From July 23rd to August 13th is a period in our Jewish calendar known as the ‘Three Weeks.’ These are days of mourning, culminating in Tisha B’av, the 24-hour fast commemorating the destruction of both Jerusalem Temples and two exiles, the latter lasting almost 2000 years until modern Israel’s founding in 1948. This year, I am approaching this sad period with ambivalence and mixed feelings. Should we commemorate past destructions? Should we remember the two Temples and exiles? No doubt, we must!
However, our generation has just lived through our own Tisha B’av. The past nine months since October 7th, 2023 have changed Israel and global Jewry forever. The end result is yet unclear. Questions endure. For example, what will Gaza be after the war is over? Will resurgent anti-Semitism, particularly on US college campuses that has shocked American Jewry, subside? There are so many questions affecting us as Jews, Zionists, and Americans in the face of current events. Another question that lurks is what will the result be of the upcoming November US presidential election, and how will the result affect us as Jews and Israel?
There are no simple answers, nor will I attempt to give any. I leave conjecture to the many political pundits. However, we can draw inspiration from our holy texts that have guided us throughout our history, giving hope and strength to Jewish communities whenever death and destruction was their fate. After each destruction, such as the first and second exiles of 586 BCE and 70 AD respectively, the Jewish People reinvented ourselves, in both cases without our central religious structure – the holy Temple. Following each diasporic dispersion, Judaism not only was reinvented, it thrived.
The beautiful holiday of Shavuot that we just celebrated, marks our embrace of Torah and our Jewish heritage. Shavuot is preceded by the Torah portion Bamidbar which begins the Book of Numbers, the fourth Book of the Torah. The Haftorah – Prophetic portion for Bamidbar is from the prophet Hosea, who states (2:20–22): “I will banish bow, sword, and war from the land. I will let you lie down in safety. I will betroth you forever; I will betroth you with righteousness and justice, with goodness and mercy. And I will betroth you with faithfulness, and you shall know the Lord.”
Similar reassurance is presented by the haftorah for the second day of Shavuot, from the Prophet Habakkuk, who states (3:13, 18–19): “You (God) have come forth to deliver Your anointed, You will destroy the roof of the villain’s house, raze it from foundation to top. I will rejoice in the Lord, exult in the God who delivers me. My Lord God is my strength, who makes my feet like the deer’s, and lets me stride upon the heights.”
There is no doubt in my mind, based on our history and Torah, that after this all passes, both Israel and world Jewry will emerge stronger than ever!
Hazzan Ivor Lichterman
For many of us, one of the most meaningful parts of our services during the High Holy Days is Yizkor on Yom Kippur. It is at that time when we turn our thoughts to our loved ones who have left this earth. We reflect upon their lives, as well as the lives of members of our congregation, and family and friends. In addition, we take the time to formally recognize the Martyrs of our people, especially the Six Million who were murdered during the Shoah, and those who gave their lives for Israel.
Each year, we print a Yizkor Book which contains the Yizkor Service, a list of the synagogue’s Memorial Plaques, and a
memorial to the Six Million and Israeli victims. Not only is this book substantial and permanent, but those who wish may take it home for use during the year.
I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity, as a way of remembering those dearest to us, and at the same time helping our congregation. An order form is printed below.
The response last year was wonderful! I hope that you will participate this year.
Shana Tova - A Blessed Year, Hazzan Ivor Lichterman

For those of you who missed the CBI Annual Meeting, here is an edited version of my remarks.
Let’s begin with the basics. As of last month, we have 233 membership units, down from 238 this time last year. This keeps us at the larger end of what the United Synagogue calls ‘A-size’; 250 units or less. While this is good-ish news, the long-term trajectory of the entire Toledo Jewish community is not encouraging. Family sizes are shrinking as in all developed nations and many young adults choose to leave the area. Joel Beren’s piece in the Jewish News describes our situation in detail and makes an impassioned plea that we rethink how our community is organized and cooperates to face this future. Serious discussions of how we might – and I emphasize might - consolidate facilities and operations have not yet begun. I will be sure to keep you posted on any developments.
Financially we are in good shape for now. CBI is operating at a surplus through the end of April (May figures are not yet available). Our cash position is sound, but we anticipate some significant building and maintenance expenses which will eat up most, if not all of our surplus by the end of our fiscal year (July 31). The modest dues increase should allow us to operate at close to a break-even level for the next fiscal year ending 7/31/25. We must continue to be very careful with our spending. I know many members are annoyed with increasing dues and fees for programs that were once free of charge. As I have said many times, payroll, maintenance and security don’t get cheaper as our congregation shrinks.
On the positive side we got a lot done this year. A great deal of deferred maintenance has been completed. The irrigation well was cleaned, and the sprinkler system adjusted to provide more even and reliable watering. Our sacred garden is maturing beautifully. The mural has transformed the shed from an eyesore to an element of the garden design. With a generous gift from the Rosenbaum family in honor of Howard Rosenbaum, we now have proper signage on the building. After sixteen years, you finally know where you are when you get here. This is not a joke. In a recent drill, some first responders were not sure they were in the right place as they arrived.
Inside the building a serious termite infestation in the social hall wall has been eliminated and the woodwork repaired. The failing garbage disposal in the kitchen has been replaced and numerous minor plumbing repairs completed. The classroom has been outfitted with a new projector and screen, and the black-out shades are now functional. You might have noticed that the sound in the sanctuary was much improved by replacement of some failed speakers, proper adjustment of the amplifiers and provision of better microphone for the Hazzan.
Two important ‘transitional’ items are worth discussing. First, Cathy Sperling reports that the Toledo Jewish Community Cemetery Association is working to address congregational needs for intermarried couples and mixed burials other than at Eagle Point Cemetery. A committee was convened to explore these diverse needs and to eventually develop space at Beth Shalom. In consultation with USCJ and the Rabbinical Assembly, they will assure that any new section does not negate the halakhic nature of existing sections of Beth Shalom. Having sat in on several of these discussions, I can tell you this this is not simple because so many intermarriage and conversion scenarios must be anticipated.
Second, and much more exciting, we have kicked off the search for a Rabbi. I explained the reasons for the search and outlined the search process itself in the bulletin. Ian Katz, co-chair of the search committee, is here to update you on the status of the search.
One of my goals has been to improve communication and transparency in synagogue decision making. If you want to know something, ask. If you have an issue, don’t let it fester. If you have an idea, tell somebody. This reminds me of a career planning adage I used back when I actually had a job: If you DON’T tell me what your want, I CAN guarantee that you WON’T get it, but if you DO tell me what you want, I CAN’T guarantee that you WILL get it. But we can try. In closing, I would like to thank the Cantor, the board, ex-presidents, synagogue staff and many congregants for their support and advice in my first term. I look forward to another (hopefully just one more) productive term as President of CBI.
Mike Tamor, CBI President

The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett by Annie Lyons
Wednesday, July 24, 2024 12:00 PM at Temple Shomer Emunim

It's never too late to start living. Eudora Honeysett is done with this noisy, moronic world—all of it. She has witnessed the indignities and suffering of old age and has lived a full life. At eighty-five, she isn’t going to leave things to chance. Her end will be on her terms. With one call to a clinic in Switzerland, a plan is set in motion.
Then she meets ten-year-old Rose Trewidney, a whirling, pint-sized rainbow of sparkling cheer. All Eudora wants is to be left alone to set her affairs in order. Instead, she finds herself embarking on a series of adventures with the irrepressible Rose and their affable neighbor, the recently widowed Stanley—afternoon tea, shopping sprees, trips to the beach, birthday celebrations, pizza parties.
While the trio of unlikely BFFs grow closer and anxiously await the arrival of Rose’s new baby sister, Eudora is reminded of her own childhood—of losing her father during World War II and the devastating impact it had on her entire family. In reflecting on her past, Eudora realizes she must come to terms with what lies ahead.
But now that her joy for life has been rekindled, how can she possibly say goodbye?
Discussion Leaders will be Rabbi Lisa Delson, Alice Applebaum, Elsa Leveton, Carol Richman, and Sharon Stein.
The Toledo/Lucas County Public Library has many audiobooks, hard copies, and dvd's available.
THIS PROGRAM IS OPEN TO THE WOMEN OF ALL LOCAL CONGREGATIONS
Lunch will be served. Cost is $7 per person.
RSVP to Elsa Leveton at Congregation Etz Chayim, 419.473.2401, or email elsa@etzchayimtoledo.org by July 14, 2024.
