WHAT’S WITH ALL THE CANDLES?

When our Christian friends, in the midst of their frantic Christmas prep, ask us Jews what we’re doing for Chanukkah, they often get a reply that goes something like this, “Oh we don’t make such a big deal, we just light a few candles...”

This response, I would suggest, trivializes the candles’ significance. I admit that Hanukkah originally was not “such a big deal”. The Talmud says little about it. Its profile has increased since the creation of modern Israel which many regard as embodying the spirit of the valiant Maccabees. No doubt the juxtaposition of Christmas has also benefitted Hanukkah greatly in contemporary culture.

Yes we Jews do light a lot of candles:  besides Hanukkah, we light at the onset of Shabbat and at its conclusion with Havdallah  holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Pesach, Shavuot, Sukkot and their conclusion  yahrzeit, yizkor, shiva and Yom Hashoah  some light candles at weddings  we even have a ner tamid – a perpetual light that glows 24/7 in every synagogue. Ours at CBI is a particularly unique one - a gas light with real flames.

So what’s with all the candles? Following ar e a few r easons:

I suggest that in Judaism the lighting of candles represents not only the spreading of God’s light, but also the spreading of our own light as a reflection of the Divine. Those who have been to Israel may have visited the beautiful menorah, Israel’s official emblem, opposite the Knesset, Israel’s parliament in Jerusalem (great photo op), symbol of this Judaic concept.

We live in a world that, as we approach yet another secular year, is shrouded in darkness. But the candle flame leaps upward and spreads light, like our human souls yearning for something more than our daily mundane existence. By the way we live we could reflect Divine light, as God created light out of chaos (tohu – Hebrew) in the universe (Genesis 1: 2). And the candles of mourning reflect our faith that through our own efforts, we can perpetuate the legacy of our loved ones, thereby keeping their memory alive.

In the Midrash Rabbi Hanina states (Bamidbar Rabba), “The eyes are composed of white and dark components, but one can only see through the dark part.” No surprise then that Hanukkah occurs closest to the solstice, the darkest time of year in this part of the world, when the nights are longest and the days shortest.

So when your Christian friends (or of any other religion) ask how you are celebrating Hanukkah and you respond that you are just lighting a few candles, you can also add, “now let me tell you all about it ...!”

Put on Your Yarmulke, Here Comes Hanukkah! … Adam Sandler

It seems like just a few short weeks ago I was writing a column about Hanukkah, but it has already been a year! This minor holiday has taken on great importance for Jews in many countries, including ours. For some, it is our solution when the kids ask why they can’t have Christmas and get presents. That is too bad as it distracts from what our celebration is all about. Here is what one website has to say, “It is bitterly ironic that this holiday, which has its roots in a revolution against assimilation and the suppression of Jewish religion, has become the most assimilated, secular holiday on our calendar.” I suppose many Christians may have similar feelings about the commercialization of their celebration.

With grandchildren, I’m wondering how to make a connection, beyond presents, gelt and food. So I turned to the internet. First stop was a favorite source of information, “Judaism 101” [www.jewfaq.org], which I have mentioned before. There, in a nutshell, is all one might want to know about the holiday, it’s origins, history, how we celebrate, a recipe for potato latkes, how to play dreidel, Hanukkah music and more.

I started with music, looking for songs that might bring a more modern twist that would interest the grandkids. Most of us know Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song”, which is mostly a listing of famous people who are Jewish. There are several editions of this. It’s still fun to listen to, though not very meaningful.

But I realized it is somewhat dated and many of the names, though famous to adults, might not be so well known to the children. So, scratch that off the list of possibilities to bridge across not just one, but two generations. But, as often happens when using the internet, one thing leads to another, and I found a lot of music to consider. I did find many music videos that were Hanukkah-themed parodies of popular songs. This certainly follows the idea that Hanukkah is supposed to be fun. I found several such parodies, all of which teach something about the holiday. You can find these easily on YouTube. Here are some I found interesting.

The Maccabeats are an a cappella group from Yeshiva University that records parodies of contemporary hits using Jewish-themed lyrics. Their first big hit was "Candlelight", a Hanukkah parody of Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" music video. I have to admit that I only know this by finding it on line. When I listened to the video, I did recognize the song, and I know at least some of the grandkids know it. The Maccabeats’ version, “Candlelight”, it great, and definitely one to listen to with the kids. I may even become a cool grandpa. The Maccabeats have many videos, the music is good, the lyrics are clever, and the production quality and performances are outstanding. My favorite would likely not get much traction with the little kids. It is based on “Hamilton”, the musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Even if, like me, you have not seen the show, you must have seen some clips of it. The Maccabeats’ version of Hamilton is “Hasmonian”, and I recommend it highly.

Another one, “Latke Recipe” is a takeoff on “Shut Up And Dance" originally performed by a group called Walk the Moon. I have no prior knowledge of this song or the performers, but maybe the kids do, and so this could be a good one to watch before making latkes with the kids. So there is one for Grandma. I also thought that the kids might like a parody of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful”, another song I did not know. A group called Jew Direction parodied this as "Chanukah Makes You Jewtiful". It is pretty good, and worth trying on the kids. And especially for the granddaughters, I suggest “Shalom”, a send-up of Adele’s “Hello”. Comparing the original and the parody is hilarious, though it got pretty silly by the end. The winner for cuteness goes to “Chanukah Style - A Gangnam Style Parody” performed by the kids at The Shul of Bal Harbour.

This summer, a Peace Pole was installed on the Toledo Jewish Community Campus. The Peace Pole is a monument that displays the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in Arabic, English, French, Hebrew, Hindi, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish. Eight representatives from northwest Ohio Chinese, French, Hindu, Hispanic, Jewish, Muslim, and Russian communities who each speak one of the languages on the Peace Pole will light a candle in a unity circle and recite “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in their respective language. Sunday School children will sing a song in Hebrew and English about peace.

Refreshments will include homemade latkes (potato pancakes) and applesauce, as well as desserts.

We have an exciting month planned in December. On Sunday, December 10, seventh grade and older will have a Hanukkah video call with their twin school 8th grade class in “Second Aliyah” Acre Israel. The debut of a new CBI program designed for parents of school age children through college age. The Challenges of Jewish Parenting in a Small Jewish Community is kicking off on December 17 at 10:30 a.m. facilitated by J ason C. Levine, PhD. J ason is Assistant Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, Psychology training clinic director at The University of Toledo. Jason also participated on a panel for our Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion program last year. Please mark your calendars for December 17 during Religious School. We will also have a sufganiyot Hanukkah celebration prior to the parent workshop at 10:00 a.m..

What’s Derech Eretz? The Sunday’s “Mensch” class is doing what is right! They have given out Moral Compass Awards to recognize others who live by Jewish Values. To help remember their important lessons, students are creating their own “My Jewish Values” booklets. Lively discussions and lots of fun are forecast every week!

B’nai’s Wonderful Wednesday Hebrew group has focused on vowels and blending sounds as they review and practice Hebrew letters, words, and sentences. Ask about “e beans” and “ay beans.” They would love to tell you!

Confidence is growing as they battle to take turns and show what they can do. As the group begins to learn what bits and pieces mean, screams of joy fill the room! Ah, the sounds of success.

HANUKKAH begins Tuesday evening December 12, 2017 First candle – Dec. 12; Eighth candle – Dec. 19

KINDLING THE LIGHTS On Shabbat Hanukkah, the Hanukkah lights are kindled before the Shabbat candles. It is customary to use extra-long Hanukkah candles, since the fulfillment of the mitzvah requires that the Hanukkah lights burn for at least one half hour after dark.

The candles in your Menorah should be placed in a straight row, since no day of Hanukkah is superior to another. Only the Shammes, used to kindle the others, should stand higher than the others or separate.

The Hanukkah lights should be kindled after dark (except on Friday night).

This is the proper way to kindle the lights: On the first night place one candle in the Menorah at the extreme right. On the other seven nights, place the candles from right to left, adding one each night.

Light the Shammes. With it light the candle on the left first.

Before lighting the candles, each night two brachot (blessings) are recited, except for the first night when these three brachot are recited.

On all nights light the Shammes and recite:

Barukh attah adonai, eloheinu melekh ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik neyr shel hanukkah.

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by Thy commandments, and commanded us to kindle the lights of Hanukkah.

Barukh attah adonai, eloheinu melekh ha-olam, sheh-asah nissim la-avoteinu ba-yamim haheim ba-z’man ha-zeh.

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has performed miracles for our fathers in days of old, at this season.

The following blessing is added and recited on the first evening only:

Barukh attah adonai, eloheinu melekh ha-olam, she-he-che-yanu, v’ki-y’-manu, v’hi-gi-anu, la-z’ man ha-zeh.

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has kept us in life, and sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season.

Your Generosity Helps Many in Need Jewish Family Service thanks B’nai Israel congregants for generously participating in this year’s High Holiday Paper Products Drive. Many, many bags of paper products and personal care items were donated. Your generous contributions will serve the needs of our community neighbors for quite some time. JFS gives food, fresh produce, paper goods, and personal care items to individuals who struggle financially and helps them discover other resources to address on-going needs.

Your support is vital to the operation of the food pantry and greatly appreciated!

Thank you to everyone who made the paper products drive possible, including Nate Segall who, once again, donated a truck trailer in which to store and transport donations from The Temple to JFS. Thanks also to Larry Johnson who delivered donations from CBI to JFS.

We met, we planned, we made tons of phone calls. We organized, we schlepped and we schlepped and schlepped some more.

The rummage sale brought out many volunteers from both sisterhoods! Unpacking together, folding together, hanging together, and lunching together, the rummage sale set up with considerable ease. Special thanks to our gents and to our USYers who were of great assistance. However, we felt that the Torah portion Noah and the flood had returned, as Sunday afternoon was a biblical downpour. Again to all, our members who contributed their rummage, and most of all, to our volunteers, you are, and will always be the very best. Todah Rabah.
