From the Rabbi’s Desk In our own age, and for the last several hundred years, learned men and women have argued about the meaning of the Creation story. Are these tales of a seven-day unfolding of the cosmos meant as the Biblical rendition of history, the record of how Creation actually happened? Or are the opening chapters of Beresheet (Genesis) intended to teach something other than history?

The question is of more than merely academic relevance. Several court cases around the United States seek to gain equal time in the classroom to teach "Creationism," the Biblical account of the origin of life and the cosmos. Proponents of Creationism maintain that the narrative in the Bible is divinely inspired in a literal way.

They therefore read of the marvels in the Torah in a fundamentalist light--insisting that to accept the divinity of the Torah means to accept it as a historical record that is literally true. Their approach offers the comfort of certainty, the clarity of simplicity. It also, however, reduces Judaism's most sacred book to the status of an ancient newspaper--relating all the news that's fit to print.

There is another, equally religious way of understanding the Torah and of perceiving its sanctity. Rather than reading the Torah simply as a chronicle of ancient events, a listing of facts (what was created on which day), we can understand the Torah as Judaism's founding statement about the meaning of human, and specifically, Jewish life and community.

While perhaps less successful in compelling acceptance of biblical "facts," the strength of this view is that it does recognize the concerns and priorities of the Torah as primarily religious and spiritual. The Torah doesn't focus on lists of events so much as on what life and history reveal about the Creator of the universe and our brit (covenant) with God. The Torah tells us how to live, not merely how others have lived. No less an authority than Rashi, (11th Century France), the preeminent medieval commentator on the Bible and the Talmud, took such a stand on the story of Creation. Rashi insists that the only way to understand biblical Creation is midrashically (according to rabbinic interpretation). A superficial, historical reading of Creation would miss the point of the story. Such a literal approach to the Biblical tale is, in Rashi's words, "astonishing." Instead, he encourages us to admit that "Scripture does not teach us everything about the order of the earlier or the later acts of Creation."

The narrator of the Torah is not interested in recounting facts. What captures the Torah's attention, and what remains significant, is not facts in themselves, but what those facts mean for our lives and our communities.

To paraphrase Albert Einstein, imagination is more important than knowledge. Imagination, the ability to connect facts into meaningful patterns, the willingness to transform an "is" into an "ought," has characterized our traditions at their best. Jewish traditions, starting with the Creation story, provide a way of reading the world not simply as a random collection of phenomena, but as a coherent message of morality, holiness and hope. Out of that vision of meaning and coherence, a society committed to establishing God's sovereignty, one which can implement God's love, becomes possible. The task awaits; the reading is possible.

MUSICAL ANCHORS As society evolves and times change, political and technological developments can wreak havoc on, amongst other things, the world of music. Consider the following 3 examples:1) When the iPod was invented a decade ago, there were 7500 music stores in the USA employing 80,000 people. Today there are 2500 such stores employing 20,000, a 2/3 decline in stores and ¾ decline in workforce in a mere 10 years.

2) On September 30th 2012 the Jewish Art and History Museum of Paris held a historic concert by the El Gusto orchestra who performed non-stop for 2 ½ hours to a packed audience of 900. Their genre of music, known as chaabi, is the Algerian version of Arab music, a mix of Andalusian and Berber sounds with religious chants which was lost after Algeria became independent in 1962. The concert was in celebration of the opening of the museum’s new exhibit “The Jews of Algeria.”

After Algerian independence in 1962 the musicians who played in the flourishing bars and cafes of Algier’s old Casbah, dispersed – the Muslims relocated by the government to new housing developments on the city’s outskirts, the Jews mostly to France. Elaine Sciolino, writing in the New York Times of October 12th 2012, states that the creation of the orchestra has led to a rediscovery of their music and revived friendships that cross religious, ethnic and class barriers.

Nine years ago a 22 year old Algerian living in Ireland wandered into a shop in the Casbah where she noticed old faded photos of musicians hanging from a mirror. For a few hours the shopkeeper passionately shared the story of this famous but faded chaabi music conservatory. She decided to bring the musicians back together and create a documentary film. It took years but she located more than two dozen, some in their 90s, in Algeria and France. The 1st reunion concert after 45 years took place in Marseille, France in 2007, to a sellout crowd followed by concerts in Paris, Berlin, London, Geneva and Brussels. The film, called “El Gusto” was released in January 2012 and the orchestra is negotiating to play in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

There are great challenges ahead such as dwindling musicians - several have died since the orchestra was formed, and there still has not been a concert in Algeria, because the Jews who make up a small but crucial part of the orchestra, are afraid to return.

3) Andy Williams, one of the greatest crooners of all time, died on September 25th at the age of 84. His silky style and voice were unique. His recordings of Speak Sofly Love - the theme from Godfather, and Moon River amongst many other hits and love songs, are memorable and I derived much inspiration as a singer from his ability to seamlessly blend the lower baritone range with the higher tenor notes. He was able to preserve his voice in remarkably good shape and perform till the end.

His Andy Williams TV Show ran successfully on NBC from 1962 – 1971, winning 3 Emmy Awards despite the coinciding social and cultural upheavals of the 60’s with their own new musical styles. He had 18 gold and 3 platinum albums but his 1957 recording of “Butterfly” was his only No. 1 hit, in an uncharacteristic imitation of Elvis.

Although there will always be fans of the great crooners like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Nat King Cole and others, and even today performers like Michael Feinstein, Tony Bennet, Michael Buble and Harry Connick do much to keep this genre alive, the passing of Andy Williams is the end of a great chapter in the history of easy listening music.

Whether the invention of the iPod, Algerian independence or the passing of Andy Williams, the passage of time brings great changes to the world of music, as it does to all of us. Yet music can provide an anchor in this sea of change, and ironically new technologies such as the iPod have helped us hold on to our musical anchors.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Religious School is moving along smoothly with our exciting schedule. Our students are having a great time learning as we transition to our new cohesive curriculum. The younger students are enjoying our library and the music program as they sing with Nick Thanasiu and Noah Hupp. Thank you to all who donated gently used Jewish books for our students to use and check out to read at home. We appreciate all of the donations.

The confirmation students will continue their joint classes with our friends from Shomer Emunim studying comparative religions and hearing special guest speakers. The 7th graders are finishing their Holocaust book club with students from Shomer Emunim. We are looking forward to the Community Book fair, as well as Global Learning Day. Dear Congregants, When Edward Cohen passed away in July, we lost not only a character and a fixture at Shabbat services, but a soul who cared for children, cared for people, and cared for B'nai Israel. B'nai Israel was a second home for him. He had his favorite chair, his favorite people, and always a friendly, although sometimes inappropriate, comment for the unsuspecting. The mention of Eddie’s name is accompanied by laughs and fond memories of a beloved, often-cantankerous, but mostly kind-hearted fixture of B'nai Israel.

He really surprised us after he passed away. Unknown to most of the congregation, Eddie had purchased a life insurance policy that listed Congregation B'nai Israel as the beneficiary.

This small gesture on his part is a huge benefit to B'nai Israel. Every gift, no matter how small, makes a difference for us and our ability to keep our kehilla the vibrant community that we have become.

Way to go, Eddie!
