Notes from the Hazzan

A Formula for Life

For the past several months, I have been unable to attend our daily minyan, except on rare occasions, due to ongoing medical issues. I miss the minyan greatly. I consider it a life’s blood of our congregation, CBI’s daily minyan being the only daily services available for miles around. I take pride in the fact that lately our minyan has undergone somewhat of a revival, seldom lacking a quorum of at least ten, whether in person on Monday and Thursday mornings, or otherwise on Zoom.

The preferred mode of praying in our tradition is with a minyan, the advantages of which are selfevident. When praying in private we must omit certain crucial prayers like Barchu, the Kedusha in the Amidah, Kaddish etc. Praying with a minyan provides an ambience of community sharing that can be a powerful experience. Just ask those who attend regularly.

On the other hand, being confined to davening and praying at home in private, has also afforded me an opportunity for a rather different and more immersive prayer reflection. Without external stimuli that the group minyan provides, I find myself meditating and focusing on prayers I otherwise would have previously overlooked or simply skimmed over.

One such prayer is recited while putting on tefilin in the morning. So rare is it, that it has been omitted from the Conservative prayer book. It was taught to me by my late father when I was 12 and first learning to lay tefilin and associated prayers. Having learnt it by heart as a young lad, it has remained ingrained into my psyche ever since. I feel its content bears sharing and highlighting, and davening at home gave me a refreshed approach to this otherwise obscure prayer.

The prayer contains six references to human traits attributed to God. We pray for God to share these as blessings upon us as well. They are, in sequence -

– chochmah, binah, chesed, gevurah, tov, potech et yadecha , translated as - wisdom, understanding, kindness, bravery, goodness, an open hand. Following is my own free translation of the full prayer, based on the Artscroll Siddur (p9):

From Your wisdom , O supreme God, may You imbue me; From Your understanding make me understand; O share Your kindness abundantly with me; With Your bravery may You defeat my enemies and those who rise against me; O pour out Your goodly oil upon the seven arms of the menorah, so that Your goodness will influence humanity for good; influence

Open Your hand and satisfy the needs of every living being.

(This last line is a quote from Psalm 145:16 – the Ashrei) from Psalm 145:16 – the Ashrei)

I believe this much overlooked paragraph is an excellent Judaic formula for living our lives. It bears contemplation and application, as we approach these upcoming High Holidays.

May we all be blessed with these six attributes and thereby enjoy a shana tova, a wonderful new year!

Beware the Ninth of Av … and Amateur Historians

Last month we observed Tisha B’av, the end of three weeks of mourning for the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. The Book of Lamentations emphasizes that in both cases the city had sinned and so brought destruction on itself. Regarding the Second Temple, we usually tell a very simple story that a Jewish rebellion against Roman tyranny was put down by massive military force and ended with the razing of the entire structure. Like all things historical, the story is far more complex, and even more depressing.

Judea and Galilea rose up against Roman tyranny in 68 CE. Having momentarily expelled (read: massacred) the occupiers, the various Jewish sects immediately set on one another. The provisional government was falsely accused of collaborating with Rome and was overthrown by Zealots irreconcilably opposed to any government other than that of G-d. Twelve thousand Jews were murdered by their fellows. As the Roman army sent to put down the rebellion drew near, a second army of Zealots retreated into the city and promptly set out to overthrow the first. This civil war only ended when the Roman siege closed around the walls of Jerusalem … at which point the Zealots burned the city’s food supply to end any hope of reconciliation with Rome. When the Romans broke through seven months later, a half million starving Jews were killed or enslaved, and Temple Mount was leveled.

It is likely, but not certain that the Roman Empire, at the peak of its power, would have prevailed in any case. What is certain is that the Jews made things much worse for themselves. The parallels to the challenges Jews, and indeed all people face in Israel, America and around the world are striking. As we approach the Days of Awe and Yom Kippur, we ponder how we can make ourselves better people and the world a better place. We might well consider what the disaster of Ninth of Av teaches about the importance of compromise, unity and compassion, as well as the dangers of fanaticism and misinformation.

On a brighter note, despite the horrors and challenges of the past year, Israel and the Jews are still here, and we are here to stay. With that, Helen and I would like to wish the entire CBI family a safe, healthy and prosperous new year. L’shanah Tova!

A Special Mazal Tov to...

Devorah Shulamit

Congregation B’nai Israel is proud to congratulate Devorah Shulamit on chairing the 35th Annual Interfaith Blood Drive (the oldest ongoing Interfaith blood drive in the nation and beyond) and Gala which she has chaired since its inception. The event took place on June 29th and 30th at Grace Lutheran Church. Through her dedication and hard work fifty-five units of blood were donated this year. Each unit can save the lives of three people.

Having needed blood at one point in her life she waited two weeks until blood could be found due to a shortage at that time. She realized the importance of helping so that others do not have to deal with the same situation.

The blood drive is organized each year by Devorah and a team of volunteers; no one is paid except the workers from Red Cross. Although there used to be a two-day drive (which many Jewish people preferred), Red Cross will no longer have a drive on a Sunday.

On Sunday, June 30th, the Gala was held. Devorah was instrumental in soliciting food from a wide variety of food vendors and congregations, all of whom donated their food so that dinner could be served to one hundred attendees at no cost. There were foods from six different ethnicities. Attendees shared tables with those of other religious groups and the discussions were very pleasant and meaningful. All leftover food was donated to St. Paul’s Community Center.

Following dinner everyone moved to the church sanctuary. Here participants from eleven religious groups sang, danced, chanted, played instruments, and offered prayers to those who attended. The Gospel Choir really had the place enlivened at the end of the evening!

Devorah has a background as a nurse, a licensed social worker, and a counselor. She has represented the Jewish community at a multi-faith service each month for the last few years. She was also instrumental in obtaining sponsors, having a peace pole created and installed on the Federation/JCC/YMCA grounds. She is truly a treasure for our community!

"What Do We Mean by Spirituality?" with speaker, Dr. Dale Levy

Sunday, September 22, 2024 10:30 AM

Many people have a poorly defined notion of spirituality. This may be related to when our formal religious education ended (e.g. at B'nai Mitzvah) or perhaps related to never really taking the time to learn about it. Some people describe a spiritual experience they have had, yet still can't say what Spirituality is.

During this program, we will try to develop a more mature concept of Spirituality through studying texts in Tanach and the Siddur. The program will be interactive with participation from those attending.

WCBI BOOK CLUB: September Selection The Thread Collectors by Shaunna J. Edwards & Alyson Richman Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024 10:30 AM at CBI

1863: In a small Creole cottage in New Orleans, an ingenious young Black woman named Stella embroiders intricate maps on repurposed cloth to help enslaved men flee and join the Union Army. Bound to a man who would kill her if he knew of her clandestine activities, Stella has to hide not only her efforts but her love for William, a Black soldier and a brilliant musician. Meanwhile, in New York City, a Jewish woman stitches a quilt for her husband, who is stationed in Louisiana with the Union Army. Between abolitionist meetings, Lily rolls bandages and crafts quilts with her sewing circle for other soldiers, too, hoping for their safe return home. But when months go by without word from her husband, Lily resolves to make the perilous journey South to search for him. As these two women risk everything for love and freedom during the brutal Civil War, their paths converge in New Orleans, where an unexpected encounter leads them to discover that even the most delicate threads have the capacity to save us. Loosely inspired by the authors' family histories, this stunning novel will stay with readers for a long time.

Debbie Perlmutter will be the discussion leader for this book club meeting. RSVP to Ellen Federman at efederman@ sbcglobal.net by Sunday, September 22, 2024.

How to access

CBI Live Stream Services

On your Computer, Tablet or Cell Phone:

• Go to the CBI website, cbitoledo.org.

• At the top of the home page click on the "Live Stream" tab.

• When the page opens, you will be connected to the CBI live stream service.

On your Television: You can also access the live stream services through your television if you have a "smart" TV, Roku or streaming stick which gives you access to YouTube.

• Click on the YouTube icon on your TV.

• When YouTube opens, search for "Congregation B'nai Israel - Sylvania, Ohio".

• Be sure to click on the listing that has the photo with Jewish star (see photo above).

• We recommend that you "subscribe" to the channel so you can easily locate the live stream for future services.

• We also highly recommend connecting to the live stream services on your TV as it is the most immersive and closest experience, short of being in the synagogue.

How to access CBI Zoom Programs & Services

• Check your email for the Zoom link and password for CBI Zoom services.

• Click on the link in the body of the email.

• If you have never used Zoom, you will be prompted to follow steps to download it on your computer.

• After that is successful, click on the link provided in the email, type in the provided password and you will be connected to the Zoom service.

Please let the office know if you have a simcha or special news that you would like to share with our congregation.

We will happily post details and photos in the CBI Bulletin, if space allows.

Deadline is the 15th of the previous month. Please call the office at 419-517-8400.
