentially by a scholarship committee. I addition to these scholarships, non-B’nai Israel scholarships are available as well. These include the following: 1. The Diller Foundation is offering a scholarship award for Jewish teens across the United States who are actively involved in Tikun Olam projects. Applications can be obtained on line at: www.dillerteenawards.com 2. USY summer programs are offering a $100.00 discount by placing a deposit on 2014 USY summer programs and most 2014 summer programs have been held at 2013 prices. Please go online to www.usy.org/ escape to apply for USY scholarships for USY summer programs.

3. One Happy Camper allows USY members to be eligible for a $1000.00 scholarship for a USY summer programs based upon certain criteria. Funding is being granted by Foundation for Jewish Camp. Please go online at http://www.jewishcamp.org/happy-camper-eligibility for more information.

Please take advantage of these scholarships. We look forward to providing scholarship money to our families that will help allow our participants to have a very enjoyable Jewish youth program and Jewish camp experience.
