Notes from the Hazzan
Searching for a New Rabbi
The holidays are but a faded memory by now, hopefully a good one…Many of us, I am sure, are now focused on the election, even more are looking forward to watching TV without the constant barrage of negative and often misleading ads…
Here at CBI the Rabbi search has switched into high gear in what will likely be a long and complicated process after a gap of so many years. While I haven’t seen the results of the survey that was recently sent concerning what exactly our congregation seeks in the new Rabbi, here are a few thoughts that may be worth bearing in mind in helping you through this search:
• The new rabbi will never preach more than fifteen minutes but will say everything we’d like him/her to say (here on referred to as “they”) in that allotted time.
• As an authentic religious leader they will chastise when necessary without ever alienating or upsetting anyone. They will love and be friends with everyone, as well as always agreeing with everyone regardless which side of an issue they might take.
• In the absence of more than one clergy at CBI, they will attend every morning and evening minyan and be in the office from 8 AM till late into the evening seven days a week without ever showing up tired.
• When unavailable or on vacation they will make sure to train competent replacements so that all services and programs continue uninterrupted at a high level.
• In the absence of full or even part-time secretarial support, they will do all their own secretarial work including scheduling, calls, letters, thank you cards, etc.
• In the absence of full-time janitorial support, they will often clean the building in preparation for whatever service/event is up next, our busy building needing attention seven days a week.
• Despite their meager compensation, they will be expected to always look presentable, wear nice clothes, buy the latest Judaic books, drive a nice car, donate generously to tsedaka, and frequently entertain congregants both at home or at restaurants.
• They will be between the ages of 30 – 45 but have vast congregational experience, rather than right out of rabbinical school, and be old-school but in touch with the latest societal and Conservative Movement thinking and trends.
• They will prioritize our youth and teens, USY & Kadimah, b’nai mitzvah and religious school while spending their time with seniors who constitute the majority of our congregation, all the while visiting numerous area hospitals including Michigan, as well as multiple nursing and rehab facilities, while daily phoning to check in on shut-ins.
• They will always have a smile on their face, and have a keen sense of humor but will be seriously dedicated to the important and often life and death nature of their work.
• They will have both rabbinical and cantorial training and a good voice, so that they can competently lead any musical service all year through, while teaching adult education and conducting classes in Torah and Talmud or whatever other classes the congregation seeks.
If, after an exhaustive search, things don’t quite work out as planned, as experience indicates is so often the case with new clergy, you can always try rehiring past or interim clergy who might just be available for a return.

Ahoy-vey! Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean
Today is Columbus Day, and I learned just now that Columbus was a Jew. I’m serious. We’ve been taught since grade school the Christophoro Colombo was a Catholic, born in Genoa, Italy, with no Spanish connection other than royal funding of his lunatic expedition to reach the East by sailing West. A recent genetic and historical study by Jose Antonio Lorente of Granada University, makes it almost certain that Columbus, that is Cristobal Colon, was a converted Jew from Valencia, Spain.
Columbus would have been among the hundreds of thousands of Sephardic Jews who faced the choice between conversion and repression, and eventually expulsion under the Alhambra Edict of 1492 - the same year he took off for ‘India’. At the same time the Spanish Inquisition was launched to root out Crypto-Jews, (or more insultingly, Marranos) who continued to practice Judaism in secret.
Columbus had a secret agenda: to create a safe haven for Jews in the New World. He insisted that Spain grant him hereditary rule over the land he discovered. Backed by the royal treasurer, Luis de Santangel - another secret Jew - this outrageous request was granted. Columbus and his heirs kept the Inquisition out of Jamaica for over half a century. When a group of practicing Jews arrived from Recife, Brazil (remember the Peter Stuyvestant story?) in 1654 the Inquisition threatened to follow. The Jews of Jamaica fought back by inviting England, the mortal enemy of Spain (remember the Armada?) to invade Jamaica. The English then invited all Jews in the New World to Jamaica where they prospered. To defend the island, privateers were invited to make their home in Port Royal, which became the gaudy, bawdy Treasure House of the Indies, the world’s Wickedest City and the model for the Disney stories. Card playing on Fridays and sex in the Mikvah were officially banned.
Backed by Jewish investors, with revenge in mind and Letters of Marque in hand, Jewish piracy was born. Sailing on ships with names like Jerusalem, Prophet Samuel, Queen Esther and Shield of Abraham, Jewish captains plundered the Spanish Main. Moses Cohen Henriques is the only pirate to capture an entire treasure fleet hauling in a profit of $1 billion in today’s money. Yakov Kuriel and David Abrabanel (of the rabbinic family) took to piracy to avenge their families and friends. After a successful career with his three ships, Kuriel retired to the Holy Land to study Kabbalah with Arizal (Isaac ben Solomon Luria Ashkenazi) and is buried in Safed. Columbus may have been very bad for the indigenous Americans, but he was certainly good for the Jews.

Full Set of High Holiday Torah Mantles Dedicated at Selichot Service
During our recent Selichot service, on September 28, 2024, our congregation gratefully received and unveiled ten new high holiday torah mantles. The gift of these beautifully designed torah covers was made possible through the generosity of individual members and the Women of CBI. We would like to highlight the following members who have dedicated a new torah mantle: Sandy and Chuck Traugott, Linda and Howard Moskowitz, Sue Wilson, and a combined gift for one mantle from Ann and Howard Rosenberg, Luann and William Garber, Anne and Jeff Bauer. Additionally six mantles were generously donated by the Women of CBI.
These contemporary High Holiday torah mantles are distinctive in that they are white and have beautiful Judaic themed motifs. We will enjoy the beauty of our new torah mantles for many years into the future.

Notes from our Principal
The Fall holidays kept us busy over the past couple of months. Now, it is time to settle in and delve deeper into our curriculum.
Ms. Sherline’s students are working on the timeline of Jewish history, while making their own timeline scrolls throughout the year. Each student is working diligently on this exciting hands on project that will become a keepsake to refer back to.
Mrs. Van Dyke’s class has been learning more about mitzvot and derech eretz, showing care and courtesy. The students made Rosh Hashanah cards for senior members of our community and decorated our beautiful sukkah with their creative decorations.
Adam Davis and Mr. Silverman have been teaching about current events happening in Israel and in our student’s daily lives here in Toledo. As the Global Jewish community is dealing with so much hardship, we strive to be there for our students to strengthen their Jewish identity and always be there for them.
We are looking forward to more time spent with our incredible students.

Four delicious apple dessert recipes were prepared in the CBI kitchen on October 13th. These special desserts were served at the CBI Sukkot Dinner on October 20th. The Apple Cake recipe is printed below. Special thanks to our coordinators, Fran Weinblatt and Dena Zack, and our volunteer bakers, Dahlia Zack, Mary Lou Dorf, Mary Bilieu, Rhoda Miller, Elaine Buehl, Joan Levitan, Kathryn Linver, Sue Wilson, and Elana Lauber.

1 tbs vanilla
• Combine apples, 5 tbs sugar, 5 tsp cinnamon, and set aside.
• Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl. Make a well and pour in oil, eggs, juice, and vanilla. Stir until well blended. Grease and flour a tube sprinform pan or bundt cake pan.
• Pour a little bit of batter to cover the bottom of the pan, then 1/2 of the apples, 1/2 of the remaining batter, rest of apples, rest of batter.
• Bake 1 hour and 5-15 minutes. Cover with foil at 1 hour so the top doesn't get too brown. If freezing, bake 1 hour, 15 minutes.
• If cake has been frozen, defrost it. Then bake on cake rack for 15 minutes at 300 degrees. Wait 1 hour before removing cake from pan.
