Notes from the Hazzan

SOS

Some of you are undoubtedly aware by now that I love architecture. Always have. I see it as an expression of man’s partnership with God in giving physical form and shape to God’s world alongside nature.

Ever since childhood, this fascination found expression mainly in synagogue art and architecture. This stands to reason. After all I was born into my father’s synagogue, and my bris took place there with much fanfare. Then, as a young child, my father would daily take me to the morning minyan at 7 AM, where on the patterns of the carpet I would quietly play with my Matchbox toy cars, while by osmosis, the sounds and sights of the synagogue entered my neshama, my soul. Before even speaking English, I already was able to recite and chant lines of davening which I had absorbed. I grew up with a love of the synagogue, of Judaism, and cars which, outside of family, imbues my life.

As a young budding artist, it should come as no surprise that I began to etch in pencil and ink beautiful synagogues around the world. Some of these hang today in my office. (Come and visit.) Entering college in South Africa, I wanted to study architecture. No surprise there! For reasons I won’t discuss here, my life took a different, yet related turn. Instead of designing the buildings that housed services, programs, and classes for which they were intended, I became the designer of the content of these services that these buildings housed; a 360 degree twist.

On graduation from the University of Cape Town in Judaic Studies, music and voice, I came to New York to further my studies at Yeshiva University. Soon upon arrival, I purchased cameras and set about documenting, in photography, synagogues wherever I went. My family will recall the many detours we made during vacations, when I would go out of our way to photograph synagogues, often in obscure places. This resulted in an enormous collection of 35mm negatives, photos and slides I am in the process of converting to digital in the hopes of publication. Every trip home to visit my parents in Cape Town was accompanied by frequent car rentals, even air flights, to various South African locations where I was aware of historic or beautiful synagogues. I have some 500 photos of over 100 South African shuls, and hundreds more in a dozen countries around the world that I have had the opportunity to visit. Much of this is rare documentation, particularly in South Africa where, where due to political upheaval, the Jewish community has declined, resulting in the closure, demolition or repurposing of many of those structures.

When my dear mother Miriam passed away a year ago in Cape Town, I got the idea of creating an exhibit of these photos in her memory. I contacted Cape Town’s beautiful Jewish Museum which resulted in an exhibit of 100 photos. We held an opening reception on the day we unveiled a matsevah/tombstone to my dear mother. Our family joyfully reunited with many friends and admirers of our parents, whose contribution to the South African Jewish community is legend.

I am glad to report that, with the help of our wonderful staff and input from CBI’s adult education committee and volunteers, the exhibit will open at CBI on October 29th at 7 PM with a reception and Powerpoint to inaugurate CBI’s excellent 2023 – 2024 adult education series. Details are elsewhere in this bulletin. Some of you have already contributed towards the huge costs of mounting these exhibits in Mom’s honor, and your generosity and kindness is deeply appreciated.

Following this exhibit will be a rare opportunity to hear the director of the Toledo Museum, our own member Adam Levine, on November 5th at 10:30 AM. I hope you will support these and the many other events and services being planned for the new year.

If you were wondering what the ‘SOS’ title above stands for, you may now realize the appropriateness of ‘Save Our Synagogues.’ Too many great Jewish structures around the world have been lost, whether in Europe due to its tragic history, or South Africa’s decline, or elsewhere in the world. They are an essential part of our heritage and history. To record, document and study this history is to perpetuate memory, memory being such an integral part of our Judaism.

In the case of my former native South Africa, the exhibit offers testimony to a once glorious Jewish community which built hundreds of communities around the country, of which only a handful survive, while honoring Mom and Dad’s memory.

Antisemitism in America is a Very Old Story

As we face the rise in antisemitism in our public forums, it is worth asking how deeply rooted it is in the history of the United States. The answer is very deep indeed, going back well before there was a United States of America. This story from the mid-17th century captures the confused and conflicted view of Jews that we still face today.

Jews began arriving in New York a century before there was a New York. In September, 1654 the ship Ste. Catherine arrived in New Amsterdam (the future New York) carrying twenty-three Sephardic Jews originally from the Netherlands. The ten adults and thirteen children were fleeing Recife in Dutch Brazil after it was reconquered by Portugal. Although the refugees came from wealthy Dutch families, they arrived penniless after being robbed by pirates and turned away by the Spanish in Jamaica and Cuba.

Peter Stuyvestant, the Director General in charge of the New Netherlands colony, immediately wrote to his bosses in the Dutch West India Company as follows: “The Jews who have arrived would nearly all like to remain here, but learning that they (with their customary usury and deceitful trading with the Christians) were very repugnant to the inferior magistrates… the Deaconry also fearing that owing to their present indigence they might become a charge in the coming winter, we have… deemed it useful to require them in a friendly way to depart…” In other words, we don’t want these people here and request permission to politely kick them out.

The reply was dated April 26, 1655 and certainly arrived months later. Nearly a year after making his request, Stuyvestant received the instruction: “We would have liked to… fulfill… your request that the new territories should no more be allowed to be infected by people of the Jewish nation… but after having further weighed and considered the matter, we observe that this would be somewhat unreasonable and unfair, especially because of the considerable loss sustained by this nation, with others, in the taking of Brazil, as also because of the large amount of capital which they still have invested in the shares of this company. Therefore after many deliberations we have finally decided… that these people may travel and trade to and in New Netherland and live and remain there... You will now govern yourself accordingly.” In other words, we hear you, but these Jews are investors in our company and they are going to stay. Deal with it.

This exchange is a perfect example of the tension between the ‘mythical Jew’ – uniformly good or evil depending on the context - and the ‘Jew next door’, a real person with virtues and flaws. Stuyvestant certainly knew there were many Jewish investors in the West India Company. He must have known and worked with company merchant Jacob Barsimon – a Jew next door – who greeted the Ste. Catherine at the dock. Yet Stuyvestant still complained of ‘customary usury and deceitful trading with the Christians’. He trashes his bosses and colleagues and then blames his bigoted request on his subordinates. The directors confirm the stereotype when they say they would like to ‘fulfill your wishes’ to avoid infection ‘by the people of the Jewish nation’.

In one short exchange Jews are an infection, a public burden, in control of one of the world’s most powerful corporations and loyal citizens. What else is new? During this month of self-reflection, we look for ways to improve the world large and small. We are the Jews next door, so it is up to us to displace the mythical Jew in the public mind. Just being a good neighbor and exemplary citizen doesn’t help when so many in the U.S. have no Jewish neighbors. The balance between projecting our Jewishness to distant ears and the desire to stick to – and protect – our own is a difficult one. How best to achieve it is up to each of us.

Women of CBI celebrated Rosh Chodesh Elul

On August 21, 2023, 16 women gathered at Quarry Ridge Golf Course in Ottawa Lake, Michigan to celebrate the new month of Elul. After a short program in the Quarry Ridge Club House discussing the meaning of Elul as a month of reflection and repentance, the women enjoyed a delicious lunch from Barry Bagels.

Our program was a fun send-off to summer as we teamed up to play mini-golf, with prizes being awarded. In the photos to the left, WCBI members hit the links.

Our Tikkun Olam for this month was much needed food items for Sylvania Family Services. Sandy Traugott, posed in front of the doors of Sylvania Family Services with a cart full of the items donated by attendees of the Rosh Chodesh Elul program.

Religious School & Youth Activities

Notes from our Principal

David S. Stone Religious School is off to a terrific start. We have only had a few classes so far due to the Fall holidays, but we have fit a lot in during this short time. Our younger classes are having fun learning about all of the holidays through art, discussion and engaging new holiday books.

The IsraelLINK program has our intermediate students engaged utilizing interactive board games, as well as an online platform to explore the culture of Israel.

Wednesday classes at Chabad are in full swing. The students have the opportunity to participate in art each week, as well as continuing with their Hebrew skills, in preparation for their bar/bat mitzvahs.

Our students are beginning to prepare for both Confirmation on Sunday, November 12 and Consecration on Sunday, December 10th.

Please mark your calendars to help us celebrate Simchat Torah on Saturday evening, October 7th for dessert and a festive evening for all! Since we do not have Religious School on October 8th, we hope to see all of our Religious School families here for the celebration on Saturday evening. Following the hakafot, we will have a delicious ice cream bar for all attendees.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Congregation B’nai Israel to celebrate the Fall holidays.

DONATING RELIGIOUS OBJECTS TO CBI

If you are downsizing your home, be aware that it is permissible to throw away old kippot. Unfortunately, we cannot accept old books on Jewish subjects from your library. We would be glad to receive your old prayer books, tallitot or other religious objects for burial.
