NOTES FROM THE CANTOR

Since then, my parents, my brother who emigrated ten years after me, and I, have always been torn between priorities, knowing that we would never have enough opportunities to visit. Our father passed away ten years after I emigrated. I only saw him a few times in those ten years. The cost and time of travel to South Africa make frequent trips prohibitive, and it is for mostly these same reasons that only one of our three children has had the opportunity to visit there, despite Mom’s years flying by.

I will return with lots of stories to share about Mom and the trip. I will leave her with a heavy heart to return to Toledo erev Hanukkah, the height of summer in South Africa. Cape Town, being the beautiful coastal city she is, with glorious summer weather and some of the world’s best beaches, is swarming like our west coast’s San Diego in the summer with visitors from all over the world.

My brother is planning to visit Mom in May, so between us we see her every six months. Meantime, the thought that Hanukkah is the season of light and warmth, will remind me of the glow on her face from last year’s CBI trip, as we celebrated Shabbat together with her.

Hanukkah marks our People’s perpetual yearning and long struggle for religious and national freedom, so relevant for the times in which we now live. To me it is also a reminder that Mom, like Dad, endured incarceration in the Warsaw Ghetto and Concentration Camps during the hell that was the Shoah. Yet, they emerged to live the most positive lives imaginable, to this day, Mom’s 92nd year, and they raised sons who follow their ways even to the shul bimah and pulpit, to keep the melody and miracle of their lives, the melody and miracle of Judaism, alive.

May the warm holiday glow of Hanukkah fill your homes, your hearts, your families and friends. See you at CBI’s Hanukkah celebration December 17th at 5:45pm and on Shabbat Hanukkah December 20th for a special musical festival.

Kibbud Av Va’eym – Honoring Parents

In the Ten Commandments, which occur twice in the Torah, the first four commandments govern our relationship with God. The fifth commandment – to honor our father and mother, is the first commandment governing interpersonal relationships. This says much about its importance in the Torah, as does its placement even before murder, theft etc.

By the time you read this article, I will most likely be, if not in the midst of flying for three days, some 8,500 miles away from Toledo, in distant Cape Town at the foot of the African continent, in South Africa visiting my dear mother, Miriam. She turned 92 this past Rosh Hashana. As much as my brother (who is Hazzan in Denver, CO) and I wanted to be with her on yet another of her milestone birthdays, we had to console ourselves in the thought that we were with her in spirit, a poor, but realistic plan B. Duty, after all, had called, and we were to be found at our respective bimah pulpits leading our congregations in prayer…

This is my first opportunity to visit her in a year, and even now I am torn over the various special Shabbats and other essential events at CBI that I am missing. But I will return in time for our Hanukkah celebration.

Some of you may recall that a year ago I led an amazing congregational tour of Jewish South Africa. We spent a few days in Cape Town where our group had the opportunity to spend Shabbat with Mom. The image is still vivid in my mind of her singing at the top of her lungs and ecstatically dancing a horah in high heels around the room with our group, during our wonderful Friday night Shabbat dinner at the hotel.

When I left South Africa for the USA over thirty years ago, my parents (my father Jakub was alive and well then) gave me their blessing, knowing full well deep down that there was a good chance I would never return to live there again, only to visit, and even that would be infrequent, or never frequent enough. After I wish you all a wonderful 2015! all, how often is often enough to visit parents in person? Can you put an amount on it? Is every day enough? Without them many of Hazzan Ivor Lichterman us would not be what we are today.

South Africa was then in the midst of political upheaval that eventually resulted in a democratically elected black majority government. My parents and I determined it was preferable to (Synagogue Organized Afternoon Program) stay in the USA. Of course, meeting Jan three years later helped We will be on hiatus from December 10th cement my decision to apply for US citizenship and never return through December 31, 2014. to live there again.

After only a couple of years into my rabbinate I was selected to be part of the STAR Foundation’s Peer (Professional Education I hope you will join me in looking in the mirror a little more. RABBI JASON MILLER Basically, I spent a lot of time “looking in the mirror” and trying to become a better leader and rabbi.

We can all benefit from looking in the mirror to try to see what others see in us. In December, we will read Parshat Vayishlach and the story of Jacob wrestling with the angel. This happened to be the Torah portion of my senior sermon in rabbinical school when friends, family, and colleagues come to the Jewish Theological Seminary to hear me deliver a sermon that I had spent months preparing. I explained that I have always understood Jacob to be wrestling with himself performing an intense self introspection. This is how we might feel when we

SHABBAT LUCK On November 7th, 52 people of all ages enjoyed a beautiful Shabbat experience. Rabbi Alan Mayor Sokobin Th.D., D.D., J.D., served as rabbi at The Temple, Congregation Shomer Emunim. Following his “retirement,” he graduated from the University of Toledo College of Law, and serves on the Law faculty. He was also the Jewish Chautauqua Society Associate Professor of History. He has authored many scholarly articles and served on several national boards and commissions.

A familiar presence at B’nai Israel, Rabbi Sokobin is a frequent and popular contributor to the programs and services at B’nai Israel.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Mark & Terri Brunswick Terri and Mark have three children, Melissa, Randy and Eric and three grandchildren, Brandon, Jackson and Asher. Hanukkah is their favorite holiday when the family spends time together.

The Brunswicks consider themselves sports enthusiasts and love the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers.

We welcome Terri and Mark back to CBI. Doris Davis Doris has a married son, daughter and five grandchildren. Her favorite holiday is Hanukkah because it is such a happy time. In her free time she enjoys oil and water painting. We welcome Doris as an Associate Member.

Jason Ellick Jason moved here from Cincinnati, Ohio, to continue his career as an industrial engineer where he is the safety director for repairing trains (BIG trains). His favorite holiday is Sukkot because he considers it to be a warming experience sitting with friends in the Sukkah in the evening enjoying wine.

Lyn Wancket & David Johnson Lyn and David moved from Columbus, Ohio, with their two cats, Hank and Sami. Lyn loves Passover and the level of tradition associated with the holiday, while David prefers Shabbat as it provides time to wind down from a hectic week. Lyn is into knitting and crocheting while David enjoys computer activities.

Ann & Hy Kisin Ann and Hy love spending Hanukkah with their three grandchildren Maddie, Josh and Ellie and their parents while enjoying great food with great kids. They are also excited to have another granddaughter on the way. Hy is a psychologist with the Paramount

system. Ann is a wine wholesaler and some of their most memorable road trips are to Kentucky bourbon country which they highly recommend for a quick getaway.

Michael & Gabi Mallin Moving from Cleveland, Michael is a PhD who doesn’t help people in the traditional sense, but is on staff at the University of Toledo. Gabi is a Judaic artist specializing in 3-D art and ketubot. They are the proud parents of three daughters: Samantha, Baylee and Danielle. The girls all love Hanukkah and Gabi loves their Thanksgiving (Friday) Shabbat as it has become a time for both sides of the family to get together to celebrate Thanksgiving. This family of runners just participated in the Girls on the Run 5K which teaches girls in grades 3-5 about self-esteem.

Ellie Niejadlik Ellie and her husband, Bill, are the proud parents of two children, Matt and Wendy, and have one grandchild, Howard. Ellie’s favorite holiday is Passover because she, her mother, and sister, both of blessed memory, would prepare for the Seder together. As former members of CBI, both Matt and Wendy are CBI confirmands. Ellie and Bill are glad to be back as part of our family.

Rachel Noleff We are so pleased that Rachel will be chanting Haftarah at the New Member Shabbat.

Her favorite holidays are Sukkot and Shavuot because of giving/part of community/sharing and kindness.

She is the Lead Perinatal Worker at Neighborhood Health Association which reduces infant mortality among low income families in Ohio. Rachel is currently the USY co-advisor.

Abby & Kyle Schwartz When Abby and Kyle were growing up, their families shared many Passovers, with all parents asking when they would be getting married! As a result, Passover seders are a mo ng their m e mor abl e experiences.

They are the proud parents of Abygail and Logan and, as a family, enjoy medieval recreation, arts and crafts, eating and nature walks.

Kim Strole As a convert in 2008, Kim finds Yom Kippur to be moving, a time for renewal and provides a total connection to and forgiveness from God. Kim and her husband, Patrick, are the proud parents of Hannah and Chayah. Kim is a Special Needs teacher at Grove Patterson Academy and Patrick is the maintenance manager at the Toledo Zoo. They love gardening. We welcome Kim and her family as Associate Members of CBI. Ellen Wilensky Ellen is proud of her twin sons, Dylan and Harris who absolutely love Hanukkah! Her favorite holiday is Rosh Hashanah as it is the start of a new year. Ellen is in the process of obtaining a license for her dog to become a therapy dog.

Rick & Nancy Zerner Native Toledoans, the Zerners, recently joined B’nai Israel as a tribute to Nancy’s family who had long been CBI members.

They have two children, Lauren and Rob and two grandchildren, Alexandra and Elizabeth. Their most memorable family experience was a family mission to Israel about 18 years ago.

They love travelling especially to New York to visit their grandchildren and to San Francisco to visit Rob. Both Nancy and Rick enjoy cooking.

DAVID S. STONE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Our religious school students have continued with numerous engaging activities over the past couple of months. Students and some parents traveled to The Detroit Holocaust Memorial with our friends from Shomer Emunim and Etz Chayim as an important part of their curriculum pertaining to the Holocaust. I would like to share some thoughts from Paulette Sherline about the trip. “The physical layout was perfect, creating an atmosphere perfect for the challenge at hand.

It was exceptionally relevant, bringing history into the present, and challenging everyone to self reflect their role in today’s world where we are not good at learning from the mistakes of the past.” We will continue with the Holocaust curriculum for the entire student body of all Religious schools by doing a project and participating together in the community Yom HaShoah program in April.

Our students have been working on many tzedekah projects, including baking and selling Hanukkah cookies and donating the proceeds to JFS. They have also been introduced to the B’nai Tzedek fund and learning about how they can make a difference in the lives of many people.

We have all been learning about Israel and the importance of our Partnership with our chaverim in the Western Galilee region. Our eighth through tenth grades continue to Skype with our chaverim in the Western Galilee on a regular basis. The kids discuss everything from current events to what teens do for fun in America and in Israel.

Some of our friends from Israel stayed in the homes of our students, so there is already a personal connection. Other activities we are doing to make the personal connection include our younger classes making videos of our school and how we celebrate holidays here. They also wrote letters to soldiers in Israel thanking them for being true heroes.

We are looking forward to the annual Hanukkah program on December 17th.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Recently, board members Ellen Federman, Fran Weinblatt and I attended a workshop in Cincinnati sponsored by United Synagogue entitled “Relational Judaism” after a book of the same title by Dr. Ron Wolfson. There we heard workshop leaders from Cincinnati Hillel, United Synagogue, Rabbi Wise of Adath Israel and surprisingly Pastor Jenny of Crossroads (Mega) Church.

The leaderships of Sisterhoods, Mens Clubs, Jewish Federations and synagogue boards often bemoan the lack of energetic, committed Jews becoming involved in Jewish organizational activities. However, this is not only a Jewish problem but one faced by other faith-based organizations as well.

Each Jewish organization offered ideas for engaging Jews at different transition points in their lives. Transitions points were post b'nai mitzvah, going off to college, becoming an empty nester, retirement, etc. Each point offered both challenges and opportunities to reconnect with members through development of synagogueinitiated social activities, religious study, outreach to special needs populations involving children, young mothers, elderly and kitchens for the poor. We were told to create smaller groups of members both interested in helping others through service projects coupled with religious study. The people involved in these smaller groups develop closer relationships which may become personal such as families, couples or singles getting together for meals, religious programs and study (think Havurah groups). Of course these newly developed relationships recognized the importance of the role the synagogues play in creating these new friendships.

Congregation Bnai Israel is already doing many positive things to engage our members through welcoming Shabbat services with kiddush luncheons, USY, Kadima programs, stimulating adult education programs, community garden, daily morning minyan, and Shabbat Luck family dinners.

I would especially like to recognize the contributions of our Sisterhood, Men's Club and the newly formed Sisterhood 2.0. We are looking forward to an exciting and stimulating calendar year for 2015. Our congregant's suggestions and ideas are welcomed by me and our board.

Helping to prepare a meal when a member is seriously ill with short term needs or a terminal illness Comforting you when your loved one is acutely ill in the hospital or nursing home Assisting with contacting family and friends Providing support and guidance during and after the funeral and Shiva Ensuring a minyan at the cemetery as well as Shiva House-sitting during the funeral Helping prepare the meal, for the immediate family, following the funeral

Congregation B’nai Israel’s Annual USY High Holy Day food drive was a huge success! Shopping bags were packed with food, paper products, and personal hygiene items, and were delivered to the Jewish Family Service Food Pantry. High Holy Day food drives are the main source of food and other items for the Food Pantry which is open to the general community. Last year, JFS provided food and other necessary items to 468 people.

Thanks to your donations, fewer people in the community will go hungry during these difficult financial times. Your thoughtfulness and generosity convey concern and compassion for which the recipients are truly grateful. THANK YOU and todah rabah!
