Notes from the Cantor ……………………………………….

(A DIFFERENT) POWER OF MUSIC (II) This article is a continuation of the theme of last month’s article The Power of Music that I wrote in honor of Shabbat Shira – The Sabbath of Song which we celebrated at the end of January.

The world, particularly the United States, has lately been rocked by scandals of sexual abuse and impropriety mainly against women. The Jewish world, and of particular interest to this column – the world of Jewish music, has not emerged unscathed as revelations against the late, great ‘singing Rabbi’ Shlomo Carlebach have come to the forefront, including from his own daughter Neshama.

Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, who passed in 1994, revolutionized aspects of Judaism and particularly Jewish music. I have a vast collection of recordings of which Carlebach’s ‘Shabbos in Shomayim,’ is amongst my most prized albums. I recall a concert he gave when I was a student at the University of Cape Town (UCT). A huge sellout crowd of over 2000 mostly young Jewish students came to hear him. He arrived a half hour late by which time the crowd was already raucous, clapping, dancing and singing his rousing melodies. I was lucky enough to have an aisle seat and observed him closely and with great interest. After all, here was a great Jewish American musical legend that I was going to be privileged to hear in person, a rare treat for us South Africans at that time who were otherwise shunned through political boycotts over Apartheid. Carlebach walked down the aisle, hugging, kissing and embracing all the pretty girls on both sides of the aisle. By the time he got to the stage, another half hour had elapsed so that the concert started an hour late. But he brought the house down!

Many Jewish institutions, clergy and performers now face the moral dilemma of whether to blacklist his music, or just simply how to react. An analogous dilemma concerns the music or other work of anyone who was detrimental to Jews and Judaism in general. For example the tradition at Jewish weddings in South Africa, including my own father’s shul, was to welcome the bride to Richard Wagner’s beautiful Bridal Chorus from his 1850 opera Lohengrin, popularly known as ‘Here Comes the Bride.’ Yet Wagner was a notorious anti-Semite whose vitriolic anti-Jewish writings influenced Nazi doctrine. I switched to using Jewish music for weddings. For many years Wagner’s music was banned by Israel’s Philharmonic Orchestra.

On November 9th 2009, the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, also Kristallnacht, the great Argentinian Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim, who since 1992 has been music director of Germany’s most famous opera house, Berlin’s Staatsoper, was asked to lead an appropriate concert for the occasion. He included in his program music by Richard Wagner, along with the Jewish composer Arnold Schoenberg’s “A Survivor From Warsaw,” a tribute to Jewish victims of Nazism.

In an interview in the Wall Street Journal on April 24th 2009 by J. S. Marcus, he stated, concerning this seemingly strange juxtaposition of Wagner and Schoenberg, that people who criticize his choice of concert music are wrong: “People have a problem with Wagner not because he was anti-Semitic...It was the use – or abuse – of his writing by the Nazis...But it’s not Wagner. If we give into that, we are basically giving in to Hitler and his people.”

I saw a portrayal of the Russian composer Tchaikovsky by the Jewish performer Hershey Felder. While researching for his role, Felder came across an anti-Semitic note by Tchaikovsky. Tom Tugend, in an interview with Felder published in The Times of Israel on July 30 th 2017, asks: “Does towering talent exculpate a composer, or any artist, for a racist or anti-Semitic remark, even at a time and place where such comments were commonplace?” Felder responded: “This is a very complicated matter...Tchaikovsky was a man of the 19th century, when the intelligentsia in Russia and European countries was anti-Semitic almost by reflex.” Felder noted that the Jewish George Gershwin called his opera “Blue Moon” his “nigger opera.” Does that make him a racist? Tugend points out that when Al Jolson in the 1920s and ‘30s performed in blackface, it wasn’t considered offensive as it later became. Felder said: “We can’t correct or apologize for history.” He added that Tchaikovsky should be judged by his actions not his words, concerning which he cites many pro-Jewish examples.

Everyone has to decide for himself how to solve these moral dilemmas. As for me, every Shabbat, as the spirit moves me, I find myself wanting to throw in some Carlebach melodies here and there. I sometimes almost unknowingly find myself humming music of Wagner...There is no disputing their power, only their association...

For a Good Time …

If you had asked me some years ago about going to synagogue for morning prayers, the honest answer would have been that I never gave it a thought. At some point, I started going for the yahrzeits [anniversary of the death] of my mother and father, and if my wife or a friend needed a minyan to say the Mourner's Kaddish. It can be difficult getting enough people for a minyan. When our congregation was still on Kenwood Boulevard, Ann and I decided to help make an evening minyan once a week, which we did for a while.

In recent years, I found myself going more frequently, usually in the morning, even before becoming president, and will continue to do so after.

If you come for morning minyan, you will find many of the regulars, and maybe some people who come irregularly, and some folks who come rarely. The regulars include both men and women, as is appropriate. It is a congenial, perhaps less formal atmosphere, praying together in the more intimate space of our chapel. With a group of regular attendees, you may worry that you would feel like an outsider, but you should not. I can guarantee that you will be welcomed. For me, it was a little daunting keeping up at first. But just like Shabbat morning, after you come a few times, you get into the swing of things and it gets more comfortable. And just like on Shabbat, anyone is happy to help you find where we are in the siddur. On Monday and Thursday, if we have a minyan, the Hazzan reads Torah, and you have a good chance to receive an honor if you want one. It's a warm and meaningful start to the day.

Once we are finished, you may want to join the group at Panera Bread on Central Avenue.

There was actually an article about this daily meeting in the religion section of the Toledo Blade in 2011, with a nice picture of Rabbi Saks, some of the attendees, and a brief story which included a mention of our “new cantor, Ivor Lichterman”. You can still find this article by searching on the Blade’s website. Once at Panera, the minyan transforms to a havurah. We talk about everything and anything, and sometimes try to solve the world’s problems. The conversations around the table often overlap, ebbing and flowing and going off in all sorts of directions. Most days there is the quiz, thoughtfully provided by Butch Stein. The topics are varied, to put it mildly, ranging from silly to serious, literary to linguistic, the arts to the arcane, historical to hysterical. Usually someone will have an answer, but if no one else does, we can turn to one of the regulars, Alice Applebaum, who has an encyclopedic knowledge that is remarkable.

I really need to mention the “3 musketeers” of the Congregation B’nai Israel minyan. First and foremost, there is Howard Rosenbaum. He is our minyan leader. He is there morning and evening, plus Shabbat morning, starting the worship at 9:30. If Howard can’t be there, it is likely that the second musketeer, David Weinberg will lead the service. The third musketeer to lead the service is David Friedes. If David is there on Shabbat, as he typically is, you are likely to find him leading our Mincha service following lunch. And when our Hazzan is away, these three are among those who step up so we can continue to have all our regular worship services without interruption.

So, for a good time, come be part of the minyan, whether for morning, evening, or Mincha on Shabbat. You will be helping others who need a minyan to say the Mourner's Kaddish, you will be helping your congregation, and you will be enriching yourself. And if you come for coffee and join the conversation, who knows, you might even help solve the world’s problems!

FOUR DIFFERENT QUESTIONS Q. 1. What is Passover University?

A. Passover University is a special program of Congregation B'nai Israel in conjunction with The David S. Stone Religious School. It is open to the community and designed to help everyone prepare for Passover.

Q. 2. Who should go to Passover University?

A. Passover University is for everyone - whether you are planning your first Seder or whether you are alumni of previous Seders. There will be informative workshops for everyone regardless of age and experience.

Q. 3. Why should I attend?

A.. You should attend because this will be an informative and exciting workshop that will enhance your Passover experience. Where else could you observe a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef, experience the unique world famous Jewpardy game, learn creative techniques for making “Passadecha” brown bag lunches for work and school? It will be a challenge to choose among the eight exciting classes our learned faculty will present.

Q. 4. Why do I need to make reservations?

A. You need to make a reservation because space is limited in each session. There is no charge for this program. Each household that pre-registers will receive a complementary celebratory Passover-in-a-Bag containing CD of Passover melodies, holiday craft activities, and your very own “prep-your-house-kit” and our 2018 CBI recipe book. Trust us; this bag is worth its weight in GOLD!

STEPHAN LUBLIN

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Stephan Lublin spent several years touring the United States as the drummer of We Are The Fury. While on tour, he ate his way from city to city, sampling everything that was offered. Eventually, Stephan's love for food fully took over and he left the USA for France to attend the legendary Le Cordon Bleu, where he graduated with honors in both cuisine and pâtisserie.

Stephan furthered his knowledge by studying wine and spirits at both Le Cordon Bleu Paris and the Wine And Spirits Education Trust based in London, England. With his skills he cooked for the attachés of the American Embassy in Paris for three years before returning to The United States to play rock 'n roll music in the band, Jeremy And The Harlequins, and to cater private events in New York City.

We have numerous important activities happening in February at David S. Stone Religious School. Our third Parenting workshop is coming on February 4, facilitated by Rabbi Jason Miller. I hope that all of our parents will be able to attend. This is promised to be an informative and helpful workshop for all who attend. While your students are busy in their classrooms, we hope you will join us in the social hall for this important session.

Sunday, February 11 is our 9th annual Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month program which will engage all area religious school students grades k-high school and their parents in continuation with last year’s mental health issues. All families are strongly encouraged to attend this program aimed on understanding and managing anxiety in children and adults.

Eric Chase, local media personality and mental health advocate, will talk to students in 5th grade and older about the stigma of mental illness and coping mechanisms. Renee Stack, school counselor for Sylvania Schools, will teach children k-4th about coping skills.

We will meet at Shomer Emunim at 9:30 on February 11th, for coffee, juice, and bagels, and meet and greet with our speakers prior to the program at 10:00.

Wednesday, February 28 is our Purim dinner, celebration and megillah reading. The festive Persian/Israeli themed dinner will be at 5:45, following religious school. We will then have a family friendly program including a costume parade with prizes, skits, songs and more. Traditional megillah reading will begin at 7:30 p.m.. We hope to see everyone there!

Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo’s 9th Annual

Jewish Disability Awareness Month Program Sunday, February 11 at Temple Shomer Emunim 9:30 a.m. Coffee, bagels and program preview 10:00 a.m. Program begins

Our Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month (JDAIM) program will dive deeper into the subject of anxiety. Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo has partnered with Temple Shomer Emunim, Congregation B’nai Israel, and Congregation Etz Chayim to offer the community a new perspective on understanding and managing anxiety in children and

adults.

The 9th annual JDAIM program will engage religious school students from kindergarten to high school grades and their parents in continuation with last year’s mental health theme. Each year, the JDAIM program increases awareness and provides education about welcoming and including people with disabilities.

Programs are tailored to the children in all grades and adults are strongly encouraged to attend.

Renee Stack, school counselor for Sylvania Schools, will teach students in kindergarten through fourth grade about coping skills. Eric Chase, local media personality and mental health advocate, will talk to students in fifth grade and up about the stigma of mental illness and coping mechanisms he has found helpful.

Community members are invited to a program preview with the speakers from 9:30-10 a.m. where coffee and bagels will be served as well as either session.

Members of this year’s planning committee include Kim Brody, Wendy Payne, Phyllis Wittenberg, Debbie Spangenthal, Cami Golding, Jill Kripke, Mushka Matusof, and Nancy Newbury.

Renee N. Stack, M.S.

Renee Stack is in her eighth year as a school counselor. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Capital University in Columbus and her Masters of Science in Applied Educational Psychology from Northeastern University in Boston. Stack grew up in Sylvania and went to Northview High School.

After completing graduate school, she and her husband moved back to Sylvania to begin their careers and family. Stack is a mother of three kids, enjoys playing volleyball and squash, and spends her free time crafting and home designing. As a school counselor, Stack focuses on helping kids develop the social, emotional, behavioral, and academic skills students need to achieve life-long success. Currently, she is working on expanding her support for students through a social-emotional tutoring program called Stackable SEL, LLC.

Eric Chase

Some attributes that may come to mind when you think of Eric Chase are: a ball of energy, very passionate, and zeal for life. He is a radio head of 20 years, huge dog lover, and gigantic Batman and Transformers fan. He is larger than life, and has spent his time avoiding a suit and tie so that he can do what he loves. The mantra, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life,” really fits Eric and his life journey. Although he is a Pennsylvania native, after bouncing around for a little while, Eric decided to make Toledo, OH, his home. Opportunities seemingly fall into his lap here and the people are always so warm and open towards him.

He most recently hosted a morning talk radio show called, The Morning Rush on Kiss FM, a top 40 station with no music during his segment; a real gutsy thing, but it worked. Many people listened in and called each morning, and the show became a therapy of sorts for the fans. Eric hopes to take the same light hearted listening ear he gained as a radio host and transfer that into using animal therapy to help people living with mental illness. He is already in process of talking with a local healthcare provider to create such a program. In 2005 Eric was diagnosed with Bipolar 2, depression, and anxiety; after learning more about his condition, he began to realize how much his dogs helped him cope with symptoms. He knows firsthand about the power of connecting with animals, and is also a huge animal rights advocate.
