SHABBAT SHIRA – POWER OF MUSIC As I am sitting to write this article, it occurs to me that I haven’t written on music in quite a while. Most of my articles of late have been of a general Jewish nature rather than specifically music related. So it is timely that I get back in touch with my Cantorial side with the approach of Shabbat Shira – The Sabbath of Song which will occur on January 27th, and for which I will be offering two programs at CBI. Following are a few examples from our sources that demonstrate the power and centrality of music from all the way back to our earliest tradition.

Shabbat Shira – The Sabbath of Song gets its name from the Torah - Exodus chapter 15 which is called Shirat Hayam – The Song of the Sea. This is the Song that Moses and the Children of Israel sang immediately after reaching safety across the other side of the sea. They had just escaped from over two hundred years of Egyptian slavery as well as from the pursuing Pharaoh and his army. Imagine their ecstasy after this dramatic, miraculous escape. The first spontaneous expression of their joy, exultation and relief was to pour out their hearts in song. This attests to the power of human musical expression.

At the conclusion of the Song, Miriam, Moses’s sister takes a timbrel and leads the women in song and dance. Rashi and other sages comment on this remarkable fact - that the women had brought musical instruments with them amongst the limited, prized and necessary possessions they were able to carry. This again demonstrates our People’s preparedness for and devotion to music, song and dance.

Right at the beginning of this Song, in Exodus 15: 2 Moses and the People sing, ki ozi v’zimrat Yah – God is my strength and my song. Here singing and music are equated with strength, with power. This is the first time in the Torah that God’s four letter Name is shortened to the first two letters only, which spell Yah. There is a numerical/gematria association here in that the Hebrew letter yud = 10 and hay = 5, total 15; therefore chapter 15, symbolizing God’s name Yah, is the number of this chapter of the Song of the Sea. The haftorah for Shabbat Shira parallels the Song of the Sea, from Judges 5, the Song of the Judge Deborah and Barak, “I will sing to the Lord and make music to the God of Israel.” The entire tribe of Levi, from whom Moses descended, was devoted to music and song, as our liturgy declares, u-Leviim l’shira u-l’zimra – the Levites are for song and music. Right near the beginning of the Torah there is a reference to music, one of the earliest in recorded history, Genesis 4: 20, “Adah gave birth to...Yuval who was the father of all who play harp and flute.” (’kinor’ is also translated as violin).

Some of the earliest records of music as therapy are also in the Bible, such as in I Samuel 16: 15 – 23, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you (King Saul). Let our Lord command his servants here to search for someone who plays the harp. He will play...and you will feel better. Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief came to Saul, he would feel better and the evil spirit would leave him.”

On the weekend of January 27 - 28 in honor of Shabbat Shira I will present two special programs of Jewish music in words and music: the first on Shabbat 1/27 at 9:30 a.m. when I will sing different music to highlight various prayers and offer an unusual musical sermon. On Sunday 1/28 at 10:30 a.m. as part of our adult education series, I will present Legendary Cantors of the Golden Era – an amazing movie with the only live footage of some of the greatest Cantors including Yossele Rosenblatt (filmed right before he died) and several others. This free program will include film, recordings, legends of Hazzanut, and I will perform extracts from some of their greatest compositions.

Is a Driverless Car Like a Shabbat Elevator?

No, this is not meant as a riddle, at least not on purpose. It all started with a question on the front page of the December issue of the Forward, “Are Self-Driving Cars Kosher for Shabbat?” The article inside, “Thou shalt not drive” provided some background regarding what is prohibited on Shabbat, and noted that some of those who are developing such vehicles see Shabbat-observant Jews as potential customers. Most of us have encountered a Shabbat elevator, programmed to open at all floors and requiring no buttons to be pushed.

And some kitchen appliances have a Shabbat mode to prevent lights from coming on and disabling many automatic features. So, if an observant Orthodox Jew will ride in a Shabbat elevator, will he or she ride in a self-driving car? If you can pre-program the car the day before, you need do no “work”.

And if it has an electric, rather than internal combustion engine, there is no fire. So what rule does it break?

We all know we are not to perform work on Shabbat, but what constitutes this forbidden work? The word used in Exodus as Moses receives the ten commandments is m’lachah. In our own Etz Chayim Chumash, the corresponding notes indicate that the prohibited labor is not defined. But based on when this word again appears, the Rabbis took it to mean work associated with erecting and maintaining the sanctuary during our wandering in the wilderness. From this, they listed 39 things that are not to be done on the Sabbath. Perhaps most famously, kindling a fire is forbidden, but so is extinguishing a fire. Tying and untying are forbidden. Many forbidden activities, like shearing, reaping, curing hides, and others, are unlikely to be on our to-do lists. Of course, the sages have adapted these prohibitions over the years to fit the times. For example, there is no specific prohibition related to the use of toilet paper thousands of years ago, before it existed. But its most common form, perforated sheets on a role, requires tearing, which is prohibited. If you are really interested in a solution to the toilet paper problem, there are many suggestions available on the internet. Another obvious example is the prohibition of turning on and off electric circuits, which is taken as equivalent to kindling and extinguishing a fire. This would include such things as using your cell phone or a camera.

How about driving a car? Obviously this was not specifically forbidden in Exodus. Many would say it violates two forbidden actions. Firstly, there is the prohibition against kindling fire. Even if it is an electric car, this would seem to still be a violation given the widely-accepted equivalence of activating a circuit and kindling a fire. Secondly, we are not to take objects from private to public domain, or to transport an object in the public domain. So, besides not carrying things about, this would also seem to preclude driving, at least beyond your own driveway.

For us Conservative Jews, we have a “responsum” (a rabbinic ruling) from 1950 that it is acceptable to drive on Shabbat, but strictly for purposes of going to synagogue if you live too far away to walk. This was, and for many still is, controversial. However, it is important to note that this was not a simple yes-orno ruling or a compromise, but rather a part of a plan offered to “revitalize the Sabbath”. To look at only the one aspect of this responsum does not do it justice. And it led me to look at the question from a different perspective. I felt the whole question of what is forbidden should be matched with positive actions.

Maybe we should not be asking only what are we not allowed to do, but rather what we should do. We are to remember Shabbat, and to keep it holy. It is a day set aside from everyday work, but not away from study, contemplation, reflection, family. Here is a my shortened and paraphrased version of the parts of the “Program to Revitalize the Sabbath” in the responsum: Ushering in the Sabbath with the home ritual; Preparations for Shabbat beforehand; Attendance at public worship at least once during Shabbat; Use some time to study Torah or other sacred literature; Refrain from activities that are not absolutely necessary and which are not in keeping with he spirit of Shabbat; Recreation should be that which would enhance spirituality; Refrain from using a motor vehicle, but where a family resides beyond a reasonable walking distance from the synagogue, the use of a car is not a violation of Shabbat, and attendance at synagogue is deemed an expression of loyalty to our faith.

One other thing I found was a surprise connection to our congregation, which I will be happy to share with you when you walk, drive or ride to shul.

Our students in grades 4-9 participated in an amazing Hanukkah party live with our chaverim in Israel. Peter Silverman has been planning a joint Hanukkah party for months with the help of his teacher aides, Asher Kripke and Ian Mahoney. The students did a live one hour video conference with a school in our Partnership region of the Western Galillee.

They lit Hanukkah candles together, ate sufganiyot, introduced themselves and told about Jewish life here, and performed Hanukkah songs for one another. They also had the opportunity to play the Hanukkah game Kahoot together by all logging onto their devices. These experiences are an incredible way for our students to connect with Jewish students in Israel to find our similarities and get to know one another.

Our Challenges of Jewish Parenting series kicked off with Dr. Jason C. Levine, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Clinic Director at University of Toledo. He facilitated an insightful workshop for 22 of our parents who attended. Everyone walked away with high praises about Dr. Levine and so much useful information from other parents as well. We are looking forward to our second workshop on January 21. The topic is How to Help Y our Child Make Dating Decisions, facilitated by Rabbi Jason Miller.

On Saturday evening, December 2, over 60 players competed as eight teams to see who could best master the Quiz Night challenges. The eight rounds of questions covered a range of topics including ‘Jewish Music Makers’, ‘Famous Generals’, and ‘Where Was it Invented?’. Points could be won for correct answers, answers to complete trivia bonus questions and even the funniest wrong answers. The competition also included puzzles to be completed by each team. Quiz Night also featured a silent auction of over thirty items ranging from legal services, massages and hair care, to original art and fine crystal. The auction raised over $1000 to support future programming.

Appetizers, wine and beer were plentiful, and for those in danger of football withdrawal, the Ohio State-Wisconsin game was shown on the big screen in the library. A fun and memorable evening was enjoyed by all.

INTRAFAITH BLOOD DRIVE UPDATE The Blood Drive at Etz Chayim on November 11, 2017, was a fine effort. The Red Cross collected 22 pints of whole blood, Potentially enough to save 66 lives. We congratulate the Jewish Community.

SAVE THE DATE Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo’s 9th Annual

Jewish Disability Awareness Month Program Sunday, February 11 Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo has partnered with Temple Shomer Emunim, Congregation B’nai Israel, and Etz Chayim to offer the community a new perspective on understanding and managing anxiety in children and adults.

On Sunday, February 11, at Temple Shomer Emunim, the 9 th annual JDAIM program will engage religious school students from kindergarten to high school grades and their parents in continuation with last year’s mental health theme.
