By the time you read this article the intensity of a two-month High Holiday period will be over, and memories thereof fading. We have moved on to other responsibilities in our daily lives here at CBI.
We are indeed fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers who joined our dedicated professional team to produce multiple high caliber services and programs throughout this season and all year through. Without you we would not be the congregation we are, and I cannot let this opportunity pass without due acknowledgement.
Rabbi Joan Friedman joined me again for the fourth year and proved, as always, a most worthy bimah partner, chanting various services, reading Torah, haftorah and sermonizing. We also thank all who opened their homes for Joan’s hospitality.
David Friedes deserves the highest accolades of yasher koach for stepping up to chant Rosh Hashanah services with zero notice. David is a real pro and I could write a whole page on him! (see note from Gabi on page 3 for further details)
Haftarot were beautifully chanted by visiting Cantor Frank Lanzkron-Tamarazo, Noah LeizermanLeigh, Bill Garber, David Friedes and David Weinberg who also led Pesukei Dezimrah. Noah is a product of our own synagogue where he became bar–mitzvah six years ago. His outstanding rendition is a great source of pride to his family and to our congregation, and we hope he will return often to do it again. The haftorah for Mincha of Yom Kippur was ably chanted by Hannah Chernow, Andy Davis, Dani Mallin, Harris Merer, and Dylan Merer.
Service soloists were Rachel Intrater, Cheryl Rothschild, and David Friedes who all added magnificently to our services.
The Martyrology Service was once again coordinated by Fagie Benstein who spent the holidays in Israel with family. Fagie has coordinated this emotional service for well over three decades and we certainly missed her presence for the first time in so many years, but we know how much she enjoyed being in Israel. Participants included Paul Causman, Cheryl and Steve Rothschild, and Harris and Dylan Merer. Andy Davis reported on his life-altering experience as part of CBI’s fifth Israel Confirmation trip this past summer.
The shofar has been sounded for decades by David Zack. He blew fluently as a fiddle, hauntingly as a trumpet. The sounds still echo in my ears a month later!
This year for the first time we welcomed Rebecca Swett as a new member, having moved here from Connecticut. Rebecca is a professional harpist who added such beauty and atmosphere to our Kol Nidrei service! I look forward to expanding Rebecca’s role in our congregation.
Junior congregation was led by our own Baylee Mallin and from all reports the children loved her and her program. Thank you Baylee!
Tom Kasle and his ritual committee assigned over 100 honors, including subbing on the spot as needed. They were joined by Miriam Beckerman, our year round gabbai, to assure a smooth flow of services, making sure participants were where they needed to be when they needed to be! Howard Rosenbaum and Jerry Russell who filled this pivotal role for many years before, should also be acknowledged, having set such a high standard to be emulated!
I’m not sure how many of you are aware of the behind the scenes role Howard Moskowitz plays in the daily life of CBI. Howard has received numerous awards from CBI already, but needs to be acknowledged again for his daily role in technological support, Livestream, Zoom etc, names no-one heard of a few years ago that are now a life line for us thanks, primarily to Howard!
Ushers and greeters were once again coordinated by Kris Mann from our board. Thank you Kris for always following through!
Over the course of the past few months that included the High Holiday season, many of our members have volunteered their time and energy to various projects that benefit our entire congregation. Special thanks to all of you!
These projects include the CBI Sukkah Build, cleaning all the silver that adorns our Torahs in preparation for the High Holidays, planning programming through the Women of CBI, and preparation of the CBI monthly bulletin for mailing, just to name a few.
Our CBI family is ever-strengthened by the generous support from all of our volunteers and we share an incredible sense of gratitude and appreciation for all of your efforts. Todah Rabah!
As many of you know from attending Rosh Hashanah services at CBI this past September, Cantor Lichterman was beset by cold symptoms that did not allow him to sing the special and lengthy davening that is the traditional hallmark of the holiday. This had only transpired once before in the entirety of the Cantor's long and illustrious cantorial career. When considering possible alternatives, he had to look no farther than our own David Friedes who instantly and without
question stepped up to beautifully and fervently chant the holiday service without notice or practice. A truly astonishing feat.
David has been a member of CBI for over 35 years, and is an active part of the morning and evening minyanim where he also leads services when needed. He also sings duets with the Cantor at Shabbat, holiday services, and whenever the Cantor is unavailable.
David, on behalf of Cantor Lichterman, the CBI Board of Trustees, and our congregation, we give you our sincere thanks, gratitude, and "Yasher Koach!". We are truly blessed to have you as part of our synagogue family!
A Special Todah Rabah to David Friedes

CBI members and friends celebrated the end of Sukkot and Simchat Torah at the dinner and service on Sunday, October 17, 2022 in our new, larger sukkah. Participants were able to make the brachot over the lulav and etrog, learn about the "Ushpizim", and enjoy a delicious veggie lasagna dinner.
After the dinner, everyone went back into the building for the Simchat Torah celebration where the entire Torah scroll was unrolled while held by CBI members. Everyone had the opportunity have the honor of dancing with the Torah (hakafot), followed by an ice cream and cookies dessert and chocolate bars for the kids.

Special thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the dinner a success!

Daily minyan continued uninterrupted led by Jack katz, Miriam Beckerman, David Weinberg, David Friedes and Butch Stein Butch for the past two years has offered a thought provoking kavannah/devotional message every day (often twice a day). We appreciate all the regulars who make sure there is always a minyan, whether in person or on Zoom!
Have you seen or been in the beautiful new sukkah we used for the first time this past Sukkot? Our sukkah party and Simchat Torah was attended by some 75 people. Were you one of them? Thank you to Jim Cyack, Bruce Post, Gabi, Larry and Kim for coordinating the new sukkah. I hope next year you will all come to enjoy it, weather permitting!
Our President, executive and board deserve credit for their crucial role in calmly keeping our congregation functional, active and solvent, dealing urgently with all matters as they arise, after two exceedingly difficult years!
I want to personally acknowledge the generosity of CBI’s donors - Kol Nidrei appeal, Torah holders, the Women of CBI for three new beautiful white Torah mantles, so many of you who contributed generously to my discretionary fund and other funds in memory of my dear late mother Miriam, as well as my 12th year honor, and throughout the year. Exhibit the multiple donors listed month after month on the back pages of our bulletin, and two magnificent Torah mantles in the front row of our ark donated in my honor!
Our staff of Gabi, Rhoda, Kim, Cathy, Larry and Karen make my position of sole clergy easier, ensuring the multiple issues that arise daily are dealt with efficiently, and making us a synagogue to be proud of!
Finally you, our membership family make it all worthwhile. We are here for you and look forward to seeing you throughout the year. We thank you for making CBI the special shul we are!

Our Jewish community was so fortunate to have the opportunity to meet two incredible young Israeli adults who came to visit Toledo at the end of October. Bnaya and Yoav are spending the year in Cleveland as representatives of the Shin Shin program through the Jewish Agency for Israel. The agency aims to connect all Jews from all countries and religious streams, sharing heritage and strengthening our ties as a global family with Israel at its center. Our sudents had the opportunity to meet with Bnaya (left) and Yoav (right) with our friends from Shomer Emunim for a fun filled Sunday morning. We are looking forward to their next visit in a few months.
The NW Ohio Jewish Book Festival starts off our exciting month of November. Grades 3-7th will join students from Shomer Emunim for an opportunity to meet with Bridget Hodder, author of The Button Box. We are fortunate to be able to have this memorable morning.

The Trial of FDR is a live docudrama stage play dramatizing the controversy surrounding the voyage of the SS St. Louis, a ship carrying 937 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany motivated by the ever-increasing Nazi campaign against the Jews culminating in the events of Kristallnacht. The ship was turned away first by Cuba and then by the U.S., thus forced to return to Europe where ultimately over 200 of its passengers perished in the Holocaust. This play considers the terrible impact of the decision to deny asylum to these desperate refugees. It is written and directed by Robert M. Krakow, an attorney, playwright, and documentarian.
Kristallnacht – the Night of Broken Glass – commemorates when Nazis rampaged throughout Germany destroying synagogues, murdering over 100 innocent people, vandalizing Jewish businesses, and seizing 30,000 Jewish men who were taken to concentration camps, with little or no response from the world, demonstrating to Hitler that he was free to proceed with his nefarious plans against the Jewish people. The Roosevelt Administration’s handling of the Holocaust Jewish refugee issue has been a hotly debated topic for decades. No single event has had more influence on this debate than the ill-fated Voyage of the SS St. Louis. This unique docudrama puts President Roosevelt on trial for the decision to refuse US entry to the asylum-seeking passengers.

This fee does not include a tallit (if needed) for the burial of a male. It also does not include funeral costs or the customary gratuity paid to the clergy fo their services. The above fees apply to members in good standing at CBI who have paid in a minimum of $5000 in dues since joining the synagogue. Those who have not attained this standard will be required to do so in order to qualify for a plot.
If a double stone is planned, the full burial charges for the second plot must be paid before the monument is placed.
CBI will continue to collect the funds and remit to the Cemetery Association on behalf of the congregant or family.
PLEASE NOTE: All prepayments in full of interment and perpetual care fees will be honored.

Our CBI Library has recently received several new books which can be found on our library lounge “new selections’ shelves. Please come and take a look. If interested, contact Cathy Sperling at (419) 841-1927 to assist you in checking them out.
“Margaret McMullan has written a beautiful and heartrending account of her pilgrimage to Pécs, Hungary in the hope of retrieving what she can of the story of a distant (Jewish) relative, lost in the Holocaust. Written with her usual vividly realized, emotionally engaging prose, in which Margaret emerges as a protagonist with whom the reader identifies, Where the Angels Lived is a powerful testament of familial mourning as well as a vision of 20th century European history that is both searing and uplifting.” - Joyce Carol Oates
The moment she discovers the existence of Richard, a long-lost relative, at Israel’s Holocaust Museum, Margaret McMullan begins an unexpected journey of revelation and connectivity as she tirelessly researches the history of her ancestors, the Engel de Jánosis. Propelled by a Fulbright cultural exchange that sends her to teach at a Hungarian University, Margaret, her husband and teenage son all eagerly travel to Pécs, the land of her mother’s Jewish lineage. After reaching Pécs, a Hungarian town both small and primarily Christian, Margaret realizes right then and there how difficult her mission is going to be.
Yeshiva Days - Learning on the Lower East Side by Jonathan Boyarin
Yeshiva Days, written in 2020, is the story of a place on the Lower East Side with its own distinctive heritage and character, a meditation on the enduring power of Jewish tradition and learning, and a record of a different way of engaging with time and otherness.
New York City's Lower East Side has witnessed a severe decline in its Jewish population in recent decades, yet every morning in the big room of the city's oldest yeshiva, students still gather to study the Talmud beneath the great arched windows facing out onto East Broadway.
The author explores the yeshiva's relationship with the neighborhood, the city, and Jewish and American culture more broadly, and brings vividly to life its routines, rituals, and rhythms. He reflects on the tantalizing meanings of "study for its own sake" in the intellectually vibrant world of traditional rabbinic learning. Yeshiva Days is Jonathan Boyarin's uniquely personal account of the year he spent as both student and observer at Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem, and a poignant chronicle of a side of Jewish life that outsiders rarely see.
We hope you will come in, sit, relax, and peruse some of our newest literary acquisitions during the hours that the synagogue is open. You are welcome to borrow any of these books, as long as you sign them out in our provided card box. For security purposes, please contact the office (419.517.8400) before you arrive.
